There are so many innovative games and some even bigger studios, but mainly individuals and small teams are creating awesome, enjoyable games! I really love playing video games to have fun. Some games are designed to be money making machines, and I don't really play them. Only Fortnite with friends to have lots of fun and things to laugh about. It has always been great. This industry is gigantic and has so much potential that companies like EA, who don't care about the player, but only the profit, are wasting. I really hope the gaming industry can continue thriving with new interesting and fun games and that everybody can have a great time.

A while back I made a presentation at school about how games are a great storytelling tool. Parents were invited to watch our presentations as well, so I was concerned that I had chosen a topic that was too weird or boring for them, but to my surprise a lot of them were interested and paying attention to what I was saying. It was so cool to share some of my passion for games, but even cooler to realize that games can be enjoyed by anyone, not just gamers!

I'm a dev too. Your game should simply be the best it can be. The monetization doesn't matter unless it's live service. Marketing, however, is definitely important for being profitable. If you make the best game in the world but nobody talks about it, then it won't matter. If it's absolutely incredible (unlikely on a first release) then just word of mouth will do its thing.
Good luck and I hope your game will be great!

I remember most of that time being lonely and not understanding how to really make friends. You can call me dumb and I wouldn't fight you much on that but things just didn't click.
Games became my escape and passion which helped me bridge the perceived gap between me and others. I've since gotten help and have learned more about how other people typically feel and have made many new friends but games will always be my comfort and it hurts to watch the industry as I grow up just become a cespit of GAAS and money making schemes instead of that which will make someone feel something.

I’m a solo game developer working in my first devlog, and this is exactly what I’ve been thinking lately. A game should be just another medium of storytelling, while still putting together every other medium. Art, music, writing, logic, everything. There shouldn’t be any more purchases. The game should feel additive because it’s GOOD, not because it’s designed to be.

Idk if all games really need a focus on story tbh. Some can just be focused on game mechanics and gameplay, I think landfalls games are a good example, like Rounds is a fun spin on being kind of a 1v1 roguelike, or 2v2 or ffa with a mod to increase player limits.
And TABS i dont think has much of a story in a traditional sense but it has progression in a campaign.

Sure, there are the easy examples of Real Money Gambling disguised as Gameplay but part of my Job as a System Designer is "What are they doing and how to we get them to do that more?" Tetris is a brilliant piece of Design but the Psychological Triggers it uses are similar to those that make Gambling Addictive

Why does it have to only be about story telling, why can't it be about just game mechanics/gameplay/being fun to play/involve thinking like chess or Monopoly for example, these don't need a story to be fun and can be very social if playing with friends/other people? Games aren't just interactive movies. They can be focused on gameplay and devoid of story and still be meaningful and worthwhile.

    • @aarepelaa1142

@@Gallic_Gabagool if you think about it the best games usually have some kind of story, like Hollow knight, terraria, rainworld, Outer wilds, Risk of rain, Dying light, titanfall 2, Deep rock galactic and Elden ring just to name a few games I know. I feel like usually in games the story most likely forms after the gameplay and kind of the base of the game are set up as things can change drastically during development, and if youve got an idea for a story why not just throw it in?

I am a game developer, and as a child, I've always loved the idea of creating worlds and playing as God. To be honest, creating games (such as having to design the visuals and code the game logic) is pretty fun to do, but I'm really here to leave something in this world when I die. It's hard not to say that I am blessed to have everything in my disposal to do something I've always dreamed of; watching my imaginations turn into reality. I always seek and play video games that fuel my passion, and there are many game developers out there who I learned a lot from just by playing their games. To me, playing video games isn't just about releasing dopamine, but it's also about admiring the pieces of art that took countless exertion of effort to craft.

The issue is that we never heard of good games. Ads are almost always for piece of shits. Games stay hidden in the saturated library. Old good games are not played by new gamers, new good games can't break through the mass because there are too many games, and almost all young new player are only playing and talking about shit they (or their friends) have seen ads about. Only games with ads, meaning (today) shit, can reach people.

video games truly are the ultimate creative medium. making a video game means to become not only a programmer, but an artist, animator, UI designer, writer, sound designer, music composer, level designer, and much more. it requires so many different skills that come together to make something that others can experience. that is what makes video games special.
i think you hit on a very good point, that video games have developed a negative stigma due to the large amount of video games that are nothing but soulless, addiction machines designed only for profit. as a game developer myself, it is sad to see. but you look hard enough, you can find so many fun, creative, and moving experiences that developers like us pour our hearts into.

I usually don't comment on UA-cam videos. Despite being on the platform for over a decade and a half and directly contributing to it via my line of work, it's not something I find worth engaging in.
But I want to share how important this video is and how grateful I am that it was recommended to me.
I went to university to learn how to make video games and I went to it with a desire to create and express new ideas formed from the experiences I had as a child, playing outstanding games that live with me to this day. But after learning the very basics of constructing a game, I was faced with teachers that hammered into me all the marketing practices and financial goals the video game industry needs to achieve for any game to be successful.
Safe to say, being told that I need to restrict myself to a certain type of game genre due to market demands, and thinking about its financial viability and long-term income before even a spark of creativity for a project is born was extremely demotivating to me.
After finishing my course, I ended up being a video editor instead of my original goal of a game dev, as I thought I couldn't survive in this industry without doing exactly what my teachers told me I had to do, and thus, think about money over my passion.
But this video gives me hope that I can still make games, not as a financial incentive, but one that comes from the desire to share and create experiences for the world to see. I want the work of my creativity to be something worth remembering.
Thank you so much for this video.

    Developer here.
Thank you for being our voice. You don't understand how passionate I am about game dev so it's really nice to see someone convey our thoughts so clearly. However. There is another side you must be aware of.
There are hundreds if not thousands of developers just like myself making games out of passion. Putting hours of love and care into our projects and sharing it with the world. Our issue is the fact that our hard work doesn't get the recognition it deserves simply because of these said cash grab/low effort games overshadowing us and drowning us out. Because of this, many developers end up giving up on their passion projects simply because of the fact that it seems as if the industry is built against us.
Thanks once again for your video. Even though I'm mostly quite negative about myself, it's nice to be reminded that there is hope. Things do get better, it just takes a lot of failing first...

Being a game developer myself it's sad to see such art be ruined by greed. When I code games, I always to it for fun, for the gamers, for the experience, for the feeling of satisfaction and pride in my work. But sometimes I wonder how I would even compare to these industries, knowing that their addicting strategies are ruining their once beautiful games, their one unique piece of art.
I think it's time for people to reject games built to maximise profit, and support these aspiring game developers who truly want to create something fun and enjoyable, not solely for profit or greed. It can be really hard to find these hidden gems, but if we want to save the true pieces of art, we all - developers AND gamers - need to do our part.

You have a point, i mean what happend to Unity is a good example, but they are trying to correct that now.
But it's the same for games, mainly AAA games have just become money cows, there is no attention to what the player acutallly wants anymore.
There's also examples where games just get released, like cyberpunk or recently cities skylines, such a good game, but than they push the release a bit to fast.
I think the game industry should go back to where it is okay to take time, to make a better game for all of us.

You mentioned art "losing to greed" and that started to make me think about different mediums and just how corporate things like movies and music have become. I do believe that games will unfortunately suffer a similar fate, and we're already starting to see it with the rise of unfinished live service games, abolishment of physical copies stripping people of their ownership and MTX and ads in full, $70 experiences. When people say "Oh movies/music ain't like it used to be", I think they're right in a sense, but that doesn't mean that there isn't going to be tons of independent artists on small record labels, filmmakers making the most of limited budgets and eventually small teams of game developers pouring their heart and soul into their work. Games are a unique and special art, and while it's disappointing to see much of the mainstream go the way of music and movies, I can rest easy knowing that people who really love games are going to continue making them.
Great video Juniper, I'll make sure to share this to get it the attention it deserves.

As someone in school for game development. Yes. This was so, so beautifully done. So, so impactful.
I've been really struggling keeping up with the work load recently. Learning engines and languages and concepts and soon to be calculus. It's hard. And I've lost my focus, my reason for why I'm doing it. I think this has helped me remember why I'm here. Why I'm in school, why I'm learning and growing and moving. Why I went so in debt for this. Thank you.

That was wonderfully expressed. Though it feels like for generations now our parents have told us that video games are bad and addictive. I have to wonder if that’s affected how they are today in some way. I’m not even sure if I can go into game dev anymore. If it isn’t sustainable anymore as a job and having another job will take up too much of my time and make me too tired, what else is left?

Hello! Game dev here, and well.. wow.
It is making me happy that someone named these problems we have. that how the game industry, or well, experience has been slowly dying, getting dry, with all life sucked out.
and well, as for the last statement, even if I'm one of the hundreds thousands, and my voice wont be heard, Ill try. but I dont know what the world will do. greed is disgusting, but it doesn't disappear.
Thank you for making this wonderful video, because I felt like my inner child shed a few tears.

This is why I will forever be a slave to Terraria. The community is very helpful and welcoming. And the devs keep the game true while actively taking criticism and accepting ideas from the players.
I got the plaseblades reworked in the upcoming 1.4.5 update by making a suggestion to the devs. They listened to my idea along with the others who piggy backed. And within three weeks, the new rework was shown.

And this is why I want to be an indie game dev, there is something so magical about a good video game. I don’t think the greed will ever fully destroy games as an art; as many as there are soulless corporate creations, there will always be those genuine, heartfelt experiences. Because I think a lot of people understand that games are not just an industry or an addiction, but a form of art that combines everything there is to love about art. Visuals, music, writing, ingenuity… if it’s an art form, it can be part of a video game.
Also heck yeah a bunch of my favourites got shown in this video, I like your taste lol

As a upcoming dev myself, this makes me happy to see, I hope and believe that big AAA hellholes are going to cave in on their own greed, overworking their employees and making the dumbest choices imaginable with the art they manage to produce, yeah good luck with making games exclusively with ai, a tool meant to help with repetitive slop work rather than build art, indie games are the future, some recent works I'd like to reccomend to show that real art is still being made:
Loddlenauts, Laika: Aged through blood, Pepper Grinder, Friends vs. Friends, Mortal Sin, Pseudoregalia, Phantom Abyss, Brutal Orchestra, Dave the Diver, Kyle is Famous, PIZZA TOWER 💜, Kardboard Kings, Sea of Stars, and Paper Planet.
The previously listed games have all come out very recently and show that Developers still are and will prosper given the opportunity. I also would like to reccomend some more a little earlier than that list for your enjoyment :) :
A Hat in Time, Spelunky 2, Atomicrops, CrossCode, BPM Bullets Per Minute, Inscryption, One Step from Eden, and Into the Breach.
Play the games in those two lists, and you will have some of the best experiences there are to have in gaming.

"Everyone has been saying that video games are dying, but I don't think it has to be that way." I believe it does, in order for the garbage aspects of gaming to dissapear we have to let the gaming industry die.
last time this happened we got nintendo with the entertainment system. this time we still have indie developers making great games.
if industrialized games die we still have the ones that do it because of passion and those will never die even if the big ones do.

"The most fun you can have online." That what "PC gamer" spoken about Team Fortress 2...
One of the best titles of casual gaming in my opinion.
And now, 17 years later, we are rotting in the corner. 80% of the "active players" are just bots made to profit from TF2's accessible economy, aimbots fill casual matches and Valve refuses to do anything about it, they just package (AND PROFIT) content made by the community.
At least 15k/25k players is not bad for a game released in 2007... But this is not a reason to they leave us to rot.

Ive played SOO many amazing indie/small studio titles in my time that are so full of the life of the designers and developers, its the reason I want to make it my profession. Being able to make others feel the things I do when I play my favourite games is what I strive to do in my life.

My job, full time, is to make Roblox games. The exact games you described as the epitome of bad. And as someone who grew up with the examples of good games you showed, that recognized maybe half of the titles you used to illustrate that, it f----kin hurts to have to work that job. Because it is awful.
I'm glad to see so much people united by their love of this wonderful medium under a beautiful testament to it. May one day the games that prevail be beautiful and polished, and not the things that corporations try to shove in our gullets.

Honestly, said everything all of us are thinking about (though nobody else seems to talk about).
As a game developer with soon-to-be 4 years of experience, it is really sad to see how many predatory and greedy tactics big games use nowadays... And that's not to say that games are getting worse, but rather that the game developers are getting greedier (though usually its the publishers, and usually its the big public companies that have a lot of shareholders specifically). A lot of these go unmentioned, some of them cause public lash-out but are never removed... At a certain point the consumers have accepted it, which is not a good thing.
That said, recently, especially with the rise of godot's popularity and it's capabilities, many devs have found a new spark of inspiration. Even Brackeys, one of the biggest faces in the online game dev community, has said that recently he's fallen in love with game dev again, and other people are doing what they can to promote passionate game devs (such as the triple i initiative). And with the greed of the big companies becoming far too apparent to go unnoticed (especially whatever the hell is going on at Ubisoft), maybe that marks the beginning of a new era... where games are once again fueled by artistic passion, not by greed or search of fame. It does worry me that with the rise of AI-generative tools there will be more games made for nothing but profit, the type of game that has no thought put into it, no effort or passion... Which will only make the oversaturated market problem more severe.
I am hopeful for the future, yet i cannot help but feel worried. Though i do hope that through combined effort we can circumvent the possible future where games are primarily made with AI

Omori is one of my favorite games, bout cried just from seeing Sunny's face. I also grew up on Minecraft, on watching people play psychological horror games, the ones that make you think about not just life but what it can and is for others. This is exactly what I like about situational horror (which I know isn't what this video is about), the way that it reminds us that we and others are human. Even if Omori didn't have any of the jump scares or occasional horrific art, it's still a horrific and comforting reminder that we are all human and do shitty things out of fear, ignorance, and emotion. Those games are always the most meaningful in my mind because they make me feel so alive, and forces me to remember that others are too.
