Add a cup of vinegar to your wash to eliminate odours from clothes, like those worn at the gym. Keeps your front-loader smelling good. It also softens the clothes, no need for fabric softener. Keep your front-loader door slightly open once you're done washing, prevents the odours from forming inside.

Loving these clear instructions. I’ve just done the first wash with the baking powder and now on to the vinegar wash. The lowest time with hottest wash on mine is 1hr and 22mins. So that’s slightly annoying. Can I do the vinegar and baking soda at the same time or do they cancel each other out?
I think it would be disastrous to run both simultaneously. Refer to any high school baking soda and vinegar volcano science experiment. Plus the advantage of running two cycles is that the hot water and baking soda are abrading and softening the dirt and grime, then the second load is able to clear away any residue left and sanitize now the majority is scrubbed away.
Like he showed, leave the door open afterwards. Totally prevents mould/odours. I also stuff a kitchen towel into the door rubber at the bottom (with half the towel sticking out). This draws up moisture which then evaporates. Also, put soda crystals in with the detergent to help reduce limescale build-up. My AEG front loader is 25 years old and still going strong.
Hey, fyi, for when you open the bottom door go slowly decreasing the size of the tube (slowly push it inwards and hold it looking down)for when you unscrew the other part and you will see how much less water it spills and how much more you collect, you know its done when it burps
Make sure when you re-insert the lower filter, that it is completely tight and not leaking. Not once, but twice I have had water leaking into the basement because the gasket wasn't seated properly.
As I was cleaning the softener dispenser in my top loader I made a mess. Now I'm looking into how to wash the whole machine and this is really helpful!
Great video. One recommendation. After pulling the detergent drawer out and cleaning it, and before putting it back, I use a microfiber towel to clean and sanitize the detergent drawer cavity.
Thank you soo much ,Pan the Organizer. My washing machine has never been cleaned ,i’m planning to call for service ,luckily i’ve seen your video . I can save money and learn how to do it myself . God Bless you And your family! 🙏🏻❤️
Just came across your video and it’s a godsend. I did t know you should clean your washing machine once a month… These types of videos have really helped with my adulting development haha. Thank you 🙏
Thank you! Don't forget to clean the space that holds the detergent tray! I just looked at mine and it was full of mildew and some kind of biofilm. My landlord replaced my old top-load with a brand new front-load and I absolutely hate it, but this video will help me learn to cope with the change. I've never had such disgusting issues with a top-loader washing machine. Now, I think I'll run bleach through the new washer every week.
@@CombustibleLint bleach too frequently might eat the rubber gaskets. But I agree. I'm embarrassed my clothes smell so bad fresh from the dryer. These front loaders suck!
NICE tutorial! For hose draining, I use a plastic tray that has a top edge _low_ enough to allow _complete_ drainage. This results in not having to deal with any further draining/spillage when the filter is removed. 😉
I’ve had my machine for 7 years. Never knew about any of this. I would just clean the tray and wipe the rubber seal. The other day i noticed a bad smell and a washing load did not smell fresh. After doing the vinegar method my smell went away. I followed through with the baking soda tip just to be sure. I really appreciate the video!
I love the maintenance series because most people aren't trained to do that and this is good information. Can you do one regarding how would you maintain and deodorize your shop-vac?
Thanks Dave! The main advantage I like of front loaders is their efficiency in water consumption and electricity. But yeah top loaders don't have the odor issues as much.
I’ve been using front loaders for 20 years without odor issue. All that’s necessary is to not keep the front door closed. Most models come with a built in cam to keep the door cracked open a few inches unless you physically close it. Not only do they clean better and have many more load options but they use FAR less water and electricity.
You don't get top loaders in Europe or the UK.... Odours are only a problem if you keep the door shut between cycles and leave the soap drawer open... air circulation is the key
@@cruisinguy6024 We still have our original Maytag Washer & Dryer, they are 27 year old and with 2 boys now in their late teens it got & gets used daily. Never had any smell issues and we just wipe them clean once a month. To date I have spent $300 in minor repairs (belts, sensor).
A top tip is to leave the the dispenser tray slightly open and the washing machine door after every use also. Never mind he mentioned it. Ignore above message lol
i use a scoop of baking soda with every load of laundry and use white vinegar for the fabric softener and have never had a stinky machine. i always empty the tray after every load and leave the front door open as well.
Thank you so much! As a mother with very young children, my daughter often pee on her bed so we havr to wash often her blankets, howerver after a while, since a few days there is now a smell in the washer bur also because it was never clean since we moved in. I can now get rid of odours and know how to clean it each months.
Found the old version of this video, and it inspired me to clean my washing machine which has had an iffy kind of smell to it.. The commercially awailable washing machine cleaning solutuons here in Norway never did a damn bit of good But even without any lavender or tea-tree oil i could not semse any iffy smell when I had run tjroug the teo cycles at 90'c The dispener drawer was a nasty thing, a thogh as nauls yellow/brownish residue had built up, i (wrongly) thought that id was dammage from the washing powdee, but after watching the old video realised that it was residue, i siaked the affected parts n white winegar and a bit of hot water.. and now the dispenser drawer is clean enogh to eat my dinner from 😂 Thanks Pan, you are truly inspirational🙂
A word of caution, vinegar is caustic. Use it only occasionally. Same with baking soda. They will deteriorate your rubber seals and other non-metal parts inside the washer. So using them for regular clothes washing is not recommended.
Question1: Does one add the baking soda to the drum and the vinegar to the detergent drawer and run the Hot water clean cycle together, or is this two different cycles? One cycle with the baking soda, then a second cycle with the vinegar? Question 2: Can I substitute TSP for baking soda? Thank You for a helpful video. Most of my mold build-up happens in the bottom of the door gasket (Black Mold) and I believe this is where the odors come from?
Two separate cycles. If you were to combine them in one cycle, that would create an unwanted chemical reaction. I don’t know if you can substitute the baking soda for TSP.
Merci beaucoup ! Gonna try that today + drain the water at every cycle to get rid of all the dirt. By the way, finishing the process with the coldest cycle might help avoiding crystallisation due to hot water
After watching this video, i went and looked at my front load washer and pulled that gasket back and nearly threw up! I’m embarrassed by the amount of mold back there! Fairly new washer too and I always leave the door open after a wash. Starting this process now. I’m a clean freak too, so this doesn’t set well with me lol Appreciate the helpful video as always, Pan!
Couple of other important things to check- the outlet pipe, make sure there is a straight 2 or 3 degrees tilt towards the drain as crud will collectin the outletpipe. I flush my outlet pipe out once a month, lastly, I've back fed my machine with a garden hose draining all the gunk out through the small washing machine drain pipe at the front as shown, its crazy how much crap came out, I also rotate the drum at the same time. I use a Fairy Platinum dishwasher tablet as this has strong ingredients and degreasers to break down biological muck from inside the drum on drum clean mode (90 degrees Celsius). Comes out crisp and clean every time 👌
In case you ever see this comment - can you tell me how you do that- back feed your washer with a garden hose. What do you attach the hose to? Sorry if it’s a silly question, but I googled and I’m not seeing anything that sounds like what you describe.
@@foursixquebec disconnect the outlet/drain hose, and put a garden hose into the drain/ outlet. Then, at the front of the machine there is an emergency drain with a small pipe and a cover to access the pump. Fit another hose to the small pipe at the front and run the hose out of the door into the garden or somewhere outside. Turn on the tap and watch the water flow through the outlet and through the machine and out of the small emergency drain.
Adding fun guy? I am the fun guy. Also for anybody who speaks 'traditional' English, baking soda is called "bicarbonate of soda" (basically transliterated the same from French). "White vinegar" is "spirit vinegar" or "distilled (white) vinegar" in the US. I hope this translation helps any of my non-Canadian speaking friends.
Really helpful thank you! I’m a college student and have never cleaned a washing machine before and my one definitely needed it! Learned a lot, thanks!
If you have the dispenser tray out, it pays to clean inside the opening as well, I had to use an old washing machine once and inside there was a veritable soap stalactite
What about the vinegar and/or tea tree oil damaging rubber washers and such in your machine? I've heard these can damage your inner parts of the washer.
I would suggest one minor tweak to your formula. Swap out the vinegar for citric acid. If your washer has limescale in it and your cleaning process does not remove all of it, that vinegar smell will linger for quite some time. Citric acid is nearly orderless and will not leave any lingering odors. This is especially true if you are cleaning things like coffee makers, dishwashers, tankless water heaters, etc. Keep up the good work Pan!
Great job! Thank you for the video, it was clear and easy to understand. Just wondering couldn't I put the vinegar in the dispenser and the baking soda in the tub in one cycle instead of the two-step? Thanks
I wonder if you could extend the life of the rubber gaskets with some type of rubber protectant? Also I was wondering if you have a vapor steamer to steam behind the rubber gaskets and other nooks and crannies to kill any trapped odors and loosen any debris?
Gasket is made or EPDM rubber and should last the life of the machine . They go discoloured and smell through poor machine maintenance and low temperature washing without biological detergent or continuing using fast or rapid cycles .
Thank you for this video, very clear and helpful. I had been doing some of these things but not all! I am not able to pull out the filter on the bottom, even though I had cleaned it out before. It seems to be stuck and does not come out. Any suggestions??? Thanks.
Pan - a quick question for you please! For the 50/50 washing machine maintenance cleaning mix, is it 1 cup of dishwashing liquid & 1 cup vinegar? I assume there must be a best amount because the specific quantity of 10 essential oil drops.
When it comes to cleaning out the filter behind the little door. Not all washer have such an easy access to it. Sometimes I've had to use a hex bit to take the cover off, it's not always easy.
I think I’ll stick to my top loader machine. I leave the lid open always when done with a wash. I use the machine cleaning tablets 1-2 times a month (we wash everyday). Maintaining that rubber gasket is not for me. I keep my machine cleaned and I do wash my towels and bedding in hot water. I also use the least amount of HE liquid detergent to wash clothes. And I never ever use liquid fabric softener.
That’s how I found u years ago. I was looking up ways to clean washing machines and other items. This is a great update!!!!. I also use Vinegar and downy soap to clean the bathrooms.
Ive done all the things you have mentioned but I have been intermittently getting still very foul odor smells like sewage. Whenever I do the washer cleaning tabs the smell is typically gone for 1 week to 2 weeks and comes back right away. Aside from disassembling it I dont know what else to do.
My reply is late, but are you still having the issue? If so, I was going to suggest contacting your county/district utility company. In the past, I've smelled sulphur in my shower and there wound up being a clog in our water line. The utility company came out and unclogged it and the smell went away.
Thank you for the detailed video! Instead of running two cycles with baking soda and vinegar each, can we not just run one cycle with baking soda and vinegar together?
Hi! I cleaned my filter and everything was great! But my filter won’t close all the way now and water gushed out of it. I was able to tighten it back up but there’s still a leak. Is there any advice you could give to put the filter in more securely?
Many washers on the 2nd floor sit on or in a pan with drain that is designed to drain if your washer ever leaks. Some of these systems were plumbed into your dwv sewer system. When the trap dries out (and it will) sewer gas escapes up into your washer and makes you think the washer is the source. It isn't. Put some water (1 gallon) in the pan underneath your washer and the trap will fill and your problem will disappear.
@@PanTheOrganizer every time I dry my microfiber towels in the dryer there’s always some kind of hair, string, or lint on it. I physically clean the dryer with White vinegar and a microfiber towel before drying my microfiber towels , but some how I still get stuff on my towels.

Recently separated so I'm learning how to do my own maintenence and repairs. Anyway... do top loaders have a gunk trap as well? I have an older Kenmore top loader. Thanks!!
Thanks for the video. I would like to clarify, if i should pour vinegar and baking soda at the same time? I mean soda contains alkali, vinegar - is a weak acid. From my chemistry lessons I learned that alkali and acid is directly opposite. Once you put it together it neutralizes each other. Could anyone explain it to me please, because I've seen this kind of thinking over the internet multiple times. However, in one website I've seen an instruction "take vinegar or baking soda". Should I use vinegar and baking soda in two different washes? Thanks.
@@PanTheOrganizer I did a search on Google for how to clean a washer. I actually first watched the one you made five years ago. Later I wanted to verify the amount of baking soda to use, and stumbled on your recent version. I actually have one other question. Do you, or others, experience what I do after doing the baking soda cycle - that there is a significant amount of little bits of black stuff left in the washer? This happens even if I've cleaned the washer regularly.
Very helpful video thank you ! I have a Samsung Serie 9 QuickDrive with an auto detergent and softener container, which means I put once in a while softener and detergent and the machine takes the amount it needs for the load. So I can’t put the vinegar there cause I already cleaned it not long ago, can I put the vinegar inside with the bicarbonate? Thank you xx
Thank you. This cleaning method was not even mentioned or suggested in my washing machine manual. Thank you for this valuable information. I just subscribed to your channel. Thanks again.
@@PanTheOrganizer It was by accident. I just bought a front load washing machine a few months ago. The instruction was to clean the filter every two months but have never done it since I bought it. I wipe the washing machine door and the rubber ring after each use. I just do it on my own. It's just too bad that the instruction on the manual was very limited and no illustrations either. I was thankful that I found you because your video answered the questions I had in mind. The cleaning solution you suggested to use is environmentally friendly and economical as well. Thank you.
No as that would be quite difficult to film. You can take an old toothbrush or microfiber towel, with a bit of bleach, and scrub, then take a microfiber towel damp with just water to neutralize any residue and you should be good.
No unfortunately, as it depends on your budget, your preferences, etc. I have had experience with Samsung in the past, and now LG, and never had issues with either or.
Hi... How do I remove stubborn build up in the rubber gasket if the vinegar solution doesn't remove it... Thanks for this useful process, I'm very pedantic over my laundry and wouldnt want my machine to just accumulate gunk and I also wash items that my cats use so this process is exactly what I need!!!
I saw the thumbnail and said “he looks just like Pan” and sure enough after teaching me a whole lot about car detailing he’s got me learning about washer care 😂❤❤ Thank you Pan!
Thank you for the tutorial. I did this because our washing machine has been very smelly, particularly at the beggining of the cycle. When I opened the filter a whole lot of water came out (despite of having used it like a week ago for the last time) and the water was extremely stinky. I was sure the filter would be super dirty, but it was actually clean!!! now I am afraid we might have a bigger issue with the machine. Do you know what might be happening?

Hey, fyi, for when you open the bottom door go slowly decreasing the size of the tube (slowly push it inwards and hold it looking down)for when you unscrew the other part and you will see how much less water it spills and how much more you collect, you know its done when it burps
Make sure when you re-insert the lower filter, that it is completely tight and not leaking. Not once, but twice I have had water leaking into the basement because the gasket wasn't seated properly.
I just watched your 5 year old version of this the other day. Videos have come a long way in 5 years Pan!
Thanks!! Yeah that video went viral with 4 million views so far!
What really puts me to shame is that we already have everything needed for the task at home. Brilliant!
Greetings from Switzerland
Your washing machine will thank you! Cheers from Canada!
As I was cleaning the softener dispenser in my top loader I made a mess. Now I'm looking into how to wash the whole machine and this is really helpful!
Glad I could help!
Great video. One recommendation. After pulling the detergent drawer out and cleaning it, and before putting it back, I use a microfiber towel to clean and sanitize the detergent drawer cavity.
Great point!
Thank you soo much ,Pan the Organizer. My washing machine has never been cleaned ,i’m planning to call for service ,luckily i’ve seen your video . I can save money and learn how to do it myself . God Bless you And your family! 🙏🏻❤️
You are so welcome!
Just came across your video and it’s a godsend. I did t know you should clean your washing machine once a month… These types of videos have really helped with my adulting development haha. Thank you 🙏
My pleasure Kate! How did you discover my channel?
Great tip!
Glad I could help!
I love the maintenance series because most people aren't trained to do that and this is good information. Can you do one regarding how would you maintain and deodorize your shop-vac?
Thanks Rey!
very good
Do we do the vinegar and baking soda on the same wash, or separate (40+ year old here lol)
Front loaders are much more prone to odors. I always opt for top loaders. Great video regardless!
@@cruisinguy6024 I leave the door wide open and the soap dish open after every wash
Great advice. My washing machine smelled so good after I followed your advice. Keep up the good job. 👌🏾
Great to hear!
A top tip is to leave the the dispenser tray slightly open and the washing machine door after every use also.
Never mind he mentioned it. Ignore above message lol
Thank you so much for your video! I bought a used washer and it has a horrible mildewed smell.
I’ll clean it out the way you showed in your video.
Your washer will thank you. 😁👍🏻
i use a scoop of baking soda with every load of laundry and use white vinegar for the fabric softener and have never had a stinky machine. i always empty the tray after every load and leave the front door open as well.
Thank you so much! As a mother with very young children, my daughter often pee on her bed so we havr to wash often her blankets, howerver after a while, since a few days there is now a smell in the washer bur also because it was never clean since we moved in. I can now get rid of odours and know how to clean it each months.
So happy I found you!! You’re precise and easy to understand. I shared with my family and subscribed ❤
Thanks Pan!
Thanks for the feedback!
Found the old version of this video, and it inspired me to clean my washing machine which has had an iffy kind of smell to it..
The commercially awailable washing machine cleaning solutuons here in Norway never did a damn bit of good
But even without any lavender or tea-tree oil i could not semse any iffy smell when I had run tjroug the teo cycles at 90'c
The dispener drawer was a nasty thing, a thogh as nauls yellow/brownish residue had built up, i (wrongly) thought that id was dammage from the washing powdee, but after watching the old video realised that it was residue, i siaked the affected parts n white winegar and a bit of hot water.. and now the dispenser drawer is clean enogh to eat my dinner from 😂
Thanks Pan, you are truly inspirational🙂
Thanks for the feedback!
Love the video! Very well explained & informative! I wish sales people would show how to do this.
Thanks so much!
Merci beaucoup ! Gonna try that today + drain the water at every cycle to get rid of all the dirt. By the way, finishing the process with the coldest cycle might help avoiding crystallisation due to hot water
Good stuff Pan! We’ve also been using Lysol Laundry Sanitizer, and Odo-ban in our washer, with great results!
Good to know!
After watching this video, i went and looked at my front load washer and pulled that gasket back and nearly threw up! I’m embarrassed by the amount of mold back there! Fairly new washer too and I always leave the door open after a wash. Starting this process now. I’m a clean freak too, so this doesn’t set well with me lol
Appreciate the helpful video as always, Pan!
Glad it helped
Comes out crisp and clean every time 👌
Good tips!
Hello , ive done this a few times do you have a video on how to remove rubber around, mine is very mouldy and it will not go away? Any tips
My pleasure. Thanks for the positive feedback!
I just got done watching this and learned a lot as always!! Thank You! Enjoy the weekend.
Glad it was helpful!
If you have the dispenser tray out, it pays to clean inside the opening as well, I had to use an old washing machine once and inside there was a veritable soap stalactite
Thank you so much for this very useful video Pan! You made an undesirable task look very easy.
Glad it was helpful! Your washer will thank you!
It worked, thank you! I tried commercial cleaners and they didn't get the bad smell out... this eliminated all the stink ^_^
You're welcome!! How did you discover my channel by the way?

Helpful and straight to point, thanks a lot.
👍🏻
I got white wine vinegar will this do or do i need to use specifically white vinegar?
Thank you! This was fantastic, so helpful and you explain everything so clearly. I am off to clean mine now. ❤ xxx
My pleasure!
What about the vinegar and/or tea tree oil damaging rubber washers and such in your machine? I've heard these can damage your inner parts of the washer.
Thanks for this! My washer works long hard days and it’s beginning to smell like a toilet. I’ll grab some stuff from your links 👍
Cool! Your washer will thank you!
Thank you for this! Just bought a house but no one cleaned the washer for 5 years and they used to have a dog so it's a lot of work!
You are so welcome!
Using lemon salt inside the washing machine is excellent
Your explanation is very nice. Good luck
Thanks!
Yes , 303 Protectant , clean them first before applying . It comes in a liquid and also wipes .
Gasket is made or EPDM rubber and should last the life of the machine .
They go discoloured and smell through poor machine maintenance and low temperature washing without biological detergent or continuing using fast or rapid cycles .
Hi I only have cold settings 😢 will the baking soda.still work?
Simple and concise!
Amazing tutorial🙂
Thanks Ruben!
😁👍🏻
Ive done all the things you have mentioned but I have been intermittently getting still very foul odor smells like sewage. Whenever I do the washer cleaning tabs the smell is typically gone for 1 week to 2 weeks and comes back right away. Aside from disassembling it I dont know what else to do.
That’s annoying! I hope you’ve found a cost effective solution to the problem. All the best.
No as that would generate an unwanted chemical reaction.
I’m here because I’m a newly single after 25+ years 😂
4:30 vinaigrette also helps to fight calcium build up in places where water are hard.
I just use Truly Free non-toxic laundry machine cleaner. I literally throw the pouch in and run a load and it's good. Pretty cheap too
Just cleaned mine after watching your video 👍🏼 any tips for cleaning out lint & hair from the dry drum?
Your washer will thank you! I'm not sure I understand where the lint and hair is in your drum? You can't pick that up with a microfiber towel?
@@PanTheOrganizer every time I dry my microfiber towels in the dryer there’s always some kind of hair, string, or lint on it. I physically clean the dryer with White vinegar and a microfiber towel before drying my microfiber towels , but some how I still get stuff on my towels.

I agree, once a month. Especially since I often forget a load in the washing machine for a day or two. That moldy smell is awful.
you forget your washing for a day or two?............
I also add half a tube of Crest original…..further abrasive…..but the smell is awesome

Hi,
Thank you for your tips! Works a treat already and I haven’t even finished!
Now I’m not sure if I understood it correctly. By dishwasher liquid you mean this which you pour into dishwashing machine,( finish type of stuff right)? Not the dishwashing for hand wash (like dawn or fairy?) thank you in advance for your reply!
Would using lemon essential oils be fine?
This was a really good video. You did a really great job with this content. I love it!! I saw this & headed to my basement & went to town on my washer lol.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you . We have never washed our front loader washing machine, n will definitely start doing it now. The u beer rim is blackish from dirt or mould, can you advise how to get rid of it. The machine is working well
Looking forward to your advice

great video. The question about dawn dish soap with the vinegar, 1 cup each with 10 drops of lavender oil. Why does my mixture look much more cloudy than yours.
Thanks.
Hi, thanks for being thorough and explicit. One question: why not clean the washer with the baking soda and the vinegar during the same cycle?
Because that was generate an unwanted chemical reaction.
@@PanTheOrganizer Good to know- thank you!
My pleasure. How did you discover my channel by the way Laurel?

It was by accident. Thank you.
AWESOME! Thank you for an easy to follow and thorough tutorial, I will surely share it!

Thanks! Yes you could use that essential oil too.
Awesome! Going to try this now, do you have a video on removing the mould from the rubber gasket in the washing machine too?
No as that would be quite difficult to film. You can take an old toothbrush or microfiber towel, with a bit of bleach, and scrub, then take a microfiber towel damp with just water to neutralize any residue and you should be good.
Oh and when you say 50/50 dishwashing liquid, do you mean concentrated or dilluted mixed 50/50 with the vinegar?
Excellent as usual, do you have any recommendations on brand of washing machines?
No unfortunately, as it depends on your budget, your preferences, etc. I have had experience with Samsung in the past, and now LG, and never had issues with either or.
Thanks for a nice video. But, you did not address cleaning of the inlet filter?
Thank you for these tips. I hope research and development for washing machine companies create better machines.
Thanks for watching!
great tutorial, did that but also noticed when i removed detergent tray - inside the bay it was very dirty, any tips on how to clean this compartment?
A good brush, soapy water, and microfiber towel usually does the trick.
My LG washer recommends to run the tub cleaning every 30 cycles. For just me and my roomate it is usually every 3 months or so.
I saw the thumbnail and said “he looks just like Pan” and sure enough after teaching me a whole lot about car detailing he’s got me learning about washer care 😂❤❤ Thank you Pan!
Right on!
Perhaps get a service call from an appliance repair specialist near you. It's hard to troubleshoot things virtually unfortunately.
Hi how do you remove lints from your front loader washing machine??
