I cannot imagine something as personal and important as your baby’s name being chosen for spite.

I would have loved to hear the conversation between her and her boyfriend about this.
"No, you don't understand, honey. We _can't_ give him a name from your side of the family because I _really need to screw over my sister!"_

My aunt stole the name my mother had chosen for me. Now I consider that a bullet DODGED - my cousin and my aunt can enjoy. I'm happy not being named Karen.

A close family member's name was Karen, and she passed away. When I got older I began thinking that if I ever have a daughter I would love to give her that name in memorial to that family member, but sadly it is a dangerous name to give now. Hopefully, the use of that name as a negative will die down soon.

      @@tohrurikku,
Use it as the middle name(s)... that way you honour your loved one without putting your daughter through emotional turmoil.

Holy crap. So she not only insisted on stealing a baby name, spiting her sister was so important to her that she wouldn't even give her boyfriend, the kid's father, a say in the matter. How does this woman have any friends at all?

I’m glad that she had to change the name. The sister needed to have a lesson for being spiteful. Good for OP and his wife sticking it out.

Moment of mad respect here for OP and wife for the masterful powerplay of "Fine, name your baby whatever you want. It's not changing our decision because no one can own a name" and sticking to it! SIL got exactly what she deserved. Imagine the audacity this girl has! They must have been just giving it away wholesale the day she was born.

The fact they want $$ after it all is so laughable.
Some peoples motives and thought process i have zero understanding for.
    Wtf 😂

It really is amazing, the lengths she went before, and even after she caved. She: 1) stole her sister's baby name; 2) insisted her sister choose a different name for her own baby, employing brother-in-law to issue threats regarding same; 3) accused sister of copying her when she followed through with the original name; 4) tried to sic boyfriend on brother-in-law in retaliation; 5) accused brother-in-law of "emasculating" boyfriend when this failed miserably; and finally 6) relenting only after boyfriend had had enough of her crap, demanded financial compensation for expenses and "emotional damage" of changing her son's name.
Like... how much punishment do you have to take before you decide to take the L and get the hell on with your life?

It is just... Crazy to me that way of thinking... Far to much energy and effort just to try and "get one" over on your sister.

My cousins wife and I were pregnant at the same time and knew we both picked the same name but in the end we spelled them differently and neither of us cared the other one had used that name. People need to grow up and just love their kids and family. That is all that is important.

A cousin is different from a sister! Also it was his Grandfather's name! They did not need to be the bigger people here!

I thought I was being somewhat original when I named my son his father’s nickname. I was shocked when it ended up being one of the “in” names that year and he wasn’t even the only one in his in his preschool class with that name

People should post their third or fourth choice as a dupe. Then when the baby comes just say, "The first time saw them they just looked like a _____ not a _____."

The best entitled sister stealing a baby was when the OP, after excessive hounding from her sister, told her she planned to name her daughter Mierda. Sister called OP an AH when her OBGYN informed her of the English translation for that word.

I have a funny story about baby names and family. I have a niece (in law) that we hadnt talk to in a number of years (no issues just distance) we knew she was having a baby around the same time as I was sue with my second but that’s as far s the information had been provided. When I gave birth we didn’t have a name picked out but my husband saw our daughter and said this is her name and I agreed she looked like a ___name but I HAD to spell it because I wanted her to have a special spelling to match her older sisters however we did not know that our niece (she was due a month or two later) had picked not only the same name but also the same odd SPELLING that popped into my head on sight of my daughter. And no one told her anything about my youngest daughter. In fact the ultrasound had been wrong when it showed us she was a boy so we’re completely unprepared. When we each found out a couple months later we thought that we would have a story like this where we’d be angry at each other. But no we actually love it. Her daughter is very special to me now (mine passed as an infant) and my niece and I have agreed to not let distance between us make us lose touch.

My daughter and niece are gonna have the same middle name to honor my husband’s mother who passed away on his 16th birthday. SIL is totally ok with it when I said I wanted their mom in our daughter’s name so we can honor their mom. My husband is happy with how it is and so is his whole family

    The name thing...my goodness.
My ex mother-in-law before she passed...asked me to give my son the middle name O'neill. She was dying and did in fact pass 3 months after my sons first birthday.
She paid for my first car...taught me how to enroll in college...set me and my son up with his godfather (her best friend of 30 years) and loved the shit out of me.
Her son (my sons father) was busy making a new kid he didnt have anytime to do with either. MIL did not agree...she made sure i walked beside her casket with my son at her funeral. The baby mama showed up in a maroon sweat suit and sneakers...and shoved me into my sons birth father almost knocking the casket out of his hands and putting my 15 month old in harms way.
Needless to say...i didnt ride with them in the limousine as they already told baby mama she couldnt ride with us...i chose to ride in my new car with my son and meet them at the burial site.
Fast forward 3 months...our divorce is finalized and i am informed that his replacement kid. Thats what he called the poor boy...was going to have the same middle name as my son.
We have no idea where john is...we dont know what happened to him after the charges...all i know is the boys nanny got custody.
There is much more to this than just a name...sounds like they need to go full no contact...this will never end.

I’m child free but I have a few names picked out just in case something happens and I end up pregnant. Dante-after my favorite movie Dante’s peak. I love volcanoes. Alan Casey Earl after my cousin who died and my two grandpas (A.C.E.) Cassiopeia after my favorite constellation and a shout out to my inner Harry Potter nerd. Harry’s grandmother is a black and they named their kids after stars. Nova Linda because it’s the name of a small volcanic island and it’s also another name for star. Clarion because I love Disney and it’s Queen Clarions name from tinkerbell. And it’s also a name for carnations and those are my mothers favorite flower. Or Ginger for Best friend whose like a sister to me. It’s her nickname. She nicknamed me Asa. So I’ve thought about using that as well. Then my grandpa Allen and my grandma each. Gave me nicknames that I might use
