This band was HUGE in Poland in the 70's, due to heavy promotion in the Polish radio, they were just as big as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. It wasn't until the Iron Curtain fell, when we could finally get to know real charts and numbers and look at the bands popularity from a worldwide perspective, that we finally realized that in fact they weren't as huge as these bands, and it came as a huge surprise, because really, we didn't see that much difference in quality between all these bands.
Amazing! I love Budgie, I have all their albums both on vinyl and cd. I just learned that Burke Shelley is very ill, with a critical aneurysm, send your prayers to Burke!
Here is how i discovered BUDGIE. As a young G.I. stationed in Fort Hood, Texas, 1977. I would hang out in Austin, which was a hotbed of new music, with venues like Armadillo World HQ, Raul's, Anton's. Driving south from Ft.Hood, I would get frustrated with FM radio...not too much AOR, for some reason. Switched to AM and found KMAC, out of San Antonio. They were playing PARENTS, from the album, NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON A FRIEND. Mind blown! Then Joe Anthony would come on the air and talk about the band. KMAC-AM and Joe Anthony were virtually alone in promoting Budgie in the USA. I bought every LP I could find. I was shocked this band never got the recognition it deserved.
One of the great unsung bands ever,, Seen them live many times, the Classic line-up of Burke Shelley, Tony Bourge and Ray Phillips were a killer combination....."Never turn your Back on a friend" is Still One of My Favourite Albums (by Anybody).I don't think they get the credit for the influence they were on other bands...Hopefully a few of you guys out there invest a few of their albums...Thanks For featuring Them Pete.
The Bourge/Philips lineup is not necessarily the classic lineup, per se though. Stevie Williams was the drummer from mid 70s through the remainder of the bands existence. Bourge played on couple more albums than Big John Thomas, but Big John, Burke Shelly, and Steve really took it to the next level, especially on Power Supply, and Night Flight was very strong too. They really misfired on Deliver Us From Evil, but it had a couple good songs. Sure, In For the Kill was great, Bandolier, NTYBOAF, self titled, great stuff. I really like the NWOBHM phase tgough
As a Brit, I am so glad you did this video. When I was at Grammar School a good friend introduced me to Breadfan, and that persuaded me to buy the EP "If Swallowed Do Not Induce Vomiting", which had that HEAVY track "Panzer Division Destroyed". On the Power Supply Tour a group of five of us went to see them at Chatham Central Hall. There were only about 10 other people there. Burke Shelley told us to tell our mates who didn't come they were wankers. I thought they were better than Iron Maiden who I saw at the same venue a week earlier with Praying Mantis and the place was packed. Go figure!! This was 1980. Have seen them a couple of times since.
Budgie were absolutely one of the best bands in the UK in the 70's. IMHO Bourge and Shelley rank with the likes of Plant, Page, Jagger and Richards..easily!
What can I add, Pete. You said it all. In for the kill and Never turn your back were a huge part of my youth. Played those albums to death! Criminally underrated band. Legendary music!
It’s a shame about Burke Shelly being so sick. His prognosis is not good. He can no longer sing but can still play.bass. He has chose quality of life over living as long as possible.
I bought the MCA 73-75 box set not really knowing what to expect and they completely blew me away. Fantastic band - now I need to get some more! Nice one Pete.
Budgie were never as popular as they should have been. I remember walking into record stores in the UK in the 70's, as a teen, and requesting their music. Most had never heard of them! Today I think they are still horribly under rated!! Thank you for bringing their awesome music to the general public's attention. Incredible musicians.
thanks Pete for promoting my 2nd favourite band. Seen them 23 times over the years. For me Bandolier was their peak but i think they lost a bit of musicality when Tony Bourge quit. When Rob Kendrick joined they played 2 new songs which were stunning. Unfortunately they were never released but Burke said recently he was hoping to release some material that have not seen the light of day which i hope includes these 2 songs. As for your favourite In For The Kill...great choice but, for me side 2 (okay i'm a vinylist) is a bit of a let down. Anyway i hope Burke regains his health which has not been great recently. Still many great great memories!

Ray philips ex drummer of BUDGIE/ said after he quit in 1974. He was broke. Said. METALLICA with their Breadfan remake helped him huge with royalties from Garage inc.
Right on Pete! I love this band. Discovered them, picked up In For The Kill, and was hooked. I picked all of the Tony Bourge era discs and they are all great.
Great review! I saw them at a bar in Davenport, Iowa, around the release of Bandolier. There were five people there and we stood literally just a few feet away from them when they played, which wasn't very long. The power cut out twice during their first song, and they only played maybe 4-5 songs all together. I still have my ticket!

I haven't heard Budgie in a long time, I remember enjoying most of their albums... There are four of them that I haven't heard though. Tony Bourge was a very underrated guitarist, he had all the lead chops and his riffs sounded amazing... Heavy and with a lot of clarity...
Love early Budgie! I've only heard the first 6 albums but those are all great. Super hard to rank the top 3 especially but I actually think I would order them the same way as you.
Been a Budgie fan for 50 years and really enjoyed this review. I was fortunate enough to see them live in Hammersmith in 1974 which was an experience I will never forget. I have all the albums up to Impeckable where I also detected a subtle shift to a more "mainstream" sound and when Tony left in 1978 I didn't buy any more. However after hearing this review I might have a serious listen to Power Supply. As many others have said already, possibly the greatest under-rated, under-known band of all time.
Brilliant brilliant band those early albums are up there with the best. On the way to see them live at Newcastle City Hall in the 70's and heading for a pre-gig beer, I passed the local fish n chip cafe and inside was Burke Shelley, Tony Bourge and Ray Phillips enjoying a fish n chip supper before the concert. Always turning me onto unknown bands, like The Godz, UFO, Ac/Dc, and Budgie, ..all these pretty underground for 1978, growing up in Iowa. Wasnt until about actually 2 years ago!!, ,,,that i rediscovered those EXCELLENT BUDGIE albums. One of my favorite bands, now.

Power Supply was their big come-back LP in the US. They had kind of disappeared then this came back kind of NWOBHM and kicked it. Also with the wonderfully titled EP " If Swallowed Do Not Induce Vomiting" put'em right back into it. I can't disagree.
One of my top 5 bands at least as heavy as Sabbath,Glad i got to see them live in 1974 in Sweden ”In for the kill tour” and also in Uk (Reading Festival) and Wembley London in 1982
Great video!, Budgie is phenomenal ! honestly every single album from the 70's / with Tony Bourge on it is a masterpiece and worth a listen. (on a side note, i'm pretty sure Rodger Dean didn't design their first album cover, but he did the album art for Squawk and Never Turn Your Back on a Friend )
Best song titles, best sense of humor and riffs Tony Iommi would be proud of. Good choice Pete to go along with 2-13-70 the 50th Anniversary on the first Sabbath album. I thought you forgot "Last Stage" but redeemed at the end. By best Budgie story is back in 1980, I paid a public library in New York to record their first 2 vinyls on reel to reel because you could not find them in the United States. They did it!! And then I found "Squawk" at a mom & pop used record shop somewhere in Colorado. My # 1 will always be "Never Turn Your Back" just because of the music + awesome Roger Dean cover. "Lies of Jim the E-Type Lover" so clever...so clever!!
You were in a very good place to see them live. I never got to see them. Although they always played in Milwaukee and San Antonio. Could never travel that far as a teen-ager.
@@ButchArgus I was lucky brian ; londoner by birth , and I was a teenager in 70's ; loads of great bands playing at the marquee and roundhouse and loads of venues. And it didn't cost much to see them. I saw thin lizzy dozens of times as well. From nighlife to jailbreak Lizzy and budgie were my favourite bands. Budgie never really broke through to the big venues unlike lizzy: they played halls and clubs, but, like I said , they were twice as powerful live as on record

Budgie is a PHENOMENAL band!!! Thanks to bands like Metallica covering Breadfan and Crash Course In Brain Surgery, Megadeth covering Melt The Ice Away, Iron Maiden covering I Can't See My Feelings, and Soundgarden covering Homicidal Suicidal because there is a huge chance I would have never heard about them. That right there tells you how huge of an impact Budgie has had in the Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal industry. They should have been a huge band with all there great riffs and catchy hooks. Breadfan is the first song I ever heard from them and I was hooked ever since. Of course I heard Metallica's version first when I got the cassette tape single of Eye Of The Beholder and it was the B side back in the late 80's. I found out a few years later that it was a cover and found out that it was a Budgie original song. I had to check it out and I loved it even more than Metallica's version. It really is a shame that Budgie never became a huge name because they definitely deserved to be. Thank you so much for doing this because everyone that is into Hard Rock/Heavy Metal needs to listen to this band.
Worth noting, early Budgie, Sabbath, and Priest albums had the same producer in Roger Bain. I often wonder how much influence he had in ensuring that heavy proto-metal sound.
He also produced such great completely underground bands Dirty Tricks, Freedom and Wild Turkey. Next to Priest and Budgie these bands were practically non-existent. Rodger Bain was obviously the George Martin of Hard Rock!

I want to say thank you for this video, Pete. I'm close to your age, and thought myself pretty well versed in Classic Rock. But not even close. The only connection I made with this band was seeing that Roger Dean did some of their covers. I had never heard their music before.... at all. This coming from a guy with a huge vinyl album collection... even the two Doors albums without Morrison, lol. I watched this video (along with the Gentle Giant review) and picked up the Budgie albums and WHOA!.... shades of Black Sabbath and many other influences.... damn fine guitar work that satisfies. I heard Turn to Stone on AM radio and HAD to have the album. I only became aware of this band from the Metallica covers. JUST Recently started discovering more Budgie songs after all this time and man they have some amazing songs that still kick ass.....the album artwork is very interesting. 70s Classic RockMetal never dies
I discovered Budgie from a 1976 J.E.M. Import Catalog given to me by Jeff, owner of Soundwaves, in 1978 during my first visit to the store. In 1978 or 1979, I found “Bandolier” and “Impeccable” in cut-out bins, so I bought them and loved the albums.
In For The Kill for me also, followed by Never Turn Your Back On A Friend and then Bandolier. I am also from the UK and saw Budgie three times in 1973/74, the last time they were supported by Judas Priest at the Marquee in Wardour Street, London. Wow, how things changed for them.
The first Budgie song I ever heard was Napoleon Bona Parte 1&2 on a pretty cool FM radio station back in '75.Yeah,there used to be cool radio in the late 60's and 70's. I was blown away by that song and had to find that album.After that I got the debut and Squawk.Couldn't get enough of them and got In For the Kill and Never Turn Your Back.Then Impeckable was their new release and I got that and was kind of disappointed. Eventually I would love a number of songs on it.Couple years later got Power Supply and thought it was good,but different.The early albums were cool and heavy,but I think they peaked as musicians and songwriters on Bandolier. The Heavier Than Air live compilation is excellent, as it has early live recordings and a full concert from the Impeckable tour.The last with Tony Bourge.They were playing at a high level live by that time.
Quality band. The unsung heroes of 70's heavy rock who did so much to shape what became heavy metal, especially in it's NWOBHM and thrash forms. Maybe their lack of recognition was down to the fact they weren't prancing pretty boys but they sure let the music do the talking. Killer riffs, well crafted songs and masters of the time change, all done to quirky titles and lyrics. Definitely one of a kind. Their debut, Never Turn Your Back On A Friend, Bandolier and In For The Kill rank amongst the best rock albums of all time.
Just catching up with your videos. I've only heard one Budgie album, but it was very memorable when a buddy of mine played it often, but I always thought it had a complexity they made sound available with a certain keen density of delivery that was atmospheric.

Just listened to "Never turn your back on a friend" and I am in love! lol I was wondering have you ever heard of the band called "Truth and Janey"? They were a band from Iowa in the mid 70s and did a KILLER album called "No rest for the wicked" it was out of print for the longest time but just became available on vinyl again If you've never heard it do yourself a favor and at least look it up on you tube I'm sure you'll fall in love with the album Unfortunately it was the bands best album as the bass player and drummer quit not too long after and the guitarist (Janey) who was excellent went disco lol but has since revived the band (with other musicians) and tours A true Rock and roll masterpiece IMHO Thanks again Pete Can't wait to hear all the other Budgie albums !! Great video! Got into Budgie through Metallica when I was in high school and never understood how they never made it here in the States. Now I gotta get me a T-shirt! And Pete, that comedy bit with your dog there is a perfect illustration of why I'm a cat person. My girl is happy to ignore everyone who comes to the door.
I know it's a cliche, but Never Turn Your Back on a Friend will always be my favorite budgie album. It has the heavy songs it has the folk songs and it has those r&b grooves. Also, every song on it is frighteningly strong. The surreal and drugged out humor of the song titles and lyrics is a nice bonus. In that way they remind me of Gong.

"Nightflight" was my first Budgie album and remains my favorite. "I turned to stone" is an unsung heavy metal anthem.

Right on Pete! I love this band. Discovered them, picked up In For The Kill, and was hooked. I picked all of the Tony Bourge era discs and they are all great.
“Bandolier” was always my favourite. I became a fan of the band when it first came out. Great episode, Pete. Enjoyed it.

Great review! I saw them at a bar in Davenport, Iowa, around the release of Bandolier. There were five people there and we stood literally just a few feet away from them when they played, which wasn't very long. The power cut out twice during their first song, and they only played maybe 4-5 songs all together. I still have my ticket!

Yeah I agree with You. The most underrated band in rock music history! I'm from Poland and if I had to mention why I'm proud of my country, it would be that it is one of the few where Budgie has always been very popular and was put as the ultimate hard rock classic so as Zeppelin, Sabbath or Purple.

Been listening to Budgie since the mid 70’s. One of my favorite bands.
I haven't heard Budgie in a long time, I remember enjoying most of their albums... There are four of them that I haven't heard though. Tony Bourge was a very underrated guitarist, he had all the lead chops and his riffs sounded amazing... Heavy and with a lot of clarity...
Love early Budgie! I've only heard the first 6 albums but those are all great. Super hard to rank the top 3 especially but I actually think I would order them the same way as you.
Been a Budgie fan for 50 years and really enjoyed this review. I was fortunate enough to see them live in Hammersmith in 1974 which was an experience I will never forget. I have all the albums up to Impeckable where I also detected a subtle shift to a more "mainstream" sound and when Tony left in 1978 I didn't buy any more. However after hearing this review I might have a serious listen to Power Supply. As many others have said already, possibly the greatest under-rated, under-known band of all time.
Brilliant brilliant band those early albums are up there with the best. On the way to see them live at Newcastle City Hall in the 70's and heading for a pre-gig beer, I passed the local fish n chip cafe and inside was Burke Shelley, Tony Bourge and Ray Phillips enjoying a fish n chip supper before the concert. Great memories of a fine band. Thanks for these Pete, great channel.
Good one again, Pardo! I first heard of them around 78, 79. A friends brother had couple albums. Always turning me onto unknown bands, like The Godz, UFO, Ac/Dc, and Budgie, ..all these pretty underground for 1978, growing up in Iowa. Wasnt until about actually 2 years ago!!, ,,,that i rediscovered those EXCELLENT BUDGIE albums. One of my favorite bands, now.
Glad to see you giving Budgie some "love" and attention Pete. My favourite album of theirs maybe a bit controversial as it features John Thomas on guitar rather than Tony Bourge, but for me it's a headbanging tour de force. I love all the Bourge stuff too.

Power Supply was their big come-back LP in the US. They had kind of disappeared then this came back kind of NWOBHM and kicked it. Also with the wonderfully titled EP " If Swallowed Do Not Induce Vomiting" put'em right back into it. I can't disagree.
Original Budgie lived ten miles from me in Wales. Saw them quite a few times.
One of my top 5 bands at least as heavy as Sabbath,Glad i got to see them live in 1974 in Sweden ”In for the kill tour” and also in Uk (Reading Festival) and Wembley London in 1982
Great video!, Budgie is phenomenal ! honestly every single album from the 70's / with Tony Bourge on it is a masterpiece and worth a listen.
(on a side note, i'm pretty sure Rodger Dean didn't design their first album cover, but he did the album art for Squawk and Never Turn Your Back on a Friend )
I recently heard Budgie for the first time. How I missed it back in the 70s/80s I don't know. I'm steadily going through the discography. Great band!
Best song titles, best sense of humor and riffs Tony Iommi would be proud of. Good choice Pete to go along with 2-13-70 the 50th Anniversary on the first Sabbath album. I thought you forgot "Last Stage" but redeemed at the end. By best Budgie story is back in 1980, I paid a public library in New York to record their first 2 vinyls on reel to reel because you could not find them in the United States. They did it!! And then I found "Squawk" at a mom & pop used record shop somewhere in Colorado. My # 1 will always be "Never Turn Your Back" just because of the music + awesome Roger Dean cover. "Lies of Jim the E-Type Lover" so clever...so clever!!
Saw them 15 or 20 times in London between 73 and 75 . Always phenomenal

You were in a very good place to see them live. I never got to see them. Although they always played in Milwaukee and San Antonio. Could never travel that far as a teen-ager.

@@ButchArgus I was lucky brian ; londoner by birth , and I was a teenager in 70's ; loads of great bands playing at the marquee and roundhouse and loads of venues. And it didn't cost much to see them. I saw thin lizzy dozens of times as well. From nighlife to jailbreak
Lizzy and budgie were my favourite bands. Budgie never really broke through to the big venues unlike lizzy: they played halls and clubs, but, like I said , they were twice as powerful live as on record

Budgie is a PHENOMENAL band!!! Thanks to bands like Metallica covering Breadfan and Crash Course In Brain Surgery, Megadeth covering Melt The Ice Away, Iron Maiden covering I Can't See My Feelings, and Soundgarden covering Homicidal Suicidal because there is a huge chance I would have never heard about them. That right there tells you how huge of an impact Budgie has had in the Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal industry. They should have been a huge band with all there great riffs and catchy hooks. Breadfan is the first song I ever heard from them and I was hooked ever since. Of course I heard Metallica's version first when I got the cassette tape single of Eye Of The Beholder and it was the B side back in the late 80's. I found out a few years later that it was a cover and found out that it was a Budgie original song. I had to check it out and I loved it even more than Metallica's version. It really is a shame that Budgie never became a huge name because they definitely deserved to be. Thank you so much for doing this because everyone that is into Hard Rock/Heavy Metal needs to listen to this band.
Worth noting, early Budgie, Sabbath, and Priest albums had the same producer in Roger Bain. I often wonder how much influence he had in ensuring that heavy proto-metal sound.
He also produced such great completely underground bands Dirty Tricks, Freedom and Wild Turkey. Next to Priest and Budgie these bands were practically non-existent. Rodger Bain was obviously the George Martin of Hard Rock!

"Bandolier" has always been a personal favorite of mine... all the albums before that were all consistently good... I didn't get into any of their releases after "Bandolier"... good band...

Thanks for the vid Pete, it's great to hear an American review a very underated British band, in this case a Welsh band. I'm Scottish, but my partner is Welsh, and it just so happens that my partners friend is friends with Steve Williams, so I've actually met the origonal Budgie drummer.
I want to say thank you for this video, Pete. I'm close to your age, and thought myself pretty well versed in Classic Rock. But not even close. The only connection I made with this band was seeing that Roger Dean did some of their covers. I had never heard their music before.... at all. This coming from a guy with a huge vinyl album collection... even the two Doors albums without Morrison, lol. I watched this video (along with the Gentle Giant review) and picked up the Budgie albums and WHOA!.... shades of Black Sabbath and many other influences.... damn fine guitar work that satisfies. Thank you so much for your videos. I'm expanding my collection. LOVE your take on good music. ELO - Out of the Blue.... first album I ever bought. I heard Turn to Stone on AM radio and HAD to have the album. I got into good music by having to watch endless disco bands on The Midnight Special just to see David Bowie sing Heroes and Alan Parsons Project video "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You".... :) Once again, thanks!

I only became aware of this band from the Metallica covers. JUST Recently started discovering more Budgie songs after all this time and man they have some amazing songs that still kick ass.....the album artwork is very interesting. 70s Classic RockMetal never dies

I discovered Budgie from a 1976 J.E.M. Import Catalog given to me by Jeff, owner of Soundwaves, in 1978 during my first visit to the store. In 1978 or 1979, I found “Bandolier” and “Impeccable” in cut-out bins, so I bought them and loved the albums.
In For The Kill for me also, followed by Never Turn Your Back On A Friend and then Bandolier. I am also from the UK and saw Budgie three times in 1973/74, the last time they were supported by Judas Priest at the Marquee in Wardour Street, London. Wow, how things changed for them.

The first Budgie song I ever heard was Napoleon Bona Parte 1&2 on a pretty cool FM radio station back in '75.Yeah,there used to be cool radio in the late 60's and 70's. I was blown away by that song and had to find that album.After that I got the debut and Squawk.Couldn't get enough of them and got In For the Kill and Never Turn Your Back.Then Impeckable was their new release and I got that and was kind of disappointed. Eventually I would love a number of songs on it.Couple years later got Power Supply and thought it was good,but different.The early albums were cool and heavy,but I think they peaked as musicians and songwriters on Bandolier. The Heavier Than Air live compilation is excellent, as it has early live recordings and a full concert from the Impeckable tour.The last with Tony Bourge.They were playing at a high level live by that time.

Quality band. The unsung heroes of 70's heavy rock who did so much to shape what became heavy metal, especially in it's NWOBHM and thrash forms. Maybe their lack of recognition was down to the fact they weren't prancing pretty boys but they sure let the music do the talking. Killer riffs, well crafted songs and masters of the time change, all done to quirky titles and lyrics. Definitely one of a kind. Their debut, Never Turn Your Back On A Friend, Bandolier and In For The Kill rank amongst the best rock albums of all time.

Just catching up with your videos. I've only heard one Budgie album, but it was very memorable when a buddy of mine played it often, but I always thought it had a complexity they made sound available with a certain keen density of delivery that was atmospheric.
Hey Pete been watching your podcast for a couple of years love it..I just had to thank you for turning me on to Budgie.!!!.I'm 62 yrs old been playing guitar for 43 years and I'm a HUGE UFO /Michael Schenker fan I had heard of Budgie back in the late 70's early 80's but never heard them I was excited to listen after I heard your enthusiasm for the band and I totally agree! Just listened to "Never turn your back on a friend" and I am in love! lol I was wondering have you ever heard of the band called "Truth and Janey"? They were a band from Iowa in the mid 70s and did a KILLER album called "No rest for the wicked" it was out of print for the longest time but just became available on vinyl again If you've never heard it do yourself a favor and at least look it up on you tube I'm sure you'll fall in love with the album Unfortunately it was the bands best album as the bass player and drummer quit not too long after and the guitarist (Janey) who was excellent went disco lol but has since revived the band (with other musicians) and tours A true Rock and roll masterpiece IMHO Thanks again Pete Can't wait to hear all the other Budgie albums !! Great video! Got into Budgie through Metallica when I was in high school and never understood how they never made it here in the States. Now I gotta get me a T-shirt! And Pete, that comedy bit with your dog there is a perfect illustration of why I'm a cat person. My girl is happy to ignore everyone who comes to the door.
I know it's a cliche, but Never Turn Your Back on a Friend will always be my favorite budgie album. It has the heavy songs it has the folk songs and it has those r&b grooves. Also, every song on it is frighteningly strong. The surreal and drugged out humor of the song titles and lyrics is a nice bonus. In that way they remind me of Gong.
