I think it's perfectly fine not to like or want to be involved in comic book films but insulting the people who create them is unnecessary and unprofessional. Particularly in the case of Scarlett Johansson, she was in Endgame, Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit in 2019. She could just coast on her Marvel paycheck if she wanted to but she's still seeking out other, smaller projects.
I don’t like westerns but I don’t judge anyone that watches them, trash the genre, or belittle the actors. Dorff just missed the mark altogether for this one.
It’s has nothing to do with the genre. It has to do that Marvel movies and other action blockbusters have taken over the calendar for 12 months. I was fine with Batman in 1989 cause that was the only comic book movie. There used to be a variety of movies for everyone and that’s gone as the smaller/mid budget movies are a dying breed. The problem is my dopey GenX and older Millenials won’t grow up and can’t get past their youth so they continue to fuel these movies. So move the f*** on, so Hollywood can go back to making movies with an actual story and character development instead wowing a bunch of 30-40 year olds with another pointless CGI-fest.
It’s not good for an actor when the average person on the street isn’t even aware of him, and the few that do only know him as “the bad guy from Blade” more than 20 years ago.
And plus he played a guy with superpowers in a movie not too long ago like a few years ago I think I forgot the name but isn’t that a bit hypocritical because not only did he star in a superhero movie he played the bad guy in blade but he also recently did a movie where his character was someone with superpowers so I don’t understand his words they seem meaningless and hypocritical
Good for Dorff ... people are sick of the WOKE sh*t in comic book movies. realizes Black Widow's marketing is using woke ideology. I came for the rant. John usually gives people the benefit of the doubt and accepts different perspectives. So when he goes after someone it is usually deserved.
@@shameless5444 I agree with you. The Black Widow (and Captain Marvel to some extent) situation is a reflection of what has always happened in Marvel comics, and that is the poor use and characterization of their female superheroes SAVE the X-Men, because they always did a waaaaaaaay better job with them for some reason. In my opinion, generally speaking DC was always better when it came to the usage of their female roster.

@@Jar_Jar_Binks194 as John said, there’s a difference between respectfully stating that you’re not a fan of the genre, and aggressively and ignorantly discrediting the work of hundreds of people (including several academy-award winning actors), and the most successful franchise to date.
I'm surprised John fell into this trap. He is more savy than this. It was one throw away remark in an interview discussing Stephen Dorff's long career and his preference with taking quirky and non-commercial friendly roles. It is unfortunate that the editor's of the interview chose to lead the article with that quote. I'm sure Dorff didn't think it would generate THIS amount of press. When I read the WHOLE article it came off as his own take on his personal taste in movies. That watching a fellow actor being asked to play a bigger than life superhero was embarrassing for HIM as a fellow performer to watch. Because he knew about the kind of leap in logic that is required as a performer to portray that role. I know performers who feel the same way about Shakespeare. Watching performers in tights reciting poetry pretending to be in the Renaissance era. It's not a comment on the content or validity of the performance. But the sheer amount of suspension of belief required to create that performance from the actor. People have the right to express their own personal taste. Doesn't mean they expect us to follow them. Just because Stephen Dorff, Coppola, and Scorsese don't like comic book movies. Doesn't mean we have to stop liking them.
It’s not that he wasn’t a comic movie fan he Trash the black widow cast In the actors in the movie that’s the problem it be different if he said he wasn’t into black widow but he trash the actors Which is disgusting fuck this guy who’s irrelevant as hell
@@isuriadireja91 That's true. It was hypocritical and pompous of him to say. But I throw away Stephen Dorff's comment on comic book movies in the trash where it belongs. I doubt he even gave it much thought. I bet he was baited into saying it too. If a guy is waxing his car about how awesome he is for taking small indie roles for hours and hours he is bound to fall into that trap of saying something negative about the opposite kind of film and characters. Dorff fell into the trap and I kind of think Campea is doing the same.
THANK YOU. Spot on. He was commenting on his industry. That's no reason to attack his skill. He's underrated because he chooses under-the-radar movies.
Yeah, this is what makes me laugh about him claiming that he doesn't want to be in a Marvel movie. I could actually buy his argument if he were in the shoes of someone like Jake Gyllenhaal, who basically stars in critically acclaimed movie after critically acclaimed movie. If he'd turned down Far from Home and said that he just doesn't want to be in those types of movies, people may have been upset with him but they could understand where he's coming from. But as recently as 2017 you had Dorff starring in a sequel to what's honestly the worst long running horror franchise. Yes, the original is a classic, but every other movie is awful. They aren't even in the so bad it's good category like some of the Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th movies, they're just terrible. If you're willing to star in that, then no way are you turning down starring in a MCU movie if Feige approaches you.
@@sadikquahflowers5507 Yeah i mean, unless he was trying to be sarcastic and make fun of himself (since he has himself done both comic book and video game adaption movies). But it doesn't seem like it was.
'"I'm embarrassed for Scarlett, I don't want to be in those movies, I'll find the next Kubrick and act for him instead," says the guy who starred in Alone in the Dark (Uwe Boll videogame movie), Leatherface (worst TCM movie ever), Feardotcom (awful B-horror movie), Bucky Larson (an Adam Sandler-produced comedy), American Hero (straight-to-video B-superhero film), and Immortals.
I think he was lucky enough to land on True Detective, and now he's acting like hot shit that only does arty award winners. But his filmography is filled with shit.
that's cherry-picking, Dorff is a jobbing actor and you could just as well pick out the great talent he's worked with: John Waters, Sofia Coppola, Michael Mann, Bob Rafelson, Oliver Stone. filmmaking is hella expensive, it's a miracle anything gets made at all, and even more miraculous if you get to work with one great director, never mind five.
@@okilfeathermusic Okay, I'll give you that. He did work with some big name directors (although those projects are spaced reaaaally far apart, and he had minor roles), but if you run down his filmography, the *vast majority* of it is like those bargain bin Direct-To-DVD stuff. Some of which would make Desperate Bruce Willis even go "EWWW". I would not make fun of a man trying to get honest work. We know the Hollywood business is sometimes cruel and tough to exist in, and you take what you can. But Stephen Dorff cast judgment on a fellow actor, calling their career choices embarrassing, and calling a movie he hasn't watched garbage and without merit. When someone raises their voice to fellow colleagues like that, they have now automatically invited scrutiny towards their own career choices. And his resume speaks for itself. Completely forgettable outside of a few lucky gigs with some notable names. Even after True Detective he went back to no-name films, and yet mocks Scarlett for her choices in films. If he simply said "Marvel stuff ain't for me", that's fine. But as John said, Stephen Dorff chose to go one vicious step further, and he's only exposed himself as a hypocrite (he was in comic book and video game movies and lots of bad films). And we don't take hypocrites seriously since they seem to lack awareness and self-reflection.
@@EnzoTheBaker So what if he calls the movie garbage and doesn't mind his tone? Superhero movie fans get so bent out of shape when someone criticises them. To me it looks like now someone besides the unimpeachable Martin Scorsese has stuck their head on the block, all the superhero movie fans finally get their chance to get their digs in, cause when Scorsese drags a type of filmmaking you just have to eat it and smile. Also, Dorff has made some fantastic films, and downplaying them as "minor" roles that he was "lucky" enough to fall into is not being reasonable; he was popular in his youth, a charismatic and talented actor who was too idiosyncratic for mainstream leads, many people loved him for that. Just let him say his piece, you got the biggest media conglomerate in the world in pumping out superhero movies from here to to Kuala Lumpur, the major US studios are not interested in making off-beat films for adults anymore: John Waters hasn't made a film since 2004, David Lynch hasn't had a theatrical film since 2006, Jarmusch makes his by getting his friends to work for the price of a coffee and a sandwich, Cronenberg just got financed again after considering retirement for years. The superhero movies won the day, and if someone stands up and says AAAH THIS SUCKS, the least you could do is take it philosophically and be a gracious winner. I'm glad Dorff is salty enough to stick his neck out, more power to him.
He didn't but it isn't to hard to infer that if he is embarrassed for Scarlett Johansson and anyone who worked on the movie that he's probably embarrassed for anyone who likes it as well
@@najpalace3458 that's cool, you don't have to infer anything, but a lot of people do and will infer that from what he said. He didn't. It's just overly sensitive, insecure fans projecting their insecurities by taking differing opinions as personal attacks, because we can't simply have different opinions nowadays without the social media whining. I enjoy the MCU, but I'm embarrassed for many of its fans. This forced outrage is pathetic.
Calm down. He gave opinions about his industry. Some of it correct. You overreacted with overflowing hypocrisy. To paraphrase Rob, who was reasonable and sane, there's no reason to "malign" and "impugn" his character and skill. So you don't like his comments. Your rant was far worse than his. You have "the audacity" to "insult" him, wish his career will be in tatters, and call him some ridiculous, abusive names. Insulting his movies and acting skills tells me you don't know how to disagree like an adult, and that you favor superficial movies. He's a talented, underrated actor who chooses under-the-radar movies. He says he regrets his comments and talked to Scarlett so you can relax about the comments that rattled you so. All the advice, abuse, and accusations you spewed? Say it in front of a mirror.
The funny thing is am listening to a guy who rants and talks crap about filmmakers and actors all the time, calling their product crap and now he's mad that an actor says the same thing, now him and his subs act like the actor in particular has not had a good to ok career of 20 plus yrs of work.
Yes, he said something stupid. But to go as far as to say you hope he never works again, come on man. We’ve all said stupid stuff, yourself included. Let’s not cancel people here.
Blade is the only movie I know him from. He's just jealous and mad that he isn't part of a film franchise such as the MCU. "Acting" like a bitter sore loser. IMO.
I am that person who does get very defensive when people trash on comic book movies or just comic books in general, it just irks me that people think these things "aren't cinema" out their enormous ego. It's okay to have an opinion as long you don't irrationalize your opinion.
It reminds me when Dave Batista trashed the Fast and Furious franchise and said he only wants to do good movie...but them he did Army of the dead...I think as actors they should know that sometimes you don’t know how good the movie is until it releases...so don’t say too much of what you will or will not do...
Army of the Dead went #1 worldwide when it came out on Netflix, it's enjoyable fun movie IMO, so i ain't going to join in a hate bandwagon, when everyone is complaining about how unoriginal and oversaturated reboots, remakes. Just enjoy the movie for what it is

Another great epic rant by John Campea. Gold! Also, John, if he hates me for being someone who loves these comic book movies, well then, fuck him! Cause these types of movies are what’s help bringing people like me and others go back to theaters. Help make the box offices, make millions and now hundred millions of dollars. What kind of movies has Stephen “Dork” done to help make us go see in theaters lately?
The best part of this was describing Jodie Foster as “the little girl from Taxi Driver” before his rant. You know his mind was gearing up for a rant after that.
I completely believe - without any evidence or anything to support my belief - that Dorff wanted one of the roles in something from Marvel and the studio told his agent no. The lines of "I don't want to be in those movies. I really don't," just comes across to me as someone saying "You're not invited to my party" and he stomps his foot and says "That's fine, I didn't want to go anyway!" That's my read on his comment.
@@jasonginessestemmet9661 that wasn't his big break lol, he was well known a few years before that. he'd already been in films shown in Cannes, worked with Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper and Michael Caine

This is such an overreaction. Random no-name actor has a dumb take. So what? You just give him more power and publicity by ranting about him. If you really believe he’s an idiot nobody then why care about his opinion? This guy thinks I’m a joke (by extension) for liking superhero movies? Lol I really don’t care. Why should I care?? 100 percent. Just say piss off to Dorff and be done, why 27 times. Its expressed immediately. This wasn't insulting to fans or anyone, it's Dorff trying hard to look special or like he actually refused to be in one of the 70 or so successful comic movies and TV adaptations of the last 15 years when we saw him in next to nothing
Thank you, spot on. So he didn't like some comments someone said. (About their own industry!) That's no reason to call names and wish his career would crash and burn.
I just see John screaming in the thumbnails and think "why? One dude gives his opinion on the genre of comic movies, not as eloquently or spot-on as Martin Scorsese, but it's just an opinion. Getting worked up over how millionaires feel about billion dollar franchises and other millionaires is a waste of time and energy". I'm sure it's great for clicks though. We live in a stupid world.
John is great but he sounds ridiculous with this rant. You think Dorff is the only actor who has this opinion and by the way it's his opinion. Then I'm reading asinine comments from dumb zoomers who forget this man is an actor not a movie star. Has worked alongside everyone from Hopper to Nicholson and has been in the game since the age of 12.
@@tallking7777 Exactly my point! Where was the same energy when Scorsese said what he said? The rant was daft because the statement wasn't an attack on Scarlett because I'm sure Stephen is aware of the other work she has done besides the MCU, just as Rob mentioned.

I don't know, this reaction seems a bit over the top. I was more upset when Scorsese and Coppola went after comic book movies because they're heavy hitters. Bare in mind; I’m actually somewhat indifferent on the MCU and while I wasn’t a fan when Scorsese did it? Marty at least has the cred to back up that kind of smack talk but he eventually clarified the films simply weren’t for him. Stephen Dorff comes off way more pompous and he lacks the self awareness to realize he’s talking out of class against Scarlett Johansson & the quality of MCU films compared to how scattershot his career has been ‘in the search of the next Kubrick.’

The problem isn't that he doesn't like these movies or he doesn't care for them, it's the second part that I think people are getting pissed off about. the fact that he said I'm embarrassed for Scarlett Johansson like he's claiming that he's better than her for not accepting a comic book movie. For example what Martin Scorsese said didn't brother me, he just sounds very pompous but overall it did not directly attack anyone by name.
It didn’t bother me either but it makes him sound super douchey when he’s only been in shitty movies and he’s best know for a Marvel property. His career choices and talent don’t back up his words.
Stephen Dorff is all wrong here and he wants to be directed by the next Kubrick but there is only one Kubrick. And he works with Uwe Bowl which is considered the worst director in movie history

Jeez...didn't know good Canadian kids dropped f bombs on this level. Well done.
Dorff's comments were unnecessarily patronizing to Scarlett Johansson and very snobbish in general about his own movie career. Very boorish.

He is embarrassed for Scarlett but was in fucking Leatherface!!!

I think he was lucky enough to land on True Detective, and now he's acting like hot shit that only does arty award winners. But his filmography is filled with shit.
I enjoyed immortals
that's cherry-picking, Dorff is a jobbing actor and you could just as well pick out the great talent he's worked with: John Waters, Sofia Coppola, Michael Mann, Bob Rafelson, Oliver Stone. filmmaking is hella expensive, it's a miracle anything gets made at all, and even more miraculous if you get to work with one great director, never mind five.
Says the actor whose embarrassing role was in a Happy Madison movie
I think his larger point maybe that the genre is a little played out. The films have become so paint by the numbers.
Stephen Dorff is all wrong here and he wants to be directed by the next Kubrick but there is only one Kubrick. And he works with Uwe Bowl which is considered the worst director in movie history
Dorff flipped a genuinely great performance on True Detective into a bad Fox show called Deputy that was cancelled after one season. Don't act like you take the high ground, Stephen.
Who cares, its an actors thought on a movie. Not important
A Movie he hasn't seen
Who’s cares, it’s just two guys thoughts about an actor. Not important….
@@KCM316 he never said the movie was trash. He said it LOOKS like trash.
Drugs, Alcohol and Resentment: The Stephen Dorff Story. Blade is literally the only movie I could say for sure that he was in. I’ve seen him in other things but I couldn’t tell you what they were, lol.
Also, pretty, great rant.
Jesus Christ, calm down!
This kinda manchild behaviour is just weird. It's one thing to find entertainment value in these kids films or whatever, but to be this passionate about it? It's beyond insane for an adult man to go into histrionics over comic book movies.
