I heard that Paul McCartney was once ranked Tim and Niel Finn as some of the worlds best song writers. They are!

Yeah it makes this video a little harder to watch, knowing what happened to him. He always looks like he's having fun in the vides.
This song hit me hard when I was a teen. The lyrics "In the paper today, tales of war and of waste but you turn right over to the T.V. page." speaks to the apathetic attitude of society at large. It made me consider why there are so many who don't care about anyone but themselves. The song is great, the lyrics are great, and I'm glad you guys finally reacted to it. Take care.

Distant Sun is my favourite. They sang it live on the Tonight Show and were awesome.

They're a band to whom so many pay homage... Neil Finn's voice is incredible to this day. This song was over-played on radio to a fault. A shame for those who didn't understand at the time, myself included. I've seen Neil Finn many times now thankfully. This song is just beautiful and... His voice Drops in and out gorgeously in this song. Perfection.

I was 21 after going through a breakup. For me, "Don't dream it's over" had the meaning, "Don't dream. It's over."

You certainly should not stop here as Crowded House , the Finn brothers and Neil Finn as a solo artist have produced such an amazing catalogue of work. Great melodies, great lyrics, great delivery. In good times or bad there is never a bad time to be listening to Crowded House.
Crowded House have quite a bit of quality material. 35 years later I still throw on "Weather with you", 'Mean to me" and "Better be home soon" among many others.

I'm glad you mentioned the Finn Brothers... Whether it was Split Enz, the Crowded House Woodface album or the Finn Brothers CDs, they sounded best when they were singing together.
Neil Finn has said that his favorite Crowded House song is "Into Temptation". It really is an amazing song. "Love This Life" and "She Goes On" have wonderful messages, in addition to amazing music.

Yeah, everything Trevor said! I would also suggest a few Split Enz tracks, too, with Neil and his brother Tim. Very 80's and 'Six Months in a Leaky Boat' and 'Dirty Creature' were big Mtv hits.
This song has a special place for me as it was playing the night before my high school sweetheart left for college in another state, while I went here. I was devastated, and we kind of left things open and uncertain at first, but will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary this September. So yeah, never dream it's over, guys. 😉

Every time I hear this song I think about that scene in The Stand. As the realization sets in that the world is changed forever, the two characters put the LP on the record player and play this song. Total 80’s nostalgia.

New Zealand’s own Neil Finn…one of the two legendary Finn brothers from Split Enz fame. Between Split Enz, Crowded House and Neil and Tim Finns solo work there are more hits and great songs than I can list here now. Who would have thought two lads from Te Awamutu would have had such an impact on the music world.
No doubting Neil Finn's talent but of course you don't mention the talents of Aussies Paul Hester and Nick Seymour as if they didn't exist... PS Tim didn't join the band till later.

This is actually a love song to lead singer Neil Finns wife, that no matter the hardships they can make it through. He has been married since 1982 to his wife Dawn Johnson. You might like "I've got You," by the Slit Enz, which features Finn and his brother Tim. One of the first videos I saw on MTV circa 1982.

I saw Neil Finn sub for Lindsay Buckingham at a Fleetwood Mac concert in 2017. He was fantastic filling in for Lindsay with Fleetwood Mac - but, the band also sang this song at that concert. AMAZING!!!

I was 17 when this song came out, my dad had died of cancer and this song gave me comfort. Now, I'm crying hearing it again 2 months after my sweet daughter passed away. I have loved this song for half my life and I need this song even more as my heart is broken and I'm broken with her gone.

The singer in crowded house was in the band Split Enz and spawned the hit "I got you" which is one of the best 80s songs. This song by crowded house is considered a one hit wonder but had another hit "Something so strong".
'Message to my girl' from Split Enz is one of my favourites of the eighties.

"Life in a Northern Town" by The Dream Academy.
It is a total Amber song and has a great story for Rob. It's about a popular British folk singer Nick Drake who died unexpectedly in the 70s of a drug overdose. He went on to be a legend/martyr/icon of British music after his death. Such a beautiful song
That song hits hard. I went to HS where Christa McAulliffe taught in New Hampshire, that song became our unofficial anthem after the Challenger disaster.
"Life in a Northern Town" is a terrific song, but Dream Academy's followup, "The Love Parade" -- which I've never understood how it failed to succeed on radio in the US or the UK -- remains to this day one of my favorite songs of all time.

Crowded House is one my all time favorites, brings me back to a time. I’ve seen them in concert, so much heart in their music. ❤️😁
The lead singer is Neil Finn from New Zealand, and was born and raised in Te Awamutu, as was i. He and his brother Tim formed a group called Split Enz in the 70s which was massive here and in Oz. Then when Split Enz ended Neil formed Crowded House with a few Australians and became pretty big for guys from this part of the world.

ALSO: Neil Finn (guitarist/singer) recently replaced Lindsey Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac for a tour.
Not for just a tour but as of right now a permanent replacement for Lindsey Buckingham due to issues between Lindsey and Stevie Nicks.

One of the best bands of all time. I firmly believe that if The Beatles had been formed in Australia in the 80s, they would have sounded like Crowded House. This is a rabbit hole you really need to dive into. They have so many amazing, lyrical, melodic songs that I can't even list them all... but here are a few. "World Where You Live", "Better Be Home Soon", "Fall At Your Feet", "Four Seasons in One Day", and "Not the GIrl You Think You Are". Neil Finn's voice is like sweet caramel, and it's only gotten better since the 80s. And FYI - there was a time when Neil Finn was a member of Fleetwood Mac! Paul, hate to break it to you, but Crowded House were formed in Melbourne, Australia. The only Kiwi in the band was Neil Finn, the other two were Australian (or one might have been American, can't quite remember), until Tim Finn joined them years later. But, unlike Split Enz (New Zealand band) Crowded House were an Australian band.
They were Split Enz formed in NZ before Crowded House.

I think you can see why those of us who grew up on the music of the 70s and 80s think we had the best music. There is such a difference between what was and what is.
It's not even a comparison... Not enough variety these days. I turned off commercial radio when the daily playlist got to 75% hip hop/R&B/Rap.
If you ever want to see a grown man tortured to tears just strap me to a chair and force me to listen to that crap. 😒
@@consciousbeing1188 It's even worse when it's heavily autotuned. I worked with a guy who seemed to ONLY listen to that stuff. The ones he listened to were so messed up. I've never heard worse autotune. How can anyone listen to that & not get sick of the fakeness? It makes me sick within the first 30 seconds.
@@BillGraper - I hear you, my guy... It's not just the fakeness but the lyrics are generally so superficial... there's no heart in music anymore... The fact that the big labels refuse to allow anything that could be construed as politically controversial anymore just proves that the music world, just like TV and movies, has become so controlled and indoctrinated that anyone with an IQ above room temperature just won't consume it anymore. I enjoy media that challenges my thinking but that's not allowed anymore. We're told what to think in so many forms that we're by and large regressing. I won't entertain ANY mainstream media anymore purely because I can see the covert censorship undermining legitimate and much needed discussions in favour of a narrative that only serves those with an agenda.

GR8 Aussie/New Zealander band. This song came out in 1986 when the Berlin Wall had not been taken down. This is so relevant to what is still going on today.

Some people say that this is a self reflective stament (of embarrassment) about how jaded we can become, such that we care more about selfish trivial indulgences than contemplating on greater troubles and injustices of the wider world.
Alternately, some say it expresses the feeling of hopelessness and emotional dispossession one feels when weighed down by the callous harshness and seeming cruelty of reality, and rather than focusing on these depressing things, you seek a moment of escape, so as not to be overwhelmed by it all.
Either way - both are equally profound commentaries.
Sadly, so few songs today have lyrics that provoke such deep personal introspection.

You remembered that the title of this song is "Don't Dream It's Over," not "Don't Dream, It's Over." You are exactly right: this song is all about not giving up and to keep carrying on, no matter how much life has beaten you down or how much it throws at you to trip you up, and how in the end, we'll win. Nicely done, and nothing but mad respect for your ability and instinct at interpreting songs you've never heard before!
Another new artist to react to would be Bruce Hornsby and the Range, "The Way it is," a great "piano" song, from beginning to end.

Their album Woodface is superb. Fall At Your Feet is another beautiful song of theirs, defo worth a listen. Great songwriter with a voice to match.
Their first three albums are all wonderful. I still listen to them to this day. I must say, however, that Woodface is the only one that has songs on it that I actually hate. "Chocolate Cake", "There Goes God", and "All I Ask" are ones I always skip.
Woodface is one of my top 5 albums ever. Putting in along side The Beatles "Revolver", ELO's "Time", and Jude Cole's "I Don't Know Why I Act This Way." Definitely all desert island albums.

Their entire "Together Alone" album is perfection - check out "Distant Sun" - or frankly any track - all worth a listen.
This was one of the two main songs featured on the original version of Steven King's "The Stand". Definitely a fitting song for a movie about the eternal battle between good and evil.

Personally I think this is the most beautiful song recorded in the 1980s. Quite often, and spontaneously, I catch myself humming the refrain " Hey now, hey now- don't dream it's over. " for no reason whatever. Such is the impact Neil Finn's best has had. Anyone else do that?
The ambient guitar stabs in this song were performed by Tim Pierce, session guitarist who has an excellent YT channel, and he talks about working on this song.
As much as I love this song, I am reminded how depression takes the brightest stars. On 26 March 2005, Paul Hester (drummer) was found dead. He had committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in a park near his home in Melbourne. He was 46 years old. His obituary in The Sydney Morning Herald stated that he had fought "a long battle with depression.
Yes, the farewell concert they did at Sydney Opera House is particularly sad to watch when they play this, with Paul there on drums.

The 1996 Live from Sydney Opera House performance of this song just rips my heart out ~ it was the last performance with the band for the drummer, who later committed suicide. RIP
The huge audience was singing along... not quite a Freddie Mercury LiveAid moment (nothing will ever top that), but beautiful nonetheless.
There´s a shot in that performance, just as the song hits its last note, that breaks my heart, when the camera settles on a couple sitting on the grass holding each other, in tears, and then pans up to the night sky. Yes, it was the last performance with Paul, but, for many years, we all thought it was their last ever performance. It was really classy to offer their "farewell to the world" free on the steps on Sydney Opera House, and just as classy to give their comeback concert free in the same place. Just tragic that it took Paul´s passing to bring them back together.
I was at the first gig back after that happened it was so emotional.

Crowded House is one of my all time favorites! I’ve seen Neil Finn twice in concert and he is an incredible songwriter and lead singer. Along with the Crowded House songs others have mentioned (Something So Strong, Locked Out) he also sang in the group Split Enz and you would love I Got You and Message to My Girl.
When you grow up or come of age under the influence of great music, certain themes have certain memories attached to them and take on special meanings.
I'm not here to bare my soul on YT, but I will say this song brings me to the edge every time. So hauntingly beautiful and serene. I weep for my lost youth.

This song has a whole different meaning to me. Back in the 80's, my then boyfriend; had to go to prison. He wrote me a letter about this song. "They come to build a wall between us. Don't let them win!" Even though he and I didn't make it together in this world, this song makes me think about his message, every single time I hear it!! You have to remember, there was a different type of war going on back in those days. One of my favorite songs to this day. I do hope he made it out alive! Thank you for reacting to it!

I think that’s over for now, crowded house have reformed and released a new album recently and are touring again. I’m not saying it’s permanent but he has reformed crowded house 😊

Neil is from NZ, Paul & Nick are from Victoria, Australia. Sorry, just wanted to make it clear-people always say that they are from NZ but 2/3 aren’t! 😂

Co-founders Neil Finn and Paul Hester they both formed the band and Seymour asked to join. And it was formed in Melbourne so sorry. It's where the band orginates. Plus NZ didn't even pay attention to them until they became popular overseas.
Yes Neil Finn is a very proud New Zealander and so he should be. But it's and Aussie band.
I don't think you can describe him as under appreciated when his songwriting talent had been noted by Paul McCartney and he was recently performing with Fleetwood Mac.
@@MM-tp9ck Neil & Paul co founded Crowded House. Paul even did a little drumming for Split Enz. Paul was one of my best friend from schools brother in law. I only met him a few times but he did make me (& my bff of course) dinner once! 😂
It took me a while to realize the true meaning of this song. I originally thought it was about the downfall of a relationship, but I was dead wrong. The lyrics actually depict a couple weathering the storm, not letting the obstacles get in the way of their love. Neil Finn is a brilliant vocalist and lyricist. This song was covered by many, including a notable one by the band Sixpence None the Richer, but nothing tops the original.
Memories abound! I was 13 when I first heard this, and it was the late 80's. At this point, the generation coming up was going sour on the artificial and overdone product that dominated much of pop culture. We wanted something that was real and to the point. There were many voices that echoed this sentiment, and Crowded House nailed it by saying: "We won't let them win."
I say, looking back, we did just that. Our need to be heard was received, and the world got to listen to our side of the story.
This is one of my all time favorite bands! The lead singer Neil Finn also writes all the songs and is easily one of the best contemporary songwriters as well as having an incredible voice and playing guitar. So glad you all reacted to them and I highly recommend you go deeper into their catalog. As others have mentioned Something So Strong was also a hit for them but even their lesser known songs are often fabulous. No surprise that Fleetwood Mac asked Neil to tour with them. since he's such an amazingly talented guy. He was singing this song at the Fleetwood Mac shows and the crowd would go crazy! A classic song!

Hearing this here brought me to tears remembering how much we wanted the world and for it to be better. We really did 🥲. I was a young adult and this one hit me hard when I first heard it. Been a lifelong fan ever since. Please listen to so much more Crowded House.

As other have said, you should Check out "Split Enz", which was the forerunner of Crowded House. Good tunes to listen to would be "I Hope I Never", "Ghost Girl", "One Step Ahead", and "History Never Repeats".
