      in that scene i only wondered how they would display the sabacc game - as a game. I expected them to play the version with the changing values but i guess like in rl there are many ways you can play it. Also Bane played it 1000+ years before Lando.

    First in TCW, then in rebels, now in a movie, next probably in his own series, and after that his own movie. Then maybe they'll FINALLY put the dead pulp back in its grave FOR GOOD.
    Then in 2030 they'll dig the skeleton and give his movie a sequel.

    I liked Solo okay. There were things I liked (I thought Donald Glover was the best part of the movie). There were things I had criticisms of. But Solo continues to prove my belief that the anthology films are better than the main narrative films (concerning the Disney-made films). Solo is a fun movie. And I like fun movies.
    My biggest critique is Emilia Clarke. I just... outside of Game of Thrones, she doesn't seem to be that good of an actress. She seemed really wooden and not subtle. I don't know if it was her or the writing, but every time she was on screen, I kept going to myself "betray him already. Betray him already. Betray him already."

      Han: "I was orphaned at a young age. I don't know what my parent's last name was."
      Leia: "Wait, how did you get the name 'Solo?'"
      Han: "Some Imperial recruiting station guy gave it to me. This was before I left the Imperial military."
      Leia: "So you kept the name that some Imperial gave you after you deserted and later fought against them? Why?"
      Han:...*shrugs*
      Leia: "Let's hope our son drops it when he gets married."
      Ben: "I'm Kylo Ren."

    Also the Aura Sing and Jabba references really infuriated me. I'm sorry, but I have trouble believing that Beckett killed Aura Sing. Also, Beckett calls Jabba a "local crime lord." If memory serves (and I could be wrong), Jabba was one the most powerful crime lords in the entire galaxy, if not the most powerful.

    • @GAdmThrawn
      @GAdmThrawn 6 років тому +8

      Honestly, Aurra has been such a fan-favorite character for so long that she deserved a much better send-off than a cheap way to make the new guy legit. Like, she was never shown to have died in Legends and like Asajj Ventress, her fate remained unknown. They were saving her for something. Now it looks like in order to prop up their new characters they have to kill the old ones. It's not a very good strategy if they want to keep hardcore fans. This and the Jabba bit just proves that Joe Johnson has no understanding of the Star Wars universe and its lore except from the brief summaries taken from either UA-cam or the Wookieepedia page.

    • @sirjedisentinel
      @sirjedisentinel 6 років тому +3

      @Grand Admiral Thrawn And the sad thing is, I do like those references. It makes the movie feel more cohesive to the entire Star Wars universe, rather than just sticking to the movies (for example, I really REALLY liked that Qi'ra said she knows Teras Kasi). But the Aurra (thank you for proper spelling by the way) thing really pissed me off. I mean, if Beckett was established or written better (hell, if Woody Harrleson gave a better performance... it felt like he was phoning it in), I might think differently. But as it stands, I just can't take seriously that this guy took out one of the greatest (not the greatest, but definitely closer to the top of the list) bounty hunters of the Clone Wars era.

    • @AntoineBandele
      @AntoineBandele 6 років тому +9

      Nope. Even in Legends Jabba didn’t solidify that title until just before Return of the Jedi.

      @Antoine Bandele Thank you.

    • @GAdmThrawn
      @GAdmThrawn 6 років тому +3

      Sir Jedi Sentinel I liked the Teräs Käsi reference too for a few reasons: 1) it's a legitimate martial arts form in Star Wars that's been around forever (pretty sure since the fighting game), 2) it explains Qi'ra's ability to fight in the movie and provides some background to what she was doing between the time jump, and 3) it helps to establish her character. When I first saw that scene I thought that she had been trained by Echani, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear her say that it was Teräs Käsi. Beckett's killing of Aurra irks me in that this guy is a thief and a smuggler; that's what we've seen him do in the movie. Sure, he's a fighter but that's just part of the life. He's not a bounty hunter or a mercenary whose job it is to track down and sometimes kill people. And he's a new man on the scene, so this was just a cheap shot.

    • @Reti4
      @Reti4  6 років тому +1

      Reti4 - You tend to have background checks, basic qualification requirements and fitness tests prior to admittance though. And you definitely don't just walk up to a random desk in an airport or port to sign up. It's a very strange scene.

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 6 років тому

      They are nowhere near as stringent as many people believe. Also when the army was expanding rapidly like during times of war it did go like that. Background checks aren't really needed if you are a citizen of the nation. Many nations actually still have it in their constitution that it's citizens have the right to fight in the army. What are "basic qualifications" is pretty lose. It usually just means good vision and decent health. A strong and fit young man like Han is ideal recruit material so they just let him.
      Today the size of armies is shrinking because of improved technology and it's increasingly more about quality than quantity. So since the army actually wants to decrease in number the requirements for new recruits are very strict. However if the army wants to expand the requirements are loosened. When the empire was establishing itself it needed to expand it's army quickly.
      Though you are right in that there usually is something like a paper you need to fill in but that's usually about it. Lying about your background in an official military paper is the same as lying under oath and therefore punishable by death.

  • @antonakesson
    @antonakesson 6 років тому +4

    I wonder what droid manufacturer thought it was a good ide to make droids be able to feel oppressed or even hurt. Kind of kills the reson to create droids. They are suppose to be able to work and be treated like tools, because they are. It feels like the droids with personalities should be outliers, that not a majority of droids have feelings at all. Just slaves to their programing and owners. Giving them the same ability to think like a human will make them slaves when they are tools to be used. So why make them people? Outside of having unique characters for the audience to follow.

    • @GAdmThrawn
      @GAdmThrawn 6 років тому +3

      Droids tend to gain personalities the longer they go without memory wipes. R2 retained much of his personality and even became very sneaky due to never having a memory wipe. According to Lando, he couldn't memory wipe L3 because she was the best navigator in the galaxy, which I find hard to believe since astromechs are used in that regard. Also you can separate a droid from their memories and download them into something else. You are right though in that they are tools and can be turned back on.

    • @antonakesson
      @antonakesson 6 років тому +2

      It is kind of magical how they manages to get personalities just because the don't do a memorie whipe. How does a programing change without external help to some personality to them becoming a full blown person? It almost feels as if the programing is ment to do that, i'm just left wondering why.

    in regards to your discussion point at 1:58:00ish regarding Han and Jabba.
    This movie does take place 10 years before a New Hope, so it is entirely likely that Han will work for Jabba for years, only to have Jabba get pissed at him right before the events of A New Hope

    I'll be 100% honest I have no interest whatsoever in seeing this film and Im actually happy that its struggling at the box office. It's my personal hope that with Solo's disappointing results, that Disney will learn that you can't rely on just the original trilogy when it comes to Star Wars. It just feels like this film is there to feed off of nostalgia. Really hoping we get that Obi Wan Kenobi with Ewen McGregor or what I think would be special would be a Mace Windu trilogy. Say what you will about the Prequels as films, but at least they were willing to try something new and expand George Lucas's world. I completely understand that Disney is reluctant to do anything Prequel related due to past mistakes by Lucas, but to ignore that Era is both foolish and disrespectful. There are a generation of people that were introduced to SW because of those films (myself included), surely Disney realizes that The Prequel Era (before it became legends) had stories that were just as good or dare I say it better then the original trilogy era. I am in absolutely no way trying to bash the original trilogy (very very far from it) but as great the original trilogy characters are they cannot (and should not) carry the entire SW universe all by themselves. It was quite a treat to hear all of your thoughts on this film Fanalysis. I'd also like to give a shout out to you Reti4 for giving your opinions on very little sleep. You have gained an enormous amount of respect from me as talking about the film could not have been easy. Treat yourself to something nice and once again, thank you all. :)

    Did you guys know that George Lucas had a hand in the closet scene? When Han throws the cape he was holding back on top of the rack he was initially meant to hang it back up properly, but Lucas suggested he just throws it on the rack.

    • @GAdmThrawn
      @GAdmThrawn 6 років тому +3

      Grand Admiral Thrawn Ha yeah, I think Kennedy’s story group was petrified about letting Lucas near Star Wars considering they keep pandering to the original trilogy fans who loath the prequels and almost everything about them and so gave Lucas just a tiny amount of influence.

      As insignificant as it was, I feel like it certainly did more to capture the spirit of the Han we see in the original trilogy. It would have been interesting if Lucas was the one who came up with the general story idea for the film while leaving the dialogue to others.

    Disagree with Jensaarai that Mauls development doesn't make sense. Maul is a Sith, and he's a dependant personality who has been through a trauma, so he's falling back on the Sith Code that he knows, and the Sith Code tells him to get revenge and seek power because in the eyes of your master you are dead and have been replaced. Plus even in Darth Plagueis Maul is shown to be gradually realising that he isn't being trained as a "real" Sith Lord and that Palpatine isn't being straight with him, so he's leaning towards that path even prior to TPM.
    Also, I think that Mauls presence indicates that they likely will indeed be making an Obi-Wan film somewhere down the road...but for better or worse, Maul will be the villain of that film and the Rebels death scene will be undone and play out differently (or at the very best, will be given a live action retooling).
    The "Crimson Dawn are evil" thing I think is meant to be that yes, they "know" that Crimson Dawn are bad guys, but it is a different thing when you are faced with the actual victims of their crimes and can't pretend not to be part of the problem. You think you can keep your hands clean because you are just a smuggler and thief and not involved in the really deep stuff, but in reality you are the bad guy as much as any of their other lackies.
    And according to Ehrenreich, they are thinking of doing a Lando film, and he himself is signed up for multiple movies but doesn't expect (or want) to be doing Han Solo 2 so much as, yes, a series of loosely connected films where he is more of a supporting player in future. Of course, now that Solo has BOMBED...

    • @macree01
      @macree01 6 років тому +1

      But Solo didn’t bomb. It just didn’t do as well as the previous films.

    • @jonathancampbell5231
      @jonathancampbell5231 6 років тому +1

      It had a production budget of $250m+ and worldwide it has made back just over $312m. That might seem like a minor profit, but then you have to factor in additional marketing costs, which was another $150m, meaning its TRUE cost was over $400m with a lost of $88m at least.
      So yes, it counts as a bomb, and certainly no where near as widely successful as Disney wanted or needed it to be.
