Hi Phil, watched quite a few of your videos now, they're really helpful, I've been painting UPVC windows with this same Zinsser paint by hand and I'm thinking of buying one of those Energer paint guns you mentioned, Would you recommend any sanding etc before spraying? Thanks Anthony
Hi, thanks Anthony. I've quite a few to watch now haven't I LOL Zinsser... I'd still say where you can, give a light abrade, there may be some situation (large area cladding etc) where you feel you can't get to sand it. As you know, prep is the key, whether it be sanding or washing down to give the best surface to work over. If you're doing a lot of uPVC spraying.. I's say look at the QT5 HVLP.. or something very much like it (£££) Hold off buying the Energer HVLP I tested.. until I've ran some All Coat Exterior through it and tried it on Doris the door.. let me see how good a finish I can get. Monday's (5th Sept) video is that Energer HVLP being used with Bedec BarnPaint!!! You tell me what you think of that video.
I was wondering which paint to use for my front door, so I thought let's see what Phil Beckwith, professional painter and decorator's got to say. Zinsser All Coat? Right. Let's give it a go. One coat of black satin gets brushed on. Flows OK, but it looks terrible... Oh dear... Are you sure, Phil? OK, wait an hour while I Zep the brasswork, and give it another coat. And it looks great! Really good. New door good. Added bonus! It puts the neighbour's door to shame. And they paid someone. Paid someone to apply paint with a spoon by the looks of it, and get it all over the furniture.
They paid a garden lol Glad it worked ok.... It's always a bit worrying first time. Another to look at is the Bedec MSP... Very similar paint. Anyone can apply it... So tell your neighbour.
I hand painted my front door in zinsser all coat satin mixed to farrow and ball pigeon. I didn’t prime it but sanded it lightly first and then gave it two coats,it’s been on for 4 years and looks just as good as when I first did it. I got so many comments from the neighbours who loved the colour and thought it was a brand new door so was well chuffed.
Hi, I’ve used this several times out side both on garage doors, upvc windows etc and can honestly say this stuff sprays an absolute dream !!! Never had an issue .. no clogs or blotches etc .. can’t fault it 👌👌
Great video mate. I've just sprayed a garage door, shutters and exterior doors using my Graco ultra max. Thinned 75ml/100ml to a litre. Finish is superb.
@leedouglas6255 Morning Lee. Can I ask what tip you used on the Graco? I have just invested in an Ultra QuickShot (yet to use as Reading as much as possible first!) Will be respraying some external outbuilding doors, aluminium patio doors and some radiators with AllCoat and the Graco. Cheers!
Love All Coat, just used it this weekend on a rental, sat brushed frames and skirts white, sun sprayed all doors 2 coats mixed to dulux warm pewter, all satin, luv the finish. They only had it done cos the gloss had yellowed. P.s got the Qt5 on your recommendation & I love it cheers.
11:00 ram horns 😊 shows you how to spray, if they're vertical you move the gun vertical, if horizontal you move the gun horizontal this is how I would remember lol
hi phil... i have been watching you quite a bit now..with this video with the door ... a family member of myn was going to buy 4 new interior doors as the old ones needed some tlc ... i said see what i can do bit of filling and sanding useing primer and satin paint with qt5 come brand new ... i just you for your videos and advice thank you so much 🙏
I've got some Windows to do on a property. White smooth PVC going to grey. I was going to degrease, light sand, 123+ tinted in grey, top coat in exterior allcoat. But they will be a nightmare to spray because of how the seals sit on all the windows so they are going to be brushed. I was going to use a short pile then lay off with a Hamilton finishing fine tip brush. I've used the allcoat on fascia not long ago. It's amazing stuff and I was going to ask is it any good on railings and you've answered my question. I've got some black iron coming up and thought of this. Great video Phil, keep them coming 👍🏻
Hi Phil, love your videos. I've got some pine T & G cladding to put on a ceiling. It has quite a few knots. Will the allcoat block the resins or would you recommend still applying knotting solution first?
Hi, at last someone loving the vids. ;) all coat won't. so a few options. rattle can of shellac knotting... Smith& Rogers Blockade or Zinsser BIN (both you can get in a rattle can)... spray over the knots. Or, use the same products in paint form and spray all the cladding out. then you can go over with what ever you want (see if you need to give two coats to make sure you have all the knots covered). Another product you could look at using... Bradite ONE CAN. check that out see if it would suit you as an all in one product to use.
Great video Phil, I’ve just got myself a Qtech 5 , been practicing on a door with Alcoat, it’s lovely to spray , and as you said it goes rock hard. Definitely will be using it when I can 👍
Just about to try the matt equivalent of this as multisurface, & have wood ,metal & masonary to do, only used zinsser on interior before my god that solvent based was strong & i did oil eggshell in hospitals yrs ago, i youtubed to see results & trust your judgement 👍i can't resist the urge to undercoat but no need with this it says, Doris the door has had more change of coats than Mr Benn 😉
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator well impressed one of the best paints I've used, just did the outside going over black gloss with the white 2 coats & had 1litre matt in white & black so made a grey up for garage door, covers really well & just so smooth it flows beautifully, £25 a tin not badly priced especially as it's self primer undercoat too, briĺiant
Hi Phil First thank for all you are sharing with all of us it means so very much for you to take your time to do this Where did you buy your qt5 h Lo And what sort of price range did you pay H
thanks, least you appreciate it all ;) QT5.. shop around see who has a deal on.. make sure you get a 1.5 & 1.8 needle set... and the remote is very handy. price.. around £1k
Hi Phil, Thanks for this as always. Got to do shop front, wood and masonry and bit of metal, light colour, all same. Is there any advantage using the oil base version of this? Why do they make it, if the water based is so good? Thank you :)
Not that I know of lol weather dependant .. All coat exterior (water based) will dry quicker so you'll get done quicker. Other options. Bedec MSP or Bradite OneCan.... all very similar.
Hi Phil with a Fuji Semi Pro 2 I’ve sprayed with the 123 primer then then AllCoat Satin, a wooden conservatory, 2 exterior wooden windows (one up the top of a ladder 😱) the back wooden composite door And now using the same paints I’ve sprayed 4 windows on the inside. Okay I’ve had to thin the paint right down but I’ve had 20 years experience of spraying cars in my younger days so that enabled me to get a superb smooth satin finish. Thanks for the tips of using these paints would never have know about them if it wasn’t for your channel. I now have the radiators to spray so have ordered some Rustins Radg500 quick dry radiator enamel. It seems to be quite thin from the get go so perhaps not so much letting down with water to get it through the gun. Have you ever used this Rustins paint. 🤔 Cheers G
Hi Phil, great videos learning a lot! I make MDF cupboards and wardrobes, I'm currently using a Wagner Flexio 590 which i have to thin the paint a lot which in turn reduces the sheen of the paint. Could you recommend a sprayer that i don't have to thin the paint? cheers Andy
I had put up beams (which was from a demolished building site with a lot of nail holes so on imperfections so any odd wood without any special quality) just for decorative purpose. After priming them with Zinsser BIN i painted both the beams and the whole ceiling white with Zinsser All Coat Exterior matt (water based). Looks good in my living room thus. Can I use the product on this clip (satin. solvent based?) on either the beams or on the ceiling OR BOTH for the final coat?
It's water based that I used in the video. If you've cleaned down, you should be able to just thin the first coat slightly so it soaks in, then two full coats should be fine.
Went out and brought one of those screwfix sprayers, reason being YOU aha Had 11 doors to paint and after seeing your review on them I thought why not for £40! Love using Zinsser, it’s probably one of my most used paints! Especially this time of year when it comes to dry time. £60/70 is abit high for a gallon, you need to negotiate with them lads at paint well 😂
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I did, that’s the video that actually made me go out and pick one up. I’ve been thinking about spraying for a while and was tempted into getting a graco airless but then seen that vid. Think I’m going to hone on myself skills with this for now and after watching your 5 tips for spraying ;) Might go get some wooden ladders 😂 Being a Not-in-em lad me self ah
Great video! Can I ask do you see any benefit to solvent based version over the water based? Is one more durable than the other if exposed to weather? Many thanks!
Hi, let me think....................... nope... not for general painting, the water based does so much, dries fast and wash the brush out easy. Where were you thinking of using it? TBH.. I'm not sure why they do a oil based... lol there will be a reason I suppose.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Thank you so much for explaining! This is very helpful. The water based really does seem a great option with all the benefits. I need to get wooden window frames and front door painted so looking at this Zinnser and also the dulux weathershield
Great stuff Phil, thanks for the great content. Did you ever get round to running any of this Allcoat Exterior through the Energer? I’ve got a bunch of external wood to do over the next few weeks and the paint’s ready to go, just trying to decide on an entry level sprayer to get a nice finish. Thanks
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Certainly have, if it’s a similar consistency I’ll give it a whirl and let you know how I get on. Any considerations I should be making for the Allcoat or just treat it as you did the Bedec in the other video?
Hi Phil, after watching your brilliant vids for a while I’m getting into spraying and booking a course for kitchens and furniture with the idea of getting into upvc eventually. I’m going to go for the qt5 but not sure whether to get one with suction or gravity gun? I see you’ve got the suction. Is that what you would recommend?
I've used the black before on a handrail I done during lickdown, I've recently had to do some parts as it was peeling offshore wasn't impressed. I recoated it in Tikkarula everal satin, no problems since. I find it a much better pain.... have yo tried the tikkarula every?
Hi Phil; great video as always… quick question; I’ve got a GXFF and I have a kitchen coming up soon that need the cabinets painting; I’m going to brush and roll the carcass fronts and end panels and spray doors and draw fronts; would this be your paint of choice? If not, what would you go for? Cheers. Chris.
It's an option as a MSP paint. But also consider Bedec MSP Multi surface paints. Personally... I'd go with Everal Aqua UC/primer. Then two coats of Everal Aqua 40. Helmi is also a good one... I used that on my kitchen to try it. Stood up very well. F&B modern eggshell is also very good. On a job now where I did their kitchen 4yrs ago.. still solid and rock hard. Looks like I've only just done it. I spray a lot of Everal Aqua with my Gxff. If you can get a 206 tip and fine filter for the gun... Strain the paint through a veggi bag too in the hopper.... You'll get a lovely finish.
Hey Phil… just found your channel, love it mate! Rookie question… just bought a load of All Coat.. can I use an 8 bar compressor and compatible gun to spray it with? Cheers Simon
welcome aboard... please like and share with your friends and family ;) 8bar.. i can't see why not. If the paint feels its spraying too thick, you'll thin it slightly. Start with 45psi.. and work your way up, till the fan pattern is right.. no tails. AllCoat sprays great. Also try Bedec MSP and watch the Isomat videos I've done.. maybe something else you may want to try.
Im about to paint the composite front door, Can you spray Zinsser allcoat water based black gloss directly out of the tin, or does it need thinning 1st, and if so what ratio to thin it with water ? Thanks
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator ok dont laugh, but its a wagner fence and decking sprayer, model 0452, Its been in a box never used for a few years, ive tested it with water to see how it sprays, thought i might try it on the front door, and if it was any good, i would do the banisters and panelling in the hallway after. which is a ballache with a brush and roller over 3 floors lol.
Great video Phil. U say it's great on indoor woodwork for flipping houses or rentals. Does that mean u wouldn't recommend it for 'normal' customers? We always use oil based & looking for a good water base alternative. Cheers!
Yes you can use it. I said it more of a case of it being self undercoating, can be applied with next to no prep... Not that I'd advise that.... And you can get away with two coats of you're going over the same colour. I have used it on customers woodwork.. sprayed it with Gxff.. turns out great. I've a couple of videos going live in the next few weeks... Isomat Eggshell and satin. Also worth a look at... But that is their UC/primer followed by two top coats. We use very little oil based now as there's some really good water based out there.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Thanks for the reply. I only found ur channel today as we're looking at getting into spraying & thought the GXFF would be a great entry level sprayer. Must have watched at least 10 of ur videos this afternoon lol! Our goto supplier is Dulux so using the Allcoat would be an ideal choice for us. I'll definitely look out for those videos, we are we're up for trying new paint, it's just a pain to have to order online all the time rather than call in to the store! Keep up the great work!
@@miickyp keep watching... Imay see that Porsche sooner lol I've quite a few on paints, spraying... The Gxff I use mostly as it's such a handy unit. Any questions just ask. Paints... Have you paintwell near you. Tikkurila paint sprayers beautiful with a fine finish tip... Been using Everal Aqua 40 this last week and a 206 FF tip. Paintwell sell tikkurila.. or you can order directly. The key is finding the right paints that spray the best without making it hard for yourself.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I'll keep watching for sure, ur humour is very entertaining & if my views help toward ur Porsche then I'm all in lol. Unfortunately Paintwell in 40+ miles away but I'll look at any online deals I can get, sounds like it's worth a try. As I mentioned we haven't bought the sprayer yet but it'll happen in the next month or so. We plan to start small, some woodwork here & there, mainly spindles as that's the worst job, if u ever do a video on those that would be great. Also contract matt & the occasional ceiling until we get more confident using it. We excited, are u planning on attending the Painting & Decorating Show in Coventry this year?
@@miickyp I'll be there.. I have my public to meet. LoL You seen my vid on spraying spindles? HVLP is ideal for those.. a lot more control. A Gxff and a HVLP is a good combo to start with. Covers most things. A bigger sprayer you may need if doing more spraying at anyone time.
Great video. I'm curious - I sprayed the Zinsser through a cheap Wagner HVLP and it worked, but I spoke to the techs at Wagner and Zinsser and according to all the data sheets etc, the paint needs to be sprayed airless to get the material onto the timber fast enough - it dries so fast that HVLP can't cope with it. I upgraded my sprayer (the old one broke) to the XVLP3500 and would love to continue using the Zinsser as it's the most versatile product I've ever used, it literally goes onto anything! Have you got any tips or tricks that you use to get the job done and maintain your machine? The paint dries so fast and sticks to the hot machine really permanently, I find the clean - up pretty taxing, like every litre or two I have to soak, disassemble and scrub everything..
Hi.... I've used it with my QT5 stage 5 HVLP.. no issues. Clean up on that unit dead easy. I've done quite a bit using it with the Qt5. Is it the hand held unit you have? I slightly thin the paint, not by much and use a 1.8 needle set with mine. Airless.... Low pressure... 210ff tip is usually plenty.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Thanks so much for the swift reply - Yes, mine is the handheld version of the XVLP5000. It’s the heat generated by the turbines that’s the enemy, I think. By messing around with material and air flow, and thinning the paint by 5%, I’m sure it’ll work. I have been using the Fine Spray attachment, designed for stains and such, but I’m tempted to give the wall painting head a go, given the thickness of the paint. I used Dulux Quick Drying Satinwood through the fine tip on a HSL last week and the gun could only just process it all maxed out in the thinnest fan. Very ‘spitty’ but it levelled off ok. They make a thing called the NAST head, which I’m tempted by. So much learning and experimenting to do - and none of it cheap😂 I suspect I’m wasting my money with any machine that didn’t cost a grand!
Hi, if it's spitting it can be the paint is too thick still. That £40 HVLP sprayer I reviewed.. please watch it... it's very good for woodwork. Paint.. change the paint, AllCoat exterior and bedec.. and tikkurila are easy to get hold of and spray great. a bit of thinning, but you'll get great results... with a bit of practice.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Thanks Man - Really appreciate yr thoughtful replies - will persevere with the Allcoat as it sticks to everything so well - I use the red spray bottle of Zinsser degreaser on everything before a light rub down. I really enjoyed my Tikurilla experience a few years back with brush and roller - it lays off super nice - I still think my favourite is F&B Modern eggshell though - and it sprays a treat. It's funny that you say to thin the Dulux a bit more - perhaps that's why it didn't mess up my gun hardly at all - yet when I thinned the F&B my gun was covered - the filter needed rinsing every couple of litres 😅 All the best and thanks for the encouragement. Here's last week's job done: ua-cam.com/video/WD71etXOJI4/v-deo.html
all I willl say is F&B modern eggshell with the right F&B Uc tone, is a joy to spray. Been back doing a house the other week where I did thir kitchen units in F&B, all done with HVLP qt5.. and 4yrs on, still look like new. I'll check your vid out now.. tnx for the support too :D
Hi Phil..how much water did you add to the all in one paint? I contacted Zinsser and they said you cant use an HVLP spayer with it !! But unless im seeing things..again ..you did it no problem.
You can use Hvlp. I've used allcoat Exterior (waterbased) no problem. Thin it enough so when you spray it, it's not pimpled on tye surface, but not over thin that you have it running. Altering the paint flow will help you not put too much paint on. 1.8 needle set is idea
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator thank you Phil..ill give it a go on the black and decker 400 watt spayer and let you know how it goes...or i might use a brush and roller !!!
Hi mate, what % of Water can you safely add to the zinsser all coat to thin it down slightly before it loses its durability properties etc .. cheers Phil
@@antb3334 just a bit of water to allow it to flow. OR, use smith and rogers flow and bond. try a 10mm roller as the first coat then drop down to a 5mm if you dn't think you're happy with it
F&B exterior eggshell is very good. We use it regularly on a house that only ever has f&B on it's outside. We go back every 5-6 yrs to re coat and touch up any areas that may have 'wethered'.
Have you used this on composite doors without any primer? What do you recommend for a composite door? Also what recommendation for a metal painted garage door?
all coat is ideal on a garage door. spot prime any bare areas first.. then away you go. you can use it on the composite door, but KolorBond also do a paint suitable... Bedec MSP will work as well.
Good job. I love the black wb allcoat, although i tend to use to solvent based on garage/front doors. Takes longer to dry but hey, i'm loyal to oil🤷♂️
Hi Phil, do you think I would get a good finish with a tri tech t5 airless using a 208 ultra fine tip? Keep the content coming mate, I think lots of us guys find it really useful and very entertaining 👍
Have used a sample tin years ago on some woodwork on a rental I was doing. Seemed good. Not used it on Doris as video as I've not been supplied with a tin by anyone yet. LoL I'll have to buy one myself. I did try to get an interview with Bradite One Can at the p&D show, but for some reason they declined and turned the offer of promoting the product down ... I don't know why. :(
Hi Phil, I've been enquiring about getting into spraying and what sprayer to use. I've opted for grace 390 cordless for primarily interior emulsioning and I was going to go for GRACO ULTRA MAX for smaller projects (garage doors, UPVC or wood front door) where at the moment I rely on Zinsser all coat. I was told that ULTRA MAX is NOT strong enough for undiluted paints like all coat. Are they wrong(SPRAY DIRECT) or correct in that statement ? I only want a handheld cordless sprayer for undiluted paints for where it doesn't warrant setting up and cleaning a large sprayer. Any advice on this? many thanks
I've not had a handheld... Mainly for the reason it said the pump will last about 100gallon... That includes flushing with water. For basic spraying.. have you seen the £40 hvlp I've tested? If you're doing uPVC, to you may want to get a better quality hvlp.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I see so that's even with a caliber like grace ultra max... fair enough , worth noting. to be fair at this stage I'm only thinking of spraying interior woodwork, kitchen units and lastly walls and ceilings. I've noticed in one of your videos you had a GENTLIN, is that worth getting. I was also at the trade show in Coventry and that's where I first heard about it from SPRAYMAN UK chap.
@@goranmladezic the gentlin is a compressor setup.. ie, Hvlp gun. That's for woodwork, uPVC. But not suitable for ceilings and walls. Have you thought about a gxff or gx21ff?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator do you use gentlin for interior woodwork or do you think gxff might be better performing(I am aware they are two different systems) but nevertheless? I was gonna go for gentlin for interior woodwork and then one of the graco's for emulsion work( Im swaying towards 390 cordless ?
Not a lot Tom, if using 1.8 needle, you may find it needs non. The 1.5 I thinned it for that. The key is not to get it spraying and looking all splattery on the surface when it drys. If its a nice wet coat, it will flow out nice. if it's too thin.. you'll know as it will start to run on you.
@@Shortboxing47 see how it feels when using the mixing stick... If it runs off quite thick, add some water till you're happy it flows off nicely. You don't want it like thin water. Some paints are thin enough to spray straight away. Hence I used a 1.5 needle. That's ideal. If it were thicker paint... You may want a thicker coat going on... a 1.8 needle may be better. Trial an error, as if the paint is warm... It won't need that splash of water to help ease it. But... If you spray and the finish looks pimply... You may need a bit more water to allow it to flow out better... Before it dries.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator yes mate sure i did, think it was the frenchic came out on top ? Have used MSP on my daughters metal windows, Peeled a bit, im forever telling people to stop using cleaning products ie bleach etc on woodwork when cleaning & mops along skirting boards, acts like a paint stripper, do they listen 😠
I used this Zinsser all coat exterior satin in white Must say it’s very pissy paint can’t say I liked it much I did however brush it on so probably makes a difference 🤷🏻♂️
this stuff aint that good phil oil primer undercoat and gloss is still superior oil undercoat works better than all these paints for pvc anyway used zinsser 123 on new plastic loft covers left the job came back a week later you could scrape it off with a finger nail oil undercoat stuck like shit. zinsser coverstain is ok just impossible to apply to thick no flow thin it down and losses all of its opacity no that its got much to begin with
Maybe... Who wants the hassle of oil based paints these days. Plenty of good water based paints. You can attach most stuff off. Did you watch the uPVC scratch test with AllCoat, Frenchic and Bedec MSP?
Would have to say that Zinsser all coat is the worse exterior paint I have ever used. Spent over 700 euro and many hours to paint a new construction wooden greenhouse, all timber painted indoors on new very dry timber and within 3 weeks of being assembled outdoors the paint had discoloured, de-laminated and peeled. Absolute C**p .
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I would certainly like to hear more about others having a problem on bare wood, according to Zinsser, they have not experienced this problem before and that their product was 'fit for purpose' . They gave no recommendation for a separate primer on bare wood, stating that the all coat was ok as a primer and top coat.
For what reason Mark.. spray or brushed? Bedec MSP soft gloss is awesome... although the soft gloss finish is like a good satin/soft sheen finish once dried out.
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator I only tried the bedec for the first time recently. It was lovely stuff with a lot more body than all coat. Beautiful eggshell like finish. I’m going to try it in white.

You don't need a sealer
Hi Phil, love your videos. I've got some pine T & G cladding to put on a ceiling. It has quite a few knots. Will the allcoat block the resins or would you recommend still applying knotting solution first?
Hi, at last someone loving the vids. ;)
all coat won't.
so a few options.
rattle can of shellac knotting... Smith& Rogers Blockade or Zinsser BIN (both you can get in a rattle can)... spray over the knots.

weather dependant .. All coat exterior (water based) will dry quicker so you'll get done quicker.
Other options. Bedec MSP or Bradite OneCan.... all very similar.
Hi Phil
with a Fuji Semi Pro 2 I’ve sprayed with the 123 primer then then AllCoat Satin, a wooden conservatory, 2 exterior wooden windows (one up the top of a ladder 😱) the back wooden composite door And now using the same paints I’ve sprayed 4 windows on the inside.
Cheers G
great to hear... you seen my radiator painting videos??
Hi Phil, great videos learning a lot! I make MDF cupboards and wardrobes, I'm currently using a Wagner Flexio 590 which i have to thin the paint a lot which in turn reduces the sheen of the paint. Could you recommend a sprayer that i don't have to thin the paint? cheers Andy

But also consider Bedec MSP
Multi surface paints.

8bar.. i can't see why not.

So much learning and experimenting to do - and none of it cheap😂
I suspect I’m wasting my money with any machine that didn’t cost a grand!

Hi Phil..how much water did you add to the all in one paint?
I contacted Zinsser and they said you cant use an HVLP spayer with it !!
But unless im seeing things..again ..you did it no problem.
You can use Hvlp. I've used allcoat Exterior (waterbased) no problem. Thin it enough so when you spray it, it's not pimpled on tye surface, but not over thin that you have it running.

How much thinning is required to get this to spray nice through the hvlp Phil?
Not a lot Tom, if using 1.8 needle, you may find it needs non. The 1.5 I thinned it for that. The key is not to get it spraying and looking all splattery on the surface when it drys. If its a nice wet coat, it will flow out nice. if it's too thin.. you'll know as it will start to run on you.

Hi phill how much water do you add to your all coat paint?
Like when you put the paint in the spray gun cup how much water to add then?
