    I've been making music for over 30 years, but in the hard rock field as a guitarist and drummer. A few months ago, I became more and more interested in analog sound synthesis (midlife crisis?), And I thought "Hey, I'm an expierienced musician, the synthesizer is just another interesting little toy, no problem!" After having the monologue at home, my ego became much smaller within a few minutes. Uff, a completely different way of making music! Apart from my experience in harmony and rhythm, I could hardly apply anything that I had learned in 30 years! But there is no giving up. Therefore, many, many thanks for your videos, for taking the fear away from a curious but overwhelmed old rock musician ...

      Welcome to the channel and I'm super pleased I could help out. Also, don't tell anyone: I'm actually a guitarist playing in hard rock bands as well. Keep this between us though, I don't want to lose my synth-cred.

      +matt sweatgast haha, this thing gets played pretty much every day, even if it's just a cursory noodle. I was worried that people would complain that it's scruffy, so I'm overjoyed that the first comment on that matter is Pro-smudge! Thanks for watching!

      hahaha absolutely, the slight cosmetic distress really drives the point home on the whole "knowing a synth inside and out" which is really the only way you get to figure out cool little tricks like these so i'm totally for it. can't wait to pick mine up soon enough.

      honestly i really kind of love the blue... it's just got such a cheesy kind of early 90s flavour to it in my eyes but realistically i'll probably just go with the black because it's really goes with everything (it also doesn't hurt that it looks fantastic) although i'm positive it will be just as smudgy if not more so. I guess the luckiest thing here is that it really doesn't matter at the end of the day because they all look fantastic (and sound the same :')

    As soon as you said third oscillator, I was like "the filter." But then you explained going into edit mode and setting key track and I was like "OHHHHHHH!" I'm an idiot, I've never read the manual (frankly I really don't like that it came on two huge folded up sheets of paper) and therefore never took the time to actually USE the edit mode. Clearly I need to spend some more time learning more about this synth.

    Good morning Mr Sink I was wondering if you could help me out please I have a minilogue and a monologue and I'm hoping you may know if it's possible to turn off motion sequencing or motion capture so as to use the controls like a traditional analogue. Any advice would be thoroughly appreciated as I really want to do this because sometimes it would be useful for creating patches. Thanks again for all your hard work it's helped me out a lot. Hope all is well with you. Heath

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  5 років тому +1

      You can turn off motion sequencing in the sequencer menu. It's one of the buttons on the right (1 from the end I think off the top of my head). You can just disable all 4 lanes on a patch, then you don't need to worry about it.
      Also, if you're not recording, it won't capture the motion anyway.

    Do you get deep bass out of it? I'm currently comparing this unit to Arturia's MicroBrute,.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  6 років тому

      +Moralz Music I'd say so. I've done a couple of bass patch tutorials on the channel you could check out. The Brute has a suboscillator, which helps, but then the Monologue has two oscillators, and the triangle wave is nice and deep, so you can use one as a suboscillator. The drive circuit also emphasises the low end, so that's a useful feature too.

  • @jonbarlow2183
    @jonbarlow2183 4 роки тому +2

    I'm new to synths, so this may be a silly question - when vco1 and 2 are off, how is sound produced by adjusting resonance and cutoff? You used the term self-oscillation, what is that? Great video by the way, cheers.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  4 роки тому +12

      Resonance on a filter (on this filter anyway) involves electronic feedback.
      You've probably encountered feedback when a microphone is held too near a speaker and you get that howling tone happening? That's caused by the microphone picking up the signal from the speaker (even if it's just the inherent noise of the amplifier), the speaker amplifying what the microphone is picking up, the microphone picking up that amplified version of what it was hearing, the speaker making it louder... And on and on until you re-enforce whatever frequencies turn out to be the strongest over and over until they form a tone all of their own.
      Cranking the resonance on a filter is a bit like moving a microphone too close to a speaker, but within an electrical circuit. Some of the signal from near the output is fed back to an earlier point in the circuit and the resonance control is controlling how much that happens - feed enough signal back and certain frequencies (typically the cutoff frequency of the filter) re-enforce and it starts to howl on its own - that's self-oscillation.

    Thanks a lot, Oscillator Sink, for this (almost exciting) share of your knowledge! Although your way to explaining things is greatly understandable, I didn't get the point why the LFO isn't affecting the sound coming from the two VCO's. Since it is passing the filter it should alter as well, as far as I would assume. I'd be happy if you or someone else would clarify this question.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  6 років тому +1

      It is affecting the oscillators, but only as far as their harmonic content, not their pitch. On the other hand, you hear the "pitch" of the self oscillating filter move as you modulate the cut off. Does that make sense?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  5 років тому

      I'm not totally familiar with the genre, but if you look at the two synth architectures, they're somewhat different - juno is a square or saw DCO + a square sub, Monologue is two VCOs, but you could have a saw on one and a square on the second pitched down. The filters are very different of course, but you could probably get somewhere close with some work?

    • @Pan6888
      @Pan6888 5 років тому

      ua-cam.com/video/3L_VQHSRMjg/v-deo.html things like that from the specs i coclude that you can definitely do such sounds, i am about to trade that for my Microkorg which is a poly of course so i am in dought still about if its a good trade.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  5 років тому

      You could get a lot of the way but a couple of things to consider: the DCO and its sub are totally locked in tune on the Juno - you'll have to be so careful with the tuning on the Monologue to replicate that level of stability, and secondly: the Juno's filter (Roland filters in general I guess) is a big part of that sound - that 'meowing' quality is super specific (and lovely!), and the Monologue's filter is a lot meaner.
      So you could probably get close from a general standpoint, but you won't get quite the same character.
      It's a bit more expensive, but have you considered the Deepmind? That's very influenced by the Juno series and can probably get you nearer?

    • @Pan6888
      @Pan6888 5 років тому

      I am not expecting to get the same sound from a cheap synth compated to juno, i mention juno synth cause these where used extensively during the 80s. I do not intend to buy it but was offered a trade for my microkorg and to be honest i get some nice juno like basses on the microkorg original that i own. Both units - monologue and microkorg - are mint so i am thinking if that trade is a nice one or i will end up with something that is not that usufull for my case.

  • @tdiol

    My monologue arrived today and i noticed that there’s a subtle kind of white noise even with no volume on both vcos. It happens with the filter completely opened and without ressonance. The noise goes out progressively as i turn the cuttof down. Is this the way it is suposed to happen? I cannot notice it in the video when both vcos are muted....
    It is indeed subtle but im just afraid of not having an ok unit... everything is working perfectly. This is just something that i noticed.
    thanks in advance!!

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  5 років тому +1

      You might expect a little noise in the system, but nothing intrusive. Couple of things to think about: how are you powering it? Are you plugged in via USB? Does the noise change if you move to a different room? Noisy power, bad grounding on USB hubs, interference from other equipment could all introduce extra noise...

    • @tdiol
      @tdiol 5 років тому +1

      I really think its just the natural noise.... The noise occurs just when i play (without playing the keys its completely noiseless). Im playing through batteries, so probably its not the power source. I’m not conected via USB either. It really isnt anything annoying or even noticeable when producing any sound. Just something i noticed while turning down both vcos completely.
      Thank you a lot one more time.

    Really wish Korg would have added the monotribe sample hold lfo to the monologue maybe you can figure out how to make the sequencer step in a sample and hold way.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  6 років тому

      That would have been cool. You can set each step of the sequencer to a discrete value by holding the step button down and moving a knob (like a parameter lock on an Elektron synth) - that gives you a pseudo sample and hold sound, although obviously its not random. It's probably close enough to fool a casual listener though.

I've been watching videos on UA-cam of people plugging their minilogue into other synthesizers so they can play their let's say master keyboard and have the second keyboard trigger at the same time and the same note. Someone did somehow via midi and sending the signal of the second synth back through the auxiliary input on the minilogue I don't know if that's necessary and I'm sure it's the same on the monologue, they just said it was an interesting way of sort of adding another oscillator and I like the idea of that if it's possible I can hack together my own hybrid. Everton very limited knowledge of CC would you know how to accomplish this please any advice as usual would be awesome. I hope you're having a great day/night and hope everyone is well.

      No worries. It would work exactly the same on the Monologue - take the midi out into midi in of another synth then take the audio out of that into the external in of the Monologue.
      Remember, though, that the External in will send the signal through the filter and amp of the Monologue, so ideally you want something with a bright, unfiltered timbre and with a very long (or infinite) sustain so that it doesn't cut out suddenly alongside the other oscillators. Something like a Volca FM in mono or unison mode could be ace.
      Also worth noting that the Monologue actually sends out polyphonic midi so you could in theory have a bit of a paraphonic setup (if that's your kinda thing).

      Oscillator Sink thanks again mate I managed to get it going before I read your message surprisingly yes some days I am awake and surprisingly it also worked without running audio out of one synth into the auxiliary in. Which is pretty cool I didn't expect it to work without that. Just midi out midi in of course the auxiliary trick works as well, I'm sure I will mess around with all combinations

    Hey sorry to bother you again mate I'm stuck on motion view on my monologue and I don't know how to turn the oscilloscope back on any help would be thoroughly appreciated as I have no idea what I'm doing and I don't want to stuff anything up any help would be really appreciated. Thank you you are after all my monologue guru, I hope you don't mind me saying that. Kind regards Heath

      It sounds like you just need to switch the sequencer switch from "Motion" back up to "Note" I think.

    Weird question, but if I may ask, can I get a sound lead from this similar to the song Hi roller ? It’s not the best music but that specific lead is nice some call it a Nintendo lead. Here it is at the beginning: m.ua-cam.com/video/t6_jhYL9Vqg/v-deo.html

      Turn on portamento, back the filter off a tiny bit, turn off one of the oscillator, set the other to square and adjust the shape control to get that thinner sound.

    Here's something I'm curious about. Why go with the Monologue when you can get a Minilogue that has an extra octave and polyphony? I'm not being a smartass, I'm really not aware of any strong benefit the Mono has over the Mini. Is this just Korg trying to get you to buy extra hardware?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  6 років тому +2

      I think it comes down to the fact that the Minilogue was *designed* to be a polysynth and the Monologue was *designed* to be a monosynth. There are choices to be made about the voicing of the synth that will make it more suitable for the job - the Monologue has more "forward" and aggressive oscillators and the filter is a lot more dramatic - stack that up with a mono patch on the Minilogue and the Minilogue will usually come off a bit... just 'less'. Similarly if you poly-chain 4 Monologues things probably won't be as usable as everything will be vying for space.
      I kinda experienced this recently - I have been building mono patches on my DeepMind and they sounded pretty good to me, but then I turned on my Monologue for the first time in a while and the immediacy and punch of the sounds knocked my socks off! They were just built to do different jobs.
      Hope that makes sense!

      Qu1 have had my Monologue for several months and I am loving making NOISE. I bought a Keystep and am coming to grips with that. I have seen people on YT use several units to create a track : a drum beat background and a synth ( or two)-I would like to do that. What would you recommend as a drum /beat source and how do you sync all the units together?
      I would prefer physical units rather than using a DAW.
      Qu2( cheeky) How do I record what I do/make? I have a Focusrite interface and a Mac , the Monologue and a DM12 ( I do have access to a Launchkey too)-As you see I don't need much encouragment to buy gear :)

      1. You are spoilt for choice these days! I don't know what your budget is but: right at the low end you have something like the Teenage Engineering PO-12; if you go second hand that'll be super cheap - the PO-30 is a little more but superb. Then you have the Volcas - both the Beats and the Sample are super good fun. Moving up from that we're looking at the Arturia Drum Brutes - they've just brought out a new version (the Impact) which is very keenly priced. Those kinda go up in order of "jam-ability" in terms of hands on control so watch some videos to see if you like the sounds and workflows. If your budget is higher we can talk some more ;) (for example, I have a Vermona DRM1 Mk.iii controlled by a Beatstep Pro, but that's quite a jump in price!)
      2. Sounds like you need a DAW. There are far too many options to discuss here. I use Reaper and Logic myself but there are plenty of other choices!
      Hope that helps!

      Oscillator Sink . My oracle of the internet: I have TE PO 12 , a cable which fits in the out socket of the TE and in the sync in socket on the Monologue.....no sound...what am I doin’ wrong?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  6 років тому

      Does the PO-12 make noise on its own (not plugged into anything)?
      What are you plugging into what? Are you plugging the output of the PO-12 into the Monologue?

      Ok, found it... you must set velocity curve to constant in the global option...

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  2 роки тому

      @@canneberegerouge1 you're better off just setting the velocity to cutoff to 0 percent - that's on the program menu and is per patch (it should be set to that as default actually on an Init patch). That way you won't need to keep adjusting the velocity curve (which you want set as normal for most patches).

      Did I present this as revolutionary? Are there people in the comments that found it interesting and useful? Was there a time when you didn't inherently know about this? Were you born with the knowledge? Try not to spread negativity on the Internet, there's so much already.
