Can i be annoying nerd for a second? 🙏 - Ocram wasn't really made by Terraria devs, it was made by separate team of people who worked on old-gen console ports back then, and the boss was part of console exclusive content batch (spoiler: it was mostly reskins/recolors of existing stuff, but people still love it to this day god bless this community) - Red commented on Otherworld petition that it would rather take some legal matters to deal with in order to release, mainly due to fact that Otherworld was also developed alongside with whopping 2 studios in total, so petition thing possibly was a joke taken too seriously - Afaik ability to hook on trees is still in the game, Zoologist NPC sells the only hook that is able to do that Great vid btw! Bummer that weapon coloring turned out meh, it's something i'd love to mess around with novadays
The story of Starbound is also super interesting, although a lot less happy. These days it's not really considered a proper competitor to Terraria anymore :(
Glad my friend showed this game to me 10 years ago. Also glad I decided to stick to it til this day. Terraria is truly a very special game. Modded mention 🎉
I'm blessed to already be married to a beautiful woman who likes games! We didn't meet over game related things, but still. She's smart and open to helping me develop games in the future! Best of luck to you.
Definitely the dream for most guys as well. To find a woman as into gaming as they are. Even more so, (at least for me) to find someone who would want to develop them as well. Most gamer women I have met usually only exclusively play Minecraft, Stardew, or Sims lol. Or, eugh... Valorant and Overwatch.
About free updates, they may be free but they still earn you money by making it clear that the game is still cared about which not only attracts people to buy but it allows you to maintain a given price. You generally expect that the cost to value of a game will decrease over time (as you slowly capture more players at a better price), the lazy way is to decrease the price, the better way is to increase the value. So free updates don't need to be paid because they will still earn you money, they may have earned more from 1.3 being free than charging everyone 50 cents. You should release a game where if someone buys it they will have a complete experience, they won't think that there should be more content, but you can just add in everything that didn't quite fit in to the core game later on (content in updates doesn't have to adhere to the core design as strictly, I'm planning April Fool's updates which add weird mechanics, I get to add it and it fits in as its own thing). The game I'm working on I have a mountain of content, 80+ hours of levels, but that's a huge amount of work to actually implement, I'm going to skim off the best 20 hours make a complete game with that and I can then add 10 hours of extra content a year for 6 years over which time I will have made more, I can keep the price where it was (I could even choose to track the price with inflation and be justified in doing so) and I can avoid having to give substantial discounts. I also dislike sequels if they don't have a good reason to exist and this extra content doesn't really fit into a sequel, it would be more like DLC but I dislike DLC, free updates would work far better - I do have the idea for a sequel for this game which has substantial changes.
Wholesome story, I appreciated the edits and how you made a decent try at an Oz accent, from an Oz. The story about them getting married would be an awesome outcome, but I just really want to create games, that and it’s games like Terraria that are inspiring haha.

Holy cow the lunatic cultist exists now SO yea I then beat it by cheesing moon lord and yea that was terraria for me. Crazy.
One thing about Red's return to terraria that I think deserves mention: after he decided to leave the project, 505 games offered to port it to consoles. When the console versions were announced, it was also announced that they'd be receiving "brand new" content not available on the PC, and for a period of time we thought that was the last new content Terraria would receive. I always thought that was one of the big reasons Red decided to develop the game further, seeing how excited people were to see more of this game and getting ideas for how he would want to develop it further from... well, seeing what not to do, lol.
5:40 while one could call that "optimization", that kinda gives a false impression of making things faster, or more memory efficent. This I'd call "software engineering" (the act of thinking about software architecture to provide an extensible and maintainable code base). 6:50 just saying google sheet is WAY better for this than excel. nobody want's to programmatically extract data from an xlsx file (some of us HAVE to, but nobody wants). for google sheet: just use the api to download it as a CSV file, your data will be automatically up-to-date, csv is easy and fast to parse....
I feel like the history and begining of terraria shows why it is such a good game. Having someone like redigit who is both passionate about his game, but willing to let others help is really what sets terraria appart.

I too have played Terraria and want to marry a fellow game dev person some day. Also, wow. You tricked me into watching the same video twice, but it was worth it.
This video has made me realize, but community discussions about updates between Minecraft and Terraria are very night and day. It might be because of what’s changed, because of the amount that’s given, or because of who runs them, but Minecraft updates for the past few years are generally negative or just spark a lot of debate, while Terraria generally doesn’t get the most hate/backlash for updates, or the small amount of hate it gets dies down very fast. The most angriest I remember the community was because they were updating console terraria, removing a lot of the nostalgic features (I was one of those sad it left) and some people hating certain respites/name changes (the Fiery Greatsword to the Volcano, for example).
When I first saw the dynamite rabbits on guide's recipe, It was fukkin diabolical. I thought the game dev is a psychopath, as time went by. I started to find it funny while remembering I've been killing them in accident
Did I watch this video already? I'm getting some serious deja vu. I seem to even remember writing out a comment about how changing IDs to an enumeration is technically not "optimizing".
