Paying someone to unwittingly commit a crime is still a fucking crime.
The neighbors vandalized the homeowner's property. Imagine being that entitled that you think you have the right to get away with vandalizing your neighbors property. This is why you need to install cameras.

The neighbors PAID to have the property vandalized. I guarantee there’s criminal culpability there.

I saw an article online about this whole situation on this house painting story. They mentioned that the paint job wasn't that good because the neighbors told the painters they didn't want them to scrape the old paint because they needed it done quickly. Because of the old paint there were bad spots. They had it painted grey to match the neighborhood. The article said that the home owner sued the neighbors for the cost to repaint her house with the painting company as the main witnesses. That was when the neighbors countersued her for the original charge to paint it. It went to court and the judge said that it was more than just a civil case and there were criminal charges brought against them for vandalism and fraud. The neighbors had to pay to have her home repainted and they got community service for the criminal case.

A part of me wants to refuse this is a real story, however I've lived in an HOA community and literally anything is possible. 😆

As a lawyer, I’m in the “it’s not real” camp. Instructing someone to trespass is trespass etc. all of the things OP says they are stuck because of are not true. It is damage to alter someone’s property against their will no matter is someone likes the color better. It’s the same as scraping it off and making it grey that way. They have to restore it. So silly.

Get footage from the paint company of them setting up the order or get the paint company to identify them as the ones who hired them and sue them for vandalism. It is against the law to modify another person's property even if you pay someone else to do it.

Paint the judges/legislators/prosecutor’s houses until they find a way to let you sue
Harm WAS DONE to the house. Talk to the DA if the police won't start the process and/or civil suit with intentional psychological harm done to you.
It’s vandalism. They hired someone to vandalize their property. Take them to small claims court. Paint your home back to yellow and have them pay for that too. They’re so entitled

And on short notice. They didn't know beforehand she would be gone, they had to find someone to do it in 12 days or so. That would be nearly impossible around here. But do companies usually ask for the deed of the house? I don't think revenge-painting of houses is very common...

Bought a house next door to neighbors whose entire garage door was covered in a Chicago Bears logo. In NY state, Buffalo Bills territory. We didn't care. Their house, their deal. Also, easy to give directions, "the one next to the giant bear head on the garage door." Kind of missed it when they got vinyl siding & replaced it.
If I were OP, I'd go for something fun when it was time to repaint. Rainbow. Purple. Yellow background with dinosaurs or whatever critter you like. At least put your spirit animal on the side that faces your a-hole neighbor's house. In the meantime a sign saying "Begone, Evil Gingers," with a pentagram or whatever symbol locally wards off evil.

OP, about the only thing I can think of is to take pictures of your neighbors to the painting company to see if they can/will identify them as the people who paid them to paint your house. You can try to make a claim against your homeowners insurance policy, but I really don't know how far that would go. Your home wasn't actually "damaged", merely it's color changed. If you have it repainted, maybe if your house needs a new roof you could try to find matching yellow shingles. Maybe a few other neighbors could join in and all paint their houses yellow as well, it might drive the bad neighbors out of the neighborhood.
UPDATE: I've always known criminals are often fairly stupid, but they just incriminated themselves in admitting to having your home painted without your permission. Not only are they on the hook for the money they've already paid, they've now put themselves on the hook for REPAINTING IT YELLOW (or whatever) plus their and your legal fees!!! IDIOTS!
OP, PLEASE, PLEASE update us after the legal actions are over, we need to know the outcome!

OK. Something about this story seems off. She trusts the other neighbors to pick up her mail for 2 weeks, but not to give them her phone number? Why wouldn't they call her to be like, hey, your house is being painted another color? They were aware enough to call the cops, but not explain to them that she didn't want her house painted. Since they know the whole story about the other neighbors wanting her to change the color, this would have been the first thing I did. She may not have been able to leave from her trip, but she could have called the company doing the painting and tell them to stop.

Imagine what they are like on holidays? I do not think these neighbors would do well in a city where everyone purposefully paints their homes bright colors. If I was one of the neighbors who hates these neighbors I would paint my house a bright color too just to tick them off. I hope the whole thing went well for OP, and she not only won the case, but made them paint her house back.

My neighbor has a pink door and I don’t like pink. Would I personally paint it a different color? Nope. Why? Because it’s not my door and the only time I see it is when I am going up the hill to my house. Plus the house I’m living in is a rental and I can move at any time. I have no right to tell her to change the paint color or to fix it myself. She owns the house. Honestly it does look better than the black door that the house flippers painted.

I'd get a relative from out of town to hire a different paint company to paint the neighbour's house. That way they can't say it was OP that did it. Plus they most likely would never see the person thus it wouldn't tie it back to OP.
