  • Hey guys! 👋 I get a ton of questions about front load washing machines. They work really well to keep your clothes clean but can sometimes trap water and create a mess. In this video I will show you how I perfectly clean a front load washing machine and keep it that way for years to come!

    Do this if you want to keep your tub/gasket clean: switch to old-fashioned powder detergent! I got this advice from my knowledgeable appliance sales person. Liquid and pod detergents are sticky (ever get some on your hands?) so they adhere to clothes/dirt. So, it sticks to the gasket and washer tub, too. Powder doesn't. After a robust cleaning, like what Brandon shows here, try the powder. Difference is night-n-day. Clothes are just as clean. We switched to powder for dishwasher, too. Same result. Give powder a shot (while they still sell it!) and you won't regret it!

      You can also check out laundry sheets (like Earth Breeze) which dissolve into soap when wet.

    6:30 Excellent tip for the discolored gasket, I gotta try that.
    My stacking front loaders save me space in my little apartment, but I look forward to having a top-loading washer again, one day.

    • @1AnimalWhisperer
      @1AnimalWhisperer 3 місяці тому +3

      Back when I was renting a condo (4 years ago) I had a top-loader stacking washer. So, they do exist!
      But, that might not help you, as you said it was an apartment, so you probably don't own the washer and dryer.
      Just on the off chance you do own it and want a top loader, I thought I would let you know they do make them. Mine was tiny. I could fit (with the recommended only 2/3rds full per load) a queen sheet set (fitted sheet, flat sheet and two pillow cases) in there, not sure how a king sheet set would have done, just to give you an idea of how small they can come. 😅

    When I found out I could take the whole tray out, I was delighted!
    But the build up within the rubber ring has me disgusted and no matter how many times I tried to clean it, the rubber seems to stay stained. Vinegar can only do so much but I gotta get the bleach out to tackle the mildew.
    We've made sure to do a clean cycle once a month ever since we got it, so it helps a little with the build up in the ring, but no where near enough to remove the mildew.
    Didn't know there was anything safe enough to remove mold and mildew in these washers, so thanks for mentioning about a product that could help.

    Unfortunately some of the new models no longer have a drain hose. I’ve found the plastic dustpan (from a dustpan and brush set) can be held at an angle under the filter as you unscrew it to catch the water. CAUTION only partially unscrew it, so you can screw it back up when your dustpan is full of water. Empty the dustpan and continue :)
    I have had success using gel bleach to remove mould from the rubber seal. I soak toilet tissue or a paper towel with the gel bleach and apply it like a poultice to the mould. It should stay in place for several hours as required. As mentioned in the video, the best remedy is to always let the seal dry out before closing the door.

    Also I have the same washing machine, that hose where you drain the pump will not drain if you pull it all of the way out. Push it back in slowly until you see it start to flow. And you should be good to take the filter out after that without as much mess.

      @@BadAllergies514 The only reason I have this is because my old Kenmore from loader finally got so loud that my GF was getting scared to be in the same room with it, and Ben's Appliance repair said that this particular problem wasn't worth fixing.
      This three month old Electrolux popped up for free on Craigslist, because it had been left outdoors to freeze, and was spewing water when reconnected.
      It was pretty funny. I spoke to the husband, and he said "I need it gone **today**". When I got there, he was still at work, so his wife greeted me. She explained through gritted teeth that they were remodeling their kitchen, and the washer was in the way. So the husband moved it to the patio in the dead of winter. "I told him it would freeze and break, but he wouldn't listen". LOLOL some dysfunction there 😆
      About $100 in parts and a couple of days of learning and thinking and I have a like-new Electrolux. But I wouldn't buy another just like this one.

    Great video. Just one thing ….I hope you didn’t miss the ‘ceiling’ of the space where the soap/powder tray sits. If you look up there, you’ll always find a tonne of black mould that’s always extra difficult to remove thoroughly. I usually use some spray bleach, a toothbrush, then I direct a water spray up there to rinse away as much of it as possible. I do this BEFORE I start the hot cleaning cycle - so that all of the loosened mould on the ‘ceiling’ gets rinsed away when the machine fills with water.

    Plumbers recommended that you do NOT put undiluted vinegar in the detergent dispenser. It can cause damage to the tubing/machine. If you must add vinegar they recommend that you add it directly to the drum where it will be diluted.
    The best way to avoid this is just maintenance. I take the detergent dispenser out after a load and dry it over the sink and then wipe out the machine as shown, leaving the door open.

    My tip would be for the people who use bleach to clean the washer, switch to 12% hydrogen peroxide a few cups. Peroxide works better on complex organisms like mold and mildew and is less harsh and corrosive on materials.
    I also use it as a spray with a tiny bit of soap for stick, occasionally spritzing the gasket and the sprayers at the top.

    My other tip is to take the entire detergent tray out after every use and place it upside down to drain inside the washer drum (make sure the washer door is always left open or ajar). I do this every time, and I never get gunk or build up in there. I also never use fabric softener and only use the minimum of detergent, because these will cause gross build up to form in there 👌

    • @sara_387
      @sara_387 5 днів тому

      Yes, same here.
      I take the entire detergent tray out after the last load for the day, and dry it out.
      After that I wipe out the door seal with a cotton wash cloth. And then I wedge a dry cotton wash cloth into the seal to keep it open. Then leave the door open.
      Front loaders also need much less detergent than the instructions say.

    Your washing machine has a tub clean mode, why didn't you use that versus what you chose of normal heavy load etc?

    Thank you for this video. Now maybe my washer won't smell.

    So, my husband does our laundry and my adult twins each do their own laundry. This is the first time we have owned a front loading washing machine and honestly had no idea what needed to be done to keep it clean. I recently had someone here to repair our refrigerator and I asked him to look at my washer if he could. It was then that I became aware of what a mess we had. The inside of our washer looks disgusting and I haven’t found anything to even make a dent in cleaning it. Do you think it’s a total loss? I have now made sure that my husband and kids are keeping the door open.

    The clog is somewhere in that outlet hose, that’s why most of it came out of the filter basket.

    Font loads will for sure give you a better wash. Just keep the door slightly ajar after use and you won’t run into the grossness 😂

      I wondered that. My machine never gets that bad but I do run my cleaning cloths through on 90⁰C

      I like to use Dawn but whatever dish soap you have available in your area will work!

    I have an LG very much like the one in the video but the detergent tray only goes half way back in I push the white thing in the middle to take it out but I can't reach it when it is halfway in to get it to return what am I doing wrong?

      My rental washing machine is the same - just moved in and couldn't get it out... turns out that I had to use significant force - push down really hard and pull the drawer out really hard at the *same time*. It was totally junked up with the detergent from the tenant prior.

    Our Electrolux front load washer does not have a door or anywhere to access the drain hose/filter. It’s also not listed in the user manual so we didn’t even know about this until your video! How big of a problem is that?!

    I noticed you didn't put the sink strainer in the sink so it can catch the gunk and other debris from the filter and the hose.

    I
    Leave my washer door and detergent door open between use
    Every month to 6 weeks use a 90oC cycle with dish cloths (gives them a good clean at the same time)
    Remove the filter, check for loose object and the pump impellor too that it moves freely
    Remove the detergent drawer, check for any mould above and below
    I use small amount of bleach (2 tablespoons) and a little washing up liquid (1 tablespoon), yes it foams, but not enough to cause an issue and I have NO issues with odour, stains, build up, residue or anything
    I do live in a soft water area of the UK, that may have a factor

    Sure wish my filter was easily accessible like this one. With mine ya got to pull out the machine, lay down and reach in underneath the drum. And my machine is so tightly stuffed inside a closet making it a pain to pull out.

    Oh my goodness, that machine was filthy! What in the world are these folks washing?? I have 9 dogs whose beds and blankets need washing frequently and the machine doesn't look anywhere near that bad. The first time I took that filter out...😳 yikes. It was so matted with dog fur, I'm surprised the machine was still operating. Tip: use a shallow foil oven pan to place under the machine when draining and removing the filter to catch the flood! Didn't realize the soap/bleach chamber was removable; thanks. We just LOVE watching your videos 💜

    • @sara_387
      @sara_387 5 днів тому

      Move if you can. Black mold is hazardous to your health.
      It should probably be treated professionally, and will come back if the underlying moisture/air flow issues are not resolved.
