Yuuuuup! Way back when, I fell asleep listening to that album and hadn’t heard that one yet. In my dream, it was the soundtrack to the sleeping visuals and I remember thinking in the dream, “That is such a lush, beautiful and haunting melody.” I didn’t realize it was DT but the next day when I listened to the whole album and this song came on, I was stoked!it was real! It wasn’t just a dream, it was Dream Theater! I was very happy it existed and instantly became one of my favorite songs of all time. Sorry for going on here and not that anyone cares but that was a wonderful moment of discovery for me. Again, sorry for going on so long, I’ll never be open again.

"Pull Me Under" definitely deserves an honorable mention - for most of us, that was the song that introduced us to DT. I don't do it very often, but I still give Images & Words a spin now and then. Probably should check out some of their stuff with Mangini on drums - I actually haven't bought a new Dream Theater disc since Black Clouds and Silver Linings.

I don’t know, they still have many years ahead of them, and they don’t seem to be slowing down soon! I absolutely loved the first 2 albums with Mangini, as well as The Astonishing (I respect that album so much because it seemed like something they really wanted to do and they put a lot of passion into it). However, other than some songs off of the second half of Distance over Time, I wasn’t a huge fan of that one. But it was still amazing! Can’t wait for the many albums they will hopefully be releasing in the future!!!
Wow wasn't expecting this! Dream Theater is my all time favorite band, I was surprised to find out that your list was quite similar to mine! Let's try to put out mine... 10)Illumination Theory... Amazing, some of my favorite riffs, solos and vocals by the band. 9)In the Name of God... Love it, has everything I like about DT: Headbang, Astonishing vocals, melodies and arrangements 8)Under a Glass Moon Love the chorus, love the solo. The Glass Prison is the most fun thing I've ever listened to, riffs and solos from another planet, while LTL is one of the few pieces of music able to make me cry. 2)Finally Free... Soooo epic. That final Portnoy solo and outro riff is my favorite outro to an album ever. 1)A Change of Seasons It simply has anything I'm looking for when listening to music. My all time favorite song for sure!
My list in no order, Stream of Consciousness, Metropolis Pt1, Home, Status Seeker, Caught In A Web, Octavarium, As I Am, Under A Glass Moon, Space Dye Vest and The Glass Prison.
I think that Under a Glass Moon was actually one of DT's most influential tunes. I think I have heard an "echo" of that riff in several other prog metal bands.
In The Name of God! you totally destroyed me saying this! This is my top 2 best songs ever of DT! love your YT channel. When you talks about top 3 songs i always get chills on my back : P greetings man!
My Top 10: (I had Trouble putting Awake in My List as well) 10 - The Dark Eternal Night (Systematic Chaos) 9 - The Enemy Inside (Dream Theater) 8 - Pull Me Under (Images and Words) 7 - A Change of Seasons 6 - Strange Deja Vu (Metropolis Part 2) 5 - Learning to Live (Images and Words) 4 - New Millennium (Falling into Infinity) 3 - A Fortune in Lies (When Dream and Day Unite) 2 - Surrounded (Images and Words) 1 - Metropolis Part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper (Images and Words) Honorable Mentions! Paralyzed (Distance over Time)
Dream Theater...been a fan for years; they, secondary to Rush, were my introduction to the illustrious world of progressive rock. This list may include some cheats, depending on how you look at it, and I can't rank any of these, but, collectively, can be considered my rough top 10: -A Nightmare to Remember -Innocence Faded -Surrounded -Fatal Tragedy -A Mind Beside Itself trilogy (Erotomania/Voices/The Silent Man) -The Dance of Eternity -Take The Time -Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence title suite -6:00 -This Dying Soul I am with you 100% on your assessment of the post-Portnoy albums, minus the very last one, as I don't own it. ADToE had some good songs, but kinda left me cold, but I feel like they got a real fresh shot in the arm on the following s/t album. So underrated. The Astonishing. Oh boy, this one is painful. I listen to so much stuff, love lots of long, extended pieces, long, ambitious double albums, and I can't recall complaining about things being too excessive, even in the case of DT, simply because it's all memorable. That streak came to an end here. This was an album that could have used some judicious editing (to say the least); an outside producer to tell the guys to trim back much of the boring, extraneous, and forgettable fat that plagued the album, if there was no chance in shaping it up into something memorable. I really only remember 4 or 5 tunes from the album (A New Beginning being the absolute best of them) to this day. I saw them perform this album in it's entirety at the Radio City Music Hall shortly after it's release. I was fighting off sleep during certain moments...so much so that I didn't even recognize a fight that had apparently broke out in the audience the very night I was there. Needless to say, in my album rankings, The Astonishing would rank at the very bottom. Can't wait to see you do an album ranking on these guys.
Happy Birthday! Looking forward to more top tens! I respect DT but haven't really got into them other than Images and Words. I don't know what it is. I think it is a timing thing because I really started to get into Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd in 90's and 2000's and that satiated me instead of getting into DT.
1. Home 2. Lines in the sand 3. The glass prison 4. Learning to live 5. The great debate 6. Trial of tears 7. Pull me under 8. A change of seasons 9. New milennium 10. Fatal tragedy
Happy birthday Pete!! Wow Way too tough to pick 10 for me. I love this amazing bands catalogue. I prefer the Portnoy era, although Mangini is a great drummer. Astonishing did nothing for me, I do like distance over time, but not as much as the older stuff. Great video 🤘🎶🍺🔥
Really tough Pete, my top 1 will always be my favourite tune by any band but the other 9 tunes might switch with others from time to time, 10/ Surrounded 9/Bridges in the sky 8/ Six degrees of inner turbulence 7/ Sacrificed sons 6/ Endless sacrifice 5/ Home 4/ breaking all illusions 3/The glass prison 2/ At wits End 1/ The count of Tuscany 👍🏻🤘🏻
Hey Pete, I dig your list. I'm a huge DT fan. I've seen them 16 times in concert. This was an extremely challenging exercise. Not only because of the catalogue, but they have so many lengthy epics as well. Here's mine: 1. Metropolis, Pt. 1 (Always been my favorite. The instrumental section in the middle was and is mind-bending) 2.Take the Time 3. Endless Sacrifice 4. Breaking All Illusions (My favorite, post Portnoy) 5. Overture: 1928 6. Another Day 7. Innocence Faded 8. Blind Faith 9. Under A Glass Moon 10. About to Crash

I could not agree more about LaBrie! I love his voice, think he is perfect for DT and would love to hear WDaDU re-recorded with him on vocals. This is my favorite band, and I don’t think I could do a 10 favorite songs. Blind Faith would be on there, for sure though.
1- Octavarium 2- Vacant + Stream Of Consciousness 3- In The Presence of Enemies (pt.1-2) 4- In The Name Of God 5- Metropolis pt.1: The Miracle and The Sleeper 6- Space-Dye Vest 7- Panic Attack 8- The Ministry Of Lost Souls 9- Erotomania 10- The Dance of Eternity PS: Untethered Angel almost got into my list, it's in fact the 11th favorite song of mine from DT.
The entire Images album is an emotional freight train. There might be better stuff live but Images was always a great listen-at-home record. And an honorable mention should go to When Dream and Day Unite. Charlie sang perfectly for that period of DT history.
Very glad to see some love for "In the Name of God", it's a song that few seem to talk about when listing their favorite DT songs but it's one of my all time favorites. The outro to the song is especially powerful.
What a band! This was a hard list to create, everything from them is pure quality. Here's my opinion! 10. Panic Attack 9. On The Backs Of Angels 8. Pull Me Under 7. A Change Of Seasons 6. Scene Seven I. The Dance Of Eternity 5. Metropolis - Part 1: "The Miracle And The Sleeper" 4. Illumination Theory 3. The Count Of Tuscany 2. Hey Pete very good list, you mentioned all the great things Portnoy is doing out of DT, how about a top 10 non DT Portnoy songs like to include his material from Neil Morse, Winery dogs, Sons of Apollo etc. I agree it would be disappointing to see him not continue with all them but it would be great to see him do 1 more album with DT. Unfortunately Labrie has blocked his return for now...
For me its: 10.octaverium 9.lie 8.in the name of god 7.build me up break me down 6.metropolis pt.1 5.the dance of eternity 4. As i am 3.finally free 2.on the backs of angels 1.panic attack If ill write honourable mentions itll break the internet ceause i just love to many songs by this band🤘
If you just picked all songs from Scenes from a Memory to fill your top ten, you'd have to decide which two to leave off! This is one album that I *always* listen to from start to finish, and my favorite DT album.
1. Glass Prison 2. Take The Time 3. The Count Of Tuscany 4. The Root Of All Evil 5. Barstool Warrior 6. Peruvian Skies 7. Constant Motion 8. Under A Glass Moon 9. This Dying Soul 10. Space Dye Vest
10 Count of Tuscany 9 The Killing Hand(Live at the Marquee 1993) 8 The Glass Prison 7 Learning to Live 6 Home 5 Stream of Consciousness 4 Scarred 3 Octavarium 2 Metropolis Part 1 1 Change of Seasons
@@martyndunn6337 That is definitely a widely held belief by many fans. Mangini is machine like, not a lot of soul. But I don't like Portnoy's sound on Images and Words.
Not only MP was a more human drummer, he also was the brain (that gave DT the direction) and the soul (his visible passion) of DT. Just compare the latest DT-albums to esoecially those till Awake. All emotions and most melodies are gone. Instead we got some shredding-stuff, too technical and cold...
@@lifeisajourney5789 All emotions gone?! Breaking All Illusions, At Wits End, Fall into the Light, Illumination Theory just off the top of my head have plenty of melody and emotion. Conversely you could accuse songs like The Dance of Eternity (which I love) of being too technical and cold. Mike leaving DT was the best for both parties in the end imo. Ive enjoyed the recent music a lot more than for example Black Clouds and Systematic Chaos. Using your marker of Awake (their 3rd album) you could say that Kevin Moore leaving was the reason for the decline in melody and emotion rather than Portnoy as there were 7 "Portnoy" studio albums after that!
10.Scene Six: Home 9.Scene Two: I & II. Overture 1928/Strange Deja Vu 8.Another Day 7.These Walls 6.As I Am 5.Endless Sacrifice 4.This Dying Soul 3.Metropolis, Pt. 1: The Miracle and The Sleeper 2.Honor Thy Father 1.The Count Of Tuscany

Bit late but here we go: 1. Learning to Live 2. In the Presence of Enemies (as one) 3. The Count of Tuscany 4. Home 5. Metropolis 6. Scene Two: Overture 1928 + Strange Dejavu 7. A Change of Seasons 8. Under a Glass Moon 9. Octavarium 10. Hell´s Kitchen
Great band. With the career and body of work it depends on the day. Good observation on the split with Portnoy. Best wishes to all involved. If I grabbed 10 songs today, in on particular order. The Enemy Inside, The Looking Glass, Only a Matter of Time, Constant Motion, The Test that Stumped Them All, Misunderstood, Panic Attack, The Spirit Carries On, Withered, Change of Seasons.
I can't rank them without some meditation so to just throw an orderless top 10 here: Blind Faith Take The Time Lines In The Sand A Change of Seasons Learning to Live Metropolis Spirit Carries On Fatal Tragedy Scarred In The Presence of Enemies Part 1
Some really good non-album tracks are To Live Forever from the Lie cd single, and several songs from the 1999 International Fan Club cd including, Don't Look Past Me, Raise The Knife, Where Are You Now, The Way It Used To Be, Cover My Eyes & Speak To Me. Worth checking out if you get the chance.
Pete listening to you talk about Dream Theater makes me wonder now if you're top 30 bands list has changed and if they've moved up from #8. It almost seems to me they've had to have moved perhaps to #6. Not quite Rainbow at 5 but just outside? Has your top 30 changed at all you think? Great stuff. Thank you.
It’s hard for me to pick my 10 favs as they are my favorite band and there are so many great songs from the entire catalog. A Change of Seasons is my favorite song, but after that so much is up for consideration.
Here's my top 10 up before I watch this. It's changed five times already during the typing of this post. If I'm being completely honest, 7 & 8 are probably 1 & 2 for me but, I keep tweaking the list. 10) Home 09) Blind Faith 08) Misunderstood 07) Space Dye Vest 06) 6:00 05) The Glass Prison 04) Wait For Sleep/Learning To Live 03) Pull Me Under 02) Lie 01) Metropolis Pt. 1
You hit on four of mine! Nice list. I have to admit that while I do like Metropolis pt. 2, it's not a masterpiece for me. I wore that thing out when I got it but, as I remember it, I was really into Fates Warning's A Pleasant Shade of Gray and I felt that Metrop 2 wasn't quite as good. APSOG came out in 1997 and Still Life (live) came out in 1998 so, I was still heavy into that album when Metrop 2 came out. APOSOG is my favorite concept album of all-time. Desert island disc material for me.
In the name of god is sooo good. I was not expecting my favorite to be your favorite too! I love it so much. Train of Thought in general is super good, probably my favorite album. Also, I agree that home is super good.
There are a handful of DT albums I haven't listened to much since I became a fan this year, but here's my list: 10. Panic Attack 09. As I Am 08. The Mirror / Lie 07. Home 06. Endless Sacrifice 05. Overture 1928 / Strange Deja Vu 04. Metropolis Pt. 1 03. In the Name of God 02. A Change of Seasons 01. Under a Glass Moon
The Dance of Eternity basically just takes bits and pieces of Metropolis pt. 1 and arranges them in more complex time signatures. It's interesting as an techincal achievement but I think the original song is a better composition in every way. My own three favorites are Lines in the Sand (the only DT track that really has a groove), Space-Dye Vest (the only DT ballad that isn't cheesy. Well you could count Disappear too, it's a great track but the Radiohead influence is a bit too pronounced) and Metropolis pt 1 (the track that I heard first from the band). Never quite got the love for Scenes from a Memory, it's filled with melodies from part 1 and I just for some reason never liked the idea of taking cues from older tracks.

The Dark Eternal Night & As I Am are my two favorite Dream Theater songs probably because of the killer guitar solos on both.

It simply has anything I'm looking for when listening to music. My all time favorite song for sure!
Happy birthday Pete!!!!
Thank you for doing a Top Ten on Dream Theater ! This band really rocks! I love your Dream Theater shirt! Keep rockin!🎸🎤🎵🥁
Happy birthday Pete! Been waiting for this one. 🤘
Great list. Hoping for album ranking soon!!
Happy birthday Pete. Great list by the way. ;)
Thanks good video, love this band and last album phenomenal
Great video! DT is one of my favorite bands of all time! Thanks for doing this.
My list in no order, Stream of Consciousness, Metropolis Pt1, Home, Status Seeker, Caught In A Web, Octavarium, As I Am, Under A Glass Moon, Space Dye Vest and The Glass Prison.
First Happy Birthday! And how difficult that must have been! Great choices!
Dante
Hi Pete! This is a great video with some great song choices. Must admit- kinda hoping youll do a ranking video on their albums.
Happy Birthday Pete, another year older another year wiser so they say.
line in the sand ..excellent doug pinnick on backup vocals
omg! i've never clicked so quick! DT my best band ever!

Dream Theater...been a fan for years; they, secondary to Rush, were my introduction to the illustrious world of progressive rock. This list may include some cheats, depending on how you look at it, and I can't rank any of these, but, collectively, can be considered my rough top 10:
-A Nightmare to Remember
-Innocence Faded
-Surrounded
-Fatal Tragedy
-A Mind Beside Itself trilogy
(Erotomania/Voices/The Silent Man)
-The Dance of Eternity
-Take The Time
-Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence title suite
-6:00
-This Dying Soul
I am with you 100% on your assessment of the post-Portnoy albums, minus the very last one, as I don't own it.

Happy/ HEALTHY birthday PETE!
Happy birthday Pete!!
Wow
Way too tough to pick 10 for me.
My top 3:
3. Metropolis Pt.1
2. Home
1. In The Name Of God
Hey Pete, I dig your list. I'm a huge DT fan. I've seen them 16 times in concert. This was an extremely challenging exercise. Not only because of the catalogue, but they have so many lengthy epics as well. Here's mine:
1. Metropolis, Pt. 1 (Always been my favorite. The instrumental section in the middle was and is mind-bending)
2.Take the Time
3. Endless Sacrifice
4. Breaking All Illusions (My favorite, post Portnoy)
5. Overture: 1928
6. Another Day
7. Innocence Faded

Solitary Shell is such an underrated song off Six Degrees. Also, Raise the Knife off of 20th anniversary live is another underrated one
I love Train Of Thought. Honor Thy Father is probably my favorite on the album. Also, nice to see some love for Lines In The Sand👌🏻
Happy Birthday one Capricorn to another. Really appreciate all the great bands that I’ve been introduced to thanks to Sea of Tranquility. Amazon was here today with Amorphis and Diamond Head discs. Have a great day!

Masterclass in music.
I could not agree more about LaBrie! I love his voice, think he is perfect for DT and would love to hear WDaDU re-recorded with him on vocals. This is my favorite band, and I don’t think I could do a 10 favorite songs. Blind Faith would be on there, for sure though.
Thanks for the video...Dream Theater is a killer band...

PS: Untethered Angel almost got into my list, it's in fact the 11th favorite song of mine from DT.
Vacant and SoC is so fucking sood
Good
The entire Images album is an emotional freight train.
Best Album for me is Train of Thought because it's killer from start to finish, but best Song for me is the Count of Tuscany.
What a band! This was a hard list to create, everything from them is pure quality. Here's my opinion!
10. Panic Attack
9. On The Backs Of Angels

10 The Spirit Carries On
Pete, I’m thinking of getting into Dream Theatre... what album do you recommend for me to start with? Many thanks.
Ya baby, my favorite band!
For me its:
10.octaverium
9.lie
8.in the name of god
7.build me up break me down
6.metropolis pt.1
5.the dance of eternity
4. As i am
3.finally free
2.on the backs of angels
1.panic attack
If ill write honourable mentions itll break the internet ceause i just love to many songs by this band🤘
Impossible task but, a nice list Pete.
If you just picked all songs from Scenes from a Memory to fill your top ten, you'd have to decide which two to leave off!
This is one album that I *always* listen to from start to finish, and my favorite DT album.
1. Glass Prison
2. Take The Time
3. The Count Of Tuscany
4. The Root Of All Evil
5. Barstool Warrior
6. Peruvian Skies
7. Constant Motion
8. Under A Glass Moon
9. This Dying Soul
10. Space Dye Vest
Been a fan since '92.....nearly impossible for me to pick a top 10, but the top three is easy:
3) The Mirror
2) Best Of Times
1) Count Of Tuscany
10 Count of Tuscany
9 The Killing Hand(Live at the Marquee 1993)
8 The Glass Prison
7 Learning to Live
6 Home
5 Stream of Consciousness
4 Scarred
3 Octavarium
2 Metropolis Part 1
1 Change of Seasons
Were you at the Live Scenes from NY show in 2000? That dvd is amazing. Always wish I could’ve experienced that but I was just born at the time haha
portnoy to me was more of a natural than mangini
Chuckie Drums they lost a huge part of the DT vibe and soul when Portnoy departed, although Magini is an incredible drummer.
@@martyndunn6337 That is definitely a widely held belief by many fans. Mangini is machine like, not a lot of soul. But I don't like Portnoy's sound on Images and Words.
Not just a drummer, but a songwriter and strong character[but IS a top class percussionist].

9.)Pannic attack
10) Another Day
They wanted to include "A change of Seasons" on Images, as a double album, but the record company wouldn't allow it.
Bit late but here we go:
1. Learning to Live
2. In the Presence of Enemies (as one)
3. The Count of Tuscany
4. Home
5. Metropolis
6. Scene Two: Overture 1928 + Strange Dejavu
7. A Change of Seasons
8. Under a Glass Moon
9. Octavarium
10. Hell´s Kitchen
Great band. With the career and body of work it depends on the day. Good observation on the split with Portnoy. Best wishes to all involved. If I grabbed 10 songs today, in on particular order. The Enemy Inside, The Looking Glass, Only a Matter of Time, Constant Motion, The Test that Stumped Them All, Misunderstood, Panic Attack, The Spirit Carries On, Withered, Change of Seasons.
happy birthday from chuckie drums queens n.y.
I can't rank them without some meditation so to just throw an orderless top 10 here:
Blind Faith
Take The Time
Lines In The Sand
A Change of Seasons
Learning to Live
Metropolis
Spirit Carries On
Fatal Tragedy
Scarred
In The Presence of Enemies Part 1
Pete they redid the first album with James on vocals !
Fan club release only? I've never seen it.
Sea of Tranquility Here you go:
www.discogs.com/Dream-Theater-Official-Bootleg-When-Dream-And-Day-Reunite/release/1395635
Your number 1!! Yes Yes Yes!!! I thought I was the only one!!!
Thank you.
Nope.
10) Home
09) Blind Faith
08) Misunderstood
07) Space Dye Vest
06) 6:00
05) The Glass Prison
04) Wait For Sleep/Learning To Live
03) Pull Me Under
02) Lie
01) Metropolis Pt.
Love to see Blind Faith represented!
In the name of god is sooo good. I was not expecting my favorite to be your favorite too! I love it so much. Train of Thought in general is super good, probably my favorite album. Also, I agree that home is super good.
There are a handful of DT albums I haven't listened to much since I became a fan this year, but here's my list:
10. Panic Attack
09. As I Am
08. The Mirror / Lie
07. Home
06. Endless Sacrifice
05. Overture 1928 / Strange Deja Vu
04. Metropolis Pt. 1
03. In the Name of God
02. A Change of Seasons
