    I thought you said 'Murder Boat' and for second I thought it was reference to some obscure noise artist. Then I realised you said 'Motor Boat'' and started giggling like a 14 year old. However, sincere and heartfelt thanks for the work you do, it really makes things so much more accessible and fun for me.

    You're a great walkthrough-er. Especially because it doesn't come with instructions. I'm old so i like when everything comes with a manual.

    "Not *that* kind of motorboat. . ." Nice.
    Seriously though, I'm impressed by the almost hard FM/AMish (not Amish, obviously) tones you were getting with the higher LFO speeds/intensities. I usually don't like LFOs very much, but this one sounds like an asset.

      I'm like you, Michael. Standard LFO on vintage or analog synths usually generates a typical vibrato effect or sweeping filter that is really quite boring after all of these years (although, sometimes subtle usage can generate cool effects). So, I was surprised and delighted that I could create such unique and interesting outcomes with this LFO.

    11:18 Is what sold this synth to me. Also the rest of this fantastic video series, I've watched all parts twice now. I felt like I got to know the synth better then I would have if I went to the store and tried it for myself (which isn't really an option right now). So thanks for these great video's.
    And this synth is just awesome. I thought the single AD/ASD envelope would be limiting, but that third option really helps and it's just so quick and easy to dial in a great sound. One of those clever 'better than the sum of its parts' kind of synths.

    Marc. Your videos are very thorough and entertaining.
    I have watched several of your video series before, and after purchasing certain bits of equipment - such as the Volcas, the Microbrute, and now the Monologue. I've actually had this for 2 years and not really scratched the surface. I am working my way through this video series with great interest and have already learned a lot in regards to the VCOs, EG, and filter. I am a guitarist of many years. My introduction to synths was the Microbrute which I bought about 4-5 years ago now.
    Anyway. Thanks again.

    Do you use the saw and square waves often (for musical applications)? I tried using the square to make notes jump octaves back and forth, only to discover it isn't unipolar, so of course the pitches were off by a tritone. That, combined with VCO 1 not having a pitch knob, makes for some interesting transpositions.

    My LFO settings keep dropping out during shaping, rate and intencity goes to plain sawtooth etc. in the middle of adjusting and I can't get the effects back. Just now, while typing, the LFO reseted itself. Am I doing something wrong, or is the LFO broken? Pitch seems to work fine. I also keep hearing clicks and pops constantly while shaping. My synth is set based on yours and it's on VCO 1 while doing evything mentioned here.

      "FM hater video guy" was someone else in my mind for a long time. I had gone looking for serious tutorials on FM sound design... That the clip length was long enough to look like a real tutorial, that was evil. Took awhile to realize the kind Moog foundation guy was the same person. ;-)

    Hi, I AM buying this machine as my first hardware synth. I have serious question.
    Is that thing on 11:20 (doing incredibly fast and strong LFO on pitch) safe for your synth's analogue oscillator? Won't it break and I van Play IT all day? ^^ thanks on advance for your answer.

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  7 років тому

      My understanding is that it is a "sync pulse," which means that you could probably use it with modular. But I'm the wrong person to talk to this about!

    Neat, so it's basically a redone Monotribe LFO.

    • @Longuncattr
      @Longuncattr 7 років тому

      I just checked Marc's LFO video in his MicroBrute series, and it doesn't
      go nearly as fast as the Monotribe's (whose knobs also have a much
      finer resolution, a lot more than 7-bit). To my ear, the Monologue LFO
      seems to have the same frequency resolution, perhaps scaled slightly
      differently. So, that combined with nearly identical speed and routing options is what led to my judgement.

  • @RigatoniModular
    @RigatoniModular 7 років тому

    So they decided to learn from their Minilogue mistakes and not reset the LFO when you press a key?

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  7 років тому +2

      How is LFO restart a mistake? I think that these days people want their LFO to restart with a key press so that it can be synced, etc. Granted, I'm more used to free-running LFOs... but if this LFO was free-running, you'd miss out on the one-shot feature, which is unbearably cool.

    • @inthefade
      @inthefade 7 років тому

      Having a 1-shot LFO is really useful on this machine because of the limitations of the AD/R-style envelope

    • @RigatoniModular
      @RigatoniModular 7 років тому

      In the Minilogue, it basically made the LFO useless for modulation in pad sounds. Every time you added a new note, the LFO (s ???, was there even more than one?) would reset in how it affected all voices, which was very jarring.

    • @youvsyou945
      @youvsyou945 7 років тому +3

      Ian Hoffman you're incorrect, the Minilogue in program edit can have the LFO reset on key press or NOT.....Go to program edit/Button 3 and turn LFO Key Sync to OFF, you can also turn Voice Sync on/off which will sync the phase of the LFO between voices or have all 4 of them running freely(yes in the Minilogue there is an LFO per voice). By default on a lot of patches Korg set LFO Key Sync to on and that was what you were experiencing. You can also have the LFO BPM Sync to on/off....which will give you a numerical range, or a beat measurement that syncs to the sequencer. Explore your synth and RTM:) Marc, you should know this lol;)

    • @youvsyou945
      @youvsyou945 7 років тому +2

      Marc, you reviewed the Minilogue lol;) On the Minilogue..... Program Edit/Button 3: Turn LFO Key Sync on/off to have LFO restart on key press or NOT. LFO Voice Sync can be turned on/off too which has the phase of the 4 LFOs synced or running independently for all 4 voices....LFO BPM sync on/off is an option too on that page.

    • @rockstarjazzcat
      @rockstarjazzcat 7 років тому

      Hmm. I don't miss it on this synth, but I do find triangles to sound quite unnatural on say, guitar chorusing. Whether it makes much difference to perhaps, audio rate modulation, I couldn't say.

    • @robertsyrett1992
      @robertsyrett1992 7 років тому

      It's easy to tell in comparison to each other, but I admit it's not a big deal.

  • @inthefade
    @inthefade 7 років тому +1

    Who ever uses an LFO to modulate pitch that much in any actual musical way though? Maybe in one song have I ever used that. I'd rather have more travel on the knob dedicated to useable pitch modulation.
    That isn't to say you're wrong about it being cool, but it isn't terribly useful. And like you said, "a synthesizer is an instrument".

    • @inthefade
      @inthefade 7 років тому

      That being said, I'm blown away by the fast rate of that LFO :o
      When a synth gets your brain going with neat sonic opportunities like that, you can't help but feel a little excited.

      @ekkomusic 7 років тому +2

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  7 років тому +9

      Well, just because it isn't tonal doesn't mean it can't be used in a musical way. In face, a synthesizer that is capable of making sounds like this has use as a sound design tool, unlike the synthesizers whose modulation is limited to that which would be traditionally musically useable.

    • @zarchocon
      @zarchocon 7 років тому +5

      Look up FM Synthesis (Frequency Modulation). It's an entirely different branch of synthesis. Most analogue synths we're used to are based around subtractive synthesis, i.e. start with a harmonically dense waveform (square, saw) and remove harmonics with a filter. FM is basically modulating in audio range and above. It's often metallic sounding, but can be great for pads and atmospheric. The fact that this can do both is a huuge bonus.
