Gunslinger 10. Hold on to love Over the years I have come to appreciate just how good the first album is when Squawk and the two that followed the first album got left behind but now I play it all the time
BUDGIE !!!!! how I love that band, great stuff also brilliant guitar work! my top songs are: 1. parents, 2. zoom club, 3. young is a world, 4. black velvet stallion, 5. napoleon bona parts1&2, 6. breaking all the house rules, 7. hammer & tongs, 8. forearm smash, 9. turn to stone, 10. heavy revolution, the positions might change from time to time and also I haven´t heard their first album for quite a long time so it´s excluded here.
Budgie have been my favourite band for the longest time that I’ve liked bands for. The song that introduced me to Budgie was Heavy Revolution. Still can’t get enough of it. The Power Supply album is awesome!
I discovered Budgie in 73.Buying their 2nd album. Squawk! I found this, and many other great bands in what was called 'The Import Bin'. It was one of my favorite albums in that year.
My Budgie vinyl collection of all their first issue albums (MCA etc) are my prized possessions of my entire record collection. There is no way I could pick a top 10...period. I have had them since 1970 and plan to leave them to my kids who grew up listening to their dads very loud hifi. Let those if us who have heard this band be thankful we did as they were UNIQUE and ahead of their time on so many levels.
So So So Underrated. Saw Them many Times in The Early 70s.....During The tour for Never Turn Your Back on a Friend they played a Blistering Set At The Marquee in London...Absolutely Awesome band....Great Vid Pete
I'm a huge fan of the band, I really enjoy all the songs in your TOP 10, here's mine. 1) "Napoleon Bona-Part One & Two" 2) "I Turned to Stone" 3) "Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman" 4) "Breadfan" 5) "Hot as a Docker's Armpit" 6) "If I Were Brittania I'd Waive the Rules" 7) "Melt the Ice Away" 8) "Breaking All the House Rules" 9) "Crash Course in Brain Surgery" 10) "In the Grip of a Tyrefitter's Hand" Honorable mentioned which any rock/metal fan should listen: "Keeping a Rendezvous" "Justice" "Homicidal Suicidal" They have so many amazing songs but their management has kinda failed because it is hard to find their albums. Budgie is easily one of the most influential metal bands of all-time.
I believe what made Budgie so great was that they didn't make it big, and remained a little secret to their real fans. I saw them live a couple of times in the early 80s and never at a sell out stadium, but in pubs. That is how every great band becomes great, up close and personal, but once big and famous, then goes the heart and soul of any band. Budgie kept it real until the end. Good track list by the way, but number one for me was always Napoleon 1&2. R.I.P Burke ❤️
1: Breadfan 2: Napoleon Bona Parts 1 & 2 3: Guts 4: Whisky River 5: Zoom Club 6: Parents 7: Baby Please Don't Go 8: Crash Course In Brain Surgery 9: Who Do You Want For Your Love 10: Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman
Budgie is the soundtrack of my youth! Burke Shelley and Tony Bourge are the best in the world! The song "Parents" exploded my head since 1.971! The music of Budgie is eternal, wonderful, beautiful, amazed, fantastic! Ever! 🎸🎸🎸🏆🎖️☮️✌️👍
Had to revisit this one. I foolishly never listened to parents all the way through, what a great emotive song. Tonys haunting guitar refrain is so powerful. 1. Breaking all the house rules 2. Parents 3 .Black velvet stallion 4. I turned to stone 5 .Young is the world 6. Forearm smash 7 .Baby please dont go 8. Crime against the world 9. Wondering what everyone knows. 10. I cant see my feelings.
Just discovered them some months ago and I can‘t stop listening, so powerful, so many ideas, it‘s swinging and it makes me doing noises... 10. Guts 9. Sky High Percentage 8. Breadfan 7. Parents 6. Zoom Club 5. Hot as a docker‘s armpit 4. You‘re the biggest thing since powdered milk 3. Rape of the locks 2. Stranded 1. Nude disintegrating parachutist woman
10. Guts/ Homicidal Suicidal 9. I'm compressing the comb on a cockerel's head 8. Who do you want for your love 7. Young is a World 6. Zoom Club 5. You're the biggest thing since powdered milk 4. Hot as a docker's armpit 3. Rape of the locks 2. Breadfan 1. Nude disintegrating parachutist woman
Yes, Budgie. One of those bands that had slipped threw the cracks of my youth and only heard of after hearing Metallica doing breadfan. After listening to their catalog over and over since, I cannot speak highly enough of this band and wished I had heard them way back when. Thanks for a great video sir
Far out thanks, so glad to have found this, was actually looking for a sort of best of,something I would never do for any band btw ,but wanting to turn yet another person onto them and was looking for heavier stuff from them:) grew up with them also , probably liked the covers before the music :) thanks again Keep Rockin. "Peace! Rick
So underrated band..Top 10: 10.Wondering What Everyone Knows 9.All at Sea 8.Who Do You Want For Your Love? 7.I Can't See My Feelings 6.Black Velvet Stallion 5.Napoleon Bona Part 1 & 2 4.Zoom Club 3.Parents 2.I turned to Stone 1.Young is a World
I discovered Budgie a couple of months ago. I don't understand why and how I missed them in the 70s and 80s. My favourite track is Panzer Division Destroyed.
Hi Pete, yes great band, saw them many times here in the UK, the first five or so probably their best albums, and those song titles, man, very underrated too, take care man, rock on.
Just came up from the Budgie rabbit hole, everything you said about them is 100% dead on. So underrated especially for a band that influenced the sound itself. i am a huge fan of budgie, maybe my favorite rock bands all time. Breadfan is my favorite at the moment. Just so many amazing tracks, a few on your list i need to give a listen. Great content from someone who listen to them. I grew up with rock, thought i new a lot of the hidden gems,🤣. I learned of them till 2 days ago. Still can't understand like you how they were not more famous. On influence alone they should be in the HOF.✌
It’s impossible for me not to start tapping my foot when I hear Whisky River. Killer bass line inter-weaving with a great groove from the drummer with a nice mid tempo double bass pattern and …cowbell!
1. Slipaway 2. All At Sea 3. Don't Go Away 4. Heaven Knows Your Name 5. Hammer and Tongs 6. Parents 7. Young Is A World 8. The Author 9. You're Opening Doors 10. Running to my Soul I love BUDGIE....!!!!!!!!
My 1st ever Album was Budgies First , recorded in 1971. I used to play squawk among others whilst reading the Lord of the rings Was sad to hear of Burke Shelley’s passing on 10/01/22. Rip you made your mark.
Another brilliant top 10 Pete, keep them rolling. Anyway, here's mine 1. Zoom Club 2. Parents 3. Homicidal Suicidal 4. Breaking All the House Rules 5. Black Velvet Stallion 6. Pyramids 7. Napoleon Bona Part 1 & 2 8. In the Grip of the Tyrefitter's Hand 9. Nude Disintegrating Parachute Woman 10. A Crash Course in Brain Surgery That's just skimming the surface really, there's dozens of other nuggets. Two things Pete - have you ever been to their homeland of Wales? It's a magical, mountainous country, beloved by Page and Plant. Also, any chance of a Little Feat top ten? I'm not sure how much you rate them but I know Burke Shelley is a big fan. Keep up the excellent work.
Budgie, like Wishbone Ash, a band I dig but I'm not well versed enough in their catalog to pick a top 10. Going to go and listen to what have, though. I still gotta get my Top 10 Triumph in.....
This as given me immense pleasure. I love Budgie’s music and just had to get my collection out to select my top 10.... Almost impossible and like you, Pete, my selections might change daily based on that days feelings. So here’s my top 10. 10 Secrets in My Head 9. Young is a World 8. I Can’t See My Feelings 7. In The Grip Of A Tyre-fitters Hand 6. In For The Kill 5. Don’t Dilute The Water 4. Parents 3. I Turned To Stone 2. Gunslinger 1. Napoleon Bona pt 1 & 2 Bubbling under Power Supply, Panzer Division Destroyed, Heaven Knows Your Name, Zoom Club, Black Velvet Stallion, Smile Boy Smile, Stranded, I’m Compressing The Comb on A Cockerels Head....and many more.
Like a lot of folks in my Gen X age group, I discovered Budgie through Metallica. Burke Shelley is a seriously underrated bassist. Squawk is my favorite album, but I do have some love for Nightflight. It has an early Derek Riggs cover and I enjoy hearing Keeping A Rendezvous. They really are underrated here in the States and should have made it a lot bigger.
Good to see see this band get some more recognition! Found Squawk on Kapp records in a 25 cent bin, in 1973 when 3 finger lids cost $10... (the Roger Dean SR-71 w/ the bird skull fuselage is still my favorite Budgie album cover). Got a lot of mileage off of that sucker and maybe can't view their catalog w/ much objectivity as a result. Haven't heard much after Bandolier, but here goes anyway in no particular order: -Guts -Stranded -Hot As A Docker's Armpit -Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman -Parents -Napoleon Bona (Parts 1 & 2) -In The Grip of a Tyrefitter's Hand -In For The Kill -Rape of The Locks -Breadfan I know this is broken record territory, but i'm hoping you'll throw some light on Patto and or Sir Lord Baltimore! (that 1st SLB has to be one of the most ferociously unhinged rock albums ever made).
My introduction to Budgie was seeing them open for Gillan in 1981 when I was 12. They were supporting their Nightlife album which I purchased first chance I had. Still love it to this day...was disappointed you don't care for it as much-no mention of Turn To Stone? But yeah, I eventually got around to buying their earlier offerings as well. How they didn't become massive is a mystery. Great band who I always advise people to look into.
Online a few weeks ago, I purchased “The Definitive Anthology: An Ecstasy Of Fumbling” by Budgie. I listened to the double Compact Disc anthology through headphones and this is a great CD. It features songs from 1971 to 1982 plus a 1988 unreleased song by Burke Shelley and two live songs. I am not big on compilations. However, this is a way to go with Budgie.
For anyone out there that likes reading there are two excellent books by a writer from NewZealand called Chris Pike called "Budgie's First Three Albums" and "In Pecking Order: Budgie 1974-79." They go into incredible detail and he speaks at crazy length with Ray Phillps, Pete Boot and Steve Williams, as well as Tony, Burke, Myf Isaacs and a few others that were part of their story.
Budgie top 10 1 Breaking All The House Rules 2 In For The Kill 3 Napoleon Bonapart 1&2 4 Young Is A World 5 parents 6 Sky High Percentage 7 Breadfan 8 Hammer and Tongs 9 Zoom Club 10 Homicidal Suicidal
Once again a hard rockin' band that got lost to the power groups of the time. I only had Never Turn Your Back on Your Friend and Bandolier. But I can listen to some of their earlier material on UA-cam! #1 Napolean Bona Part 1&2! Burke's bass line and vocals are great on this and Tony does have some sizzling riffs. Thanks for posting.
Would love to see you do an hour long show on Budgie and do a run down of all their albums from first to last. Just to give people a little history of this great underrated band. Pete, I really dig your show you seem to be a pretty cool dude and you listen to the same music as I. Keeps everything interesting to me. But yeah man, do a complete Budgie show if you can fit it into your schedule. Would be cool as f...!
Pete, you are the man! I like Budgies first 4 / 5 LPs very, very much. Really greatest tunes are all tracks of the first two Lps and napoleon Bonaparte, hammer and tongs, bredfan, breaking all the houses rule and in my opinion their greatest track Zoom Club! But there much more, sadly I forgot their names..
Back in 1980 or thereabouts Budgie issued an EP ( there was a revival around that time) If Swallowed Do Not Induce Vomiting was the EP's title and it includes a favourite of mine 'Panzer Division Destroyed' , belting track and looks as though it was included in reissues of the next album. Caught them on your that year in Manchester at a rock club named Jilly's. Not the original guitarist though ( think they had three throughout their career). There's a tribute band here in the northwest of England called Bandoliers who play tremendous renditions of all the great Budgie tunes and also go out as Black Zeppelin ( set of Zep classics followed by ...you guessed it!) Amazing musicians!
Okay, Pete, I'm going to educate myself on the world of Budgie. I'm going to purchase the MCA Albums '73-'75. If my wife gets mad at me, I'm sending her to SOT!
Budgie's a bloody brilliant band! So underrated, love them to absolute death. One of the heavy metal pioneers! Really showed how metal came from blues.
Been a Budgie fan for decades.Tons of great songs to pick from. Not a bad top 10.For me,Napolean Bona Parte 1 + 2 would be in the top 3.Parents probably would make it in top 10 and also Melt the Ice Away. Can't argue with those classics like Guts ,Stranded,Zoom Club or the more known Breadfan or In for the Kill.Yep,criminally underrated heavy band.Great to see you do their top 10.
BUDGIE - in the future when we are all gone, if the earth is not totally destroyed. There will be a massive amazing study done on the Music of Budgie, and the whole point will be besides how great their Music is- also the mystery how so many people in this day and age, just totally missed it. One of top favorite bands of course. Too many great tunes to pick from. Also best album art as a complete collection.
Hi Pete great video i love Budige my Fav song is Smile boy Smile from impecable and i love your shirt hard to find here in Australia but i am holiidaying in the USA next year maybe i might find one there at Amoeba keep rockin man

8. In the Grip of the Tyrefitter's Hand
9. Nude Disintegrating Parachute Woman
10. A Crash Course in Brain Surgery
That's just skimming the surface really, there's dozens of other nuggets.
Great Band 😎👊
RIP John "Burke" Shelley 1950-2022, I still can't believe he is no longer with us.
Budgie, like Wishbone Ash, a band I dig but I'm not well versed enough in their catalog to pick a top 10. Going to go and listen to what have, though.
I still gotta get my Top 10 Triumph in.....
Czekałem na to
I've waited for it. One of the best heavy metal groups.
This as given me immense pleasure. I love Budgie’s music and just had to get my collection out to select my top 10.... Almost impossible and like you, Pete, my selections might change daily based on that days feelings. So here’s my top 10.
10 Secrets in My Head
9. Young is a World
8. I Can’t See My Feelings
7. In The Grip Of A Tyre-fitters Hand
6. In For The Kill
5. Don’t Dilute The Water
4. Parents
3. I Turned To Stone
2. Gunslinger
1. Napoleon Bona pt 1 & 2
Bubbling under Power Supply, Panzer Division Destroyed, Heaven Knows Your Name, Zoom Club, Black Velvet Stallion, Smile Boy Smile, Stranded, I’m Compressing The Comb on A Cockerels Head....and many more.
Great Budgie “Top Ten Songs...”. I just ordered a used Budgie anthology Compact Disc.
Haven't heard much after Bandolier, but here goes anyway in no particular order:
-Guts
-Stranded
-Hot As A Docker's Armpit
-Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman
-Parents
-Napoleon Bona (Parts 1 & 2)
-In The Grip of a Tyrefitter's Hand
-In For The Kill
-Rape of The Locks
-Breadfan
I know this is broken record territory, but i'm hoping you'll throw some light on Patto and or Sir Lord Baltimore! (that 1st SLB has to be one of the most ferociously unhinged rock albums ever made).
In about 1979, I found “Bandolier” and “Impeckable” in two different cutout bins in two different stores for around $1 each.
I also saw them on that tour supporting Gillan. Awesome.
Where did you find that? It's always a lot of money on eBay...
@@jimdavis8391 I do not remember where I found it online maybe Discogs from maybe a Japanese seller. I just went and paid top dollar for it.
Budgie top 10
1 Breaking All The House Rules
2 In For The Kill
3 Napoleon Bonapart 1&2
4 Young Is A World
5 parents
6 Sky High Percentage
7 Breadfan
8 Hammer and Tongs

10 Homicidal Suicidal
Hammer and Tongs!
I guess you never heard hellbender from power supply.
1) All At Sea
1.Parents 2.You're the biggest thing since powdered milk 3.Nepoleon Bonapart 1-2 4.Zoom Club 5.Bredfan
I absolutely love turned to stone and parents! All budgie tracks are awesome though 👍🏼
Great list Pete!!
"Panzer Division Destroyed" is on my top list from Budgie
Why aren't all their albums available on itunes
0:58 love how he mentioned that 😂
Would love to see you do an hour long show on Budgie and do a run down of all their albums from first to last. Just to give people a little history of this great underrated band. Pete, I really dig your show you seem to be a pretty cool dude and you listen to the same music as I. Keeps everything interesting to me. But yeah man, do a complete Budgie show if you can fit it into your schedule. Would be cool as f...!
I just might Udo, I just might!
Nice.
Good list, a lot of my favourites are in your honourable mentions but this is a band where almost anything of theirs could be in the top 10.
Good tune Julian! Forgot about that one!
Black Velvet Stallion has been stuck in my head for like 45 years now.
I really like Bored with Russia, very catchy.
Hmmmm. Not near the list I would select... but will still check it out.
Okay, Pete, I'm going to educate myself on the world of Budgie. I'm going to purchase the MCA Albums '73-'75. If my wife gets mad at me, I'm sending her to SOT!
please Pete do a vid on the late great Midnight from Crimson Glory!?
where can I get your shirt??
surprised Parents wasn't on the top 10 list
Budgie's a bloody brilliant band! So underrated, love them to absolute death. One of the heavy metal pioneers! Really showed how metal came from blues.
Of course it's hard to make a Budgie top 10.
They are too good.
😉
In for the kill live in the mid 70's wasamazing; it was 3 times as powerful live
