For a little context, this was their first single on their first album, so for a LOT LOT LOT of people including me, this was their first exposure to Slipknot, which was also at the very start of Numetal becoming the biggest rock and metal genre in the world, and the 9 members and the crazy masks and jumpsuits made them incredibly unique and stand out, so they blew the fuck up on this song. This song BLEW THEM THE FUCK UP.
Slipknot was behind in the Nu Metal game by about 5-6yrs at least… the Nu Metal scene came along and started with bands like Korn, Deftones etc.. it was near the height of its popularity once Slipknot really started gaining attention around 98-99
@@davidvied2507 I know the timeline... I was referring to when Numetal really blew up and became mainstream, and THE lead genre in any hard and heavy rock. Of course it was a thing for years before them, but it was really maybe 1998-1999 when Numetal became a household name in music and really took over. 1998 was Korn’s Follow The Leader, System of a Down’s Debut, Marylin Manson’s Mechanical Animals, Kid Rock’s Devil Without A Cause, and Godsmack’s debut. 1999 was Korn’s Issues, Limp Bizkit’s Significant Other, Static-X’s Wisconsin Death Trip, and Slipknot’s Debut. Also it’s the year before Mudvayne, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, and Disturb’s debut... by which time no one can argue that numetal had completely taken over. My memory and my assessment on Numetal and my comment stands. Also, if you’re trying to be all technical, you’re talking about only a few years before what I’m talking about, not 5 or 6, and Slipknot also formed in 1995.
I grew up in a small town in South Dakota with one rock station and circa 2000 they started playing this on heavy rotation. I was blown away. Within the year I had a buddy tattoo “maggot” on my arm with an exacto knife and pen ink. Looked like shit.
Waaaaaaaaay back in '99 at Ozzfest I got to meet the majority of the band. I found it funny just how nice and personable they were given their look. It was an excellent example of not judging a book by its cover. Also they were fascinated by my toe which had gotten destroyed in the mosh pit with the entire nail having been ripped off. They ended up taking a picture of it.
I remember tapeing this one to cassette off the radio on a late night Australian metal show and playing it over and over again. Follow the Leader, this album, Toxicity and White Pony are the stand-out albums of that time and scene imo.
First saw ‘me in 1998 when they were just a few months from being signed as they were opening up the local stage here in the Des Moines area at a festival. Had no idea who they were but their stage show and the orange prison jumpsuits def left an impression.
I miss Corey's old school crunchy anguished vocals. Unfortunately that kind of untrained rage screaming is not sustainable and if you combine that his boozing and smoking at the time it was never going to last.. It got its worst around volume 3 and only now he's really starting to be able to actually scream for a whole gig without destroying his throat. It was nice to hear him finally get his primal screams back on Solway Firth
I absolutely agree, but I miss those old school vocals. They were so good. If Corey hadn't started with those vocals, I'm sure they wouldn't be where they are now, but I completely understand why he would switch to a more sustainable style of vocals. I've been with them since the beginning, so at this point I'm just thankful that Slipknot is still in my life for now. They're old and I'm old now, so I'm just grateful for every new album. Haha
This one was my first Slipknot song… my brother brought this cd home and listened to this guys and I didn’t get why and now… 20 something years later… still hooked to this guys
They’ve got a new album coming out as well...Clown (the drum percussionist) said that ‘he’s never heard Corey’s voice like this before’ and apparently it’s ‘as heavy as the earlier albums like Iowa & self titled’😊💚🖤
I will never forget the concert in which I got to see Slipknot live. Birmingham, Alabama. April 2004 at the Jagermeister Music Tour with Damage Plan (prior to Dimebag being killed. RIP), Fear Factory, Chimaira, and Slipknot. It was absolutely amazing, and Slipknot was just about to drop Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) the next month, but they performed songs from the first album and Iowa too, including this song. Also, I HIGHLY recommend you guys check out Joey's band, Murderdolls, and the first song you guys should check out from Murderdolls is People Hate Me. My mom says that song is her theme song, so keep that in mind when you listen to it. Lol. I also HIGHLY recommend you guys check out Murderdolls version of White Wedding too. You'll love it.
The album you're talking about that was made before Corey was Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat with vocalist Anders Colsefni. To me, it sounds similar to Sykotik Sinfoney's album Eargasm with all the rapid switching between genres, the rapping, the heavy parts, and the general weirdness. It was definitely a different direction they seemed to be going back then. Sykotik Sinfoney had come first, and they also capitalized the S, K, and T in their logo. I honestly think they were a huge influence on Slipknot. Slipknot also did some demos in 1997 which mostly didn't get released except for the song Snap, which appeared on the Freddy vs Jason soundtrack. Several of the songs on Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat were remade for Slipknot's self-titled debut album after Corey was brought on to do vocals. One song from that album also was remade for their second album, Iowa.
This ^^ Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat is the album you need to check out before Corey. It's a fucking INSANE album. "Do Nothing/Bitchslap" will blow your mind and completely recontextualise Slipknot for you. HIGHLY suggest you (Trash Talkers)
I read an interview with Cory Taylor where he said the song is about how we (humans) pretend to be civilized and evolved, but at any second we’re capable of snapping and becoming people who can commit terrible acts, and how at any moment we can become animals.
That's funny, the song was always said to be about a dream that Corey had where he was in a bath full of blood or something like that. It's strange how sometimes the band backtrack at a later date and say that the songs mean something different.
This has been my favorite song for 22 years..... it almost brings tears to my eyes, when I here the album version of wait and bleed it makes me feel the same way I feel when I see the scene from DragonBall Z when goku went super sajien for the first time against freiza. Takes me back to being 13 again.
I remember someone giving me the cassette of this album (yea I'm that old), listening it as starting doing my lawn....needless to say I never got the lawn done that day, and just listened to this all day long.

Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat (MFKR) That is the album before Corey. Anders Colsefni was the original singer. If you listen to the song called Slipknot on MFKR it is a slowed down version of (SIC) from their self titled. Do them both side by side as a duel video reaction. "its so angry!" and they havent heard surfacing from this album lol fun fact, they actually did have another vocalist but they did want someone more melodic, they recorded one album prior to self title with him which is extremely rare mate feed kill repeat
You guys should listen to Gently from the Mate Feed Kill Repeat album (pre-Corey) and then Gently from Iowa. You can really hear how the band progressed between the two versions of the song.
First time I ever saw Slipknot was the early 2000s and it was at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach....just imagine all 9 of them up on that little stage. It was so awesome! Off this album please do "Eeyore" and "Diluted". 🤘❤
This was from they're first Studio album but they did have a Demo album that came out 3 years before this called Mate Feed Kill Repeat. Definitely check out a song from it i recommend Gently. Corey was not on that album
For pre-Corey content, you have to find Slipknot's demo album "Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat". Their lead singer then was Anders Colsefni. I would recommend their self-titled song. Slipknot - "Slipknot"

Slipknot- MATE FEED KILL REPEAT album was released in 1996 its pre corey taylor album... Its guttural vocals by Anders Colsefni and slipknots hard backing tracks..... In 1997, Corey at the time was in Stone Sour and was asked to come in to replace Anders in slipknot because shawn thought it was Anders vocals that were the reason they werent getting interest from recording companies so he wanted someone more melodic....
If you want to here more melodic Corey I'd recommend No life and Me Inside off the same debut self titled album. Two of my absolute favorite Slipknot songs.
If you want slipknot before corey, they have one called "mate, feed, kill, repeat" that had anders (the vocalist before corey). Some of the songs have been repurposed over the years like "slipknot" becoming "sic" on their self titled and "gently" being reconfigured and put onto iowa. Those would be a good start. And rip to joey. One of the men that made slipknot into what it has become today.
Guys, you should react to The Great Southern Trendkill from Pantera. The first song, with the album name, is the best entrance possible into a metal album Keep ya great job!
Love this song! First two Slipknot albums are the best out of their whole catalog. You guys should check out Through Rose by The Anchor. They're kick ass and the singer is very impressive. You'll know what I mean when you see it.
You guys! I think alot of your fan base here would love to see you react to a few other tracks from this album. Sic, eyeless, skin ticket.... js there are some GEMS 💎 on this album
Guys, if you want to listen to Slipknot before Corey Taylor, you can listen to Slipknot-Slipknot (MFKR). It's from ther debut album Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. But despite considering it their first album upon release, the band now considers Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. a demo and have evolved and released the majority of its songs on future releases, albeit usually in radically altered forms. So technically, you can just listen to their self-titled album, because it contains almost all the same tracks, only in the best quality (and of course everything became much better when Cory MF Taylor joined the group in late 1996).
I would love to see you guys react to Devin Townsend, The Death of Music, Live at the Royal Albert Hall, given your musical knowledge. Plus, it's literally like nothing you've heard him do before.
As far as your pop question goes, you have the three Slipknot pops currently available. They haven't released any of the other members of the band yet.
There is an album with Anders (the original singer) and it’s called “mate. Kill. Feed. Repeat” that might not be the exact title but it is similar. Skin ticket live in Japan is a personal favourite and a great video to react to imo
This is what started it all for Slipknot! Early Slipknot was a masterpiece! This and "Iowa" will always be my favs!

The first song, with the album name, is the best entrance possible into a metal album
Keep ya great job!
IF there's a Clown? Dude there is CLOWN. Shawn Crahan.
🤣🤣🤣
If you can find it there is a 6 song EP with
Anders Colsefni on lead vocals...
Also from this album is EYELESS, their best song to date imo
Love this song! First two Slipknot albums are the best out of their whole catalog.
You guys should check out Through Rose by The Anchor. They're kick ass and the singer is very impressive. You'll know what I mean when you see it.
Yes, there is a demo album MFKR with original vocalist, check out song Slipknot.
1999 Ozzfest - Slipknot and SOAD = Mind blown!
Slipknot - Do Nothing/Bitchslap - to hear Slipknot before Corey
You guys! I think alot of your fan base here would love to see you react to a few other tracks from this album. Sic, eyeless, skin ticket.... js there are some GEMS 💎 on this album
And if u do some stone sour, do GET INSIDE the 1st track on their debut album
Excellent job gentlemen...just subscribed
I would love to see you guys react to Devin Townsend, The Death of Music, Live at the Royal Albert Hall, given your musical knowledge. Plus, it's literally like nothing you've heard him do before.
As far as your pop question goes, you have the three Slipknot pops currently available. They haven't released any of the other members of the band yet.
Look up an album called mate feed kill and repeat. That is slipknot Without Corey Taylor
There is an album with Anders (the original singer) and it’s called “mate. Kill. Feed. Repeat” that might not be the exact title but it is similar.
Skin ticket live in Japan is a personal favourite and a great video to react to imo
