I definitely would give the Load era another look at. Some genuine great slabs of heavy rock that sadly were overlooked at the time, with Metallica's image overhaul taking most of the headlines. Load especially contained some of Hetfield's more introspective, moodier lyrics set to tones of Black Sabbath, Corrosion of Conformity, and Led Zeppelin. "Bleeding Me" is fantastic. There are huuuge shades of Sabbath's "I" stomping through that. Elsewhere, "The house that Jack Built" is a brilliant song stalking its way thru' gnarly, snarly riffs, moody melody, and laced with a cool, eerie, doomy atmosphere. And "The Outlaw Torn" is a massive, monolithic monster, that growls and broods with maturity and menace. And its enhanced, Orchestrated counterpart on S&M is one of the best things they've every done. Seriously, Load is legit. I loved it at the time, and still do. I am especially pleased to see a lot of it- and Reoad in places too- get recognized and appreciated these days, especially by younger fans.
@@yapfloptheunquenched1452 I agree. ReLoad has got its moments- "Fuel" is great revved up fun, Unforgiven 2 continues the more broodier melodic undercurrents ebbing into Load, and Ive always thought that "Fixxxer" concludes a sort of 'trilogy' on the two albums- Bleeding Me,Outlaw Torn and Fixxxer sound great together. But even Hetfield himself reckoned a couple of years back that they should have been a bit more 'selective',regarding the song output. I like all the songs in their own way, but if they had released the Best of the Best from both into one 12 song album, it really makes me wonder how tings would have been different.
@@yapfloptheunquenched1452 I thought the same exact thing. Each album has quite a few throwaways for me which is why I don’t regard it so high. But I also think those albums don’t deserve the hate they get.
Spit Out The Bone from Hardwired is so underrated, such a bad ass tune. Ride the Lightning is my favorite Tallica' album but Spit Out The Bone may be my favorite song of theirs. Top 3 at least
And Justice is my fav album, too. Master is a very close 2nd, but I love And Justice!! 1) Battery 2) And Justice For All 3) Damage, Inc. 4) Ride The Lightning 5) Trapped Under Ice 6) Whiplash 7) Blackened 8) Hit The Lights 9) The Wait 10) Anesthesia
1. Battery 2. One 3. Disposable Heroes 4. Master of Puppets 5. Ride the Lightning 6. Blackened 7. Hit the Lights 8. Fade to Black 9. And Justice For All 10. Damage Inc Very off the cuff list but the Top 3 songs, in varying order depending on day, are my 3 favs by the band. For other albums, I really love Nothing Else Matters, King Nothing, Fuel, and Some Kind of Monster. I also love the last two albums, especially songs like Cyanide, Suicide and Redemption, The Day That Never Comes, All Nightmare Long (honestly I love the whole album), and also Hardwired, Moth Into Flame, Atlas Rise, Now That Were Dead, and Spit Out the Bone. Have only seen Metallica once, in 2017. Still one of the best days of my entire life.
1 - Welcome Home (Sanitarium) This was the song that REALLY got me into Metallica and convinced me I needed all of their albums. 2 - Orion - Honestly this is an underrated masterpiece of an instrumental, I'm sad they stopped doing Instrumentals. 3 - Sad, But True (My favorite from The Black Album) 4 - The Four Horsemen 5 - Creeping Death 6 - Wherever I May Roam 7 - Fixxer - Easily the most underrated Metallica song and the best (IMO) from Re-Load 8 - Outlaw Torn - Also underrated and this would be my favorite song from Load 9 - For Whom the Bell Tolls 10 - Whiplash - This was the song that got me to buy my first Metallica album when I heard it on Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Honorable Mentions: (By order of album) Phantom Lord No Remorse Ride the Lightning Escape Call of Cthulu (I love it, but I like Orion more) Master of Puppets (Probably their best title track IMO) Disposable Heroes Damage Inc. (This would probably be my number 11) The Unforgiven Nothing Else Matters Of Wolf and Man Bleeding Me (Also a gem from Load) Fuel Memory Remains if you removed that "NANANANA" part, ruins the song for me. Where the Wild Things Are (Probably my second favorite from Re-Load) P.S. I included nothing from Justice for All because I've never really been all that impressed with it.
Good list Pete. Your lucky you got to go to Rock 'n Roll Heaven. Classic shop. Here's my list. Metal Militia Fight Fire With Fire Battery Blackened Call Of Cthulu Damage, Inc. My 10 in no particular order. Sanitarium Trapped under ice The outlaw torn Low man's lyric The unforgiven Moth into the flame Leper messiah One Thorn within Spit out the bone This list could change next week lol, I have a hard time choosing just 10.
I’m pretty late but I really love all eras of Metallica, through stylistic changes and the works. Load and Reload are excellent albums. Never understood the hate for them. Off the top of my head: Bleeding Me Until It Sleeps King Nothing Low Man’s Lyric Hero Of The Day Memory Remains Fixxxer Slither Unforgiven II The House That Jack Built Prince Charming The Outlaw Torn Carpe Diem Baby All of these are excellent and I won’t be convinced otherwise. I’m sure I’m forgetting some other favorites but anyone who didn’t give them a chance after Justice can go kick rocks. Their songwriting is still objectively good.
10 The Unforgiven trilogy tied 9 Prince Charming (starts “safe” and unravels with a great close) 8 Battery 7 Enter Sandman 6 The Four Horsemen 5 Sad But True (first song I ever heard by them- didn’t even know what the words were when I was five years old but I still tried to sing along!) 4 The Outlaw Torn 3 Now That We’re Dead (this is easily the most fun Metallica has ever had on a song. It was the first time in a long time that a first listen made me go YEEEEEESSSS and do a goddamn backflip) 2 The God That Failed (visceral, ethereal, evocative, and a good headbanger) 1 Bleeding Me. Full stop
I can get behind pretty much every one of your choices, but I don't get Now That We're Dead. Way too long, has cheesy lyrics, James' voice is also too cheerful. I only dig Kirk's solo on it.
Metallica was my favorite band , a 5 year period, like Pete days, 87-81, I first bought RIDE THE LIGHTNING and i was awestruck..the heavy riffage. Was my new favorite band. 1) ONE 2) Fade to Black 3) Blackened 4) Master of Puppets 5) Four Horsemen
My favorites change all the time but right now it would probably be 1. Fade To Black 2. Blackened 3. One 4. Master of Puppets 5. Creeping Death 6. Nothing Else Matters 7. Moth Into Flame 8. And Justice For All 9. Battery 10. For Whom The Bell Tolls
1-Master Of Puppets 2-One 3-Fade To Black 4-Seek And Destroy 5-Enter Sandman 6-For Whom The Bell Tolls 7-Sad But True 8-Welcome Home (Sanatarium) 9-Creeping Death 10-Damage Inc. But Hardwired, Battery, Whiplash, Nothing Else Matters and Fuel are very cool
1: Seek & Destroy. 2: The Four Horsemen. 3: Fade To Black. 4: Master Of Puppets. 5: Creeping Death. 6; Jump In The Fire. 7:: For Whom The Bell Tolls. 8: Blackened. 9: One. 10: Harvester Of Sorrow. The video Cliff Em All introduced me to Metallica. Nowadays I'll watch Live Shit: Binge & Purge [live in Seattle 1989]
Great list Pete...mine are these: 1. Creeping Death 2. Fade to Black 3. Master of Puppets 4. One 5. The Four Horsemen 6. Seek and Destroy 7. Welcome Home Sanitarium 8. Disposable Heroes 9. The Call of Ktulu 10. Bleeding Me

10) Orion 9) And Justice for All 8) Four Horsemen 7) Call of Ktulu 6) The Unforgiven 5) Fade to Black 4) Master of Puppets 3) Wherever I May Roam 2) One 1) No leaf clover
1. For Whom the Bell Tolls (a top-5 all-time metal song IMO) 2. Master of Puppets 3. Am I Evil 4. Seek and Destroy 5. Holier than Thou 6. Fight Fire With Fire 7. Whiplash 8. Four Horseman 9. King Nothing 10. Leper Messiah I happen to like the Black album as well as Load and Reload.
10 - The God That Failed 9 - Trapped Under Ice 8 - One 7 - For Whom The Bell Tolls 6 - Seek And Destroy 5 - Master Of Puppets 4 - Orion 3 - Battery 2 - Fade To Black 1 - Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
(My personal top 10) 1. Harvester of Sorrow 2. One 3. The Thing That Should Not be 4. Outlaw Torn 5. Blackened 6. Ride The Lightning 7. For Whom The Bell Tolls 8. Master of Puppets 9. 1. Fade To Black for me too. I knew when you were describing your #1 & 2 what they were going to be. Very similar, but Fade To Black did it better I think and 1st. Ride the Lighning is my favorite album far and away.
Creeping Death Ride the Lightning Fade to Black For Whom the Bell Tolls Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Fight Fire with Fire The Thing That Should Not Be Leper Messiah Master of Puppets Disposable Heroes Honorable Mentions: The Call of Ktulu and Orion (only left them out of top ten because they are instrumentals) And...Fade to Black only ranks so high for the long guitar lead that ends the song. That is the best solo Kirk Hammett ever did. I will often fast forward and listen to that solo over and over again. It was built from the ground up like an architect builds a beautiful structure. Every note is in its proper place and executed perfectly with intense feeling. Too bad I have NEVER heard him play it perfectly live...and I have looked far and wide.
In chronological order The Four Horsemen Fight Fire With Fire Creeping Death Master of Puppets Leper Messiah The Thing That Should Not Be Blackened Harvester of Sorrow Frayed Ends of Sanity The Day That Never Comes
It’s impossible to pick 10 top songs from Metallica’s first four albums because it’s all pretty damn good. I love it all, including the $5.98 ep. An easier top 10 for me would be my favorites from their Post-80s catalog. 1. Sad But True 2. The God That Failed 3. Halo on Fire 4. Hate Train 5. Bleeding Me 6. Broken, Beat, Scarred 7. Where The Wild Things Are 8. Outlaw Torn 9. Just a Bullet Away 10. Until It Sleeps
As usual, another spot on list, Pete. Justice was my introduction to the band after seeing the One video on MTV during a weekend marathon shortly before New Years 1990. Had to hear more so I went out that day & bought it. Still my all time favorite LP of theirs as well.
1) creeping death 2) for whom the bell tolls 3) MoP 4) fade to black 5) call of ktulu 6) disposable heroes 7) ride the lightning 8) wherever I may roam 9) battery 10) four horsemen Hon mentions: blackened, one, motorbreath, turn the page, damage Inc, sanitarium

My Top 10 favorite Metallica songs in no particular order are For Whom The Bell Tolls The Things That Should Not Be Seek And Destroy One (the very first Metallica song I've ever heard) Metal Militia Fade To Black Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Eye Of The Beholder The Four Horsemen Creeping Death Honorable Mentions Master Of Puppets Ride The Lightning Whiplash Disposable Heroes Harvester Of Sorrow Am I Evil The Unforgiven Hit The Lights Sad But True Battery
1 One 2 Orion 3 Fight fire with fire 4 Fade to black 5 Dyers eve 6 Master of puppets 7 Sanitarium 8 To live is to die 9 Creeping death 10 The four horseman A bit sick of the master of puppets song, but It gets pushed way up the list because of that amazing mid section and I nearly broke my wrist trying to play it on guitar with only down picks Fight fire with fire is the first metallica song I heard. Was blown away by the dueling solo and sheer speed. Orion was the first metallica song I learned on the bass guitar And justice for all couldn't quite push out the four horseman One - I just never get tired of it even after all these years
1:34 - I was glad to hear you say this. As good as a small handful of post-'80s tracks may be, nothing can touch the first quartet of albums (and the $5.98 EP). (BTW, "Battery" is the opener on MoP.)
Yep, I noted that above. For some reason I wrote down 'Battery' as an honorable mention on both those albums, but 'Blackened' was the one I was referencing there...my mind went blank so I just kept on going. It happens! LOL
@@neugey There's actually plenty of folks who have commented and listed songs from that album. I decided to just do original tunes here for them, but I actually like that album quite a bit.
Saw them live a year ago, it was a killer show. No doubts, Metallica is my one of my favourites! Here's my opinion! 10. Moth Into Flame 9. One 8. The Day That Never Comes 7. Nothing Else Matters 6. For Whom The Bell Tolls 5. Master Of Puppets 4. Fade To Black 3. Spit Out The Bone 2. The Unforgiven HM: Seek & Destroy, Creeping Death, Orion, To Live Is To Die, St. Anger. 1. Halo On Fire
I just threw this together rapidly and now I'm gonna watch and probably change my mind on a few LOL: 1) Fade to Black 2) Welcome Home Sanitarium 3) Am I Evil? 4) Creeping Death 5) Harvester of Sorrow 6) Master of Puppets 7) Fight Fire With Fire 8) Nothing Else Matters 9) For Whom the Bell Tolls 10) And Justice For All HM Whiplash, Disposable Heroes, One, Dyers Eve, The Unforgiven, Sad But True, Hero of the Day, Dirty Window, The Day that Never Comes
My sentiments are exactly the same on the Black album and beyond... I can embrace that the five MTV tracks off that album were my introduction to Metallica, (just after it's release)... But a year later I heard Ride the Lightning, on an old cassette from a new friend I met on the school bus. He didn't even have the case, but I already knew what the cover looked like from the metal mags I'd buy. I was only 12, but still knew (right when I first heard that ironic intro to Fight Fire with Fire) that the old stuff was the best!! Getting my first guitar a year later (and trying to learn all their stuff) further confirmed this, lol. No particular order...but my top 10 would definitely have to be pulled from these ones I've listed. I can at least say that Fight Fire with Fire and Ride the Lightning would both have to be at the top of my list, considering their neo-classical guitar solos with the harmony-lead overdubs. Interesting that you mention Kill 'Em All as your favorite in regards to Kirk's leads... For me it'd have to be Ride the Lightning, based on the aforementioned tracks. Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) Fight Fire with Fire Ride the Lightning Trapped Under Ice The Call of Ktulu Battery Master of Puppets The Thing That Should Not Be Disposable Heroes Leper Messiah Orion Blackened ...And Justice for All One To Live is to Die Dyers Eve
10: Invisible Kid (yes a St. Anger song, it's great though I think.) 9. My friend of Misery 8. No Remorse 7. Fade to Black 6. Call of Ktulu 5. Master of Puppets 4. Orion 3. The House Jack Built 2. To Live is to die 1. Fixxxer (yes a Reload song!)
Great vid about one of my all time favorite bands. I totally agree that their best stuff is on the first 4 albums. I don't dislike the rest of their discography, but they aren't collections of perfection like the first 4...especially Justice which is my absolute favorite. I really love the ...And Justice For Jason version that a fan added bass to.
1-The Unforgiven 2-Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 3-The Four Horsemen 4-Don’t Tread On Me 5-One 6-Battery 7-The Thing That Should Not Be 8-Disposable Heroes 9-Fight Fire With Fire 10-Ride The Lightning

My only complaint about Fad To Black is it is too damn short. That guitar at the end should go for about an hour or two longer. Well, maybe not that long but I never tire of that guitar at the end.

I've always thought if they combined the best tracks from Load and Reload it would be a pretty decent album
Agree. I'd actually put Outlaw Torn on my to 10 list, or even in the top 5.
I've always like load and reload
@@yapfloptheunquenched1452 I thought the same exact thing. Each album has quite a few throwaways for me which is why I don’t regard it so high. But I also think those albums don’t deserve the hate they get.
Spit Out The Bone from Hardwired is so underrated, such a bad ass tune. Ride the Lightning is my favorite Tallica' album but Spit Out The Bone may be my favorite song of theirs. Top 3 at least
And Justice is my fav album, too. Master is a very close 2nd, but I love And Justice!!
1) Battery
2) And Justice For All
3) Damage, Inc.
4) Ride The Lightning
5) Trapped Under Ice

4. Master of Puppets
5. Ride the Lightning
6. Blackened
7. Hit the Lights
8. Fade to Black
9. And Justice For All
10. Damage Inc
Very off the cuff list but the Top 3 songs, in varying order depending on day, are my 3 favs by the band.
3 - Sad, But True (My favorite from The Black Album)
4 - The Four Horsemen
5 - Creeping Death
6 - Wherever I May Roam
7 - Fixxer - Easily the most underrated Metallica song and the best (IMO) from Re-Load
8 - Outlaw Torn - Also underrated and this would be my favorite song from Load
9 - For Whom the Bell Tolls
10 - Whiplash - This was the song that got me to buy my first Metallica album when I heard it on Tony Hawk's Underground 2
Honorable Mentions:

No Remorse
Ride the Lightning
Escape
Call of Cthulu (I love it, but I like Orion more)

The Unforgiven
Nothing Else Matters
Of Wolf and Man
Bleeding Me (Also a gem from Load)
Fuel
Memory Remains if you removed that "NANANANA" part, ruins the song for me.
Where the Wild Things Are (Probably my second favorite from Re-Load)
P.S. I included nothing from Justice for All because I've never really been all that impressed with it.
For Whom The Bell Tolls is their greatest moment for me...Sx🎸🔥🎸

This list could change next week lol, I have a hard time choosing just 10.
I've always loved "Hero Of The Day." I'm probably in the minority here, lol.
I’m pretty late but I really love all eras of Metallica, through stylistic changes and the works. Load and Reload are excellent albums. Never understood the hate for them.
Off the top of my head:
Bleeding Me
Until It Sleeps
King Nothing
Low Man’s Lyric
Hero Of The Day
Memory Remains
Fixxxer
Slither
Unforgiven II
The House That Jack Built
Prince Charming
The Outlaw Torn
Carpe Diem Baby
All of these are excellent and I won’t be convinced otherwise. I’m sure I’m forgetting some other favorites but anyone who didn’t give them a chance after Justice can go kick rocks. Their songwriting is still objectively good.
Hero of the day is amazing!
@@HypeWrecks
You are right load and ReLoad are excellent albums you are so right!
@@metallicaopinionz lol
10 The Unforgiven trilogy tied
9 Prince Charming (starts “safe” and unravels with a great close)
8 Battery
7 Enter Sandman
6 The Four Horsemen
5 Sad But True (first song I ever heard by them- didn’t even know what the words were when I was five years old but I still tried to sing along!)
4 The Outlaw Torn
3 Now That We’re Dead (this is easily the most fun Metallica has ever had on a song. It was the first time in a long time that a first listen made me go YEEEEEESSSS and do a goddamn backflip)
2 The God That Failed (visceral, ethereal, evocative, and a good headbanger)
1 Bleeding Me. Full stop
I can get behind pretty much every one of your choices, but I don't get Now That We're Dead. Way too long, has cheesy lyrics, James' voice is also too cheerful. I only dig Kirk's solo on it.
I have to say that Spit Out The Bone enters in my top 10
Cliff Burton; one of my favourite sonic artists, inspired my own arts/music, and growing up as a 1980s teenager in the SFBA. 🎶
Metallica was my favorite band , a 5 year period, like Pete days, 87-81, I first bought RIDE THE LIGHTNING and i was awestruck..the heavy riffage. Was my new favorite band.
1) ONE
2) Fade to Black
3) Blackened
4) Master of Puppets
5) Four Horsemen
My favorites change all the time but right now it would probably be
1. Fade To Black

1. Fade To Black for me too.
I knew when you were describing your #1 & 2 what they were going to be. Very similar, but Fade To Black did it better I think and 1st. Ride the Lighning is my favorite album far and away.
Creeping Death
Ride the Lightning
Fade to Black
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Fight Fire with Fire
The Thing That Should Not Be
Leper Messiah
Master of Puppets
Disposable Heroes
Honorable Mentions: The Call of Ktulu and Orion (only left them out of top ten because they are instrumentals)
And...Fade to Black only ranks so high for the long guitar lead that ends the song.
In chronological order

It’s impossible to pick 10 top songs from Metallica’s first four albums because it’s all pretty damn good. I love it all, including the $5.98 ep. An easier top 10 for me would be my favorites from their Post-80s catalog.

A bit sick of the master of puppets song, but It gets pushed way up the list because of that amazing mid section and I nearly broke my wrist trying to play it on guitar with only down picks
Fight fire with fire is the first metallica song I heard. Was blown away by the dueling solo and sheer speed.
Orion was the first metallica song I learned on the bass guitar
And justice for all couldn't quite push out the four horseman
One - I just never get tired of it even after all these years
Great #1 pick song Pete that is a fantastic beautiful song fade to black
1:34 - I was glad to hear you say this. As good as a small handful of post-'80s tracks may be, nothing can touch the first quartet of albums (and the $5.98 EP).
(BTW, "Battery" is the opener on MoP.)
Yep, I noted that above. For some reason I wrote down 'Battery' as an honorable mention on both those albums, but 'Blackened' was the one I was referencing there...my mind went blank so I just kept on going. It happens! LOL
I'm surprised no one has listed a Garage Days EP song yet. Yes I know they were covers, but some of them were ripping!
@@neugey There's actually plenty of folks who have commented and listed songs from that album. I decided to just do original tunes here for them, but I actually like that album quite a bit.
Saw them live a year ago, it was a killer show. No doubts, Metallica is my one of my favourites! Here's my opinion!

The black album is an hour of solid great music
Leave out the "great" part and I agree.
It's an hour of solid music, not much more.

My only complaint about Fad To Black is it is too damn short. That guitar at the end should go for about an hour or two longer. Well, maybe not that long but I never tire of that guitar at the end.

Not that it is a top ten song, but I´ve always felt that No leaf Clover is somewhat a forgotten Metallica song. I still listen to it now and then.
