Enjoy this rare and old treasure from 1973.
Re-released on the new extended version CD "Never Turn Your Back On A Friend - 2004 and available from the bands official web site... www.budgie.uk.com/
NOTE :-
For those who don't know, the story behind the video goes something like this...
Budgie manager Graham Moloney had made repeated attempts to get Budgie on the Old Grey Whistle Test TV show, without luck. He said that the show's producer and director Mike Appleton and Colin Strong just didn't want to know.
So Budgie did the Breadfan video independently in a London studio. A late technical problem with the filming of a Sly Stone concert meant Breadfan got played on OGWT on 24 July 1973.
About 10 years ago. ex-Bandolier member Terry Cubberley bought a copy of the 18mm video tape of Breadfan on eBay. The tape had video but no sound. Terry sent the tape to ex-Budgie drummer Ray Phillips and Ray got someone he knew at BBC Wales to transfer the video from the deteriorating tape to digital media, and dub/sync the audio.
Thanks to Terry and Ray, the video ended up on the Never Turn Your Back remaster on the band's label Noteworthy, and then on UA-cam.
Almost seven million views later this superb Classic by Budgie continues to command an ever increasing and well deserved Army of adoring fans the world over.
Came here to pay my respects tonight. What an incredible talent and voice. Fly on little Budgie 🦜

Most underrated frontman /band to ever grace the airwaves. RIP Burke
Saw them supporting Ozzy in 1980 (Brum Odeon). Absolutely kicked bottom. \salute
Saw them at the Marquee in the 80's with a band called Dumpy's Rusty Nuts. Bloody great night

That guitarist, smirking like he KNOWS he's playing the baddest riff ever ❤

BUDGIE, the most underrated rock band ever. they were so far ahead of their time.
I saw them a couple of times at Reading festival . Awesome. Very underrated .
The world was just not ready for them, but every rock musician worth their salt was influenced by them. it's why there are so many cover versions of their songs by 80's metal bands out there
They were not underrated. They were IT when they happened on the scene!
Hola...Creo que es una banda poco conocida, cada amigo a quien la recomiendo dice no conocerla. Quienes la conocen o comienzan a escucharla la tienen en un alto valor. Tal vez fueron presa de su crítica, como en este "Bread Fan"!!!
I'll drink to that...
I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of John Burke Shelley on the 10th January 2022.
We were all hoping, I am sure, that Burke would return to live performing, but very sadly this was not to be.
My sincere condolences go out to Burke's family in this very sad moment.
Rest in peace now Burke, your music will be remembered and treasured forever by millions of adoring Budgie supporters.

Didn't even realize Burke Shelley had passed away. Very unfortunate to lose one of the pioneers of metal/hard rock. They were super heavy for their time and had a big influence on the development of heavy metal. Burke, in particular, had some of the best bass grooves and one of the best voices of the 1970's. RIP, Burke Shelley. You will be missed.
Kudos to all the teens of the 70s who would find and support bands like budgie, and the record companies who signed these talented niche bands.
Well I’m a Zeppelin fan since the 70’a and I don’t remember these guys until a friend of mine sent it to me tonight . They were great. 👍
His voice in the acoustic section is utterly brilliant

@@goldenratio5117 Listen to the album "Bandolier", excellent stuff, have had the pleasure of knowing of Budgie since the mid 70's!
Saw them in concert early 70s great band!
I was among the few Americans who recognized the quality of Budgie.
I chose them as part of a seven song/four band (some bands had more than one song) for a compilation album for limited distribution to FM radio two years before their debut album. I was close with Dave who engineered their first release so I got to pop in on the recording sessions.
I love the rawness of this song, the picking noises really adds to it, makes it feel like a budgie chirping or something which is ironic.
We don't really think of rock bands as being able to swing, but Budgie were that rare exception. They were so tight and locked in they were more like a jazz trio, effortlessly able to move and change shapes mid song without even a flicker.
Rest In Peace! May the rest of the world know your glory!
My Band had the pleasure of supporting Budgie a few times in the 70s was instantly impressed with their songwriting abilities and incredible musicality. Watched then from the side of the stage playing parents, bread fan, In the grip of the tyre fitters hand, etc. Will always remember those days with great affection.
I love it guys. I played Metallica's version of the song at the Roxy Theater in Buckhead on the north side of Atlanta Georgia in 1996. It was with my band Surge Dragon. MTV sponsored us and 5 other bands. We headlined the show. Thanks for sharing guys.
This is why the 70's was the greatest decade for music, and it's not even close.
So true.
Disagree personally as a fan of heavier music which came around more in the next decade, but 70s was good
@@HanzTheODST Faster songs came along in the 80's, but certainly not heavier. But I love all metal genre's, so it's cool.

One of the greatest bands of all time. Could keep to the likes of Rush, Sabbath, Motörhead, Priest, Yes and other bands influenced by them all at the same time during their career...
Budgie brought me here. I was in a garage band that practiced in an old pig shed on a mates family’s farm. We used to do this song. I think we did it justice. Our lead guitarist went on to play in many bands and makes a living as a session musician to this day. Our singer had lost two fingers in a motorbike crash and his voice really suited this song. Our drummer went on to die in a horrific industrial accident. I still have some tapes of us rehearsing. We were called Virgin Blood. We did a version of this long before Metallica.
Cool
You should post your cover of this song on here. I was in a local Atlanta rock and roll band in 90'-91 and I found someone that had a cassette of our release recently (I had nothing of it) and I was surprised how well it had aged. 1-2 guitars, a bass, a drummer and a singer playing rock 'n roll will always age better than electronic music, rap or radio pop or pop country will. Budgie released this song when I was a little kid, but I was a teenager when Metallica covered this in '87, hard to believe it was only 14 years between the original and the cover, but 23 years since the cover! BTW I knew a man who'd grown up in Wales and saw them playing before they were signed, said they were really good live, no surprise there
Unlikely, kiddo. Metallica brings everywhere here.. their 30+ year old cover is far better.
@@MedicineWolf It has been 33 years since metallica covered this.

Hi- You are right. Although they produced great songs & albums, they were never mentioned in the same breath as Purple, Sabbath, Zeppelin etc, unfounded in my opinion. Read back to the Egg: Budgie's Influential Early Years 1967-73 by Chris Pike and you will learn how this one and pretty much only "video" from the first era of Budgie with Ray on drums came about. It was shot on 16mm film and the film was bought on eBay. There was no audio track but since the performance was "mimed" they just sync'd up the 16mm footage with an audio recording of the song and there you have it, the only Budgie "video" from the early period. Awesome!
