£100 plus materials per window and only if you have at least 4 windows to do. I've just bought the q tech 5 from Dulux today, i,ve got a big staircase with wide doorframes, big doors and lots of spindles, 71 rolls of wallpaper.

It's a good starting point.
But if you do more uPVC spraying... The more you spend the better, as you'll appreciate.
Regards price I'm only guessing at moment but I'd say £150 labour + materials.
And yes I think you should charge for full tin of paint even if you only use half and use again on next job, to cover time and fuel for fetching it!

Try a heat gun... or hot hair dryer, the glue should soften up.
Hi Phil, really good video here! Been spraying 8 years but just jumped on to spraying upvc recently. Have you got any tips on spraying around an opener on a window without getting overspray on the inside of the frame?
Hi Ash... Don't over think it.
1. You may be able to unscrew the window and remove and tape off the edges, like doing a door.
2. Tape the inner edges and use protection paper or film to stop spray going in the room... Like doing kitchen cabinets.
The opening window, tape the inner edges and wrap some paper back around to protect the inner part of the window.
Have I explained it ok?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator yeah I think so mate, I have 9 widows and have sprayed them with the openers all closed so obviously once open them a white strip will be there. I'm thinking of just taking taking openers off and putting them back on after as these widows aren't in situe just yet

hi, great to hear.
a litre goes a long way.
If in doubt, get enough to start with so you have enough for the mist coat, then the tops coats.
you'll find 2.5ltrs will do it, but if you're happier getting 5ltrs to be safe... which will be amply with spare left over, you'll have it by you, just in case.

Nice vid Phil. I wouldn't mind seeing some pictures of the finished article after tape and sheets are removed. I'm looking to get into upvc spraying this year so as much info as possible on paints/processes would be great.
I checked the window this afternoon and it looks ace. all very even in colour. I've left the window coverings on for now while the building work is still going on. What I'll do is get some finished photos sorted once the 2nd coat goes on the wall and I've put the sealant around the edges again.
Stuff it. I've just had my windows and doors done in golden oak, now I'm going to have to spray them grey to keep up with the fashion!
LoL... Give it a few years.... Then have them sprayed white... That'll be the craze next ;)

Seriously though, with the proper cleaning down of it and using the scotch Brite pads to give it a key. Then sprayed with a must coat... Then two or three coats on top...
I can't see why it wouldn't last year's. Then when the grey fashion changes it can be then done in another colour.

it's a good idea to get some hands on practice with someone who can go through the unit so you know it inside and out.
The spraying, you'll get the hang of it with practice.... practice and practice.
Don' be afraid to ask if you don't know something.

But practice at home is a good start. Doesn't matter if you mess up so much lol

One water based the other the spirit base.
Great vid 👍. Is it possible to paint in cold weather or does it have to be a certain temperature outside? Also I was planning on using a lvlp gun off a 50 litre / 2.5hp / 9.5 CFM compressor, do you think that's realistic ? Thanks 👍
Good question. I like weather to improve. Nothing worse than temperature drop and a damp condensation forming on newly painted windows etc

Hi Phil, Love the video's. Do you think you could use the Kolorbond with an airless sprayer? Like a Graco ultra or a GX19?
I wouldn't want to.
You need more control and the KolorBond is very thin.
I can see where you're coming from. The first coat you applied was very thin and I could see it turning into a mess very quickly if you tried to airless spray.

No chance. Everything has a place and this includes airless sprayers. Airless are fantastic indoors with all and any water based paints. In particular Graco rechargeable sprayers for the portability aspect. The pumps can handle oil and cellulose paints (although I know they do wear out faster from this) however the finish from them is nowhere near as good as with compression spraying. Not even close.

thanks for the video mate. really helpful. I'm going to be spraying my customers windows soon and this helped! can I just ask, wjat sort of guarantee would you give to your client? My customers have asked for a guarantee and I'm not sure how long I should do it for. would love your advice on this if you can :)
I'll be using the exact paint as you, Kolorbond upvc specializes paint.
and funnily enough it's anthracite gray but in matt for me!

I say the only guarantee is someone will always come and do it cheaper lol
Seriously though.. I say 12month on workmanship would be fair.
Product issues you'd take up with Kolorbond if it failed.
But realistically how can you give big guarantees on paint and surfaces that are all different.
As long as you prep and UC correctly... You should be fine.
That window is now over 12months since I did it... Looks just same now, as like it did last year.

My customer is pushing for a 2 year warranty. as long as I've prepped right and used the window prep ect, would I be safe giving her a 2 year warranty? I'm doing 9 large windows and would hate to have to go back after 23 months for free and redo them all 😅
She only wants a warranty for peeling paint. scuffs and scrapes would be their fault but I understand she'd want a warranty for peeling. But like you say, that would be up to kolorbond to pay out if I prepped right?
Great video Phil, I wonder about your thoughts on using airless graco stuff to spray upvc? As a tip where your using thumbs up try just cupping your hand over the lens like a high 5 it is really effective for transitions and the black screen is quicker to spot when editing, a rode wireless go with wind deflector or Dji wireless mic would make a great addition. You won't want to use this stuff with airless.. you need more control and also your working with smaller amounts of paint.
You've loads of vids to watch.. some I do the hand.
I think since this video I have a Rode external mic and wine sock.

I think there is a min temp for the KolorBond to be used in.
When it's colder in winter time you have to be aware of the condensation that can form on surfaces and the chance of any paint 'blooming'. So maybe not advised really.

I really want to get a HVLP sprayer but I can only really push to the qtech Q3 hvlp, (I'm a decorator just starting out on my own), would you recommend the Q3? I'm looking to do UPVC doors, windows, kitchen cabinets etc. I already own a Qtech qt190 airless. Thanks again for your great work and lets get you that Porsche lol.
I started with a QT3..... I'll be honest.. save and get the more powerful QT5.
You'll thank me later.
It gives you more scope for different products to spray without the need to be over thinning it too much.
If you've already bought the qt3, practice practice practice with it and get a feel for it.
I've done kitchens with it, so don't think it's rubbish.. just that having the QT5 you'll feel you're not restricted by the machine... Only by yourself. Hence practice is key. ;)

Been decorating 20 years now but new to spraying im doing upvc coarse next week.
Ive bought myself a qtec 5 also with fuji pressure pot- can pressure pot be used for pvc? Also is there any benefit to using hvlp over a compressor set up?

The gun is very similar with hvlp and a conventional spray set up.
With a 'proper' hvlp turbine set up it's like a big hair dryer.
A conventional spray unit can be quite big depending non the size of the tank litre.
Everything has its place, you gotta work out what suites you're needs best.. don't buy a compressor that's cheap and then find out it's not big enough for what you need.
Which course are you doing?
They'll go over a lot of stuff, h&s is the main thing you have to be aware of. It's all dangerous if not used correctly ;)

Oh.. yes you can Use a pressure pot. But if only doing a door or window you may find it a bit big to be lugging about

The coarse is upvc widows and doors it's over in greater Manchester called spray it. Did kitchens and airless last autumn but it was down Wiltshire,
A little too far as I'm in Yorkshire.
At the moment I don't know a lot about products - I know the 2 main products people tend to use are kolour bond and Selimix.
Only just discovered your videos and will be watching a lot more of them.
Do you take sashes and opening widows out to do rebaits and closing edges?
Not got loads of spraying experience so going to start on my own and some friends are going to be my guinea pigs.

@@lukevarley103 a traditional sash... I spray as it is. Then have brush handy to paint the the edges that didn't get coated with the spray.
Always finish with the spray finish through... Don't touch up after the spray as you get a slightly different finish with a brush.
uPVC windows, suss what will work for you. If you can unscrew the the sliding hinges on a uPVC and it allows you to get to sides and edges of the frame easier, do it.
Removing things also can make taping up easier.
It allows you to do a good job... And make sure you allow your time in the quote for doing it. ;)
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator sorry to ask you this again im just un clear. If a window opens would you spray all the inside rebaits?
As the coarse I’m on they said no never and they don’t remove windows ever. They just spray closing edges with window open and a piece of card as a spray gaurd and once they’ve built up paint and its dry they close window and spray shut.
Also with doors they don’t take panel of like you did on your door video. Ive asked on the spraying forums in past and alot of people have said you should remove windows and do inside rebait you should remove panels on doors and take door of as you did!
Sorry to sound like a bust record its just what I’m being taught on coarse doesn’t sound right and if I’m going to spray upvc and charge people i want to do it properly and not be accused of being a chancer.

Love the videos Phil. Not tried Upvc spraying before but thinking about following the trend. I was just wondering for a little advice please. To spray a window that opens I guess you just open the window and mask everywhere that you don’t want to spray or do you try to remove the opening section? Yes. depending how the window is, tape up alll you don't want spray on (some may have funny hinge opening hat make it hard to get the back edges) or unscrew the opener off the frame, Most only have three screws top and bottom. Larger openers may need two of you if it's a bit heavy. But you'll use your common sense ... you don't want to drop it lol

Hi. As with anything, you get what you pay for.
This as a Stage5 hvlp. But you can buy a hvlp gun... And put that to a conventional spray compressor, a 9ltr might be ok, depending what you spray etc. 24ltr better. The larger the heavy it gets..... Doing it that way would make you a good kit cheaper.

random question phill i saw a company spraying farrow and balls on windows is it possible to spray it over upvc? or would it of been wooden frames? and if so would you need to prime it before hand if you did use FnB
Hi phill is sparying fleetwood oil base satin a good idea and if so what psi and filter be the best I'm using graco 390 cordless
I've sprayed that, but if you're using it for woodwork etc, look the finer filters and smaller spray tips.

Spraying this window and tye uPVC doors.. I've a Qt 5 hvlp.

anyway... you can spray F&B on uPVC.. just make sure you prep well and I'd use a outside water based grip primer first like Zinsser 123+.. then F&B exterior Uc, followed by the Exterior egshell.
Have have tried it on a uPVC door, just using Otex Akva.. it still looking good.... apart from I didn't bother removing the centre panel, and it moved... you saw how to remove door panels in the other upvc video? It was a rental of mine, so didn't worry too much about it as it will in the next few years be replaced.
Taping rubbers up, no need with the KolourBond... if you feel the need as the rubbers are the old style and are seen, you can run some tape over if you want, be careful when pulling the tape off.. just in case ;)

Having worked for myself and finding many trades are charging £250 to £300 a day I would charge a half day plus materials. The left over materials will become the property of the person who ordered them as it’s a specialty product. So £140 to £160 labour plus the materials, Total £180 to £200.
We need to change your thinking.... your half day/Day price.
Is that to do any kind of decorating??

@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I am not a pro decorator, just do my own. But I had my own landscape business and I would charge a half day regardless if it took 1/2 hour or 3.5 hours providing I could go onto another job. Perhaps I’m out of touch as I have been retired for 10 years. but thought the decorating other labour intensive trades were charging about £300 a day outside of London.
So because of your comment what is your normal day rate, I couldn’t deduce if you considered £300 too high or low.

We don't work on day rates. We quote for the job that's needing doing.
As they say, no one makes money on day rate.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Ahhh, my son in law is a web developer on a contract day rate at £375, I would have settled for that, role out of bed into his office next door. 😂😂😂
But yes generally a priced job is best but you need your boundaries to give the price in the first place so a job of one window taking half an hour or 3 windows taking 1 1/2 hours could well be £250. I’m assuming that you don’t think that you could get £200 plus materials for each window, ie £650 for 1 1/2 hours work, I think you could be undercut quoting that sort of price. But you know your market and it’s all down to the competition I guess.

Hello mate, been watching a good lot of yiur vids. I am currently geyying a fair bit of intrest in customers wanting upvc spraying and have done a bit but only used water based so far.
Have yiu any advice on using 2k or kolorbond original through a gx21 or what i should.be using to spray with?
Dnt want to mess up my gx21 but want to make sure.i have the right machine

Don't use airless for it, you need HVLP.
Make life easier!!!
Unlike kolorbond original TBH.
Sprays well and dries in a few minutes.
You see the set up I have with Qt 5.
Bite the bullet... But a stage 5 hvlp.
Or a decent compressor and hvlp gun.... (Size can be an issue with a compressor)
You'll get your money back in no time.

@@shanewyatt9939 the screw fix one I'd fine for waterbase spraying.... But if I were to do a uPVC from door, I'd want more control and power like a stage 5.
You will be able to spray with it though.

If your going to spray brand new window and door frames (the glass isn't even installed yet) do you still need to use the Vinylkleen window cleaning agent? Or is this stage purely for older frames that have suffered the elements?
I'd still do it as you don't know what may be on the surface you can't see.. plus you can scotch pad it at the same time.

Hi Phil, I professionally sprayed cars for 20 years but have no idea on the HVLP. I have a 2 stage coming to spray kitchen cabinet doors but at the same time I’m prepping a wooden conservatory outside with wooden spares stuck onto the glass. Do you think there is any chance I could mask out and get the Fuji Semi Pro 2 to spray Otex Akva primer and then a white Helmi 30. Maybe there are better alternatives it’s just that I was influenced to use the Tickerilla products following one of your other videos. My logic tells me I could thin the paint right down and mist on several coats, no problem as it’s so quick, BUT, would the extra thinning damage the stability of the paints. 🤔

I didn’t realise Helmi was only for inside. I have only just thought about spraying the conservatory because I now have some spraying equipment arriving on Saturday. I haven’t heard of the paints you mentioned, do you think they would spray with the 2 stage Fugi that is on its way to me.
Basically on your way to your Fugi stage 5 did you ever use a 2 stage Fugi. How about Otex Akva primer is that okay for exterior work, I haven’t read up on it yet.

@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Hi Phil, I will, but generally I’m thinking because I’m not doing this commercially then I can afford to spray several more thinner coats. I spoke to Tickerilla technical today and they confirmed that for their Helmi 30 range and their Otex Akva products that thinning past their recommended percentage wouldn’t affect the integrity of the products, it would on,y require more coats to achieve the desired result. So we will see how it all goes. I will explore a more suitable top coat for exterior use and check out how suitable Otex Akva is for exterior use.

What psi do you recommend spraying with hvlp gun
Hi. It's off a stage 5 hvlp. It has no gauge. Just alter the air flow till you get a nice spray.
Which variant are you looking at 996, 997 ?
lol well...... a early mids 80's Carrera SC....... in Red, with tea tray spoiler... and it already having an engine re build done.

Can you spray over wooden frames with the kolorbond? Also is it oil based mate
Hi. This is spirit based..NOT oil based.
I think the Aquatek Kolorbond is good for wooden windows... It's water based.
You can always check with Kolorbond directly.

Very good question. If the window is still uPVC I'd use the same product and hvlp sprayer.

You should be able to order them through a distributor.... Like Dulux Decorator Centres who sell QT5.
Have you washed yours out and allowed to dry.

Can you use an airless sprayer to do upvc windows?
Maybe tricky. As you'd be hard pushed to get less than 700psi with an airless. Hence a hvlp or conventional spray sprays a lot lower pressure which is idea which uPVC spraying.

@@ferguskelly4957 I think you'd really benefit from either a conventional or hvlp sprayer. Maybe hire one and try it first before you buy.
If buying a hvlp.. buy the best you can... A stage 5 ;)

Taping around the edges isn't too difficult. Removing the opener makes it easier too.

Such an issue with their product.
Another good video Phil. I've previously used HMG PVC17 and the updated HMG PVCPRO and even though I masked the rubber seals, when the sun warms up the plastic , the bare rubber seals stick to the paint/coating. And I mean STICK! I did my front door in PVC17 and on a warm day I have a job to open the damn thing. Switched to KB Original and never had an issue.

Like kitchen re paints... A lot cheaper to paint than replace. So charge accordingly ☺️
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator i had a friend who replaced a bunch of these windows for anthracite and a window this size would probably be 400 quid from what he was telling me. I definitely think it works out a winner for both at that price, we could do 3 at different properties or more at the same property in a day. A good earner and and making your machine earn some quids but still cost effective for customer. You could be done with each window in about an hour and a half including clear up.
I would say £120 plus the materials for the 1 window. Less if you are doing more than 1.

That sounds fairly reasonable, average that on a house with ten mixed size windows to do a colour change on.... £2000 would be a lot cheaper than new windows and also a lot less mess and time taken to do them.
