Stephen Stills is one of the most underappreciated musicians of the past half century. Great vocalist, guitarist, writer, and producer. I first heard him in Buffalo Springfield, but he's been instrumental (no pun intended) in forming several other groups. Listen to some Manassas! By the way, he's the lead guitar on this song.
Stills is absolutely overlooked when discussing the best guitarists.
And underappreciated songwriter.
Agree and then there are his musical arrangements. He is a master.
PLEASE listen to some Manassas! That music has been rooting around in my head for 50 years!
He also has a major hereditary hearing loss and still sounds this phenomenal. He also plays the Hammond Organ on the recording. Phenomenal musician!
I remember listening to this in my sister's room as a kid. Shag carpet on the walls, bead and shells in strings hanging in the doorway, the smell of incense drifting through the air, and mom yelling "turn down that damn hippy crap" from downstairs. oh my....those were the days!!
What were u doing in my room u little stinker?? Lol u just described my teenage bedroom lololol😅
😊 it sounds like my house. Except it was my father yelling "Turn that God damn hippie music off!" "Jesus Christ why do they always have to scream!" So I saved up some money and bought a pair of Koss headphones. That ended that.
LOL...Everyone's mom must have used that same line!
I was just a kid when this came out, too, and my sister and brother and I would pretend to be hippies. One of us would play the role of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Beatles' guru, and order the others to sit in the lotus position and meditate.
My brothers had this playing in their room and my sister and I would go in. Susie sometimes but me always dancing around minus the decor add posters instead
Stephen Stills. One of the most underrated guitarists ever.
After seeing Crosby, Stills and Nash live in the late 1990's I can fully attest to this. Stills guitar playing live was astounding and I had been listening to his music for years but never live. It was a completely new experience. I remain blown away decades later.
they were never underrated.
I love their music. Always have their harmonies were so good. Rest in peace, David Crosby 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Yeah, David was the wild child, it's amazing he lived as long as he did.
@@bkm2797 I know that's right
@@bkm2797that transplanted liver helped him, but he blew thru that one too. Another case of a liver going to an aging alcoholic instead of some younger, less famous regular dying person. Hmph. Happens all the time, but it’s still wrong.
Another song where I’m reacting “I grew up at the right time”. The 1970s had more incredible music than any decade. I’m lucky. And I’m happy y’all liked this.
Indeed - well said
The harmonies were spot on with this song, and that "nasty" guitar work was Stephen Stills.
Nobody harmonized quite like CSNY. They really set the bar high. And all their music was meaningful. Just a joy to listen to. Thanks for reacting to this one. Have a great night.
All musical geniuses … 💕💕💜💕💕
I agree they have amazing harmony but I don’t think they an hold a candle to the Eagles. Seven Bridges Road is the ultimate harmonization.
I'd say they are equal in talent, especially harmonies. But you are certainly entitled to your opinion.
@@tammycosby4495 I really don't think they were competing.
Listen to Ohio
So glad you enjoyed this one. If I had a time machine, I'd take you both back to those times, you'd have loved it!
WHAT ?
I was about to say the same thing. I am forever grateful to have lived during this era. From their first album in '69 ( still have it ) to listening to them now on UA-cam, with young folks reacting to their magic, I've been there with them. There's just one puzzling question that keeps popping up: I was 24 years old in 1969 - my next birthday I'll turn 78...where the hell did all that time go???
I don't think they'd get a very warm welcome in that era. That era had exceptional music, but horrendous civil rights/race relations
@@_Booker_DeWitt In America yes, in the UK, no. I'm from the UK.
No AUTOTUNE..just glorious real talent. Im lucky to have witnessed this bliss!
In addition to the clearly existing talent is the huge amount of dedication and HARD WORK, both as individuals, and as a group.
This whole album is worth your time. Not a concept album, but put together in a way that takes you on a journey, but not an unfamiliar one. Deja Vu is not just a clever title. I love that you love it, but there's more to love.
CSN&Y is a collection of some of the best artist musicians the world has ever known. David Crosby of the Byrds; Stephen Stills of Buffalo Springfield and Manassas; Graham Nash of the Hollies; and Neil Young of Buffalo Springfield. They all had solo careers and also came together as CSN&Y to create music that will forever enrich all of us. Thanks for this.
Good one guys!! You know how to warm an old Hippy's heart and make her day.
I'll second that! One of my favourite tracks from my favourite album ever 💞
Make sure you listen to the entire album start to finish. One of the best albums ever.
It's Deja vu all over again . Song really holds up over 50 years later.
Great joke... I got it! 😂
Stephen Stills is the creative power of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Their harmonies are stellar, but on their first album, he played every instrument except for drums, and occasionally bass. He's an exceptional guitar player, had a soulful voice and was a marvelous composer as well. And he has genetic deafness that started to affect him as a child - so how did he create and perform so spectacularly? He's a treasure.
Still's played such beautiful bass melodies
Carry On was on the Deja Vu album. It included all members, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. A great song!! The guitar was, Young!!!!
NY didn't play or sing on this one
@@gotham61 ua-cam.com/video/uGfObA0bgT0/v-deo.html
@@gotham61 Who's playing the guitar riffs? Keith Richards?
Stephen Stills.
@@pulsarlights2825 Stills
that blasting harmonization in the middle of the song sends chills up my spine. just frickin' amazing
I had enough nerve to do this to karaoke people loved the change from the usual todays monotony ❤
@@60sbaby456 yeah i'm a 70 year old rock and metalhead and bassist that almost gave up on finding good new stuff to listen to. nothing on mainstream radio but the usual hip hop , rap crap and pop music by the american idol crowd. BUT - 6 years ago i discovered a genre of music i never would have known existed if not for youtube. japanese all female rock and metal bands ! don't laugh - just watch the video for the song 'holy war' by the band LOVEBITES at zepp diver city tokyo in 2020 and you will have found the most amazing girl group that ever took the stage. no growling and screaming and they sing in english. more talent in one band than i've seen in 30 or more years. 60 songs - all self written - all masterpieces with NO bad songs
Crosby, Stills and Nash have the best harmony. Great reaction. Amber fantastic description of CSN. Please check out "Our House" & "Ohio"
Yes, and also "Marrakesh Express"
"Ohio" hasn't lost any of its impact...I was in college in Canada when that happened but it was still a disturbing wake-up call not unlike the deaths at the Altamont Festival the year before.
@@coinneachmaclellan3121 My sister was at Kent state when it happened and witnessed it all.
@Richard2003 These days it's quite common to see media coverage of security forces firing indiscriminately at groups of people, not to mention all the mass shootings that have become so common, but back then it must have been profoundly shocking for those who witnessed the Kent State shootings.
Or bliss out to “Love The One You’re With.”
Y’all haven’t done Wooden Ships. Amazing harmonies and powerful lyrics. And the opening lyrics are right up your alley.
“ If you smile at me I will really understand
'Cause that is something everybody everywhere
Does in the same language”
Young is in this song. He's singing harmony and sharing the lead guitar breaks with Steve Stills.
Doesn't sound like Neil's phrasing anywhere here. On Almost Cut My Hair, he and Stephen trade off and blend in torrid soloing, but I don"t think Neil's on this one.
@@georgestevens1502 yeah I agree, he isn't credited on the liner notes on this song at all.
I’m so lucky that I can hear this track and it takes me instantly back to my Hippie youth and all the feelings that were in the air during those times. The journey isn’t done and much of the same work still needs to be completed, but music like this can remind us of the original intentions. Love and Peace. ✌️
I believe it's Steven Stills on guitar. He wrote this song by putting an unfinished song in the beginning and Questions, which was a Buffalo Springfield song at the end
Good Catch!
I believe this is actually 2 songs. The first one os Carry On which is followed by Question. The 2 songs are connected by a musical bridge. Love both songs!
Correct! It was to inspire cohesion of the group.
Amber's giggle there at the end says all there is to say! 😁 ❤
That is Stills on the main acoustic and the lead electric guitar as well, and he also plays the organ on this track.
Very under-rated wah wah pedal player too. Besides both CS&N and CSN&Y albums, he does great wah wah work on Super Session, his early solo albums and with his later band Manassas.
This Album...! The whole album will forever hold a special place in your heart
Graham Nash is the vocal gold in the harmony. You should check out the album Songs for Beginners.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Almost Cut My Hair - is a must play. Such a great song. Peace!
Once again…an album cut that really must be appreciated by listening to the entire LP from start to finish. And Young is instrumental to the song, some pun intended. This is on my shelf, I bought it the day it was released. Over 50 years later, still pristine.
Carry On is a perfect 10. A masterpiece. Over the top great.
Thanks, J & Amber. All your subs (and visitors) got a piece of the pie today. 🙏🏼👏🏾
Amber, you really got into this, Jordan did too, good to see y’all really enjoying it.
The Deja Vu Album is my #1 favorite album of all time. Even though I like me some Disturbed, Metallica, John Denver, Commadors, Heatwave, Peter Gaberial, The Who, and SRV. So I am all over the place. But this album speaks to me of a time and feeling that we will never see again. Guess I am just getting old. Love you guys! Thanks for all you do!
Jay & Amber, You'll love CSN's "Marrakesh Express"!!!
edit- correction-Carry On is on a Crosby, Stills Nash & Young album but Young isn't on this album track.
“Carry On/Questions” is actually the opening track of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s “Deja Vu” album.
“Questions” is actually a reworked Buffalo Springfield song written by Stephen Stills. Buffalo Springfield, of course, also featured Neil Young.
On a personal note, Stills & Young first met in my hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Add Joni Mitchell, and you've got a Canadian triumvirate!!
Except Neil Young isn't playing on this track. This was recorded when the band was having difficulties with each other and it was hard to keep it together.
@@allengator1914 Nevertheless "Carry On/Questions" is part of the CSNY canon.
@@allengator1914 Neil Young also didn't play on the original Buffalo Springfield version of "Questions" as he had already left the band when Stills recorded it.
Yes, I didn't totally register this until recently, but there are various forms of misinformation out there as well. The album track is called "Carry On" and makes no mention of "Questions" being integral to it, though it obviously is. In one online source, it states that Stills "wrote" this song after being told the band needed a strong opening track for the album "Deja vu". But clearly, he didn't write much that was new, instead incorporating two previous compositions with a bridge that features the "carry on" lines. The finished product is very strong, but I don't think many CSNY fans are aware of the song's origin. Stills wrote "Questions" and recorded it solo except for Richie Furay adding a bit of acoustic guitar and harmony vocal. It's one of his strongest songs, and I still prefer his version of the song in the original Buffalo Springfield album, probably the last song he did for that group as it was falling apart.
I think Amber is a Flower Child at heart... :-) Great song, great reaction to it!
My favorite CSN&Y song. One of the best songs ever, imo. Such a groove.
My favorites on this album are Carry On/Questions, Everybody I love You, and Woodstock. I think they all had that "wooden" sounding electric guitar.
Such a Classic from These Guys! Just Iconic! And with some Iconic Harmonies too! :) Just LOVE IT! So nice, and So Glad to hear It Again! Great Reaction, You Guys! ... Change of Pace mid-song was a Surprise, No? Have a Great Week Ahead! :)
I've known and loved CSN(&Y) since I was a kid! The vocal multi-tracking is always so great. There is a 'double punch-in' about 2:30-2:40 on "To sing the blues..." that is just an artifact that makes it all-the-more real.
One of my favorites by them!!
This song is the definition of GROOVY!!! Truly iconic!
Magical song, one of my all-time favorite songs, can't help but sing along to it every time it plays. The changeup to Questions is just musically otherworldly!
This is my all-time favorite of theirs. Love the groovy wacka guitar in the second half.
You two would have fit right at Woodstock. ✌ Thanks for your reaction, guys. Take care and be well. Peace.
Stephen Stills plays both guitar and organ on this recording
Stephen Stills - vocals; guitars; bass; organ; percussion
That is the great Stephen Stills on guitars, bass, organ and percussion. He also wrote it.
Yeah, but he originally wrote it for Buffalo Springfield.
@@allengator1914 Another great band!
They weren't just a "folk/rock"" supergroup. They were a SUPERGROUP. PERIOD. Most musicians I know who come from that generation will tell you that when you're ranking groups from the '60s, there's the Beatles, and then there's Crosby, Stills, and Nash (or CSNY). Everybody else is competing for 3rd. I can't say I would dispute that.
Déjà Vu is one of my top 10 albums of the 70s. It is a magnificent piece of songwriting and musicianship 🤘
My favorite CSN song, released in 1970, and one that I thought Amber would like because of its trippy hippie sound. Another hippie-ish group with great harmonies that y'all should get back to is the Mamas and the Papas. Try their song "Twelve-Thirty" from 1968.
CSN has a great sound.. if you want more, try " Southern Cross" another great one.
Great harmony! As always ❤❤
One of my Top Ten albums of all. I can remember my parents dancing to this. They loved
CSNY,Elton and the Beatles. I was 19 when this album came out in 1970. When my sisters and I hear this, we remember our parents dancing with their 5 daughters
You can’t be in a bad mood listening to CSNY ❤
Even when Neil plays Don't Let It Bring You Down.
Great reaction. But this song is actually the opening track in the album which you are showing the cover of in the video you are reacting to: DEJA VU. Which as the cover shows was a Crosby, Stills, Nash *AND* Young album. In fact, the first album featuring Neil
Young. Just FYI.
Also, I think that was Steve Stills on guitar. Also, I think that was the short version of the song. The long album track is better.
Stills did the first lead break and then the wahwah work at the end. Young played teh middle break and added some work at the outro.
Listen to Steven Stills 'Nothing to Do but Today' if you want to hear some definite grooved guitar work
While in college I listened to this group constantly and saw them in concert several times. Thanks for playing this.
Some people think it is Neil Young on guitar…. It is not. That is Stephen Stills. Young does not appear on this track even though it appears on a CSNY album.
Almost certainly Stephen Stills on guitar and a bit of Neil Young. Check out Wooden Ships! One of their most underrated songs
Young didn't play or sing on this one.
Stephen Stills plays most of the instruments on this song himself. No Neil Young on this one.
@@magneto7930Stephen played every instrument except drums on this track!
@@kona883 I pretty much said that, but yes. I was mostly pointing out that Neil Young is not on this recording at all.
FYI, this song was on the "Deja Vu" album which was Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. It wasn't just C,S,N, as a matter of fact it was Neil Young on the Guitar Jay liked so much.
Awesome song !! One of my favorites ! It takes me back to the seventies, my hippie days with bell bottom jeans with patches and embroidering with suns and rainbows and flowers 🌸 ❤️❤️❤️🤟🏼✌🏼🖖🏻🐇🪽
Don't forget Neil Young. This was Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
But Neil Young didn't play or sing on this one.
Such beautiful voices
Stills took two songs - (one being the song Questions[1] he'd written for and recorded with Buffalo Springfield), and edited them together with parts of a jam session from a few days earlier, to produce one finished piece.
The song is noted for the Bridge section that makes a transition from a faster to slower tempo, with the lyric lines sung in Acapella: "Carry on,/ Love is coming,/ Love is coming to us all".
Session drummer Dallas Taylor: "Stephen combined two unfinished songs and stuck them onto a jam we'd had out in the studio a few nights before, me on drums and Stephen on a Hammond B-3 organ".[2]
The song was also an inspiration for Led Zeppelin, whose track "Friends"[3] on Led Zeppelin III is generally seen as being inspired by it, including a similar slack-stringed C-tuned acoustic opening
I don’t think anyone was prepared for how awesome these men would be together. Great songwriting, Stephen’s guitar genius, incredible harmonies. CSN were a revelation.
Amber, If you want to hear an otherworldly display of their harmonies, you’ve gotta hear “Guinevere”!!! You wanna talk about going to another place! That song is one of the most hauntingly beautiful melodies I’ve ever heard in my entire life and easily ranks as one as one of my top five as Jay would say 🤭Seriously though I dare say that I’ve never heard such beautiful harmony and melody in any other song from that genre that I can think of🤷🏻One of my all time favorites😌✌️🫶
Stephen Stills is a prolific writer and performer. I especially like the double album “Manassas”
Listening to the radio back in the day CSN&Y sounded like nothing else. Just great on so many levels
Such a COOL song! They had such a beautiful sound with those gorgeous harmonies. I had the privilege of seeing them live about 15 years ago.
Wait! Neil Young was definitely on this LP-- look at "& Young" on the cover! He wasn't on the previous 1st LP. "Carry On" was released as the B-side Of "Teach Your Children" (#16 peak) in 1970. "Carry On" did not get a separate charting the the Billboard Hot 100 but was played on rock radio.
My favorite song my CSN&Y. Crosby and Nash harmonies were the best in the rock era.
Little hippie Amber girl. 👍❤🤙
this particular incarnation of the band involved NEIL YOUNG; and, as another member of csn remarked, "adding neil young to the band is like adding dynamite to the mix".
Stephen Stills not only played most of the instruments, but sang lead on most of CSN songs. He is singing lead on this. His voice is very distinctive. Crosby and Nash were great also. Rest In Peace, David Crosby. 🙏
How about “HUMMINGBIRD” 😊❤YOULL LOVE IT!!!!!!!!
Stepehen Stills did most of the great guitar work for the group. He was a master of about six different instruments.
How good is this music. 50+ years later this is viable for the playlist!!
This is my favorite of all their songs. ❤. Can't get enough of it
The harmonies are top notch. The instrumentals don’t really get enough attention.🖖🏼🍻
Definitely great psychedelic music from my time. Thanks for your videos and insights on the music from the past. Jay and Amber Y'all just keep rocking.
❤ Crosby, Stills & Nash harmonies. They were so awesome.
A true masterpiece!!! I love this song from the bottom of my heart!!!
Now this is my kinda jam , boomers had the best music JMPO 🤷🏻♀️ the harmonies are always on point ♥️
Hey don’t forget Young. Neil Young adds a darker side to CSNY.
Exactly. Don’t know how they missed this, since it’s right there on the cover. This is *not* Crosby, Stills and Nash. This is the first track from the very first Crosby, Stills, Nash *AND* Young album (which followed the first CS&N album).
@@RabbiSteve but Young isn't on the album track of this song.
CSN&Y at their finest!!! Oh how I played this album (Deja Vu) to death back in the day. One of my all time favorite albums.
Stills' chops on the B3 are nearly as excellent as how he plays guitar. Had both the vinyl and CD of this great album. Dig all the other 'hippy music' comments - priceless.
Hey guys! it is Sephen Stills who plays the wah wah on this track. I don't know the reason why you guys are reluctant to play live tracks but the live version of Carry On. on the Four Way Street album takes it to a new level. If you have the chance to put it for reaction, you won't regret it at all. Have a big hug, a kiss to Amber alongside my blessings.
To be fair, Amber and Jay play a lot of live versions of songs. I think one of the main reasons why is that they don’t get flagged for copyright as much as the studio versions of songs. I could be wrong, but this is just a guess.
Live versions hardly ever meet the quality of the album versions. Many suggest live versions, and they usually are not even close to the album version. Some even sound horrible. Of course, there are great live versions out there.
Stephen Stills is a prolific writer and won of my favorites,Especially the double album “Manassas”.
@@Sweetish_Jeff_ You may be right but I'm subscribed to several reaction channels (because I love to see young people reacting to good music and slowly get off the today music, which is BS in paste) and I do not see them having problems with it. In the case mentioned today with Carry On, the live version is very well recorded despite the time passed. On the other hand, I do not believe studio recordings are better than live performances; on the opposite, during live performances, the artists show exactly what they intended to display and were limited to 3, 4 or 5 minuts tops, due to the space of the record. But that's me; perhaps others think differently, which is good.
They play live tracks all the time.
Honestly I like reactors to listen to the studio for a first time best. It’s what everyone heard when the songs came out
Their harmonies are so good, very pleasing to the ear. Good song. I suggest "Teach Your Children."
"Teach Your Children" is one of the best songs ever created. Truly inspired!
Stephen Stills played those clean guitar lines. He also was the individual voice calling with all responding in harmonies.
"Carry On" written by Stephen Stills, on the CSNY album "Deja Vu" (1970) and released that same year as the B side of the "Teach Your Children" single.
Stephen Stills - vocals; guitars; bass; organ; percussion
David Crosby - vocals
Graham Nash - vocals
Dallas Taylor - drums
Steven Stills sang lead, played lead guitar and wrote most of their songs like this one. Incredible.
And played organ and congas
, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. A great song!! The guitar was, Young!!!!
This is the Best CSN&Y Album...Thanks guys for this!
Though a live album, 4 Way Street
The electric guitar in the last segment, if I remember correctly, was Graham Nash. The lyrics of “Question” were about Joni Mitchell. She drove David Crosby and Graham Nash nuts because they would work 15 hours in studio to get 1 song almost right, and the come back to the house late and Joni would have dinner ready, the house cleaned and the laundry done, and then after dinner she would get her guitar or sit down to the piano and introduce them to the 2 or 3 songs she wrote that day while doing everything else.
Listen to the title cut and the final cut from her album, “Court and Spark”. Also on that album is a biographical piece, “Free Man in Paris”, about record producer, David Geffen - a true super hero of the creative arts.
The smiles on your faces said it all. Caught them in concert back in the 80's, when they toured the U.K.
There's no band that does the harmonies like CSN.
The harmonies are magical, and this music sends me back. ❤
Stephen Stills playing that lead guitar, Amber and Jay...lovin the shows, every one...thank you!
Guys Carry On was on the Deja Vu album which featured Crosby Stills Nash and Young. I love the studio version, but check out the live version on the 4-Way Street album. It’s a classic.
My oldest brother is ten years my senior, middle brother six.
When this came out oldest brought this home and sat both of us youngest and my mom down and "made" us listen.
Even my grown up mom was enthralled with the harmonies, with the production value(we didn't know it was called that yet).
Large among my life influences, musically, and socially.
Glad you enjoy CSNY----another great harmony song to check out----"Guinnevere"
Teriffic song...
Stephen Still was commonly the lead guitar player on CSNY songs. In their heyday, he was considered one of the top guitarists in the US.
Ever heard of a guy named Neil Young?
I saw them in concert at Constitution Hall about 1976-ish. They played a 3.5 hour concert, acoustic to electric to acoustic. It was AWESOME!!!
