Sorry if I missed you mentioning it, but one thing worth knowing with the intensity knobs both on EG and LFO if you hold "shift" when turning it you send send the 'cv' downwards rather than upwards (so you can send the filter dark then brighter on release for example). Particularly of interest on the sawtooth LFO as (I believe) it only goes upwards, whereas the other two cycle positive and negative. Opens up even more amazing sounds on this awesome Synth!
”You have an effects bonanza in your LFO.”
After watching these reviews, the Monologue feels like the analog synth equivalent of being in a Wild West saloon, taking out a pair of six shooters, and then yelling, “now dance!” at an adversary just prior to letting him have it.
By this point, I press "like" before video even starts. Keep it up, man
Thank you!
a stroke of genius from tatsuya takahashi
This is the first time in a long time I've heard a sound I've never heard before! This thing is RAD
“The ways... The many ways are many.”
Haha, that made me crack up. Seriously though, thanks so much for these in depth videos. I picked up a Monologue just yesterday, and as a newbie to synthesis, these videos really help me understand the instrument.
I've got both the Monologue and the Minilogue. What I love about those synths is that they are truly bringing something new to the table. The Monologue especially is a synth that still grows on me after every single use. Its architecture is absolutely brilliant. I can see how people might be sceptical, but it is actually an incredibly powerful instrument.
Am really enjoying my Monologue, thanks for your coverage. It's been a great introduction..
Regards
I'm glad to help!
I got one last Christmas. I'm a bass guitarist and a keyboard player ,but I never had a real synth, just multi keyboards with synth patches that could never be sound altered. I opened my Monologue out of the box maybe 3 times not really knowing what to do and that was after downloading the manual and quick guide. After seeing this video series that I'm probably gonna watch another 3 times (LOL) I'll probably be able to do something cool with it. Well done Automatic Gainsay!!!!
Incredibly dope overviews of the Korg Monologue! Watch this again to love it more
These are amazing videos! You've made me decide to keep my Monologue! One note - don't forget to let people know that the LFO can be synced to tempo!
I´m already drooling, and you didn't even got into the sequencer, wich was the main reason I got interested in this synth in the first place.
i haven't stoped playing with the lfo since i got it. amazing.
Thank you for making these videos!!!
arghhhh CAN'T WAIT FOR IT TO ARRIVE. just bought it because it was cheap and had a sequencer and sounded good. NOW I'M EVEN MORE EXCITED.
You helped sway me to buying this just waiting on it getting delivered now😄 love the videos very informative and easy to understand!!
Tony Ynot how do you like it so far? I’m torn between a couple different options.
Hey Marc! Thanks for all your superb videos! I just got the monologue and it is really a fun bit of kit. Very aggressive and got more functions than one might think. I still have a lot of exploring to do =)
Greets from Sweden
Hello, and thank you!
U can see how they took the best bits of the monotribe and made it way better. Like the lfo modes and envelope settings. Its all the same as the monotribe but with more routing options .. and no clicks :)
Love it Bro 👊💪🔥🔥🔥
Probably one of the most explorative videos on synth (experimenting with) parameters Ive seen and on a synth that on the face of it looks quite simple. Before watching your monologue playlists I had wanted a Blofeld. Now I want Blofeld and Monologue. Dare I watch any more of your vids.... :D
as an addendum has there been any updates to the monologues since this video - which i just see was last decade!! :D
The one shot mode on the LFO is a pretty good idea. They carried it over from the Monotribe, where it was even more welcome, considering the relatively limited functionality
Proper lfo
Korg you've shown your hand now so make bloody well sure that on the new addition that this lfo is added in multiples along with the extra voices, saturation and triple envelopes
Press Shift and turn an Intensity Knob = negative value
For both LFO and EG!
I talk about that in Part 10! :D
Sweet... amazing how such a small, "entry level" synth requires 10 (or more?) installments. Looking forward to your upcoming Monologue videos.
8:53 Marc, can you hear the high frequency during the "delay?" I think if you reduce the LFO intensity, then you'll hear the tone.
Okay, I'm just going to come out and say it: the LFO section has been the most interesting part of this synth, so far. I know the sequencer, etc. haven't been shown yet.
It is definitely one of my favorite parts. It's one of my favorite LFOs!
It's also National Pizza Day. Boom.
классное видео!
Can the LFO retrigger on each note on? I can't find where to activate this in the edit mode. I don't want to believe they missed this function.
Love your review - it's convinced me to make this my first proper synth. Just a quick question from a newbie though, would I be able to play another melody over the sequencer? Or does the fact that it is mono restrict the live performance aspect to looping a sequence and then modifying it?
You can play over the top, but as you said, it's a mono, so any notes you play from the keyboard will take priority of the looping sequence. You can however set the sequence to trigger from the keyboard using the Trig / Hold button.
says part 6 in the intro btw
I also think anyone who is studying to be a music major in college should make a suggestion to your Music school about having a music course about Analog synth education. There is so much to learn and there so many products on the market. I know a few keyboard players who never used synths too much ex specially digital synth because the manual was too hard to understand along with the technical jargon. LOL I've seen those type of manuals thrown across a room.
I've watched your entire Microbrute and Monologue playlists and I desperately want both, the Monologue for the rad LFO, Automation and it's more powerful, the Microbrute for that awesome Oscillator and the Brute Factor. I've heard some really nasty dirty, raspy, yet pleasant sounds from the Microbrute. Do you think the Monologue can go there too if you make it? Even the aggressive tones I've heard from the Monologue seem a bit more clean and tame. Which generally is a good thing, but I already own tame synths, I'm looking for a bit more gnarly.
This LFO makes me wonder if there could be a feasible analog circuit for the inverse of the 1-shot LFO - to just repeat an envelope, allowing for much more complex LFO-ish modulations.
I don't know if you're just talking about keyboard/performance synths, but in most modular systems (especially Eurorack and Buchla/West Coast-style), the ability to repeat or cycle an envelope generator is a pretty basic function. The West Coast paradigm really blurs the line in terms of LFOs and envelope generators.
you've sold one to me. Korg should give you some shares
Ha ha, I should be so lucky!
OMG, I have to get me one of those. :D
LFO can you go??
LFOs fuck this thing up so nicely
Think about switching on RingMod and add Drive when doing thatr LFO-knob-wiggle :P
Always enjoy your vids. Can you clear something up for me I heard there are only 20 user spaces to save your sounds? that is a huge shame if true.
Well, I have to agree on that count. If not for motion sequencing, I'd probably say "come on, you owe it to yourself to learn this synthesizer well enough that you can reproduce your sounds... it's pretty simple!" But with motion sequencing and other aspects, it is NOT particularly simple, and there are sounds you'll make that you couldn't just easily reproduce.
Personally, I'd rather have all 100 to myself.
But, as I've said in a lot of different instances, this is a VERY inexpensive synth for what it can do... there are going to be some sacrifices.
All 100 spaces can be overwritten by the user, and Korg has a downloadable patch librarian for the Monologue as well.
Oh, good!
Sorry, Aphex Twin guy. :D
That's gonna be his new name from now on. Richard D. Guy.
man, your finger is screaming for some air... but great reviews! i was thinking of buying one, and you helped me decide, thanks!
I'm glad I could help!
LFO goes up to 2.8 kHz on the Monologue. Is there any synth out there with a faster lfo?
the 2 LFO's on the Doepfer dark energy goes up to about 8kHz
Just a heads up - it says LFO 1 in your intro, not 2.
Hi Marc - loving this series
Slight error - the title in the intro says 'Part 6: LFO 1'
BUSTED
Forgive me if I am mistreating monologue session.... Do you have any plans to do a Minilogue session?
He's already done one.
Is it possible to press and play two keys at the same time?
Yes, but only one note will sound! :D
Far out man!
considering replacing my micro brute.. not good
Wow, that's super cool. Still don't live the sound though. Especially when that odyssey is calling my name.
God damm blip
I think Korg gave too much away for the price regarding that LFO! thank you Tatsuya Takahashi ;-) I believe he's been sacked! damn shame if that's correct:-( Nice vid's as usual ;-) second time watching part 1-2 lfo
That LFO is borderline immoral
Great info but fiddling around on the same white keys for 15 seconds every time you touch a knob really draws out the videos
Because different frequencies are important in synthesis?
