The lyric in the song when he sings "she's all that I have left, and Music is her name" is a reference to Stephen Stills' actual sailboat named Music. For me, this is one of those songs that I wouldn't mind if it just kept going. It's too short.

I love how it truly is a suite, like a medley of several songs that are still all the same song (I'm thinking of classical pieces like Water Music or the Nutcracker Suite). It's beautiful... And kind of funny, because I think Stephen Stills wrote it Judy Collins, all about their love and how they should be together... He played it for her, she cried because it was wonderful, then immediately said, "But we're not getting back together."

This song is almost a ballad. Stephen is singing about a bad break-up. He gets on his boat, and heads for French Polynesia in the South Pacific, hence the sailing references "Sailing a Reach" and "Following Seas". The Southern Cross is a Constellation in the Southern Hemisphere. Sailors used it for navigation.

Hearing your comments about how music touches people. It is exactly how I feel when I listen to Blue October. The lead singer has had his struggles and is vocal about it.
    I recommend Fear.

David Crosby played the next door neighbor on the Rosanne Barr show. He also played with the Byrds in the 60’s. Neil Young also was in this group but left to become a solo artist.

Unique in the rock and roll world with their harmonies, they started as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Neil Young went out on his solo career as did the rest of the group over time leaving us harmony-less.

I saw CSN a couple of times in California on this tour as a high-school kid newly driver'd licensed. It was around the same time I discovered the Dead, Beat Farmers, Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Ray Vaughan. I always felt left out by "missing" the 60s. Looking back today, I'm glad there were such awesome folks playing live in the midst of the 80s pop wasteland. Your reactions are awesome - keep it up!

Fortunate enough to see him in early 80’s. The venue was Willie’s Opry House in Austin, TX. He sang a cappella. Not a sound other than his voice. Quite a special night!

Each of these guys are a huge part of music history, add in the work with Neil Young, a powerful group as well as individual accomplishments. Music trivia, the second concert CSNY played...Woodstock. Check out Helplessly Hoping.

Also in on the harmonies is the late great Mike Finnigan, B3 too. He played B3 on Jimmi's Electric Lady Land. Also, too, he was the leader of Taj Mahal's backup band the Phantom Blues Band.

CSN formed in 1968 shortly after Crosby, Stills and Nash performed together informally, discovering they harmonized well. Crosby had been asked to leave the Byrds in late 1967, Stills' band Buffalo Springfield had broken up in early 1968, and Nash left his band the Hollies in December. They signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records in early 1969. Their first album, Crosby, Stills & Nash (1969)
