Great to see a good bit of DIY happening, spraying is definitely the way forward. The only thing I’d say as a professional sprayer is that you should make sure you’re using the right mask. That JPS mask looked like it was only a P3 or P3R. This won’t actually filter out airborne paint particles, they will still get into your lungs. You need a mask with ABEK1 or AB1 as a minimum. Otherwise you are risking your health. Just a pointer! Happy spraying 👍🏽
So ... if you have touch ups from hanging pictures/shelves/bumps how will you respray without masking half a furbished room? As I am making a living from painting and decorating I don't see rollers and brushes go anytime soon.
P3R will be more than good enough for filtering out (water-based - which we should all be striving to use where possible for a long long list of reasons) paint particles, these things stop viruses that are massively smaller than the smallest paint particles you're going to see. An ABEK1 filter is for _vapours_ which are a whole different kettle of fish, if you're working with the sorts of vapours where you need that you're going to have the same issue with a roller - though I agree if you are you absolutely should.
AS a decorator who does a lot of new build we use 2 sprayers one doing cielings in white the other doing walls in Magnolia and the time saved makes the work super efficient.
I use the bigger version of this for doing empty full house jobs, it has proved to be an invaluable tool! One issue I found kept happening was when I used the clear decorators film it “held “ moisture from the spray as it’s obviously waterproof. It caused the paint to run down & off causing a lot of clean up. Also it had a tendency to act like a sail as the air hit it. I switched to the brown masking paper car sprayers use. Because it’s slightly heavier it stops the sail effect, it also soaks and holds any overspray. Hope it helps! Cheers for the vid.
I've bought the same type of Wagner unit as shown here and I concur with all the comments. I think it is the way forward with home renovation (at least) and the only "downside" I experienced was the additional mask out required (particularly ceilings). To give you an idea, my lviing room ceiling is approx. 50sqm with massive plaster cornices (150mm) all the way around. When painting using brush roller, just the cornices were an all day job. With this machine, I painted the lot in less than 15 mins. It really can be that quick. The machine itself works perfectly and produces excellent results prodviding you take some care with your paint types. The finish is way better than roller based painting, at least in my view (i've done a lot of that in my past) and if the surface is not 100% virgin, coverage is great. If virgin, you just need a bit more overlap in your paint strokes is all. Well done on the vid.
Im part way through a full house reno. First few rooms i rolled then i got fed up so bought this sprayer about 6 weeks ago. The finish is so good. I've only used it for white mist coats and white matt so far. Can't say I've got the hang of a 10 minute clean down yet though, it seems to take me ages. But high victorian ceilings are a breeze, and i'm totally converted. I've even bought a smaller sprayer for coloured walls.
I've got a smaller Wagner unit and they are good. It's all in the prep and you can achieve very good results. They are also good for spraying furniture so you get a nice smooth finish rather than seeing the brush marks.
When you spray ceiling and walls in different colours, then spray walls first. You would do ceiling first when rolling, but it is much easier to mask the walls than masking a ceiling.
I do the opposite, but I use spray shields. Sometimes I need to do some touch up by hand, but I still find it faster than masking everything. I do ceiling, trim/doors then walls. I don't expect my apprentices to be able spray using just a shield without some extensive training, but once you know how, you can turn over a house in no time.
Two years ago i painted a whole house with a roller😳 i took me three weeks. Last week i paint sprayed approx 3 quarters of a house and it took my 5 days😳 much better finish too! I’m a sprayer converter 😂
Did the three weeks include all the prep too? If you did a good job I assume prep less to do this time. Genuine questions as that's a lot of time saved.
Spraying is the way to go. I'm a decorator by trade and love it, the finish is unbeatable. I painted 2 coats on all of the woodwork in a 4 bedroom house in a day would've taken me 3 days by brush.
I’ve had my Wagner 250R Pro for two years in the box. Now I need to paint a 4.6m high wall x 10m I will use it but I’m quite nervous. You’re demonstration has encouraged me thanks.
Soo as a decorator of about 15 years thinking of edging into spraying soon! But what i will say is can u get a just as good finish with a brush yes! Can you paint as quick as you spray yes! If you spend all that time and money masking up . As anything though spraying has its place great for certain jobs although a bad spray job is a nightmare to rectify !
Thanks for this, it couldn't have landed at a more opportune moment. I'm about to tackle a 27x15ft room, walls and ceilings and the thought of spending days with a roller was filling me with dread. Good summary and thanks for saving me the hassle.
I’ve got a smaller Wagner sprayer & renovated & sprayed my aluminium garden furniture with an excellent finish, down side painting inside is the environmental impact with all the extra masking with plastic sheeting, it’s just getting the settings right that makes all the difference + a bit of practice!!
Spraying first of two layers, then last third one applied with sprayer, but finishing touch with a roller (with no additional paint) - works like a charm every single time. Also you can add the roll texture in the second layer and just spray the third one on top of that, if you want a faded roller texture.
24:00 touch ups. Trust me, anyone can get a spray finish touch up with roller or even brush. I've been working with Wagner, Graco units worth thousands etc the past 8 years, industrial sprayer day in day out. Thin down your product with suitable thinner/water/glycol etc and get flock foam rollers and take in larger sections. No need to respray unless your surface area is more than a couple metre square. Great job by the way, truly a master of all trades, you're universal logic and can-do attitude serves you well. your wagner airless is a fine investment, get back your time. Had some painters scoff at me, claiming touch ups can't be done, blacks and strong colours are impossible to work with. Have hundreds of customers to say otherwise, not even other professionals can see where I've done remedial work to others damage.
@@zarasbubble1748 as in a low volume gravity gun or airbrush? You'd think so, but it would involve masking off potential areas of overspray. I normally take in a larger section to a corner or spray down or up way out of a person's eyeline or critical light. Brush or foam roller works that way too. It's extremely hard to feather a wet edge with some of these water borne paints and guns. It either is a visible patch in sheen, or goes on too dry at the edge. Hope it works out for you if you need to give it a bash
I found the airless sprayer the best thing to use to painting coving/cornice. No brush marks, just a flat smooth finish 👍 I wish I kept my Wagner unit, guess I’ll be buying a new one when I do my new place up
I have been a brush and roller man since 1970 and recently I noticed that I can see pretty good without wearing my glasses (unheard of in the past years with my eyes) so I recently bought Wagner Pro 190 along with a few accessories online and can hardly wait for a call about painting so I can spray it instead!
I have barely ever painted in my life, but I now flip properties self employed for a living, and decorating is something you can save tons of money on doing it yourself. I got a 350m, never sprayed before in my life. Have done my entire house to such a high standard. Thanks to UA-cam and videos from folks like yourself, it was so easy to setup and get the hang of so quickly. I did 9 rooms in 1 day including the ceilings, far simpler cleanup and overall one of the best investments ive made recently.
Blimey, I’m always amazed at your ability and crack on attitude. Whilst not having any experience spraying rooms, I have thought it looks the way to go. To be honest though, as quick as that looked.. the pre and post prep I imagine is involved 😳 I’ll stick to roller, brush and a beer or two😄. Great video though, enjoy your Chanel and have learned a lot from all of your videos. 👍👍
As a flooring installer if you are getting carpet put back down they will be happy you left the old tack strip there for them. I just brought this unit looking forward to giving it a go.
I’m doing my first spray job in the kitchen today. I’m all about the ease. Especially where the finish looks so good. Hopefully this goes to plan. I can deal with the prep work so fingers crossed 🤞 thanks for the video. Very detailed and helpful. Good luck with the rest of your projects
I seem to live a parallel life to this guy, doing all the same stuff. Ive had two of these 250 and the 350 they are really good, I did a large semi all the way through in a day, however this was on an empty house! On fresh plaster sometimes the spray doesn't adhere too Well and In part I've had to sand down the wall after so when I re spray over it sticks... or just roller 1st then spray. Onky best for emulsion too ! Overall I'd say they are better than a roller, the finish is far better!!
Great helpful project...loved to sprayed finish ...looks very professional! 👏🏻👏🏻I loved all the colours but the blue colour was striking maybe you could ask your girls to give a little tour of the rooms in between projects/ school and just enjoying their space 😉🤗🙋🏻♀️🇬🇧💕jane
What a revelation! A mate has one of these (yellow) units and has offered it to me. I'm a decorator. It looks like I need to have a go. One tip when doing cabinets or trim with a roller - always lay the paint off with a brush. You can get a 'Laying Off Brush' specifically for it. yes, you need to be quick with water based paints, but the finish can be exquisite. Floetrol keeps the paint 'open' for a bit longer, and for big panels, wipe them down with a wet cloth immediately before painting to give you half a minute longer to get the paint on. The best paint I've encountered so far is F&B Modern Eggshell or Tikurilla, but the paint tech is evolving all the time so I fully expect to see Dulux, Leyland and so on bringing new stuff. Oh, Zinsser do some magic paint - and even B&Q's Valspar emulsion is exquisite. Great vid. New sub.
I bought the same unit for our recent living room reno, sprayed everything from mist coat to white ceiling and coving, top color, all the trim and built in mdf cabinets and bookcases. The impression of using more paint was a bit disconcerting to begin with. And with young kids I back rolled the walls to aid touching up. Overall, well chuffed with the finish and will certainly be spraying from now on...
If you want to get rid from that fuzzy corner edge at 14:03, next time paint the paper tape with the color you are cutting from. It will seal the gaps and prime the paper tape, not allowing the other color (the dark blue in this case), to soak underneath it and leave those marks. Great video. Thank you. New subscriber here. :)
Clear caulk also works great. I usually do that when I'm masking flooring. Especially when it's really nice hardwood . Gives you a Lazer sharp line. It also works great for doing accent walls with heavy texture
Great job, though it looks like your pressure wasn’t high enough. When the pressure isn’t high enough it leaves that inconsistent edge (really obvious when you painted the dark blue)and can spatter❤️✨
Amazing thing really... Yes need to be flushed in the end ( cleaned ) but also you must clean roller/brush ... and it's more cleaner.. This is game changer... it's simply easier and makes painting more fun. Btw i feel you, it's really pain painting white on white... lol
We bought a project house a few years back and I invested in an earlex HVLP sprayer. I had great success with it on the walls and woodwork but as shown in this video it’s all in the preparation! And once a wall has been sprayed you cannot touch-up a scuff with a 4” roller! The finish you get is exceptional for DIY. If you do have a go it’s also worth using the right masking tape like Q1 tapes or Tesa.
Been watching your a channel for a while and must say very impressive. Watch the Wall panel video and the trouble you had with the paint finish.Try using Bedec aqua gloss/satin or Benjamin Moore paints. you will find the difference amazing, especially BM paints. If you want a proper acrylic then go with bedec. THE leyland paint imo are not the best
Hi Bud, I have been very ill last 12 Years and live in a 2 Bed Flat that now NEEDS a good Lick of Paint and because of my Condition Using a Roller/Brush would;nt be any good for me. I have watched a few of these vids now and i;m only 10Mins in and it;s LOOKING more and more Likely i;ll have to get 1 of these [Maybe NOT the 1 your using] But a Wagner sprayer is Deff on the Table Which will also come in very good use for my Grown up Daughter to paint her House [I;LL END UP DOING IT] THANKS for uploading this Buddy.
We have just bought a four bedroom house and need to decorate every room, so a sprayer was on my shopping list. In a previous life I used to spray cars and I've always thought spraying a house would be a much better for speed and finish. Thanks for sharing!
Perfect. Last couple of years i waste so much water to clean out rollers and brushes after painting. I definitely investing now to same machine. Save time save water save paint and save money. Well need cover everything but if you compare time with brush and roller still faster i think cover everything and then just spray. Make easy everything for sure
I’m doing a whole house with one of these and all paintwork and have fantastic results but you must clean it to maintain good results.ceilings come out sport on ,I’ll never want to roller another ceiling again
Every tool is great for a specific job. E.g a impact driver is great for framing and rough jobs, a hand screwdriver is good for door handles and your more likely to slip and scratch the handle with a impact driver. With decorating, a sprayer is brilliant if you have lots of rooms to do. If you only got one room, it’s probably easier and quicker prep wise to use a roller.
I bought an airless like this one and found it a faff with all the buckets and paint can etc. I got the Wagner with the hopper that you just pour paint into and it was a lot less messy set up
Great video... We are in the process of painting a whole house and I had been thinking of getting a sprayer. You convinced me. I have a large family and they all have their own famliesto take care of. So to get them all together at the same time to
Another great video again, I loved my sprayer complete agree with you in the prep but isn’t that in any job we do it also out ways the quality of the finish you get. The only gripe is is I would like a shorter line 1. Less paint to prime, 2. Could do smaller jobs. 3. Not in the way all the time.
Hi bud great to watch an expert! I bought similar product to start on a renovation project. However the instructions were hard to understand and I tried to use without flushing it through first. I cannot get it to spray now and think I may have flooded it. I e since try to flush the paint through the machine without success. Any ideas how I may do this as it was a costly piece of machinery not to work? Also are you supposed to add a little water to the paint?
My 18mo son sleeps through sds drilling! Less tiptoeing around sleeping children when they're young means you can make as much noise as you want later!
tikkurila anti reflex 2 for ceilings every time. its specifically designed for the job. dulux works well but doesnt always cover if you had to do a lot of filling. on balance if you want a cheaper more effective product, wickes ultra matt will cover exceptionally well and is cheap. if its a rental then ultra matt if its private then AR2!
Interesting to watch your film and hear what you think RC. Well done on keeping things quiet for your babbies by doing the work at night. I lived in Bavaria for 5 years and by law you cannot do loud building work, including DIY, between 12 midday and 2pm which was helpful because we had our 1st baby at this time and I worked from home as a freelance assistant animator, which is quiet work anyway. After 2 homebirths and raising our 2 babes to womanhood, I taught them both to point walls in lime and even employed both of them on one pointing job. Living in the countryside my house is my business base, I'm a lime putty plasterer who doesn't like to do the painting and prefer it when the client's get a painter in. Instead of brushing on the paint I use an electric sprayer which has a small reservoir, so I wonder how much quicker the airless system will be now that I have a whole dustbin of paint as my reservoir, it could really speed up the paint work. The only painting I will do is lime washing which I also make slake & make myself, lime putty is such a versatile material, you can do your floor, walls and ceilings plus the inside and outside painting with just one product as your base and no PVA's or waterproof chemicals added. The only problem with spraying is having to mask everything off and all the waste plastic, mastic, caulk and tape that ends up in landfill when we finish which is why I use and re-use a thicker plastic sheet with tape & staples for the spraying work, so my man expense is mostly masking tape and staples As you said, all the cleaning and the rigmarole of using this system for a small space just isn't worth the hassle. Best of luck with your family, I'm glad to be a daddy, we both jumped in at the deep-end and went for it in our 30's which luckily turned out to be the best age for child rearing, any later would be a nightmare.
A very comprehensive review and I agree with much of the findings. We have the same Wagner and there's no doubt it covers the area very quickly. My only real complaint is the amount of mist which finds its way to the floor. In our case the carpet was being replaced so it didn't matter but I wasn't expecting quite so much dusting of the carpet. Personally I think you should have gone up/down and then left/right to ensure coverage. It also took us a while to figure out the by reversing the spray tip (green part) 180 degrees it allowed you to clear any blockages in the head. Overall I found the masking a bit of a drag and it's easy to miss bits. Apart from that a great video but I will only be using the sprayer for large projects.
When spraying paint with any type of sprayer, you do need to cover everything you don't want painted. That includes the floor. But realistically if you have a floor you don't want paint on, you need to cover the floor even if you use rollers or brushes because they too can easily spatter paint. No shortcuts for masking in other words.
I've just started a new job today with a newly purchased wagner 350m sprayer. Never used one before. But the results are absolutely amazing. The coverage. The finish and the speed is unbelievable. There is no way on earth can you paint using roller and brush as fast as you can with a sprayer and the level of finish you get with the sprayer. I had painted x4 bedrooms 2 bathrooms and landing and stairs in 2hrs which is unreal. Great video mate
Just bought the Graco Max handheld sprayer 2nd hand for a cabinet job I’m doing. Hopefully will pay fir itself in terms of labour on this 1st job.slightly alarming that Graco only promise 200L out of the pump before it fails, but we’ll see.....would be interesting to check back in a year and see your thoughts on longevity.
Hi mate, don't know much about Wagners, but just get a 308 FFLP tip and it doesn't matter which machine I guess. The FFLP Tips are Graco I think. Maybe wagner do the same. Nor sure. The machine I got was 900 quid with all the hoses etc. Can't imagine Wagner will be cheaper.
Hey. We are looking to paint the woodwork dark green and the walls a light grey. How would you go about this? Do skirting first and overspray into walls? Then mask skirting once dry and go over the overspray? Would it cover? Or is there a way to do walls first and then woodwork as to me it would make more sense to go lighter then darker? But how would I mask up the walls without it damaging the walls after? Even with the masking tape for new paint I find it risky? Any tips? Also how many coats of spray would you say a wall and woodwork takes? And does it take longer in between coats? Sorry so many questions.
Great video. I'm really tempted with one if these sprayers. One thing I worry about is overspray and a plasterer mate of mine said whenever he's seen this done, white must was everywhere. Thanls
The reason there's is alot if overspray is because like this guy he as just bought a sprayer and gave it ago . .. the way this guy sprays is not how its done the walls probably covered in runs.. this guy is a amateur...
I'm about to paint a pretty massive space in my basement. BLACK ceiling (rafters), light gray walls, along with dark gray walls, and a powder room that will be a terra cotta color. Are there any pitfalls in using a large sprayer with these darker paints? Obviously the ceiling will come first...should I then work my way down in the paint colors from black to dark gray to light gray to terra cotta? I'll be using a brand new Wagner Control Pro 130. For the record, I am considering just painting the powder room with a roller since it's only a 6x6 space (feet, not meters)...so the possibility exists that I won't use the sprayer for that small space. Thanks...your video was really helpful.
Do you have experience using a spray for gloss work? You mention they're good for trim but it's not clear if you're just painting with a standard emulsion or not.
Extremely informative video with some damn good advice! The Restoration Couple May I enquire as to the low tack masking you're using? It looks like it's superb on fresh paint surfaces!
Hello. I’ve started painting newly plastered walls. The skirting, coving and doors are installed but not painted yet. Couple of questions: - for the walls already painted with roller, would you recommend sanding them before applying additional coats with sprayer - not sure why it’s better to paint the trim first and walls, ceilings second? Thx!
Q1 make pre-taped masking paper. The size you need is easy enough to hand hold as the paper comes folded on the role, then you just unfold it to full width once applied.
The main problem with spraying is that if you don't back roll it, any marks that need touching up at a later date show up like hell it really flashes, new builds and ceilings is all I would use an airless on
Sorry.. big fingers... So I am going to buy a sprayer to paint the whole house in off white. Like you said that the prep is the most important part of the job. That's where my kids will come in. They WILL have time to do the prep. Then I will spray everything at one time. Again thanks for a great video. Stay safe!!!
How much did you water down the paint before spraying. I bought the same machine and found that it would constantly not keep pressure. Also curious to know what paint you used on the skirting
I am looking to buy a paint strayer for indoor and outdoor use......Wagner seems best brand buy am not sure whether I need airless or not? I am looking to do walls, doors and fence panels. Also noticed you dont add 10% water which I have seen other people recommend.....what's your view on this? And finally ....am assuming these are good for primer, undercoat and other emulsions or eggshell finishes.
Best paint sprayer for newbies is a Graco gx21hf. This will do woodwork(trim) or walls. It has a hopper but will also suck from a bucket. They now do a battery gx21hf.
Graco I'd say are far superior. I'll give you a massive tip for spraying wood work. Use a 308 tip for everything and spray Akzo Nobel Aqualit (Supercryl) Spray Applied Waterborne Enamel Topcoat from Holmans specialist paints. I believe they do an undercoat too. Don't water it down it's ready to spray. This 308 tip with this will give you so much control compared to a 310 or 210. I've always had runs trying to spray satin wood with a 210 or 310- nightmare. Also this paint for all your trim, doors, skirting and arcs is a game changer. Superb finish.
@@benwilkinson5457 Great info mate thanks, I'll look for those paint when the time comes. Would you not rate the Wagner for woodwork? Appreciate that Graco probably a better machine but that is reflected in the cost and at this moment I can't really justify the extra cost.
Amazing review. I had a Wagner airless years ago and did a whole house in a weekend when we moved in. However it really needs to be done when you have no carpets and clear rooms. We are moving again and need to go through the whole process again. I am thinking of spraying again. Do you find the finish better with the bigger Wagner? I like the ease of the portable Greco. Or do I need both ideally for a large house? 4 bed 1200 sq feet Ideally from a cost point of view I’d just get the bigger unit, acknowledging the paint waste
The same brand as the big sprayer, Wagner, has hand held models for literally 50 bucks and they work just fine. I think the W100 ultra cheapo I got can do 5 square meters in 10 minutes so the flow isn't massive, but it's not going to be on any handheld. I did find a 1.4 liter accessory container for it that fits, so that will cut down on the refills a little. It's possible this other brand of handheld is better, but 10 times better, I have my doubts. It's nice to be able to get into a perfectly fine sprayer for almost no money, just to see how you get on. They do have intermediary sets between the very cheapest and these huge units also.
@16:26 does it matter if the skirting board paint gets on the walls a little. im about to spray the whole house skirting board and door trims and was going to mask the walls to protect from the satinwood paint getting on the walls but noticed yours went on the walls a bit. Does it really matter and result in problems with the wall paint going on it. both paints used on trim and walls would be a form of water based paint. Thanks
Good morning Tim Regarding masking, even when I roll walls I stills mask the top edge of the skirting boards to stop the splatter from the roller, and regarding clean down time rollers take a while to clean properly Can you use solvent based paint with the airless spray, I always find acrylic paint on woodwork tends to wear more quickly than solvent paint. Loved the video and looking forward to the workshop cladding. Keep safe.
Yes the larger machine will but the handheld one I went for water based only. I’ve had good success with acrylic paints over the years but much better on new wood than over anything painted and as lots of our woodwork is white it just yellows to quickly to use solvent.
Although you masked off everything, and it didn't really show in the video, but how much paint dust is generated? Could you use this on a carpeted room with furniture if you covered the items with sheets? Would the dust travel to other rooms if the doors are shut but not sealed?. Also, did you try using an cardboard sheet to mask the walls/ceiling, where you just move the cardboard with other hand, instead of tape? Finally. Did you have to thin the paint at all? Does it just work straight out of the pot?
Regarding spraying cabinets. Benjamin Moore Advance or Teknos Futura Aqua (both waterborne alkyds) applied with Two Fussy Blokes mini rollers, and you be hard pressed to tell the furniture wasn't sprayed. Both paints are very hard wearing, and resist hand oils, which 100% water based paints always fail on in my experience.
just about to buy a Wagner 250M, when spraying, do people just do a single coat spray and do you have to do it again with a second spray coat. When using a roller i normally do 2 coats, sometimes 3 depending on the colour.
just judge the first layer yourself. Usually, after drying and shrinkage, it is always obvious that a second coat is needed. ( english by google translator)
Hi I bought me the big wagener for a project. I wasn't so happy. There was a nice smooth finish at some areas but some areas wasn't so great. I don't know why maybe lack or less experiences. However I wasn't happy with the result/effort/investing time etc if I would just it for my business from my experience I'm quicker with roller
I painted our 3 bedrooms last week, one room we did "egyptian cotton" in silk and one wall a similar blue to yours. Did the cotton and left for a week, went to mask up with low tack frog tape for the blue, pulled the tape off straight afterwards and it peeled all the cotton colour off! Cleaned the walls down with sugar soap before so don't know why it didn't adhere properly. I could never mask off like you did as it doesn't seem to work with dulux silk! 😔
hey. great video ;) I came here for the wagner review, but I hope you don't mind me asking - what's the smaller spray gun called? I'd love to spray paint some furniture after I'm done with the whole house (for which I'm getting a pro250), but I feel like I'll need something smaller and fully hand-held for that. Like the one you have :)
Thanks. Will look into that before the next project. 👍
So ... if you have touch ups from hanging pictures/shelves/bumps how will you respray without masking half a furbished room? As I am making a living from painting and decorating I don't see rollers and brushes go anytime soon.
P3R will be more than good enough for filtering out (water-based - which we should all be striving to use where possible for a long long list of reasons) paint particles, these things stop viruses that are massively smaller than the smallest paint particles you're going to see. An ABEK1 filter is for _vapours_ which are a whole different kettle of fish, if you're working with the sorts of vapours where you need that you're going to have the same issue with a roller - though I agree if you are you absolutely should.
ABEK1 3M cartridge for gas/vapours? But it should also be used with P3 prefilter.
AS a decorator who does a lot of new build we use 2 sprayers one doing cielings in white the other doing walls in Magnolia and the time saved makes the work super efficient.
how do you deal with touch ups? Do you go over with a roller?
I use the bigger version of this for doing empty full house jobs, it has proved to be an invaluable tool! One issue I found kept happening was when I used the clear decorators film it “held “ moisture from the spray as it’s obviously waterproof. It caused the paint to run down & off causing a lot of clean up. Also it had a tendency to act like a sail as the air hit it. I switched to the brown masking paper car sprayers use. Because it’s slightly heavier it stops the sail effect, it also soaks and holds any overspray. Hope it helps! Cheers for the vid.
Good call. Saved me a frustrating learn cycle.
@@nathancumming1 thank you
I am thinking about buying this unit for my project just a question how coats need to be done for good finishing.
Do you use same sheen on crown molding as on the ceiling ? What sheen do you prefer for ceilings and crown molding ?
What about baseboards? Is it baseboards first, then walls? Then ceiling?
If your spraying a complete room start with woodwork, then walls then finish ceilings last. Masking it this way is a lot easier
Arno. You answered the question I was about to ask for the very reasons you describe. Thank you.
What a diy man this fella is! Inspiring
Three weeks to paint an average house is a very long time. I would expect to turn a room around in 1.5 days using a brush and roller.
@@applejack4225 so a 3 bedroom house with 9 separate rooms would rake you 13.5 working days?
Thanks for this. You've convinced me to get one for my whole house and barn reno.
Spraying is the way to go. I'm a decorator by trade and love it, the finish is unbeatable. I painted 2 coats on all of the woodwork in a 4 bedroom house in a day would've taken me 3 days by brush.
I see comments saying you can’t roller touch ups because the finish is different. If you have to repair walls, how to you reblend the finish.
Likewise
That's about 30 minutes 1st coat ceiling 2nd coat ditto, 2 hours walls 2nd coat ditto total 5 hours, woodwork extra
.
I’ve got a smaller Wagner sprayer & renovated & sprayed my aluminium garden furniture with an excellent finish, down side painting inside is the environmental impact with all the extra masking with plastic sheeting, it’s just getting the settings right that makes all the difference + a bit of practice!!
I hate my smaller wagner sprayer. It sputters and makes a mess.
Nice comment JG! There are a lot of nay-sayers in the dec trade unfortunately, but fortunately for both of us.
I thought you could also get one of those small handheld sprayers and re-spray the small section that way if you really wanted to?
@@zarasbubble1748 as in a low volume gravity gun or airbrush? You'd think so, but it would involve masking off potential areas of overspray. I normally take in a larger section to a corner or spray down or up way out of a person's eyeline or critical light. Brush or foam roller works that way too. It's extremely hard to feather a wet edge with some of these water borne paints and guns. It either is a visible patch in sheen, or goes on too dry at the edge. Hope it works out for you if you need to give it a bash
I found the airless sprayer the best thing to use to painting coving/cornice. No brush marks, just a flat smooth finish 👍
I wish I kept my Wagner unit, guess I’ll be buying a new one when I do my new place up
I have been a brush and roller man since 1970 and recently I noticed that I can see pretty good without wearing my glasses (unheard of in the past years with my eyes) so I recently bought Wagner Pro 190 along with a few accessories online and can hardly wait for a call about painting so I can spray it instead!
Brilliant bit of kit and to confirm I bought it based on your video demo. Thanks again and keeps the vids coming much appreciated.
Hello, how did it go?
This is the most informative review on this product. I might just buy it.
This is the best video for a newbie i have watched and i have watched alot of videos. Well done
It also works great for doing accent walls with heavy texture
...actually enjoyed watching paint dry!
Fantastic achievement doing so much in such a short time. Spray finish looks great.
😎👍✅
Excellent. Off to buy a Wagner Control Pro 250m today. Thank you for your timely review.
Excellent video Tim. Could you do a video on masking as I’m not sure what film to use
I would appreciate this too please
Me as well. My masking never leaves clean edges.
Frogtape for the clean lines and Fossa truemask masking film over the top.
Thank you for your insights and impressions using the sprayer . . . very useful!
Every tool is great for a specific job. E.g a impact driver is great for framing and rough jobs, a hand screwdriver is good for door handles and your more likely to slip and scratch the handle with a impact driver.
With decorating, a sprayer is brilliant if you have lots of rooms to do. If you only got one room, it’s probably easier and quicker prep wise to use a roller.
thanks - excellent video and you covered it quite in depth
I bought an airless like this one and found it a faff with all the buckets and paint can etc. I got the Wagner with the hopper that you just pour paint into and it was a lot less messy set up
Great job mate. The Wagner's make painting a room so much quicker, good little machines.
Great video... We are in the process of painting a whole house and I had been thinking of getting a sprayer.
You convinced me. I have a large family and they all have their own famliesto take care of. So to get them all together at the same time to
Have just bought the 250 and waiting to do a property without carpets down. Can’t wait to use it now.
Great product have you used for oil based products if so how was the finish ?cheers in advance
tikkurila anti reflex 2 for ceilings every time. its specifically designed for the job. dulux works well but doesnt always cover if you had to do a lot of filling. on balance if you want a cheaper more effective product, wickes ultra matt will cover exceptionally well and is cheap. if its a rental then ultra matt if its private then AR2!
The only problem with spraying is having to mask everything off and all the waste plastic, mastic, caulk and tape that ends up in landfill when we finish which is why I use and re-use a thicker plastic sheet with tape & staples for the spraying work, so my man expense is mostly masking tape and staples
As you said, all the cleaning and the rigmarole of using this system for a small space just isn't worth the hassle.
Hi there, great video very helpful! So you think the 250M is fine for spraying trim and doors fitted? (As well as walls) not too powerful?
Well done.
Best video I've watched as I'm investing in both of the tools which you've used.
Thanks
Excellent video , very informative, answered all my questions
Saw a video on painthq where showed the masking process to spray
Excellent video, can you advise what is your recommendation for choosing the paint? What kind do you recommend? Many thanks
I’d like to know this too!
It looks like frog tape (yellow) to me, if so it’s brill stuff, wouldn’t paint without it now a days
Hello. I’ve started painting newly plastered walls. The skirting, coving and doors are installed but not painted yet. Couple of questions:
- for the walls already painted with roller, would you recommend sanding them before applying additional coats with sprayer
- not sure why it’s better to paint the trim first and walls, ceilings second?
Thx!
Q1 make pre-taped masking paper. The size you need is easy enough to hand hold as the paper comes folded on the role, then you just unfold it to full width once applied.
The main problem with spraying is that if you don't back roll it, any marks that need touching up at a later date show up like hell it really flashes, new builds and ceilings is all I would use an airless on
Totally agree,
Same here, painting 39 years.Flashes piss me right off!
you can also get painting systems for auto fill rollers. if thats the finish you prefer
Sorry.. big fingers...
It’s always good to back roll smooth wall especially when it comes time to do repairs and annual touch up
Less flashing if you do it that way
I am looking to buy a paint strayer for indoor and outdoor use......Wagner seems best brand buy am not sure whether I need airless or not? I am looking to do walls, doors and fence panels. Also noticed you dont add 10% water which I have seen other people recommend.....what's your view on this? And finally ....am assuming these are good for primer, undercoat and other emulsions or eggshell finishes.
I love painting with quality brushes and good rollers, spraying looks to much of a hassle...
Best paint sprayer for newbies is a Graco gx21hf. This will do woodwork(trim) or walls. It has a hopper but will also suck from a bucket. They now do a battery gx21hf.
Is the Wager in the video not suitable for woodwork?
Must have a look at the Graco in that case.
4 bed 1200 sq feet
Ideally from a cost point of view I’d just get the bigger unit, acknowledging the paint waste
Good video dude! First time I’ve seen Wagner’s HEA.
Excellent run-down on doing this!
Do you dilute the paint with water ??
Fantastic video … so practical/real world and down to earth .. pros and cons. Well presented .. will be watching more :)
To repaint kitchen cabinets should I roll, brush or spray
@16:26 does it matter if the skirting board paint gets on the walls a little. im about to spray the whole house skirting board and door trims and was going to mask the walls to protect from the satinwood paint getting on the walls but noticed yours went on the walls a bit. Does it really matter and result in problems with the wall paint going on it. both paints used on trim and walls would be a form of water based paint. Thanks
How is the blow back clean up for interior house
Thanks for the info Tim, guess what I've just bought!!! 😂
rooms looking spot on!! I wish I had the drive that you do 👌
keep up the good work buddy.
Good morning Tim
Regarding masking, even when I roll walls I stills mask the top edge of the skirting boards to stop the splatter from the roller, and regarding clean down time rollers take a while to clean properly
Can you use solvent based paint with the airless spray, I always find acrylic paint on woodwork tends to wear more quickly than solvent paint.
How you deal with repairs like when you need to touch up patch on wall ?
just about to buy a Wagner 250M, when spraying, do people just do a single coat spray and do you have to do it again with a second spray coat. When using a roller i normally do 2 coats, sometimes 3 depending on the colour.
just judge the first layer yourself. Usually, after drying and shrinkage, it is always obvious that a second coat is needed. ( english by google translator)
What extension pole did you purchase? Is there a link anywhere? Great vid!!
6 months on do you recommend this? What down falls etc
It's very common... Even if you prep well if previous paint jobs haven't been prepped well then that's often where it will fail...
AWESOME JOB MATE, WE HAVE LEARNED A LOT FOM THIS VIDEO, WITH YOUR EXPERIENCE,COULD THE LARGER SPRAY BE USED FOR THE ENTIRE ROOM???
We did a full 4 bed house spray recently. Its on the cabin build playlist.
@@TheRestorationCouple We appreciate you feed back
hey. great video ;) I came here for the wagner review, but I hope you don't mind me asking - what's the smaller spray gun called? I'd love to spray paint some furniture after I'm done with the whole house (for which I'm getting a pro250), but I feel like I'll need something smaller and fully hand-held for that. Like the one you have :)
Graco Ultra 👍
Good video.. do you have to dilute the paint?
