One of the greatest songs ever made … as someone said in a comment on it a few years ago, “Music used to be ugly people making beautiful music, now it’s beautiful people making ugly music.”
I used to live somewhere I could see the Southern Cross six months out of the year, and I miss it. Would love to see it from the ocean someday.

There’s so much good music still being made all the time. Every time I see comments like this I can only pity those so deprived.
I don’t think they’ve done The Pretty Reckless yet. But they should. Oh, they should. And Larkin Poe has some originals that would make a good chaser for something like this song.
And, honestly, Grace Slick and Stevie Nicks were VERY pretty.

He had hepatitis C, a liver transplant paid for by Phil Collins, five stents in his heart, and type 2 diabetes. According to the medical experts he should have died about 30 years ago. He quit everything except marijuana after he got out of prison. When his drug dealer died just after he traded the pink slip to his Mercedes for some cocaine, he figured he wouldn't be needing the car, so he broke into the dealer's house and stole his pink slip back so he could trade it with another drug dealer.🤣

Crosby ,Stills Nash ( and later Young) were of the Woidstock "hippie" era...no Southern Rock here. During this time before heavier rock, late sixties there was folk type sings. I was in my late teens when these guys were out . Time of peace, love and great music and a lot of "partaking" in what made the artists of that time more creative and the music more of an " experience " for the listeners( most ,not all) and I happen to think they were great looking people making great music...no so artificial as so much of later decades. Old music is the best ,had more talented people .

First, let me just say I love you two. Secondly, I'd like to tell you about one of my best experiences in life. I'm a long-time high school science teacher, and four years ago I lead a team of other teachers and students on a trip to Peru (Machu Picchu, etc.) It was a wonderful experience, but one special moment was the night we walked out at night onto a pier that went far out into Lake Titicaca. This was just adults, the teens stayed in the hotel. So a bunch of us, all gracefully aging hippies, walked to the end of the pier. We looked up at actually, for the first time in our lives, saw the Southern Cross. One of us summoned up the song on their cell phone, and we sang and danced to it, beneath the actual star formation. I'll never forget that night.

What an awesome experience - no doubt a 'one off' you'll always remember. I'm not too fond of this whole aging 'thing' ( turned 77 this past September ). However, I know one thing for sure - we had the best music of the 20th century hands down! CSN exemplifies some of the quintessential talent of that era.

The reference to the Southern Cross is a constellation visible in the Southern Hemisphere, not really having anything to do with Southern part of the US. This is one of my favorite songs ever. Harmony is beyond belief, and Steven Stills on lead is magic. The lyrics are celestial. "Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small, But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day." It speaks volumes to me.

    • @willdwyer6782

You can see the southern cross for a few hours each night as far north as 20ish degrees north of the equator from September to March. I've never been south of the equator, and I saw it when I was at Pearl Harbor in the navy in the '80s.

The southern cross points to the south pole just as the two end stars of the big dipper's cup line up to point to the north star (which represents the north pole as it is stationary, and it is the end star of the handle on the little dipper). Bit of trivia: The little dipper and big dipper appear to empty into each other.

One of my favorite CSN songs, ironic that it is one of the few covers that they included on any of their albums. Stills shines on this track and the group’s harmonies are effervescent! I lived in Australia for high school, did a lot of sailing, saw the Southern Cross…, whenever it was nightfall. This song brings back happy days in high school, sailing off the coast of Sydney and hanging out with my high school friends…, that were huge fans…, but this album hadn’t come out yet. 😊

This is not a Southern band. It’s a California band…the LA sound, actually. When they created CSN, they wanted to be able to sing harmonies so tight that it sounded like one voice! Stephen Stills is singing lead on this one. You should watch a documentary on how they got together and became a group. They are a Supergroup, coming from The Byrds, The Hollies, and Buffalo Springfield. Thanks to people like Mama Cass, they found each other. "Echo in the Canyon" from 2019 is a great documentary about the musicians who lived in or hung out together in Laurel Canyon in the late 60s. It was put together by Jakob Dylan, son of Bob Dylan and lead singer of The Wallflowers, who interviews a lot of the surviving participants of the day. There's also a great soundtrack that goes with it. In it, Jakob sings duets with musicians from both then AND more recent times, covering music of the period. Several artists such as Beck (not to be confused with the late Jeff Beck), It does mention CSNY, but the focus is on the "Laurel Canyon sound", which CSNY was a big part of. Highly recommended!

I'm so happy you listened to this one! It's actually my favorite out of all of the beautiful C,S & N songs. Glad you loved it! Stephen Stills, who sings lead, wrote this song after a terrible divorce, in which he was left with just his boat. He took off sailing the Pacific, and wrote this during the voyage.

Well sort of. He did take a boat trip after his divorce and when he wrote the lyrics he used that as an inspiration, but the boat trip and divorce were some time before he wrote this, and this song is actually a rewritten version of Rick and Michael Curtis' "Seven League Boots." Vale - David Crosby
One of the best & greatest Singer/Musicians has passed away aged 81.
Along with his mates Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young, Crosby created some of the most iconic late 60's & early 70's music.
I know they started in the mid-60's, though to me they epitomise WOODSTOCK.
The Vocal harmonies rival anyone else in the music world.
Their Guitar work and their sublime Bass lines were ground-breaking and ahead of their time.
Even as a very young child I knew their music was very special.

AAAAH! I'm so happy! I've been saying for a year y'all need to hear these guys for real! Their Woodstock recording of Suite Judy Blue Eyes not only sounds nothing like the studio recording, but the second and third movements aren't even on the live Woodstock recording, because it wouldn't have translated without the bass, drums, etc.
So you've heard the abbreviated and puny sound version of "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" and possibly THE most campfire/acoustic-feeling song they have, "Teach Your Children". Don't judge them as "easy listening" by just these songs. Imagine if you had decided what the Beatles were all about based on the first two or three songs you heard.
They do have songs that rock (especially when they're joined by Neil Young). At the very least, you'd call most of their catalog "folk rock" and not "easy listening" or even "soft rock". Maybe "yacht rock" lol. You gotta hear their version of Joni Mitchell's song, "Woodstock." It rocks; the Neil Young guitar lead right from the top is nice and crunchy. You gotta hear their version of "Wooden Ships" (cowritten by members of CSN and Jefferson Airplane); it's got a great kind of psychedelic feel.
Please listen to the studio version of "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", if not for a reaction, at least as a favor to yourselves. The studio version is an entirely different song, and far superior. They scored that Woodstock gig coming off one of the hottest debut albums of all time, but the Woodstock gig was not long after band formation, so they really weren't ready, and the recording was crap to boot.
Love y'all's music and movie reactions, as always!

This is one of Stephen Stills’ loveliest compositions. He is very hard of hearing, by the way, and has always managed to sing and play beautifully. A genius.

CSN&Y have so many great songs! This is a fav - if you want great harmonies you need to check out The Eagles’ “Seven Bridges Road” - I can listen to it on a loop!

🌉"Seven Bridges Road" is right behind Live, Acoustic version of "Hotel California" from Hell Freezes Over Concert as my All-Time Favorite Eagles songs... The song on Hell Freezes Over plays for a few minutes before the crowd recognizes it... I had a similar reaction first time I heard it... Was so striking, that I remember that Instant all these MANY years later🦅

We lost David Crosby the other day. Amazing he lived to be 81! He had a rough life and health for a long time. RIP to one of a kind.

From the album *Daylight Again* (1982). Jimmy Buffett frequently covers this song, which is one of my favorites. Another favorite is Carry On.
