And this is why I tune in. I'm not interested in a list of the usual suspects. Music is personal. I've never been a "singles" listener. I'm an album listener. As a result, I would find it difficult to put together ten songs. Thanks for sharing.
Time for me to belly up to the bar: 1. Child in Time- -this song alone should have gotten them into the Hall. 2. The Battle Rages On--Brimming with urgency and superbly crafted 3. Burn--Just kicks you in the throat and laughs at your pain 4. No One Came--Just feels good and years ahead 5. Mistreated-- Could be my number two on any given day 6. You Fool No One--A great way to capture the era 7. You Keep On Moving--Wistful, earnest, yet somber. 8. Hallelujah--A great showcase for Ian and a great transitional piece 9. Anya--Takes one to a mystical place. 10. Stormbringer--This song can never be played loud enough The list is fluid much as my moods are. Could easily hit 10 before getting to Machine Head. Or 10 after Who Do We Think We Are. Do with it what you will..
Hey Pete: because of your show I finally-at age 48!-got into DEEP PURPLE. Since the start of 2022, I have purchased 6 of their CDs and 1 DVD (the Classic Albums TV documentary for "Machine Head"; SO GOOD!). And I'm just about to use an Amazon gift card to order a few more. Such a huge discography to get familiar with!
Deep Purple Top 10 1. Burn 2, Highway Star 3. Child In Time 4. Woman From Tokyo 5. Stormbringer 6. Strange Kind Of Woman 7. You Fool No One 8. Speed King 9. Mistreated 10. Black Night Thanks for mentioning Black Night. Forgot that tune. Kick ass Blackmore solo on that song.
The Made In Japan version of Space Truckin' absolutely blew my mind the first time I heard it and it still does. To this day, it's still my very favourite Deep Purple song.
Love your channel Pete!! Really dig the top 10 lists. Purple is my favorite band. I am almost 60, and I have been following Purple since 1968. They have been an integral, important part of my life for half a century. It is so hard to whittle their discography down to 10, but here are mine: 10. Bloodsucker 9. You Fool No One 8. Rat Bat Blue 7. The Mule (one of Ritchie's best solos) 6. Speed King 5. Pictures of Home 4. Highway Star 3. Lazy 2. Burn 1. Child In Time HM's (in no particular order...) Anthem Shield April Wring That Neck Mandrake Root Hush Kentucky Woman (Jon's solo is total kick ass) Hallelujah Flight of the Rat Hard Lovin' Man Strange Kind of Woman Black Night Fireball No No No (great bass playing from Roger) Living Wreck (love the growl from Jon's Hammond) Space Truckin' Smoke on the Water Mistreated Sail Away Gypsy You Keep On Moving Rosa's Cantina Sometimes I feel Like Screaming Cascades Rapture of the Deep (my favorite Morse riff) Battle Rages On Anya Solitaire Uncommon Man Vincent Price Perfect Strangers Under the Gun Time for Bedlam Birds of Prey Fire in the Basement Overall, my favorite Purple albums: 7. Now What?! 6. Purpendicular 5. Battle Rages On 4. Fireball 3. In Rock 2. Burn 1. Machine Head What's amazing about CIT is that Ritchie was told, you have 5 minutes to put down a solo, and he comes up with that gem! Then he apologizes later that it was not better!! That's genius. As much as I like the MIJ version of CIT (totally frenetic), I really love the version from Live in Stockholm. What are your thoughts about that version? Thanks Pete!! Keep up the great work))
Killer top 10 there Pete! Here’s mine: 1. Child In Time (Made In Japan) 2. Space Truckin’ (Made In Japan) 3. Burn (Made In Europe) 4. Fireball 5. Bloodsucker 6. Shield 7. Into The Fire 8. Speed King 9. Maybe I’m A Leo 10. The Painter
I couldn't do a top 10 for Deep Purple! Too many outstanding tracks! " Child in Time", however would be my #1! When I was teenager, this song would touch my soul and heart! Growing up was tough, but this song got me through my doubts and anger! It would calm me down! It was masterpiece of music!
That song is a masterpiece! My older brother turned me onto great bands. I had just discovered Judas Priest Sad Wings and was listening to Pink Floyd & Bowie when I heard this what a time in music.
Misty Dupree off the House of Blue Light is a great song. Ritchie on the Spanish Archer is fantastic. To many great Deep Purple songs to pick. Very few bands have the volume of work that Purple has done over the decades. About all Purple's Songs could be in the top ten. Purple was just that damn excellent!!
1. April 2. Son of Alerik 3. Anthem 4. Child in Time 5. When a Blind Man Cries 6. Blind 7. Pictures of Home 8. Mistreated 9. Highway Star 10. Chasing Shadows
Excellent list. I have to list my own favorites chronologically or I'm sure to miss something: 1. "Mandrake Root" 2. "April" 3. "Child in Time" 4. "Hard Lovin' Man" 5. "Strange Kind of Woman" 6. "Pictures of Home" 7. "Burn" 8. "You Keep on Moving" 9. "Perfect Strangers" 10. "Vincent Price"
It's all good Pete.....keep up the great work.....I was originally influenced to play Drums after watching Ian Paice and telling my Parents that Elton John was on the telly!.....I saw Deep Purple at The Royal Albert Hall in 1999, Jon Lord's Hammond swirling around in Solo was just the most incredible Sonic Experience I've ever witnessed, RIP.
Sorry Pete but here is my list in reverse order 10 - Strange kind of woman 9 - Woman from Tokyo 8 - Living wreck. 7 - Fools 6 - You keep on moving. 5 - Lazy 4 - Black night 3 - Mistreated 2 - Child in time 1 - Burn. Always enjoyable , love this format, thanks Pete.
Pete...you have the best music show on you tube! I recently discovered you and am thoroughly enjoying these videos! Child in Time better be number one ☝️ lol....just kidding.
Hi Pete, waiting long time for your great list!!!! My list, but it's very hard, and perhaps it will change tomorrow again ;) 1 child in time (strongest statement of music, my all time favorite song) 2 highway star (started speed metal, great blistering track, what to say, it's Purples perfect tune) 3 black night (great, great, cool rhythm, their only no 1 single) 4 burn (amazing burner, riff, drums, soli, a fast masterpiece and a perfect opener) 5 smoke on the water (OK.. Cool riff, rhythm and singing, their signature song) 6 perfect strangers (amazing epic blistering track, a great comeback, all sayed about this one) 7 fireball (blueprint for fast songs, amazing for this time) 8 space truckin (very cool lyric, strong rhythm, drums, screaming 9 mistreated (great live sounding too, epic riffs and voice) 10 speed king (what to say, full power and diversity, the prototype of heavy metal) Memorable songs 11 to......? without ranking: Woman from tokyo (great rif, drums and soft middle part) Living wreck (great vibe, for me one of their best songs) Lazy (cool fast tune) The mule (epic drum solo, great rhythm) Hard lovin man (probably their heaviest song ever, great song parts) Hush (cool, good tune) Anya (typical great Blackmore melody) April (blueprint for rock meets classic) Second movement from concerto for group and orchestra (epic guitar and singing parts, make me cry) Chasing shadows (great mark I stuff) Strange kind of woman (strong rhythm, great lyrics) You keep on movin (wonderfull epic one) Anthem (beautiful song) Shield (very interesting one ) Fools (psychedelic hard rocking) Lady double dealer (great live) A twist in a tale (cool fast song) Fire in the basement (great Blackmore riff) Wasted sunsets (powerful sensible ballad) When a blind man cries (like above) Flight of the rat (really strong heavy song) Soldier of fortune (good Coverdale ballad, shows his greatness) Stormbringer (great opener) Fortune-teller (interesting tune, great rythm) Dead or alive (fast rocker) Mean strick (fabulous rhythm, very interesting tune) Pictures of home ( cool rythm, soli) Sometimes I feel like screaming (very great Morse track) Bird has been flown (raw purple rock) Mandrake root (live monster, epic, hard heavy, scary, wild and dangerous) Comin home (good opening track) You fool no one (live its a powerful blistering playground for Blackmore, Paice and lord) Etc etc etc etc etc etc. A list without any ending.. Forget the songs from abandon like 69, seventh Heaven, bananas and the album come taste the band with Tommy Bolin who are really strong
1. The Battle Rages On (Probably one of the most powerful riffs ever) 2. Anthem (I recognized how great this song is when I watched the German film Requiem. In one scene the lead actress Sandra Hüller dances to it and it is also in the end titles. It is a very sad film and the dancing scene is the happiest moment for her character, which makes it so memorable.) 3. Fireball 4. Burn 5. A Twist in the Tale 6. Child in Time 7. Bird Has Flown 8. Why Didn't Rosemary 9. April 10. Wring That Neck Pete, it is exactly how you say, if people want to see a list of their most successful or well-known songs, it's probably easy to find on the web, it is your personal choice we like to know :)
Great video Pete. Child In Time is my favourite like yourself. That’s why I like your lists, you cover the whole discography with the deep cuts. You don’t rattle off the greatest hits CD. Great stuff.
It's my favorite band of all time as well, Pete. There is such an underrated awesomeness to this band. I love Child in Time as well. I also like 2 songs from Mark 5, which would be Perfect Strangers but especially Knocking on your Back Door.
*Perfect Strangers* & *Knocking at Your Back Door* was the Mach II line-up. Mach V line-up was with Joe Lynn Turner replacing Ian Gillian for the *Slaves and Masters* album.
Brilliant list. And completely different from mine. It’s awesome to meet another person that hand on heart declares DeepPurple their out and out favorite band. My top ten (today): 1. Perfect Strangers 2. Flight of the rat 3. Sometimes I feel like screaming 4. Highway Star 5. Burn 6. Before time began 7. Pictures of home 8. Livin’ Wreck 9. Nobody’s home 10. You keep on movin’ I forgot to do my honorable mentions. This could be a huge list. 1. Fools; can’t believe it’s not in my top ten 2. Birds of prey; incredible song. 3. Strangeways; always loved it 4. April; taste of what was to come 5. Hallelujah; fantastic Cook/Greenaway song 6. Soldier of Fortune; sheer class 7. When a blindman cries; not to be outdone 8. Mitzi Dupree; wonderful bawdy song 9. The surprising; such tone 10. Child in time; timeless
I'm all in with you Pete. Same about hits, heard them way to much. Folks get mad at me for playing music I like, but they don't know it wasn't on the radio🎶✌️🎶
My top 10 10. Smoke on the water 9. Might just take your life 8. Highway star 7. Getting tighter 6. Coming home 5. The gypsy 4. Lady double dealer 3. Lady luck 2. Mistreated 1. Burn
Pete, people do not have a clue. For example, if FM radio slammed The Wanton Song or That's The Way down everyone's throats since those 2 came out, then there is a very good possibility these 2 songs would be very popular. People are afraid to be different and it's the human element to fit in, therefore they just go with the masses. Good list, Pete. Child In Time is a beast of a song. I agree, Blackmore's best solo. Wo heavy and full of feel, especially those first few bars of that solo.
1. Child in Time 2.Highway Star 3. Strange Kind Of Woman 4 Black Night 5. Mistreated 6 Into The Fire 7. Never Before 8 Speed king 9 Might Just Take your life 10. Gypsy. Great band Brilliant music.
I like the overplayed songs in this case... never get tired of them. 1) Smoke on the Water 2) Hush 3) Perfect Strangers 4) My Woman From Tokyo 5) April 6) Burn 7) Child In Time 8) Highway Star 9) Soldiers of Fortune 10) Lazy
Great list. My picks from best to worst... Misstreated, pictures of home, into the fire, child in time, knocking at your back door, highway star, black night, smoke on the water, wasted sunsets, perfect strangers
Love the channel. Biggest challenge I would have doing a Purple list like you did is that I love the live recordings of the songs way more than the studio. Highway Star from Made In Japan and Speed King from In Concert 1970 - 1972 are my top two fav songs...but I never listen to them off the studio records. Always thought their songs had an extra energy when played live.
I have always been a deep cut kind of guy and have turned on people to lots songs that they did not know about. My brother who is in mid 40s 10 yrs younger than me comes over for a monthly jam session of my old cds because of my playlist of songs that kick ass but are never played on classic rock stations. Keep up the good work brother.
Couldn't agrree more about Child In Time. Hearing it for the first time was a milestone in my musical development on par with hearing Iron Man by Black Sabbath for the first time.
That is s damn fine list Pete, and your honourable list covered all bases. Yesh had to have a good chuckle at how it panned out with 5 cuts from the mk12 & mk 3 lineups!! Good on you Pete and thanks for taking the time to compile this list from a great band.
#10 Mandrake Root #9 Demons Eye #8 Lazy #7 Drifter #6 Love Child #5 Dealer #4 Bloodsucker #3 Rat Bay Blue #2 Burn #1 You Fool No One it was hard Pete Deep Purple top notch Musicians Blackmore Tommy Bolin Jon Lord Glenn Hughes Gillan Ian Paice great drummer Keep Rocking Pete
My top 10 10. Stormbringer 9. Woman from Tokyo 8. Fireball 7. Never before 6. Child in time 5. Strange kind of woman 4. Black night 3. Smoke on the water 2. Burn 1. Highway star
Nice list Pete. Here's my; a list of usual suspects and some early work that I quite like: 1. Highway star 2. Woman from Tokyo 3. Smoke on the water 4. Lazy 5. Black night 6. Burn 7. Pictures of home 8. Perfect strangers 9. Wring that neck 10. Demon’s eye
Just saw Deep Purple on the = 1 tour and I am now a appreciator of their music. I've been listening to more and more of their tracks and appreciate the suggestions. So far Knocking At Your Back Door is the most catchy, but I have to say the way they presented Hush visually and performance at the concert two days ago has it etched in my mind. :D They are old as hell and rock just as much.
My ten favorite Deep Purple songs are, in no particular order, are: Child In Time Highway Star Pictures of Home Smoke On the Water Space Truckin’ And The Address Our Lady Not Responsible Holy Man Flight Of The Rat
Deep Purple is my fav group also with many close seconds. Saw them Live in 1973 or so. I agree with Child In Time. I am not able to pick my top 10...too difficult! I understand your picks and at least you could do it. I can't! lol. Too many I would have to leave out and it makes my brain wobble. Nice job here
We come here to “meet” you, Pete: it’s your encyclopedic knowledge, taste, and enthusiasm that make your shows so interesting. All selections of music are intensely personal: rather weird anyone could take issue with that.
So many you mentioned are my favourites. Agree Child in Time No 1. Just as great today as it was then. Purple got an award for In Rock from a U.K. magazine 5 or 6 years ago. A journalist said “Even if it was recorded today in the best studio with the best equipment and the same band you couldn’t make that album sound better than it does” Also heard that the band had just finished the last recording session for In Rock and were heading north for a gig. Roger turned to Jon Lord and said “ You know ... it could have been better”. Jon said “Roger, if it could have been better it would have been better”. Illustrates the standard they must have set, for what proved to be their breakthrough album. Still my favourite. When I first played it I remember thinking how is it possible to play those instruments/sing like that and make them sound like that? Perfect strangers indeed.
10. I'm So Glad 9. Our Lady 8. When A Blind Man Cries 7. Soon Forgotten 6. Flight Of The Rat 5. Speed King 4. Fools 3. Burn 2. Child In Time (MIJ) 1. Highway Star (MIJ)
Child in time Pictures of home Space Truckin' When a blind man cries Perfect strangers Highway star Hush Black night Stormbringer Sitting in a dream (live with Dio) This is a tough one Pete. I feel I left off so many!!!!
My Top 10:- 10. Lady Double Dealer 9. The Battle Rages On 8. Not Responsible 7. Knocking At Your Back Door 6. Stormbringer 5. Mistreated 4. Highway Star 3. The Gypsy 2. Burn 1. Child In Time
Thanks for that list. My favourite is still Smoke on the Water for the mixture of the extremely simple notes ad the outstandingly foxy Riffs you can hear
I love mkll. However, BURN!! An absolute, belter, & classic, song. It's got everything!!! I have to say it:Blackmore, what a fantastic, guitarist. A tease, a strop, the, mysterious, man, in black. An, awesome riff, maestro, searing, snake-charmer, leads, strong, melodic songs. This, superb, guitarist has contributed so much,.. for, DECADES!!! I've been a fan for 50 years. I ain't stopping now. The drive, & creative energy of the man, is, ASTOUNDING!!!!
Very great list here for DP - i missed this one but fantastic list ! - I love MK III as well and agree Burn, Stormbringer & Mistreated are some of DCs best vocal performances!!
Nice one and keep those top 10s coming! Deep Purple! The BEST hard rock band ever and very multi-dimensional due to members coming and going. My top 10 include Lazy, the alt. version of Smoke on the Water (the solo's better IMHO), Child in Time, April (Mk I), Highway Star, Wring That Neck, Grabsplatter, Perfect Strangers (Mk II Part II), Place In Line, and probably Fools. I am mostly a Mk II guy. DP is a hand that it'd be easy to also have a top 20 or 25. My top 10 for Purple jumps around a bit.
I so agree that the "Made in Japan" version of "Smoke on the water" has a better solo than the studio version. In fact, it's a better track altogether and Jon Lord's cleverly tossed off solo on it at the end makes it a much better song, as does Richie's slight deviation right at the start of the song. For me there are many Purple songs that are great and it is kind of fashionable in some circles to have a downer on "Smoke." But aside from the iconic riff, it's a brilliant song. It would be a fantastic song even if the riff was downplayed or not there.
10. Any Fule Kno That 9. Bludsucker 8. Love Don't mean a Thing 7. Burn 6. Stormbringer 5. Mistreated 4. Perfect Strangers 3. Space Truckin' 2. Lazy 1. Child in Time
1. Child In Time 2. Demon's Eye 3. Black Night 4. Highway Star 5. Space Truckin' 6. Burn 7. Mistreated 8. Knockin' At Your Back Door 9. When A Blind Man Cries 10. Pictures Of Home
Your a great guy and very similar to my choices,in rock and burn my favourites. Very similar story sat in my parents house listening to child in time aged 10 ( 1970 ) fresh from the record store in Manchester England. How about top 10 Camel , The Who . Cheers
Great list! Also my favorite band, for almost 50 years. I'm a few years older than you, so these guys were huge in my teen years. My fave ten (subject to change), in no order: Why Didn't Rosemary Living Wreck Hard Lovin' Man Strange Kind of Woman I'm Alone Fools Highway Star Maybe I'm A Leo Smooth Dancer Rat Bat Blue
Another kickass track from " In Rock" - Flight Of The Rat. It's got everything - a Lord/Blackmore duel, great guitar work, a 25-second drum solo at the end, a couple of "funky" guitar riffs thrown in, and of course, impeccable vocals.
That one did not make my list, sadly, but you didn't mention Lord's solo, his best ever. Man, he just lets it ALL go. My wife had a movie playing on her phone one day and FOTR was played during it. Sorry, but I never caught the title of the flick.
My Top 10 favorite Purple songs are as follows: Smoke on the Water Strangeways Highway Star Hush (Mach I) Perfect Strangers Knocking on Your Back Door Child in Time Woman from Tokyo Lazy (tie) Call of the Wild / Vincent Price
10: burn 9: highway star 8: knocking at your back door 7: bad attitude 6: sometimes I feel like screaming 5: into the fire 4: smooth dancer 3: fireball 2: fools 1: mistreated
*My Deep Purple Top Ten:* 1) Child In Time 2) Speed King 3) Burn 4) Black Night 5) Highway Star 6) Strange Kind Of Woman 7) Hush 8) Woman From Tokyo 9) Lazy 10) Perfect Strangers *Honorable Mentions:* Kentucky Woman; Fireball; No No No; Demon's Eye; Space Truckin'; Smoke On The Water; Stormbringer (so close); Knockin' At Your Back Door; A Gypsy's Kiss; Wasted Sunsets; Bad Attitude; Hush 1988; King Of Dreams; Fire In The Basement; The Battle Rages On (need to check-out *Purpendicular* - yeah, I know)
My favorite song on In Rock is Flight of the Rat , which strangely did not even get a mention. That's cool . Many years ago I made a cassette of Best of Deep Purple to play in the car . It contained most of the songs mentioned . The tape had about 20 songs on it , even Blackmore's fantastic elongated solo from the 1st movement of Jon Lord's Concerto . It was very tricky to record it from a vinyl album , took me about 3 goes to get the cueing right .
Tunes I go back tear after year after year - The Shield, April, Faultline/The Painter, Child in Time, Flight of the Rat, Fools, No One Came, Pictures of Home, When a Blind Man Cries, SOTW Live - Made in Japan, Place in Line, Stormbringer, Soldier of Fortune, This Time Around/Owed to G, You Keep On Movin, Perfect Strangers, Son of Alerick, The Battle Rages On, King of Dreams, Fire in the Basement

Pete- I always enjoy your videos! Glad to see your channel grow. We are about the same age, I'm 52. I have a younger brother but no older siblings. Wen I was a teenager in the early 80's, I always loved friends with older siblings that could turn me on to stuff. You are like that more knowledgeable friend turning me on to new stuff. Also, Rolling Stone, Spin, Hit Parader and Cream were also required reading. Id love a video if you talked a little about finding out about bands back then. How big concerts were. They would announce a date and we would get tickets the day they announced. Cheers.
Listing your top ten songs that YOU love and not just reeling off the most famous ones is not only more interesting but infinitely more honest. Kudos to you. If I was going to do my top ten Deep Purple songs Smoke on the water would be NOWHERE to be found.
Deep Purple is also my favorite band since I was 12.My list would be pretty different from yours, although not complaining about your list. The honorable mentions from Fireball album would all beat out Stormbringer album songs for me.DP has so many great songs/performances that it is tough to pick a top 10.Enjoyed your take on it!
You got the best channel going. Like you DP is easily my favorite but I can’t compare the different incarnations so I usually have a top list for each. You mentioned all the great songs but others I rate very high are Shield, Flight of the Rat, When a Blind Man Cries, Lazy, the awesome Place in Line, Sail Away, Hold On, Owed to G, Strangeways, the Aviator, Walk On, Never a Word, Before Time Began and Clearly Quite Absurd. Man there is so much. Deep Purple has the best depth ever.
I love perpendicular but I'm sorry but "soon forgotten" has to be the most appropriately titled song ever. I absolutely can not listen to it, just terrible.
Deep respect for the little rant at the beginning. I wish more music fans were like you, but sadly most people just wants to hear the hits and nothing else.
Thanks Pete. My favorite band too. It seems like an impossible task. Especially, diving beyond the 70's. Great top 10 choices. ...and I also LOVE Time to KIll...and want one more studio album. Right on Pete.
Well said at the begin, totally agree with what you said. Through you I have discovered so much music because of your recommended deep cuts and just in general how you don't always mention the fan favourites. That is why I would love to hear your top 10 Jimi Hendrix songs. I think I have heard all the ones everyone always mentions, time to rediscover the not so popular songs from Jimi Hendrix. Will keep asking I realise not a popular request. Keep doing your top 10 songs the way your doing it now, love it. Cheers.
Another fantastic top ten Pete! Second guessed the top three, but then it looks like I wasn't alone doing so! Wring That Neck and Mandrake Root always been favourites of mine although I only really know them from the Live 70/72 album which I had on tape and recently purchased the CD. My band have recently started to play Blindman at gigs , a similar tune to Child In Time on some levels....but you can get away playing it without a keyboard. Looking forward very much to the Heep show ( and fingers crossed for the inclusion of Salisbury.... LOL!)
My Top 10 Favorite Deep Purple Songs: This was Hard. 10: Help (Shades of Deep Purple) 9: Burn 8: Woman from Tokyo (Who do we think we are) 7: Fools (Fireball) 6: The Drifter (Come Taste the Band) 5: Super Trouper (Who do we think we are) 4: Fireball 3: Child in Time (Deep Purple In Rock) 2: Highway Star/Space Trucking (Machine Head) 1: Strange Kind of Woman (Fireball) Honorable Mentions: (Shades of Deep Purple) Hey Joe (The Book of Taliesyn) Anthem (Deep Purple) The Painter (Deep Purple in Rock) Speed King (Fireball) The Mule (Machine Head) Pictures of Home (Who do we think we are) Mary Long (Burn) Mistreated (Stormbringer) Stormbringer (Come Taste the Band) Dealer (Perfect Strangers) A Gypsy's Kiss (The House of Blue Light) Dead or Alive (Slaves and Masters) King of Dreams (The Battle Rages on) The Battle Rages on (Whoosh!) Throw my Bones
I'm a year younger than you Pete and likewise got into Mark II Purple and In Rock is my favourite album and Child In Time is my favourite song. Here's my favourite top 10 tracks: 10 - Bloodsucker 9 - Fireball 8 - Stormbringer 7 - Black Night 6 - Demon's Eye 5 - Woman From Tokyo 4 - Speed King 3 - Pictures of Home 2 - Sail Away 1 -Child In Time
We agree on number 1! Chilling, chilling song. Always loved "Mary Long", I know it's one of their simpler tunes, but, I dig it. As always, well done Pete...I almost forgot about When A Blind Man Cries! I think Blackmore hated that song.
My picks: 10. King of dreams 9. You keep on moving 8. Fireball 7. Highway star 6. Burn 5. Perfect strangers 4. Child in time 3. When a blind man cries 2. Pictures of home 1. Lazy
Child in time is definitely one my favorite songs ever.
Maybe the first prog metal song
Child in Time gives me chills every time I hear it
one of the greatest songs of all time...
And this is why I tune in. I'm not interested in a list of the usual suspects. Music is personal. I've never been a "singles" listener. I'm an album listener. As a result, I would find it difficult to put together ten songs. Thanks for sharing.
Child In Time has to be number one, take one's pick for the rest.
Time for me to belly up to the bar:
1. Child in Time- -this song alone should have gotten them into the Hall.
2. The Battle Rages On--Brimming with urgency and superbly crafted
3. Burn--Just kicks you in the throat and laughs at your pain
4. No One Came--Just feels good and years ahead
5. Mistreated-- Could be my number two on any given day
6. You Fool No One--A great way to capture the era
7. You Keep On Moving--Wistful, earnest, yet somber.
8. Hallelujah--A great showcase for Ian and a great transitional piece
9. Anya--Takes one to a mystical place.
10. Stormbringer--This song can never be played loud enough
The list is fluid much as my moods are. Could easily hit 10 before getting to Machine Head. Or 10 after Who Do We Think We Are. Do with it what you will..
I'd have a much easier time putting together a top ten relationship list than any music list. I hear you alxf66.
For bands so greats like Purple a ranking with only ten songs is stupid and ridiculous...
Fantastic band.

2, Highway Star
3. Child In Time
4. Woman From Tokyo
5. Stormbringer
6. Strange Kind Of Woman
7. You Fool No One
8. Speed King
9. Mistreated
10. Black Night
Thanks for mentioning Black Night. Forgot that tune. Kick ass Blackmore solo on that song.
Excuseme,and Mark 4?. Good,thanks 🙄
Fuckin' awesome list
Ritchie stole the Black Night riff from Ricky Nelson's "Summertime". Yup.
The Made In Japan version of Space Truckin' absolutely blew my mind the first time I heard it and it still does. To this day, it's still my very favourite Deep Purple song.
Made In Japan might be the greatest live album of all time. Every song is better than its studio version on that album.
@@SuperStrik9 Yessongs is also right up there in my mind.
+Dave It's on my list as my favorite recording by ANYONE, ever. Have listened to it hundreds of times.
@@SuperStrik9 "Every song is better than every other song" :)
Love your channel Pete!! Really dig the top 10 lists. Purple is my favorite band. I am almost 60, and I have been following Purple since 1968. They have been an integral, important part of my life for half a century.

7. Now What?!
6. Purpendicular
5. Battle Rages On
4. Fireball
3. In Rock
2. Burn
1. Machine Head
What's amazing about CIT is that Ritchie was told, you have 5 minutes to put down a solo, and he comes up with that gem! Then he apologizes later that it was not better!! That's genius. As much as I like the MIJ version of CIT (totally frenetic), I really love the version from Live in Stockholm. What are your thoughts about that version?
Thanks Pete!! Keep up the great work))
Glad you included battle rages on which is a fantastic under appreciated classic
Killer top 10 there Pete! Here’s mine:

@@sandybeck1358 You know that not everyone will have the same opinion as you, right?
I sure love those Blackmore/Lord guitar/organ duels!
That's a wonderful way to put it-duels!
Bloodsucker rules
1. April
2. Son of Alerik
3. Anthem
4. Child in Time
5. When a Blind Man Cries
6. Blind
7. Pictures of Home

Awesome list Pete!
Amazing band - Amazing songs...😃👍
1. The Battle Rages On
(Probably one of the most powerful riffs ever)
2. Anthem
(I recognized how great this song is when I watched the German film Requiem. In one scene the lead actress Sandra Hüller dances to it and it is also in the end titles. It is a very sad film and the dancing scene is the happiest moment for her character, which makes it so memorable.)
3. Fireball
4. Burn
5. A Twist in the Tale
6. Child in Time
7. Bird Has Flown
8. Why Didn't Rosemary
9. April
10. Wring That Neck
Pete, it is exactly how you say, if people want to see a list of their most successful or well-known songs, it's probably easy to find on the web, it is your personal choice we like to know :)
Great list, unusual choices. I must check out that film
My favorite song of all time. Child in time
Great video Pete. Child In Time is my favourite like yourself. That’s why I like your lists, you cover the whole discography with the deep cuts. You don’t rattle off the greatest hits CD. Great stuff.
INDEED
It's my favorite band of all time as well, Pete. There is such an underrated awesomeness to this band. I love Child in Time as well. I also like 2 songs from Mark 5, which would be Perfect Strangers but especially Knocking on your Back Door.
*Perfect Strangers* & *Knocking at Your Back Door* was the Mach II line-up. Mach V line-up was with Joe Lynn Turner replacing Ian Gillian for the *Slaves and Masters* album.
Thank you for sharing your favourites!!!
Child In Time is a masterpiece
Thanks for the mention of Mitzi Dupree. After all that years this song is still in my top list - can't exactly say why but I love it.
Good Job Pete. Everybody loves the hits of Deep Purple. I appreciate discover other songs and your point of view. thank you.
Brilliant list. And completely different from mine.
It’s awesome to meet another person that hand on heart declares DeepPurple their out and out favorite band.

4. Highway Star
5. Burn

8. Highway star
7. Getting tighter
6. Coming home
5. The gypsy
4. Lady double dealer
3. Lady luck
2. Mistreated
1. Burn
Very good list!!!
Indeed! Lowest common denominator is a safe spot to land... Myself, avoid fitting in most of the time.....
1. Child in Time
2.Highway Star
3. Strange Kind Of Woman
4 Black Night
5. Mistreated
6 Into The Fire
7. Never Before
8 Speed king

child in time,
knocking at your back door,
highway star,
black night,
smoke on the water,
wasted sunsets,
perfect strangers
What's great about your top ten Pete is you make me think and search for the songs that I've never listened to.Thanks keep up the good work.
Great list I would put a lot of the same but I’d have to include no one came probably one of my favorites of all time
I have always been a deep cut kind of guy and have turned on people to lots songs that they did not know about.
Great Pete
I simply love "Child in time", wonderful!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘

My ten favorite Deep Purple songs are, in no particular order, are:
Child In Time
Highway Star
Pictures of Home
Smoke On the Water
Space Truckin’
And The Address
Our Lady
Not Responsible
Holy Man
Flight Of The Rat
Deep Purple is my fav group also with many close seconds. Saw them Live in 1973 or so. I agree with Child In Time. I am not able to pick my top 10...too difficult! I understand your picks and at least you could do it. I can't! lol. Too many I would have to leave out and it makes my brain wobble. Nice job here
I have just enjoyed a best of Deep Purple on an old BASF chromdioxid super tape (early 80s). Still sounds great and I never tire of the songs.
Thanks Pete, loved your list, here is mine in reverse order.
10 - Strange kind of woman
9 - Woman from Tokyo
Where's the rest? :)
A Gypsy's Kiss and Under the Gun are EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!
Mad Dog & Dead or Alive rock too!!!!
We come here to “meet” you, Pete: it’s your encyclopedic knowledge, taste, and enthusiasm that make your shows so interesting. All selections of music are intensely personal: rather weird anyone could take issue with that.
Mary long from who do we think we are First heard it in 1986. Still got the tape!
Great Picks, Child in Time is also my favorite, the one in Made in Japan
So many you mentioned are my favourites. Agree Child in Time No 1. Just as great today as it was then.
Purple got an award for In Rock from a U.K. magazine 5 or 6 years ago. A journalist said “Even if it was recorded today in the best studio with the best equipment and the same band you couldn’t make that album sound better than it does”
Also heard that the band had just finished the last recording session for In Rock and were heading north for a gig.
10. I'm So Glad

Very great list here for DP - i missed this one but fantastic list ! - I love MK III as well and agree Burn, Stormbringer & Mistreated are some of DCs best vocal performances!!
Child in time! Yes!!
10. Any Fule Kno That
9. Bludsucker

My fave ten (subject to change), in no order:
Why Didn't Rosemary
Living Wreck
Hard Lovin' Man
Strange Kind of Woman
I'm Alone
Fools
Highway Star
Maybe I'm A Leo
Smooth Dancer
Rat Bat Blue
Another kickass track from " In Rock" - Flight Of The Rat. It's got everything - a Lord/Blackmore duel, great guitar work, a 25-second drum solo at the end, a couple of "funky" guitar riffs thrown in, and of course, impeccable vocals.
That one did not make my list, sadly, but you didn't mention Lord's solo, his best ever. Man, he just lets it ALL go.
My wife had a movie playing on her phone one day and FOTR was played during it. Sorry, but I never caught the title of the flick.
Found it - "The Damned United", BBC 2021
My Top 10 favorite Purple songs are as follows:
Smoke on the Water

My favorite song on In Rock is Flight of the Rat , which strangely did not even get a mention.
That's cool . Many years ago I made a cassette of Best of Deep Purple to play in the car . It
contained most of the songs mentioned . The tape had about 20 songs on it , even Blackmore's
fantastic elongated solo from the 1st movement of Jon Lord's Concerto . It was very tricky to
record it from a vinyl album , took me about 3 goes to get the cueing right .

Got it Pete purple rocks
I love the first 4 songs on Purpendicular. Only got into the Morse era in the last year or so.
Keep doing what you're doing
LOL!)
It's how the music moves each individual.
