The follow-up video is here!! ua-cam.com/video/lFPuaa9gH_k/v-deo.htmlsi=k84Fm3juwan973ai
To clarify, it's not that I believe we should all be starving artists and walk around being pretentious about our creations. I'll still be making compromises with what I make in order to monetize (for example, a few of you will notice ads even in this video--I tried to set them so they would have rather cheeky timing, see if you can catch what I did😉)
My message here is really about striking the balance, so that both our hunger to create and our hunger for food can be satisfied

This was incredibly refreshing. I'm a small creator, and have noticed alot of the 'Pyramid scheme' stuff you describe towards the beginning of the video. I've noticed on alot of 'Small creator' communities, alot of this stuff seeps in. Alot of people are looking for community, and when the community is built on rubbing your small success in other people's faces.
You're cool man. Would LOVE to talk to you about this kind of stuff :)

My opinion may differ from many or this creator. It's rough economically/prosperity wise but even more rough if you are only dead-set on a job in media/content. To add on to the "money as a motivator" aspect..people will come off as a lot more authentic if they aren't as stressed with youtube/whatever being their only source of income to pay the bills. If that's all you want to eventually do, realistically get there by supplementing with a normie job..and then break away when you can in a risk-calculated way (get more financially savvy). If you get to that point, see how far you can ride it out and try to keep your expenses in control. I feel like you'll have more success with a stable base underneath you. Of course there are people who can take off immediately but I would say there's tons of skills from different jobs you can port over to content creation. Ultimately, whatever avenue you take, be okay with knowing it will still be a "job" and takes work. Keep striving for a balanced life that affords you time to make your dreams a reality while accepting the realities of life and honoring your mental and physical health. Get good a managing your projects and keep them feeling fun and liberating with enough "small wins" to keep you going. Often times there's a lot of workflow and organizational tedium that will roadblock you but try to visualize your progress and keep framing your progress as a reward and you'll surprise yourself. Progress not perfection, keep outdoing yourself and have fun with the process and journey more than anything else.

As someone who grew up with UA-cam in the early 2010's, this feels different. Back then, there were little to not rules and no one knew what the fuck they were doing. Then things changed slowly after Google bought it. After a while, things became more corporate and kinda screwed everyone over. Now, people are starting to break free of that and are starting to make new content they enjoy while still under threat of that system. With all the resources we have now, a lot of the good videos can really stand out in quality as well! We're trying to grow a garden in a wasteland, and hopefully this will lead to a Renaissance.

I want to create, I think I've always wanted that. The first step for me is being able to sit, record my voice, and talk to a community for a video. Today, i sat my phone down and didn't hit record, but I simply spoke as if it were my first intro video. That might sound cringe to most, but it was a pretty important step for me personally. I hope that in the future, on my own channel, I can come back and show a community that I'm happy with this video. Contrasted with an intro I do hit record on. Telling people this pushed me to take the first most important step. Thank you.

22:27 the part where you said "art is society" touched something within me. it was a belief i resonated strongly with in the past but i lost touch with it as i grew. i stopped believing in art, started convincing myself that i was supposed to do other things that were more "important". i started seeing and critiquing the things i've created by looking at them on the surface level, just as products, started to dismiss my old art as something small i used to do to "pass time". but after watching this, it made me remember how art made me feel. not just creating, but also witnessing and experiencing others' works, and how it had the power to shake me to my core. that strength and connection that i felt which came with the experience of art. thank you for rekindling something within me again.

I’m 21 now and since I finished that project I’ve felt like it was not worth releasing since the industry is saturated, the algorithm won’t favor me, or nobody cares about the type of music I’m making (even though I truly believe this project is the best I’ve ever done and is representative of myself). But this video kinda lined up with my own thoughts on the subject (recently, at least). I think I just needed someone else to say it for me to truly believe it. Yooo thanks so much for the shout out! It really warms my hear to my video being called inspirational. Someone recently commented on that Emergent Narrative video by saying that it helped them feel more confident about the style of content they want to make. It's enough to make a guy tear up.
I only expected a handful of views when I started recording my thoughts about Daggerfall, but I had the feeling of needing to "get this off my chest" and share my thoughts with whoever would listen. Seems like being passionate is half the battle.
Incidentally, my real passion is writing, but my faith in myself on this front has diminished as my time gets swallowed up by my day job and now content creation. So in a way this video was inspirational for me as well, as I've come to realize just how many people are out there waiting for your passion project to make its way to them.

I went into this video thinking it'd be another inspirational piece on romaticising your life, building a business and audience, making money selling attention to advertisers - which is fine, but often ends up feeling like an ad for content platforms. There is so much in this video that resonates: the critical engagement with media, the questioning of purpose, intention, and authenticity, the spiritual elements, all of it. And on top of that you express things so eloquently and succinctly - WHILE PLAYING?? I thought this was a voiceover until I saw you mess up. That fear of others not liking your work or you looking back at your own work someday and cringing is debilitating! The only way you can convince yourself that it's better to be done than perfect is by taking a breath and just posting the thing you've made. And letting the world and the feeling of finishing something once and for all prove it to you.

When you spoke about dharma and one’s calling in life, it really struck a chord with me.
Ever since I was about 10 years old, I wanted to be like the creators of UA-cam’s golden years and be able to make other people laugh & smile, just like they did for me. I wanted to be able to share my love for my favorite games and art with others. For one reason or another, -either lack of time, money or knowledge, -I shelved that passion and desire to create to focus on other “more important”but less fulfilling things in my adolescence through my early 20’s.
In the past two years, I’ve been streaming as a VTuber, building a small community. I’ve even tried learning how to edit recently in my small amount of spare time, which is something I find I love.
While I’m nowhere near “successful” or even in a place to be able to leave my day job to be able to able to pursue this full time, content creation something that’s genuinely changed my life for the better, and it’s something I genuinely feel called to.
I can’t say this enough - thank you for making & posting this video. It’s something I really needed to hear in this period of my life, and this video is really motivating for someone just starting their journey 🩷

This video made me cry, I have been wanting to become a UA-camr ever since I was a kid but never had the opportunity or equipment to make the things I wanted to make, now that I am an adult with a computer and a brain I let my mind run wild, thank you so much for this video, it really has encouraged me to keep trying!
Also, I wanted to add something about the "become successful fast" topic that a lot of people think about when it comes to making content:
I do like that you mention culture being an important and impactful part of our recent world, but I feel like there's a lot of people who see content creation as a way out of living the "hard life." I have met countless amount of people that have told me that they want to "work in marketing to get easy money and live the luxurious life" that we see in media nowadays, and frankly -- although I ultimately respect their decision and perspective on why they would want to do that-- I think its a pathetic way to view life. The world has become such a huge oyster for the "rich man controls the world" mentality that we have forgotten what it means to enjoy our existence. I loved the example of the Runescape Infinite Money Glitch bullshit, because its true! People want all the luxuries and all the accolades that money brings, but would rather find the easiest way to get rich instead of enjoying the process and how good it feels to EARN what you work hard for, the money becomes their sole purpose in life and they forget to enjoy everything else.
People forget the hardships and the process of success. It takes YEARS before you can reach an audience, my favorite example is Videogamedunkey, he started as a kid on Newgrounds making animations because he wanted to make art just like those people that he looked up to, he made voice overs, gameplay videos, edits, songs, things that he just finds silly and fun to him, and people loved that about him. It took him north of a decade to get to the position he is at, but the one thing that never changed for him was his passion for the things he made, and thats why his viewers still stick around, because not only do they enjoy the personality of videogamedunkey, but the effort and love he has for his craft.
Your first video will most likely not get a million views, and if it does then you are a rare case! but for the rest of us who are climbing our way to the top, we will get there eventually. Rome wasn't built in a day, y'know...! With that being said, I'll take that advice for myself as well, and thank you Neat for this extra push that your video has given me personally, and I hope it gives others that push as well.

I keep a select few videos in a playlist, in the event I ever start to lose motivation. They've helped me get myself into that mindset of "I should just do it because I want to." I think this video is going to go into that playlist. Sure, I monetize my videos, but I've also made drastic changes because the money wasn't enough to keep making those videos. It was the incentive that I can express what I want, when I want, however I want, that kept me going. I'm going to come back to this video once in a while because it's always nice to have that reminder.

I had the idea years ago to do a podcast where I record gaming B-roll simultaneously while recording the audio but don't really talk about what's happening in the game.
I never did it because I never knew what to talk about. My theoretical idea was to talk to friends for it, that way a conversation could be more natural, but I never got in a call with someone just to talk. I'd still like to make that, but the biggest issue is with having someone in that call because they only time I really have that chance is when I'm playing games with them, which necessitates talking about the game a lot, and at that point it just becomes the average Let's Play.
I have started streaming again, though, and I've been enjoying it, it's just not quite the same idea - but maybe that idea doesn't have to happen.
Or at least it doesn't have to be me. This kicks ass and is almost exactly what I was thinking.

Growing up my buddy would come over for a sleepover and we would play Sly Cooper, and we both had beaten it so many times that we almost never talked about the game, we were always talking about school or life or w/e. Occasionally we'd talk about our favorite part or laugh at our fuckups, but regardless the conversations were always organic. Before we decided we had different plans after high school, I would say that once we were in college we would turn it into a youtube channel. That's one of the earliest memories I have of having ambitions of making youtube videos

Honestly that was the most inspiring video i have ever watched in YEARS, so many famous creators talking about motivation on yt, but instead of actually helping, all they do is making me feel even more stressed and depressed, cuz it is all about how to get money and be selfish nowdays. The only thing that can actually make us happy is feeling useful by creating art, make poeple laugh, culture or making ur dreams come true, without caring how huge is ur comunity, but caring only about what comunity you draw to ur creations.Even if its only one person. My favourite phrase from the bible is " The present has enough problems on its own, u dont need to put up with the problems that MIGHT come in the future". I really needed to be reminded that by someone.

That’s not necessarily a good thing. They will probably flood the platform with tik tok type of stuff. It’s not all bad though. Not long ago, I was just noticing how many new sonic content creators were rising on UA-cam and how refreshing it was to watch videos where it wasn’t the same tired old arguments and takes from jaded gamers. And it’s not like these young guys were praising the bad aspects of games that everyone hates, they were still as passionate about older games, same as the old guard. Only this time, I didn’t have to listen to idiotic claims like “Sonic Adventure is only half good cause Big the Cat” or “Sonic 06, am I right?” or any of that other idiotic stuff. In fact, often times, these younger people who just took these games at face value, instead of growing up with them and inevitably getting disappointed by their own unrealistic expectations, were less biased and less likely to criticise something stupid, like the voice actors or the green eyes.
That’s not to say that I didn’t see younger folk with idiotic takes. Lots of them think Sonic Boom was a good idea. And lots of them are the politically correct, terminally online types. But overall I think I have enjoyed a lot of content that newer creators put out. Sometimes so much that I go to their channel, looking for reviews or retrospectives on other games in a series I like and being somewhat disappointed that they just started with the series and they didn’t get to a specific game I was looking to see their opinions on.

Not only has this been really tough to do so far, but when you spend 9 hours on a drawing and the only person that has even seen or cared about it is your wife, it can be very discouraging. I'm still posting every day, but this video really made me feel better about everything. I've always been interested in anything creative; music, art, voice acting, making UA-cam videos I'm passionate about, literally anything that someone's personal feelings can be put into, to make it their own, while being aware that these things are very unlikely to get me a successful career if I go in wanting a job, I always just, wanted to make stuff I think is neat that maybe others will like as well. Recently I've watched self-help videos, not the kind of toxic positivity you mentioned, I want to run and exercise a bit, save money for things, start dabbling in the creative mediums I never have. I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, and it's really hard to even start something, though from little things I've done in the past, it's easier to come back to and continue than to start, so I just need to kickstart my life to really start living. I can't tell how this video is so relatable, I've been on UA-cam for years now and I totally agree with you.
there's no "good" or "bad" moment to start on UA-cam or anywhere else, let's just remember that we have the chance to live in a society and in a time period where we are able to do what we like! So stop complaining about why we don't succeed or something.
Not to show up or anything but my success on YT was due to some chance I had back in the day because I was doing a certain type of video at a certain period when it was getting popular, so I'm the counter example here.
But even if I wasn't that popular or anything, it wouldn't have stopped me from doing videos. Sure though my channel would be probably a bit different, but with audience or no audience/ with monetisation or not, I never stopped producing the things I liked doing and now people are aknowledging it.
Honestly, I wouldn't have expected ANY of this if I was like 8 years ago when I started my channel, my first intention was to videos that I could rewatch in like 10 or 20 years for nostalgia (that's the litteral thing that pushed me to create a yt channel), and I never thought I could go this far. Monetization allowed me to enter an animation school where I could go further in my dreams and so produce more videos, but if that had never happened, I would surely have done a normal life while doing videos for fun and I would have been happy doing it too.
Anyway, that's an excellent video you got there (accompagned by a terrible Sonic gameplay haha 😂), but yeah I honestly think we need more authentic and sincere videos like this, this is what we miss in a place where everyone runs for money...

man, this was so great to hear.
the point about monetization going against creativity is something I notice all the time. over-editing and obvious retention/monetization tactics put me off so much. the thing that really keeps me engaged and interested in what someone has to say in a video is how passionate and interested they are in what they’re talking about. it’s easier to connect that way
I’ve always felt most comfortable/at home with video games and the gaming community, and making videos is a great way to think more deeply about them and share that love/interest. I’m lucky enough to have a job I’m content with, but it’s nowhere in the same ballpark as where my passions lie, and that’s why I make videos on the side for fun. you’re absolutely right in everything you said here, and I really admire the way you pursued what you felt was your calling.

I don't really know who's going to see this comment, but I need to say this more for me than I do for you.
This video couldn't have come at a better time because I've been putting this off. Deep down, I've felt scared about my own abilities as a creator. I'm a simple guy, just an artist obsessed with drawing my own little OCs and worlds. I'm also a massive Sonic nerd who likes video games.
Going on a mini tangent, I have a massive dream to create a franchise of characters that people will love, as I have for the characters I liked growing up. I want to make this my actual job one day. I was feeling a little down, wondering if it was even possible today. I don't usually focus on the numbers on social media, as I mainly view it as a vanity metric. However, recently, as I look at my stuff, I slowly started comparing it to the types of stuff other artists made, and I started wondering if I was even good enough to make it myself.
This video was a wake-up call for me, especially the monetization part. I don't want to say it gave me the motivation to do what I'm about to do next, as motivation is a very fickle muse, but it certainly helped give me clarity and a direction on what I need to do going forward.
I don't know when, I don't know how long, I don't even know where to begin if I'm being honest, but I know one thing-I'm going to do the best I can.
For those who did happen to read this, wish me luck.
