Knew you'd fall into this rabbit hole eventually. They were one of the best groups of the 80s, and Bruce himself is one of the best pianist's you'll find (right up there with Billy Joel, Elton John, and Tori Amos). "The Way It Is" was his breakout single, hitting #1 in 1986. He followed this up with "Mandolin Rain", "Every Little Kiss" and "The Valley Road" (I hope you do that one next, it has one of the best piano tracks I've EVER heard). I hope you'll be diving into Bruce's discography for months to come! Fun fact - Bruce was a member of The Grateful Dead for two years in the early 70s! He also was briefly part of the band Ambrosia, and was a touring musician for 80s diva Sheena Easton (someone you HAVE TO DO ON FEMALE FRIDAY!) (I recommend you start with "Morning Train".)
On the Elton John/Bernie Taupin tribute album, Two Rooms, Bruce does a cover of Madman Across The Water that's better than Elton's original! It's EPIC!

Oh....I haven't heard this song in ages....such a great tune!!!!! I used to work at a family diner when I was in my late teens. The owners had no kids and I was the youngest waitress...so they kind of "adopted me". They worried over me and made sure I stayed in line as I was kind of a "wild child"....LOL!! The dish washer was a special needs older black man....he had the mentality of a child at times and we all loved him. The owners kind of "adopted" him too...helped keep him off the streets and out of trouble. He used to kill me....he would be in the back at the dish washer with his headphones on singing his heart out....about every other verse to some songs...then mumbling the rest....it was so cute and funny. This song brings back those memories of him because when this song came on the radio....he mumbled most of it....but the part "Get a job" he sang it loud and clear...and when I walked into the room he would run up to me, laughing, and say..."Yeah...people need to GET A JOB!!!".....He was a TRIP!!!! RIP Buddy Roe!! I will never forget all those long weekends working double shifts and having a blast with you!! You were a one of a kind human being...a big heart...who loved to sing.

Bruce is a killer player. He’s always had a great band. They famously would often do ‘requests’ sections of their live shows, where the audience could send up requests, and the band would jam out whatever the requests were. Extraordinary musicians.
A beautiful bitter sweet song that defined the time (1986-1987) and is still relevant. With this, the original version comes that distinctive feeling of melancholy with wisdom in Bruce's voice.

Mandolim Rain
This whole album was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! Every song is just unbelievable!!
Bought the song on release and love every bit!👍🏻❤️✌🏻🎹
Oct. 15 1986, our son was born. One of my fav things to do with him was cuddle him to my chest and dance around the living room to this tune (on vinyl, of course!). He went on to learn piano through lessons, and when he was a teenager and Tupac's Changes was out, he would play it on his high school's piano (very, very well) with everyone swarmed around him! He's 37 now, and he can still play this flawlessly ❤
you just cannot beat the sound of a piano when its played like this.........simply great
Anything by Bruce Hornsby is amazing. Old Valley Road, Mandolin Rain are musts.
Yes!
The Road Not Taken is my absolute favorite on this album
"The Way It Is" truly is one of the great MESSAGE songs in pop music history. Bruce Hornsby poignantly wrote about welfare, economic disparity, racism, plus the Civil Rights Act and the Economic Opportunity Act---both in 1964. And you're right, Amber: Hornsby is a brilliant pianist! Please react to BH&TR's "The Valley Road" and "Mandolin Rain".
Valley road has always been my absolute favorite.
Makes me wonder why anybody would ever vote Republican. We are still living like this after how many years? Make America Great Again really means take America back 100 years.
@@carlgibbons5777 I believe helping the less fortunate and disenfranchised is not aligned with one political party. I have some relatives who are staunch conservatives and some who are fierce progressives, and all of them give of their time and treasure to worthy causes and people who are in need. It's the call of Hebrews 16:13 > "And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased."
@@carlgibbons5777 Why do people vote Republican??
Well let's see...
Under Trump:
Economic Impact Zones for low income neighborhoods
Largest funding of Historically Black Universities EVER
Hispanic Prosperity Initiative
Lowest unemployment rate for Blacks and minorities in 50 years
First Step Act to aid in rehabilitating felons
And what has Biden done???
Not a damn thing other than to cause more young Black men to go to prison, and to have a long history of racist statements. Look it up yourself.
@@carlgibbons5777 Can't you hear the message in Bruce's song, he said " but don't you believe it". He is talking about their beliefs and the things they say. Things are changing, maybe not as fast as we want but they are.
When this song hit and got nominated for a Grammy, he got a call from Elton John. EJ wanted to congratulate him on his unique piano style. He said that it was incredibly unique. They were blown away. The social commentary behind this song is great.
I was also wondering what they made of the lyrics, and compared to the words Tupac put to the tune in his rapping. The Way It Is became a hit in the UK in late summer 1986. Tupac's take on it Changes was big here at the start of 1999.
Mandolin Rain is another excellent one by Bruce Hornsby & The Range. The whole album is really good, to be honest.
💯
Absolutely 😊
Bruce Hornsby absolutely amazing
Bruce was in the Grateful Dead in the 90s. Looking forward to Sheena Easton too!
If they get to the Sheena Easton/Kenny Rogers duet We’ve Got Tonight, that will blow their socks off.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee Cool. I didn't know their history together went that far back.
On the Elton John/Bernie Taupin tribute album, Two Rooms, Bruce does a cover of Madman Across The Water that's better than Elton's original! It's EPIC!
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee I was lucky, I got to see both Brent, Bruce and Vince back in the day. Never got to see them play Dark Star though.
This song brought thought to social injustice. The words actually made you consider what he was saying. He is a great pianist, but the words were thought provoking. Great song and artist.
Just like Marvin Gaye did with What's Going On?
This comment! Music is great but I felt y'all really missed the message of the song - most likely also a big factor in why Tupac sampled it
I still remember the very first time I heard this song on the radio -- it was very unusual at the time to have a piano-driven pop song, so this didn't sound like anything else that was being given airplay at the time.
So many people miss the line “but don’t you believe them” because he is hopeful. People say “that’s just the way it is“, and he says “but don’t you believe them“ because you can make change.
Bruce truely tickles them ivories...One of a kind!
His piano skills are why I wanted you two to react to this. TBH, I didn't know Tupac sampled it. Learn something new every day!😊
Tupac's song changes was a massive hit In the 90s.
Bruce Hornsby played piano on Don Henley's "The End of the Innocence". check it out. (Although Henley stuff ends up getting blocked).
Great song. Great artist. hate he gets blocked 👍😃❣️
If I remember correctly, he also co-wrote that song.
It's a real shame that Henley/Eagles get blocked, because that is an entire music world unto itself, with a huge load of great songs!
@@teresajarrell452 Eagles and management are notorious for cease and desist copyright infringement ultimatums. Henley even got pissed off fans were recording Eagles' concerts on their phones.
@@ceebee9711 that's a shame, ❤️ EAGLES. THE BEST concert I have ever been to. I think they make plenty of money, considering 3 tickets was over $500. About 20 years ago. Great seats, though. I know artists have to protect their work, but some of them are a little too strict. IMHO 😊
Brings me back to the 80's. Good song. Thanks for the reaction.
GUYS...Bruce was from the early 80s and well before Tupac. Bruce is a Musical genius and a phenomenal pianist. WORD!! Thank you for the amazing reaction to Bruce's talent
They know that. They were just surprised that it was sampled by Tupac.
This is a wonderful track and the piano playing is excellent.
Don Henley “End of the Innocence”
Bruce co-wrote that and played piano on it if you didn't already know that.
Somethings will never change? Love y'all listening to this in front of a picture of the Rat Pack and Hendrix and The Bee Gees. And you got this old lady about to check out some Tupac.
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤
I love the way he plays piano. It’s so bright and punctual. His voice is so clear too. Couple that with his storytelling lyrics and it’s clear why other artists sampled his work.
The way Bruce plays piano, creating a rythm inside the rythm is stunning ! It makes me think about the way Phil Collins plays drums. Love it ! ❤️❤️❤️
Me as a alltime thrash metal fan think this song is one of the most briljant songs ever written! ❤
As a Piano player myself. Bruce Hornsby is an excellent player
When playing piano or any instrument coming from the heart, it is amazing and awesome.
Rob by how much you love piano I've advocating for this for a while
Interesting fact Bruce is Huey Lewis's cousin and helped on many of their songs He wrote the song Jacob's Ladder for the News
Saw him in concert he played Jacob's ladder told the audience he could play it because he wrote it so he wasn't stealing it
One of the most beautiful piano performances in pop music ever.
Hornsby is playing a Baldwin concert grand. Magnificent instrument in its day.
One of my all-time favorite songs, from the best pianist in music.
Did you listen to the lyrics? I think the fact that Tupac sampled it, people listen for the differences instead of hearing the incredible, moving lyrics.
I agree. I think they missed the point on this one.
@@tonyfontinel272 Exactly!!!
I think they were busy hearing the rap lyrics in their heads.
Bruce once said he took a lot of criticism because for some reason people completely miss that he says “don’t you believe them” lol.
On a side note this was the first Hornsby song I learned to play on the piano. I was disheartened when Bruce told another fan - that’s the easiest one! lol
It was a huge song for Bruce. It hit number 1 on billboard, he won best new artist Grammy that year as well
This whole album was fantastic. I saw him in concert, he can rock out on an accordion. 😂
He does a pretty fair hammered dulcimer too, a sound I've always loved. He plays it in the song The Red Plains.
The more you listen to the music of the older generations, the more you are going to find the artists from your generation sample or cover songs from the previous generations. Can't tell you how many time my girls came home excited about this new song some artist put out in the 90s and early 2000s and I'd pull out my CD of the original artist and play it for them.
as long as they love it
Or in this year, outright cover. Much as I like songs like this one, we have GOT to get more original music.
The piano arragament in the song is hypnotic
Love Bruce Hornsby! My brother went to Wm & Mary with his wife. And my daughter was at UNC Asheville with his son. Got to meet him and he was the nicest guy ever. A great Virginia boy through and through. And my goodness that piano…
My brother started at William & Mary the year this song came out, so it always reminds me of him. I think the video of another Bruce Hornsby song was filmed on the W&M campus around that time as well.
Valley Road
@@neatdesign He did! The name Hornsby is quite plentiful around Williamsburg so he must have lots of family there as well.
The bass man did an extraordinary job right there as well.
This is one of his BIG TWO for me. The other one is "Mandolin Rain," which is a bit sad. 😥
Bruce piano on this is legendary. The piano near the end is amazing 👏
NOBODY thought they were gonna, "sneak it by you". Like you said...we just wanted you to learn something today.
And just imagine, this was Bruce's first hit back in the day. His piano style blew everyone's minds back then. He spent some time playing keys on tour for the Grateful Dead after Brent Mydland's death. You should also check out his duet with Stevie Nicks, "Two Kinds Of Love".
And on Bonnie Raitt's "I can't make you love me"! His piano style is so distinctive, you can pick it out anywhere! #robsquad
Pretty sure he's on keyboards in the Sheena Easton "Sugar Walls" video too.
Yes, I love that song "Two kinds of love' with Bruce singing the ballad with her. It is one of my fav songs from Stevie. It is on her album> "The other side of the mirror". I don't think many are familiar with that song, I hope they check it out because it is a beautiful song.
@@stevemcneill4177 He was? Now I have to go check. I know Prince wrote Sugar Walls.
I thought the same thing when I first heard the song, since I'd heard "Changes" first.
Bruce Hornsby also did the iconic piano work on Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me".
Love that song and when I found out my Bruce Hornsby played the piano just added to it with my Bonnie rsit
Rappers sample music from all genres lol. Lot of them listened to and were exposed to multiple kinds of music growing up. 🎶
I love both of the songs. Bruce Hornsby and Tupac.
Also hear Bruce "Mandolin Rain", too with the video.
This song was written in 1985. Hornsby wrote it late one night in his garage, and then later added the sound track. Timeless and beautiful 👏
The opening bass line is straight up FUNK!
Yess! I always play air guitar
As much as I love this song, I have to recommend Mandolin Rain as my favorite by Bruce Hornsby.
Hundreds of years of piano music but rare to have music that stands out from the rest. This is one of those. Monumental.
It just shows how beautiful and seamless a gorgeous lyric and composition can transcend from 80s pop to Tupac. I'm so glad 😊
Transcend to Tupac????
I could literally listen to Bruce Hornsby play piano 24/7. Glorious!
I thought that am the only one who gets this " over the moon feeling " when I hear and see this man bruce hornsby , playing his piano. Whenever I hear piano music, classical beethoven , debussy, strauss and others; concert or otherwise, i come alive. However bruce hornsby's style of playing, the dexterity of his fingers , his piano-tuned tone, altogether give me this "over the moon " high. Just love it. Thanks bruce .
The look on Jays face when he starts to realize is priceless
One of the finest artists of all time! He is unsurpassed in piano artistry, but also in his poetry / social commentary.... Don't miss it in the distraction of Tupac... Listen to the lyrics someday and really see the song and the people behind it and the times. Don't miss out. It's special.
Agreed! It needs to be a movement!!!
Before he sang a single note the piano playing had me smiling. I’d forgotten how effortlessly Bruce Hornsby plays and ad libs riffs by ear.
On top of the beautiful music in this song, is the important lyrics!❤
I LOVE the lyrics in this song that Bruce wrote as mcuh as I LOVE his beautiful, clear and intricate piano playing. He addressed racism with powerful words wrapped in God-like music. Just phenomenal. Thank you both for showing this!
Hornsby was a studio musician before he struck out on his own. He knows his way around the keyboard, that’s for sure.
Hornsby is a virtuoso pianist. I believe he is a musical director for a philharmonic orchestra now. No one is better. He plays every instrument. This song is a touchstone. So much more important than just pop music. It is a poem.
Gods miss those times!! I was a lead guitar player and 20 years old in 1980. It probably was the most beautiful time in America for music. Music drove that whole decade and businesses were pouring millions of dollars for the homeless here in the USA!! Harry Bellefante even said…. I’ve seen many changes and things in my life! Civil rights movement, Viet Nam, Watergate, but one thing that happened in the 80s that will never happen again! America took care of itself for once and that time came so close to uniting people for great causes!
“They passed a law in ‘64 to give those who ain’t got a little more” is the civil rights law. Great tune.
It's welfare...
@@seeclearlynow2123 the fist verse is about a welfare line, the second is the whites that agreed with segregation. They mention the civil rights act and the need to do more.
Yes, the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 (Welfare Act), part of Johnson's War on Poverty.

"The Way It Is" peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. "Changes" peaked at #32 in 1999.
This song for me is the best song of the 80's! Gives me goosebumps every

Yes! Bruce was huge back in the day! The entire album was big! “Mandolin Rain” and “On the Western Skyline”, and “What I wouldn’t give”….the whole album is 5 stars!

Also "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt. Bruce plays piano on that, hauntingly beautiful.
Nothing beats real instruments!! With all of the technical crap put into music today and artificial synth and digital music, it is never the quality of real instruments!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Not only is Bruce Hornsby such a fantastic, passionate piano player and singer, but he is also a great songwriter as well; he wrote "The Way It Is" and he always has a meaning to his songs. There is a distinct message Bruce is conveying in this song & that shows why it went to #1. He wrote "The End of the Innocence" with Eagles Don Henley, who had a hit with it (with Bruce playing piano). "Mandolin Rain" & "Every Little Kiss" are awesome Bruce Hornsby & the Range songs. I've seen them in concert and they are even better Live. Bruce is the reason I learned to play piano and now a keyboard; he inspired me so much. What a talent he is.
His cover of The Grateful Dead's "Jack Straw" contains one of the greatest piano solos of all time!! I'm a piano player, so of course he's an all time favorite of mine. Fun fact: Bruce Hornsby played for The Grateful Dead for a few years.
