One of the things I really appreciate about the Wonder Woman movie, is that it didn't need to make the men in the film weak, stupid and useless in order to show that Diana is strong. They were often brave and capable and contributing to the story and action, despite having no super powers. Diana's not strong in comparison, she's just strong.

That's exactly how a Female character and her costars need to be portrayed. I'm starting to warm up to Captain Marvel. I just hope it doesn't get Me Too'ed to death. I know one thing for sure though. They're not emasculating Samuel L. Jackson.

adam quane I think those vices were to illustrate the story's message: that humanity (not exclusively men) were flawed, and that war caused damage.
Diana starts the film with a very clear, black-and-white view of the world (humans were good, Ares was bad, stop Ares and you stop the badness). However, when she actually joins the world, she has to join forces with flawed people: a liar, a murderer, a smuggler, and one who was all 3. Yet these are the people she actually forms a bond with and has to rely on to complete her mission. She realized that humanity as a whole has a dark side, and Ares just exploited it (Ludendorff's lust for power, and Dr. Poison's sadism).
This helps Diana to decide to fight for her values and what she believes in (in her case, love) rather than fallible humans.
It was a wise choice in my opinion, as they found a way to make a hero raised in a society of warriors likable without glorifying war.

Exactly, and thats what Aquaman got right. All characters on Aquaman were powerful and competant on their own. A huge bowl of badassery. Now yes, Manta was weak compared to anyone else but I believe thats because they wanted to build him better in a possible sequel but yeah you don't make a strong character by making everyone else around him/her dumbasses. I heard "It's better with Supergirl, a Harvard study says women handle a crisis better than men." (omg cringe). Then, after Clark praising Lois as the greatest reporter ever for a couple minutes, Lois replies "Ya, but this great reporter is still making 21C less per dollar than her male counterparts."
Yikes Superman, get out!, get out now! :)

@@ge2719 Ya, and also that it's illegal to pay people differently with the same circumstance/experience. The 21C less myth comes from differences in jobs, time/experience, asking for raises. - it doesn't account for pregnancy leave, experience, different hours worked (more overtime/less overtime), asking for raises - when all those are factored in it's the same, and has to be by law. It's not like a company can say 'you're a woman so you get 5$/hr less' or something. With companies focused on money, if they could get the same candidates for less per hr. - then that's what they'd do, men wouldn't be getting employed anywhere. :)

I love Lois Lane, her character has been sullied and shit on, for years, but in the last thirty years it's been a good run for her. I'll just say Erica Durance. I don't know who that semi attractive woman with Superman was, (of course I know who the actress is,) but that's also a problem for me. Here's my two cents.
    1. In the show Smallville, Clark never needed to fight Kara to prove his strength.
    2. In the show Smallville, Kara never needed to emotionally validate Clark, she offered him support and advice and that was good enough
    3. In CW Supergirl, Kara for some weird reason needs emotional validation multiple times by every individual. At least it is for different events (mostly).
    a. In CW Supergirl, Superman in a short time span for the same event emotional validates Supergirl multiple times. Very odd to emphasis this one point.
    b. In CW Supergirl, Superman informs Supergirl she is the "Champion of Earth" as if he is not need and/or doesn't want to be Superman anymore. Very odd coming from the man who exemplifies using power responsibly and being the best example of humanity.
    4. In CW Supergirl, Kara's sister seems to be a sadist with a lot of sibling issues...this may be one of the reasons for Kara's need for emotional validation.

It's true. In Supergirl, it's always the same thing. Her friends offer to go with her, she gets all "I don't need your protection!"... like a real bitch. Clark in Smallville, NEVER reacted like that. If his friends wanted to go, he would go with them. If they didn't know his secret, he would frown a bit because they would slow him down, but he would never react like a bitch.
Smallville's Clark had his issues, needed support, but so many times he took the emotions and hurt he got from Lana, and bottled it up and walked out and dealt with it on his own.
Kara who wants to be all alone, always needs help and turns to them.
And we get it. Women power. Supergirl, Star Wars, you've all run that into the ground. WE KNOW. Women can work. Women can vote. Enough.

James Films the feminism really shouldn’t bother you. Idk why some of us men are so sensitive about that shit. Just think about every comic book movie/tv show ever, what do the majority of them have in common? The strongest or main character is always a guy, same with the villain. We have been dominating this industry for so damn long. Of course when the chicks finally get their own show they really try to play up the female angle of it, they should... the feminism and man bashing shouldn’t bother anyone, and if it does we should be strong enough to deal with it. ... all the shit women have to put up with, compared to men, they deserve to have one superhero universe that treats their character like she’s the top dog. It’s amazing how many men are actually angry about this, like we honestly can’t handle this one time when they get to have the top hero lol. We always are, we don’t need it here. Let them have it

    • @jamesfilms_
      @jamesfilms_ 5 років тому +18

I don't care about strong female characters as long as it's actually written well and not forced. Making a character a strong women for the sake of them being a strong women is the problem I have. This is what's happening with supergirl and superman as explained by John. There is no reason why she is stronger than superman other than the writers/crew wanting her to be stronger and it appears they want this just cause she's a female and for no other reason. Theres an episode in the flash where all the girls team up to defeat Amunet. This isn't a problem, in fact I didn't even realise it was all females until the end of the episode where, if my memory serves me right, they make a point of girl power and how they're all so brilliant for accomplishing this without the men. It's not a huge problem, it's just cringe and unnecessary and reminds me of politics (something I would like to get away from every once in a while, esspecially in TV shows). I think The CW, more specifically Supergirl does a great job with their strong female characters simply for the fact that I don't think of them as strong female characters, rather just good characters. There's just a few missteps in there that reminds be or the horrors that is third wave feminism.
But no hero is stronger than superman (so far, in the cw), that's how he was written and people don't want that to change.
Also for the record, Wally West (at least as he was in season 3 of the flash) is probably my least favourite character. But there's a good reason the female characters are disliked a lot by the large majority.
Supergirl is also probably my favourite show in the Arrowverse right now. Although my favourite show switches pretty regularly (every half season or so). I love the cliff hanger we were left with on episode 8

Superman and batman are basically the main attraction of DC but they decided to make a supergirl show and I would be surprised if they come up with a batwomen show just because. Now maybe its just because CW doenst have rights to those characters maybe but the fact of the matter is that Supergirl and Batwomen aren't the lynchpin characters worthy of having TV shows before the big guns. again, it could be an issue of legal rights.

IMHO, it doesn't make sense from a Mythos point of view that Supergirl would be stronger than Superman. In Man of Steel, Jor-El says, "Earth's sun is younger and brighter than Krypton's was. Your cells have drunk in its radiation, strengthening your muscles, your skin, your senses. Earth's gravity is weaker, yet it's atmosphere is more nourishing."
Considering that Superman has been living on earth with all of its benefits for 5-10 years minimum longer than Kara, and considering that males generally have more muscle mass and physical strength than females, it stands to reason that Superman would be physically stronger and more generally powerful. Add to that the fact that Superman has been doing this gig 5-10 years longer, he has that many more years experience fighting super powered bad guys. In light of all that, the idea that Superman is inferior to Supergirl is laughable.
Getting real tired myself of Supergirl's feminist, social justice agenda. I may well stop watching it soon if things don't turn around.
    Again, MHO.

Then again, Supergirl was a teenager when she left Krypton. She developed under it's superior gravity. Her body can actually be more strongly built because of it, since Clark had significantly less exposure to the gravity of his home planet. It's like with astronauts who have to constantly train when they are stationed in orbit, their bones and muscles atrophy. Also, Superman had been absorbing Earth's proteins instead of Krypton's and who knows what that may have done to him.

Superman got a terrific showcase in Elseworlds: we meet Lois Lane, visit the Kent farm and the Fortress of Solitude, and watch a badass fight between Superman and an evil Superman based on the Injustice version of the character (probably the most expensive set piece in the whole crossover event). The whole team takes down the villain, because this is an Arrowverse event, not just the Superman show. - When was the last time Lady Sif told Thor how much more powerful he was than she?
    - When in Black Panther did Okoye, or Nakia, or Shuri confide in each other how useless and powerless they were relative to T'Challa?
The problem is not with strong female characters. It's with lazy writing to weaken male characters so the female characters look strong by comparison.

I know this is a late reply, but I 100% agree. Speaking as a woman and a feminist myself (but not a radical, regressive feminists that believe women are somehow superior) the writing is really insulting to me. The constant need to preach 'girl power' and the constant reassurances that Kara is better than literally everyone, as well as the over emphasis on the fact that she doesn't have a penis makes it seem like they're infantilizing us. Our actions should stand on their own merit; you don't need to praise every single damn positive thing someone does like they're 5 years old. If it's an extremely amazing thing, sure, but your mere existence shouldn't make everyone swoon.
They never treat male characters like this; they write them as capable of standing on their own. Why do supposedly strong female characters need constant reassurances and praise?
Natasha Romanoff doesn't need this pandering. Wanda Maximoff doesn't need this pandering. Why should supergirl?

I think I had that comic book that that first Justice League show came from in which those aliens (Martians?) took down the entire Justice League, including Superman and Wonder Woman, but Superman, while trapped with the rest of them, was not worried in the least, was completely unconcerned with how the situation appeared. And he told those aliens ver to confidently, 'You forgot something.'
      'What?'
"The most dangerous man alive." Batman showed up at that same moment and took care of business.
And who can forget Batman going to Apokalips and came correct with Darkseid? That must he one of the coolest things I think I have ever seen of all things Batman has ever done. Batman vs Predator is my favorite series. The Return of the Dark Knight is probably not considered canon, (at least I never thought of it as so), but the way Batman manhandled Superman is exactly the kind of thing Batman does. (That Batman vs Superman movie is a complete joke. Superman could have killed Batman at any time. Zack Snyder should be slapped royally for messing that comic book up like that. It's not even Batman's style to rely on pure luck like that.) Batman truly is the "world's greatest."

And here are once again shitting on Superman. BLATANTLY. I never could get into Supergirl. I feel like Martian Manhunter is being wasted. She's overrated and Batwoman Lol is nothing special.
Just some tough chick benefiting from her COUSIN'S wealth and technology. I'll go watch Black Widow and Wonder Woman but forcing the Feminist Tough Girl crap and Male Emasculation Agenda is disgusting. The last time I checked Feminism is supposed to be about Equality not Female superiority.

@@MentalStillness First part of your comment I agree. That thought about bar was some time ago, but it came back. I also agree the female tough girl stuff is overbearing. It also is complete disrespect of femininity, which is awesome and so is masculinity.
As for feminism suppose to be about equality, that is what is said, but when reading the writings of prominent feminists, the opposite seems to the be case and their is a lot of problems with their central thesis, what feminism has been used for, etc. Even if I accept feminism as about women and equality, it is ONE FORM of that, not the only and it is not feminism= women rights, it is feminism is 1 vision of women's rights based on the experience of one small group of people compared to rest of world, and then projecting and copy and pasting it to others fallaciously. It is based on a specific worldview (or religion, if your prefer another term haha).

Thank you John! Thats one of the reason ive stopped watching Supergirl. The only way I’ll forgive the CW if they A) have Supergirl job to Superman, or B) have Batman job to Green Arrow.

I do like that Superman was the key to solving everything. That he was the guy they all trusted to fix the world to the way it was. _Because it's Superman._ Who else are you gonna trust? What irked me, honestly, was the aftermath online, where everyone was like "Why is Superman the one solving everything in Supergirl's part?"

Dont think they hate him. I just think they cant have him seem so important to victories for Kara and the others. Gotta think DC/Warner has limits on how much CW can use him, plus its Supergirl not Superman. So if you have him a tier under Supergirl, it allows them to still have him.
I do agree that they make him seem MUCH less powerful than he actually is. Idk. Cant have superman overshadowing the main hero and the namesake for your show. NOW if they have Superman back at Crisis on Infinite Earths and hes jobbed again, I'm with ya.

They trade off a lot. Plus there's always a reason why Batman wins. Bruce spends a lot of time preparing plans for if Superman goes bad and carries kryptonite in a lead pouch with him at all times. Batman wins because he's the better tactician. It pretty much always comes down to who catches who off guard and Batman is almost never off guard. Plus it's always a great fight with both of them pushed to their limits. In Supergirl, he's just weaker than her to make her look better. With Batman and Superman, they are forced to fight and both look strong.

    •  5 років тому +6

He outsmarts Supes sometimes and sometimes he doesn’t. Either way, he doesn’t beat Supes in hand to hand with raw strength like Supergirl did.
