    The sad part is that according to Stover Lucas line edited the novel and cut several side arcs and according to Matthew, the book was better for it. It shows Lucas knows what’s he’s doing. He just can’t do it in the context of dialogue and directing actors.

    • @MrMarinus18

      Some are meant to work as an assistant and some are meant to be in charge. Lucas is obviously the subservient kind.

    Just one thing I want to mention(in case you all already didn't know), apparently George Lucas didn't want to direct the Prequels. I think that explains a lot about their overall quality. George Lucas had fantastic ideas, but he himself recognized that perhaps he wasn't the best person to realize those ideas so he tried to ask others to do it but no one wanted to so he stepped up. Also, another fun fact, Kenobi is Stover's favorite character so that's why he gets so much love here. I really like it because in most other media and appearances, Kenobi gets shit on to make Anakin look better so my boy needs some love. Also, in regards to Padme, I think the idea behind Padme's naivete in romance was due to the fact that she was never really a "normal" person. She went from being a child queen to being a senator. Those kind of lifestyles are super sheltered and likely don't entail her getting out and interacting with people the normal way, so I can kind of understand why she is also not super natural with romance, it also makes sense why Anakin is able to woo her since if she was actually experienced, Anakin would have probably raised more alarm bells for her. Dialogue was still eh tho.

    While the book is clearly far superior to the movie, it also reflects well on the story the movie was trying to tell that with a few tweaks and nuances a great writer can turn it into a classic, at least as far as the EU is concerned. I do not envy the guy who had to write the novelisation of the Last Jedi.

    Ya’ll talking about Dooku on screen reminded me of something that I’ve wanted to mention for awhile now. There is one moment in the Prequels that did ‘Show don’t tell’ very well in my opinion.
    It was the moment in Attack of the Clones when Dooku just blasted Anakin with lightning. He just pulled that out like it was no big deal, and when you consider that Palpatine is the only other movie character who had used lightning up until then, it does communicate just how powerful Dooku was.
    Unfortunately, that’s the only time in the Prequels that effectively did ‘Show Don’t Tell.’

    Personally, i like to imagine that if Anakin was caste out of the Jedi Order for his Marriage to Padme, than chances are that the Republic Military would step in and try to recruit Anakin as their own personal Jedi general. Maybe Anakin might even accept as if saying 'Fuck you, i'm going to see this whole mess through until the end." to the Jedi Order. Even if Anakin left, i think he would still keep on fighting in the war as he still has some loose ends to tie up, seeing as how there are plenty of people in the CIS who want both him and Padme dead, like Count Dooku and Nute Gunray, and as long as they are alive, him and Padme will never be safe.
    Plus he's kind of an unhinged psychopath with some serious problems who thinks that war is fun.

    46:00 The common lesson I think is supposed to be that bravery is not the lack of fear, it is confronting adversity and darkness and evil even though you are afraid. That is what separates those who are brave from those who are cowards. Bravery is not really so much a trait as it is actions, and a brave person is really merely one who makes the brave decision and acts continuously in life, despite the adversity of doing so.
    Many stories and films and ages-old fables have sayings and commentaries on this.

    When you described Palpatine as telling half truths; that was very similar prose and description in the 1973 novel the Exorcist. The elder priest spoke to his “Padawan-priest” and said something along the lines of be careful of the demon-he will tell half truths all with the purpose of filling you with self-doubt, guilt, and shame. Palpatine’s character exemplified this dynamic especially while he was chancellor. Found his character much more interesting while the Jedi were around and he gave the pretense of being a selfless and committed leader. The subtle evil manipulation was completely lost once he became the dictator and didn’t have to pretend anymore.

    Yay! It's finally arrived! The fight sequence is definitely one of the highlights for me in the first act of the book just from how Stover expands on the fight and centers it on Dooku's perspective for the majority of the time. There is a lot of character progression going on as the reader is looking through Dooku's eyes and experiencing from his thoughts how far Anakin and Obi-Wan progressed during the war since they last met at Geonosis.

    I think Dooku is WAY underrated. He whipped both Anakin and Obi-Wan on multiple occasions... in the final fight, Anakin was lucky Obi-Wan had at least briefly assisted in tiring out the Count before Obi-Wan being almost killed (easily)... plus the Count wasn't trying to kill Anakin because he was trying to the follow the plan set up with Darth Sideous. With no plan by Sideous, only an intent to kill, and no additional Obi-Wan to assist, Count Dooku would have made a mockery of Anakin yet once again. I think Dooku wins the one on one fight with Anakin 9 times out of 10 even at this late stage. All the talk about Form V defeating Makashi is just silly... it was purely the Count being set up for failure.

    Both the Prequels and the Sequels suffer from time gap, which is a huge issue, especially since they are forced to be trilogies. There's a ten year gap between TPM and AoTC, and in the movies, we only see the beginning and end of the Clone Wars conflict. 10 year old Anakin isn't relevant, and Episode 1 should have been Attack of the Clones, with some tweaks. The whole tragedy that is Anakin's story is rushed, and should have had a bigger impact than what we got.
    The Sequels on the other hand has almost no time gap between TFA and TLJ. That's terrible for the story, like a "semi-objective" fact. So it would be very weird if they decide to split Episode 9 into two parts, without calling Part 2 "Episode 10".
    I don't get why the screenwriters make such obviously terrible decisions with the time gaps. Wouldn't be an issue if they didn't insist on making it a trilogy. The Original Trilogy is currently the only SW trilogy that succeeds at being a cohesive story.

    • @BattlestarZenobia
      @BattlestarZenobia 5 років тому

      knalle kalle that’s because the original trilogy is the simplest in terms of story whereas the Prequels are a mix of political thriller, war story and an operatic fall of a hero all mixed in together touching themes of genocide, terror, war and corruption.
      Would have been better with four to five films for the prequels or an ongoing TV series a la the Expanse or Game of Thrones

    My favorite scene was actually the interactions with Boga. They were just really cute and I love Obi-Wan's animal affinity skill whenever it's brought up. One of my favorite scene's in TCW was when Obi-Wan was controlling all those monsters on Ryloth and the clones all stare at him in awe.
    To me that is a skill truly unique to Obi-Wan and when he really thinks back to his master. I also really felt sad when Boga died when she did.
    Also to me those are the kind of "filler" scene's I really love. The scene's that are not strictly 100% needed but make the transition so much more smooth and real. That if you want to ride a mount you have to bond with it and that this is something Obi-Wan takes pleasure in.

    One thing that I always noticed is that while Obi-Wan does try to actively distance himself from his master he really is a lot like him and has many of the same beliefs. As he ages these come to the forefront more and more. He also has a very strong affinity with animals, he too can see potential in random creatures who don't have surface value, he too will follow what he believes to be right no matter what others may say. His dedication to the jedi code comes from his own belief and conviction, not from a desire of belonging or a sense of submission to it.

    Ohhhh.... HYPE! RotS is my favorite Novelisation and top 5 Star Wars books. Really set in stone for me my conception of Obi-Wan, Anakin, Sidious, and the Force itself. Although even in this book, nobody knows what to do with Padme... (There really isn't anything to her is there....)
    Having watched the whole video, I am left with two additional comments:
    I have read the book covering the apprenticeship line, but even with it, I sorely feel the lack of a Dooku-as-a-Jedi centric story. I would find it fascinating to explore the possibility of him rising above his own foibles, and why he was ultimately never able to, even at his peak. More personally, I've also always thought was a lack of other examples of *cold* Dark Siders, who touch the dark side not through Passion, but through a disdain for everything in their way.
    Which brings me to my Second point. The Dark Side is not inherently evil, it is simply defined by imposing one's will upon the Universe rather than allowing the universe to act through you. It's about drive, not Passion. The problem is that this is an inherently intoxicating method than inevitably draws to it those inclined towards evil. The best metaphor I can think of is the classical conception of Sin. Wrath, Pride, Greed, and so on are an inherent part of the Human Condition and can be channelled to good ends, but its probably not a good idea to revel in them.

    Dooku minimized and degraded anyone whom he felt threatened by-aka Anakin. This defense mechanism did not allow himself to consciously admit to himself that he felt fear-so he would lie to himself and focus on the aristocratic snobbery aspect of having mechanical hand.

    eh I mean slaughtering a whole tribe technically counted as homocide not murder I guess, but I still do not know if I could consider Dooku Anakins "first murder" as Connor said, there are some other questionable instances before that, like deliberately shoving Durge into a sun or killing all the scientists in the mini-series. Anyways it comes too late into the story to be a moral turning point for Anakin after everything he has already done, I think Lucas messed that up in Attack of the Clones.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91 5 років тому +4

      The events of the microseries aren't something Lucas, Stover or the editors would have necessarily been aware of. Volume 2 of the microseries wasnt completed until only about a month before the release of the movie. So that's an inconsistency I can understand as it came from behind the scenes deadlines and schedules not aligning in a manner that was no single person's fault in particular. The sand people issue is a mess. But the idea that it starts as revenge for what was done to his mother gave him some ground to stand on when fighting the tribesmen...not so much with the children, I'd agree...Durge though...legitimate military target. Anakin was justified there.

    • @umor9014
      @umor9014 5 років тому +1

      @@GreyJedi91 My main point is just that it lacks impact on a thematic or character level, due to everything that has come before. I also think Dooku can be seen as a legitimate target, he was guilty of more things than Durge, they were fighting him in a battle, even with his hands chopped up he is still dangerous and they were not able to easily take him prisoner., they were in a dangerous high-stakes rescue mission at the moment.

    • @GreyJedi91
      @GreyJedi91 5 років тому +3

      @@umor9014 I agreed with your main point as I attempted to make clear. But Durge is a different matter. There is absolutely no way to bring him to justice without killing him. That's all I meant. Whether it makes thematic sense or not, I'd never hold that particular kill against Anakin, nor would it be considered murder if brought before a court in universe. I agree with your point that, to quote the Plinkett Reviews "Anakin was written as a bad apple from the start."

    I have to agree with Connor’s statement regarding the duel in the movie vs the novel. It is one of the best we have ever had in a novel and one of the worst in the movie. The movie felt like it happened because it had to, it was almost pointless having such a great actor like Christopher Lee on the same level that Max Von Sydow was in The Force Awakens but he was barely in the opening sequence.

      We’re Obi-Wan, Evan is Cody and the fight we’re all waiting for is the Separatist stronghold behind that shield.
