Like you Pete,my two favorite bands are Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. When I heard the debut album in '72,it changed my life.I would have to include the song Black Sabbath in my top 10 before any Dio song. Also,War Pigs would have to be in my top 10,again before any Dio song. You have some great ones in your top 10 though and the honorable mentions covered pretty much all the great ones. You Won't Change Me and Junior's Eyes would make my honorable mentions. Keep em coming. Enjoying these top 10's!
Tough one to narrow to 10, but at this moment, this is from my gut: 10- Warning. Although its part of a medley, by itself I love how it points to Sab's roots in 60's heavy blues, in the vein of Cream or early Zep, only... heavier, considerably heavier. Yet cleaner and more musical than Blue Cheer. 9- Junior's Eyes. You don't love much off NSD, me neither I guess, but that makes this one a big standout for me. Much lighter (though it seriously rocks..and is funky in parts) than the early 70s stuff, but great composition. I think it was a radio hit that never was. Shoulda been on the air on rock radio with contemporary songs by Nugent, BOC, Thin Lizzy, etc. 8- Supernaut- Killer. Bill Ward! 7- N.I.B.- This is the riff I find myself playing the most on guitar, sometimes absent mindedly. What cool lyrics too (love the Buddy Holly "not fade away" nod in the chorus of a song sung from the perspective of the devil!) 6- Lord of this World- More devil stuff. Kind of the prototype doom Sabbath song for me, all the classic Sab touches. Master of Reality is my fave album. Crushingly heavy.... in 1971! 5- Symptom of the Universe- That riff! 4- Hand of Doom- Like 3 great hard rock songs in one! 3- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath- The first riff was awesome enough, not to mention the DOOMY vibe, but then the riff accompanying the "where can you run to?" part... and Ozzy's awesome vocals! 2- Children of the Grave- Galloping, crushing tune... about peace and love, lol. 1- Into the Void- The first 2 albums of theirs that I had, both on cassette, were paranoid and greatest hits, and these were enough to set me on the path to lifelong fandom. So that's the stuff I knew when I heard this for the first time. I'll never forget that. It was actually on the radio (Seton Hall Pirate Radio). I was stunned, it turned things up a couple notches. An amazing song, so heavy, and such cool vibes. Fave Dio song: Children of the Sea. Also really dig Born Again, though no top 10 contenders.
That acoustic piece that wraps up Symptom is just amazing, one of the best things Tony has ever played. You are sledgehammered for 3 or 4 minutes by that killer riff, then the "blastoff" and into a real nice interlude. It's like a giant rainstorm, it stops suddenly, the clouds are gone, the air is clear and the sun is out and life is good again.
@@JohnSmith-mx8wp They were SO dynamic. You’re comment inspired me to put “symptom” on (and I happen to be stoned). Wow. The different sections and passages are like some good classical music… but rock… heavy heavy rock. A little jazzy just there too.

Excellent list! Making a top 10 for Sabbath songs is no easy task, but for each song that you listed, one to ten, I found myself saying "Oh yes! Perfect song!".
It is really interesting to hear peoples favorite songs and albums from three different perspectives. The first is people like me who were starting their listening with the Beatles. The second is the group, like yourself who were kids when you joined us on our rock listening careers. Then there is the later generations who have discovered rock through their parent's collection or who were just drawn to it because the music sounds great to them. The same music unites us through our shared listening experience.

Hi Pete, I notice you did not mention Heart Like A Wheel from Seventh Star album great vocal from Glen Hughes and about four guitar solos from Tony Iommi, I love it. I would give it an honourable mention, It was supposed to be a solo album, record company decided to call it a Sabbath album. I'm sure you already know that.
Just gonna stick to Ozzy/Sab on my list. First off, Tony's guitar tone on Sabotage is my fav. I love Sabotage! 1. Megalomania - the full range of Sab! I was 16 and painting my Uncle's house in Bend, OR. I got the Sabotage CD and it was the soundtrack for that hot hot week on a ladder. 2. A National Acrobat 3. Symptom of the Universe - the full range of Sab pt. 2! 4. Supernaut 5. Junior's Eyes - I adore this song! The chorus is so haunting. Ton'y wah pedal in the verse is so cool. 6. Under the Sun - Yes! Doom! This song is so great. 7. Children of the Grave - I was 16. It was 1997. A shitty era in music. My buddy put this song on. My eyes went wide. I was all in! 8. Fairies Wear Boots 9. Into the Void 10. Dirty Women - I got into this song off their Reunion Live album. I saw them on that tour and this song rocked!
Been getting way into Black Sabbath recently. They’ve been in my top 10 favorite bands since I first got into music but I’ve really been enjoying their stuff more than usual lately. Lady Evil 5. Sweet Leaf 4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 3. Heaven and Hell 2. Fairies Wear Boots 1. Great review!!! I like all Lps from the classic lineup & the dio and gillan Lps! Sabbath belong to the first wave of hard and heavy groups from the early and mid 70s like Deep purple, led zeppelin, Nazareth, Budgie, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Rainbow etc
Hey Pete my Top 5, 1.Lonely is the word, 2.Children of the Sea, 3.Heart Like a Wheel, 4.Fairies wear boots, 5.Over & Over! My personal opinion, but I get sick of Ozzy's voice sometimes, but I can't get sick of Dio! 👍Great video
Spiral Architect, Under The Sun, Slipping Away, Johnny Blade/Junior’s Eyes, Zero The Hero, Children Of The Sea, After Forever, Backstreet Kids, Country Girl, In For The Kill, my all time favorite... Symptom of The Universe
Hello Pete, love your channel. Been a Sabbath fan since 1983, I am struggling with just doing an Ozzy era list because I consider the original band the most crucial lineup. I love the 2 Dio albums from 80-81 but once Bill was out the dynamics were different. Ironically Heaven and Hell is my fav album. Go figure . So here goes in no particular order: War Pigs, Fairies Wear Boots, Black Sabbath, Wicked World, Air Dance, Who are You, Supernaut, Am I Going Insane, Hole in the Sky, Juniors Eyes.
My top 10: Is not the typical but is very hard to pick just 10 10 Hot Line ( Born Again) 9 You Wont Change me (Technical ecstasy) 8 Country Girl (Mob Rules) 7 Born To Lose (Eternal Idol) 6 Danger Zone (Seventh Star) 5 A National Acrobat (Sabbath Bloddy Sabbath) 4 Heaven And Hell ( Heaven and Hell) 3 N.I.B (Black Sabbath) 2Headless Cross (Headless Cross) 1 Neon Knights (Heaven and Hell)
My top-10 Black Sabbath list, but this could change tomorrow... :) 1. Symptom of the Universe 2. Wheels of Confusion 3. Under the Sun 4. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 5. Into the Void 6. Spiral Architect 7. Megalomania 8. Fairies Wear Boots 9. Electric Funeral 10. Dirty Women
Hi Pete-I've been listening to Your SOT spots and very enjoyable. Like You, I would have a very hard time to narrow it down to just ten. I had heard of Black Sabbath and listened to TECHNICAL ECSTASY and thought it alright, but not much more-it's better if You're acquainted with the band. At 17 in Spring of 1979, I thought that KISS, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent and Led Zeppelin were as good as Hard Rock got until I bought a two record set called HEAVY METAL with "Iron Man" being the second song. I was astounded at how heavy the song was and how lightweight it made everything else seem. I bought PARANOID a couple of weeks later and was hooked. Also, like You, I find myself gravitating towards the deep cuts, especially "Hand Of Doom". At this time, life was pretty good with some good close friends, working after school and finally a girlfriend. It all went to hell when We had to move, yet again (Military Father) and I was just thrown into this deep depression. I will maintain until my final days that Black Sabbath saved my sanity and probably my life with the first six Ozzy albums and the first Ronnie efforts
Good one! In order of production, my faves from Sabbath: The Wizard (I'd guess it's about Gandalf), War Pigs (epic!), Hand of Doom, Electric Funeral, Faeries Wear Boots (riffs and solos!), Children of the Grave, Into the Void, Tomorrow's Dream, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabbra Cadabra, Megalomania, Johnny Blade, Heaven and Hell, Neon Knights, Sign of the Southern Cross, Trashed, Disturbing the Priest. Many honorable mentions including Iron Man that I've just heard too many times. I never liked Paranoid much and never understood why it took off except that maybe it was more palatable for radio. One of the most amazing groups of all time that put out some amazing material and a LOT of it all before the mid-70s! Looking forward to Heep!

Tough one to narrow to 10, but at this moment, this is from my gut:
10- Warning.
What cool lyrics too (love the Buddy Holly "not fade away" nod in the chorus of a song sung from the perspective of the devil!)
6- Lord of this World- More devil stuff.

Favorite song by Ozzy- Wicked World, Dio- Neon Knights, Gillan- Zero The Hero, Hughes- Angry Heart & Martin- Ancient Warrior.
I have only recently discovered 'Solitude' and 'Planet Caravan' and those are two great songs IMO.
ABSOLUTELY!!! And A Bit of Finger!
Planet Caravan is very different for the band, but is one of my favourite psychedelic songs of all time!

I would give it an honourable mention, It was supposed to be a solo album, record company decided to call it a Sabbath album. I'm sure you already know that.
Yes indeed!
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Just gonna stick to Ozzy/Sab on my list.
First off, Tony's guitar tone on Sabotage is my fav. I love Sabotage!

My favorite Sabbath song is the first 60 seconds of "Thrill Of It All." And pretty much the entirety of Sabotage. And several dozen others!
My top 10: Is not the typical but is very hard to pick just 10
