Welcome to Pan The Organizer, where you and I work together to help you improve different aspects of your life!
Cleaning your washing machine (also called washer in some countries) will help improve the performance of your washer while removing gunk, odors, mold and mildew.
For FRONT LOAD washing machines:
1) Add 2 cups (one full box) of baking soda in the washing machine.
2) Run the longest and hottest cycle possible.
3) Add 2 cups of white vinegar (with 5-10 drops of lavender essential oil) to the washing machine.
4) Run the longest and hottest cycle possible.
For TOP LOAD washers:
1) Fill your washer with hot water.
2) Add 1 quart (32 oz, or 1 liter) of chlorine bleach to the water.
3) Start the highest, largest capacity cycle and let it run for 15 minutes.
4) After 15 minutes, stop the cycle and let the mixture soak for 1 hour.
5) After 1 hour, restart the cycle and let it finish.
6) Restart steps 1 to 5 but with 1 quart of white vinegar (32 oz, or 1 liter).
If you follow these quick and easy steps, your washing machine will thank you and your clothes will smell much better! Plus you'll lower the risks of getting mold and mildew that could have harmful effects on your family's health!

OMG! My washer is 20 years old and I never knew it had a filter. Black stuff was literally caked on hard as rock. Bonus though, I did find a quarter in there.

I had to replace the circuit board about 10 - 12 years ago. I can't imagine that would be because of the filter though.
Atom Azersky My Whirlpool washer and dryer are 32 years old! They have never given me a problem. (Now that I said it, they will probably break down.) Didn’t know about a filter, I’m not gonna touch it now, but I will run the baking soda and vinegar through. I looked at new machines a couple of years ago because I kept thinking they would be breaking down any minute. When I said to the salesman I’ve had the machines for 30 years, he said well, these new ones won’t last anywhere near that long!
Pan... you should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for this video... I have it as one of my favorites and revisit it every year when I need to perform this maintenance. God Bless you Pan!!

I love my washer! Had never had one like this before. When the grunge smell came the first time I did so many things I thought would fix it. Nothing helped. Ran into a video that was so incredibly done, step by step, with pictures. I'm an old lady, the pics helped. Now I have a routine for cleaning and I do use the Afresh tablets and wipes. These are such great washers and. On the storage pedestals, perfect for older women and even young children learning to do laundry.

I've been doing the baking soda and vinegar every few months for years now , and cleaning the dispenser tray but I had no idea about cleaning the filter at the bottom or the rubber door gasket liner. I've learned something new today.

Old vid, but something important that you missed: On most front-loaders like that Samsung, grunge can build up on the panel above the dispenser trays. When you pull the tray out to clean it, be sure to look up on the inside of the opening for mold and/or grunge. That's where the water comes into the trays, and if it's grungy, it can add grunge to your clothes, and can plug up the valves, preventing the detergent, etc. from being properly dispensed. A wet toothbrush is usually the solution.

After finding stains on certain clothing, I decided it was time to clean my LG washing machine. I started with just vinegar, but now will go back and do the baking soda, including a toothbrush method that you suggested. So glad I found this video, and thank you for your time in doing so.

Great video. I run a UK detergent company and we were looking for a good vid to point our customers towards. Great. One thing we do get about 5% of time with new customers saying the wash is not great or a bit pongy. We found, it's nearly always a blocked pump filter, and we say clean that every month after. Hope that helps a bit.

My son's Miele element burnt out after only 4 years and when he took it out it was full of limescale and congealed soap - we will definitely be doing your cleaning method from now on thanks.
I always wipe my washer out after a wash especially the door seal hence no mould & no black marks on the rubber and my washer is in perfect condition for a 10yrs old washer. I will try the baking soda & vinegar though just to help clean the outlet pipe thank you
Definitely a MUST to clean your washer regularly. Another tip is the more humid your climate, the more frequently you'll want to clean your washer. Nobody likes moldy/mildewy smelling clothes! Leave that door open!

If the door and the opening for the washing powder and fabric softener are correct, the accumulation of water from the washing machine can run better and dry. But I clean the wire every day.

Recently some "colour catcher" cloths got stuck in the bottom bit, and caused a lot of mildew, even though I had cleaned my washing machine recently. Why did I buy that?! It's best to stick to simple good old fashioned tips & methods that actually work.

Better to clean the washing machine BEFORE doing your blankets,....they will smell much better. TIP....Use 2 capfuls of ZOFLORA Concentrated Disinfectant to your cleaning process....makes the machine smell beautiful.

I’m so thankful that you just popped up on my recommendation list. New fan here! I’ve been trying everything I read to rid us of the smell to no avail AND I leave the door open. Hot muggy climates have issues all their own that this north-westerner never had to be concerned with. Maybe this will help me not want to replace my front loading washer!

Also clean around that rubber flange on the door, if its a front loading machine. Once it's nice and clean, just wipe it out dry after you've finished your washing. And as Pan says, leave the door ajar. (However, that only works if you don't have small animals, and small children running around. Cats...aren't always that smart...)

Change to powder detergent. Liquid detergents don't remove odour or sweat from clothes effectively. Use at least 100g of powder detergent in each cycle. I switched to powder because my clothes weren't coming out clean as well.

You need to pour that in via the soap tray to clean the gunk mix of soap+ clothes softener that's built up in the tube connecting to the washing tub. This can be the source of a red light alarm.
