In Boy Scouts as a kid one year we made a wooden plaque with that quote on it for Fathers Day. It hung on our wall in the den for the entirety of my youth until I had my 1st born. At that time my father gave it to me to hang in my den.
I used to tell my students they would come back to me with this quote one day after being flustered with me regarding rules enforced on the college campus. (I mentored, but did not formally teach.)
Some did, laughing. "You tried to tell us there were reasons and that you cared. Thank you for caring. I never forgot."
I very much appreciate hearing that quote. What's remarkable is that I've never heard it before and I've been a big reader all of my 76 years. Well, 72 of them!
The modern version goes something like this - "When I was in high school, I couldn't believe what idiots my parents were. By the time I graduated college, I was impressed with how much they learned while I was away."
Same with my old man.
I used to work for Graham Nash at his Hollywood recording studio a long time ago. One day they were testing transferring the analog master tape mix of this album to a digital machine. Graham stood there and goes "It still sounds great", meaning the music. So I asked him why, in his opinion, their first two albums were still so great and he told me "Because they were made with a lot of love, man, a LOT of love". And that about summed up his attitude about his work, that it was important to convey a universal love, a love for all life kind of love, into everything. It's a great value to live by, even though we're human and we'll repeatedly fall short and sometimes fail, but keep striving for that anyway. Graham was a cool guy.

Graham Nash wrote this one, and Jerry Garcia from The Grateful Dead sat in on steel guitar. They all brought in their best songs for this album (Deja Vu). You would want to do a reaction to the whole album because it's a whole journey from start to finish, and a musical artifact from the Woodstock era.

Little known fact: .......When CSNY were recording this song, the Grateful Dead were recording next door and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young felt there was something missing from their recording of this song so they asked lead guitarist of the Dead Jerry Garcia to sit in with them. So, the wonderful pedal steel guitar work you hear on the song is Jerry Garcia himself!
jerry also plays pedal steel on Change Partners as well :)
This was one of Jerry's pedal steel excursions during the early 70s, which included every song on The New Riders of the Purple Sage first album, David Crosby's first solo album and as mentioned by the replier above Stills second solo album. He totally dirties up the pedal on The NRPS song Dirty Business. You will not be disappointed if you review that one too

We didn’t call it country back then; it was known as folk. I loved when Neil Young was with them, but he went on and had his own successful career. Great song,great group.

Labels were usually put on a group, not a song. This supergroup was folk rock. Songs might have different flavors and CSNY had country influences but they were mainly folk rock.

@@randy8297 It's Jerry Garcia on the pedal steel. That was the first take and as perfect as it was, Jerry wanted to do another take and got mad at Crosby when they said no.

I was a 16 year old in high school when this was released in 1969. I loved it then, as an anthem of what those of us in "the movement" were all about. I'm now a 70 year old father of five grown children. I'm with Amber -- it brings tears of joy and even wistfulness. I'm thankful that I'm close to all of my children, and they seem to genuinely love me more than I ever thought possible. The anthem of my youth has become an ode to joy.
An aspect of this that I learned my father-in-law who had his children at a very young age is that, with luck, most of the relationship between you and your children will be as grown-ups. Childhood is fleeting. Twenty five years is a lifetime when you're 25 -- it doesn't seem that long ago by 70. The turn of the 21st century doesn't seem like so long ago to me. My youngest daughter turns 27 next year, and my oldest turns 40 next year.
One of the miracles of my life is how I, as an only child in a dysfunctional family of origin, somehow ended up with five children and a happy marriage.
I love that the two of you clearly feel as well as listen to this ode to genuine love.
I too am the only child of a dysfunctional family and you give me hope.
I graduated in '69, and I still love this music today at 72.
The wisest of us realize that you never stop learning, I’ve seen my children and now my grandchildren, and I learned from them every time I see them and I tried to teach them as well. Everybody and I mean everyone continues to learn from each other and grow.

i always think this song is about protecting your kids from your mistakes, your hangups, and teach them to be better than you are.
and kids love your parents because they love you and they are doing their best.
I think that Graham Nash wrote it with his relationship with his dad in mind. His father was a WWII vet and, although he was British, he may have struggled as fathers in the US did with the idea that his son opposed the Vietnam war and questioned the government's motives. But it did echo with me recently as my relationship with my mother can be conflictual, and it took us having big fallings out and not talking to each other for months for some things to get better.
The beautiful performance in this song featured on the pedal steel guitar is by Grateful Dead founder Jerry Garcia. Though he rarely played it in Dead performances, he was a master of that instrument.
"Southern Cross" is also a great song by CSN. One of my favorites.

Always loved the reversal in this song. Teach, your children well ---------------------------> Teach, your parents well. I cared for my dad as his life ended. Physically, he became like a child again, just unable to manage the physical world. So I did it for him. By most accounts, the natural course of life. Lovely song.

This song was so meaningful in the context of when it was originally done. The rifts between generations and parents and children in the 60s.
I have 2 grown sons in their 40s now. So proud of them but often reflect on how we raised them.
I know we were very very young parents and did not always do and say the right things but it all worked out perfectly.
I love you guys . You guys GET IT .. I was a teenager in the 70s and got to live with the greatest era of music. The music really did shape people lives in many ways , and I’m so happy that you are experiencing that now .
My oldest is almost 30 and has given us two beautiful Grandkids. Our youngest is now 24. I loved this song and CSN as a kid. Understood it as a parent and now a Grandpaw appreciate it's message completely.

"Teach Your Children " is one of the songs in the movie "Melody Fair" in the 70th .This movie was about 2 very young kids who fell in love with each other. "First of May", "Melody Fair" and "To Love Somebody" by BEE GEE were the other 3 songs in this movie. If you see this movie, I think you will love these songs more.

A huge part of teaching your children well is to teach them that Sunday morning is about more than food and donuts (or football even). Get your children and yourselves to church on Sunday morning and you will go a long way toward being taught well as opposed to turning out as an atheist.

Got to see CSN&Y early 70s and just CSN years later. The best harmonies ever. As a music lover I try to keep current but these nostalgic tours are wonderful. Still love so much if the music from late 60s and 70s.
This song is from the 60's. Stephen Stills (phenomenal guitarist who wrote "For What It's Worth" and performed it with Buffalo Springfield), Graham Nash (sang with The Hollies and has a beautiful song "Our House") David Crosby (wonderful tenor who performed with The Byrds "Mr. Tambourine Man" is very quirky and controversial) and Neil Young (personally not a favorite of mine but also sang with Buffalo Springfield). Check out CSNY "Marrakesh Express" and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes"

I came home from school one day when this album came out and caught my very straight rock music and hippie-hating parents sitting in my room listening to this song on my stereo. Blew my mind. Then they asked me about another song they had heard playing through the walls that I knew to be a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young song called "Right Between The Eyes" which I played for them. That was the only time I ever remember them listening to my favorite music by choice and enjoying the message they heard.
I used to sing this to my older children. Of course, I remember seeing CSNY at Woodstock when I was a student, so this song was amongst the first which came to mind when our first children were born, almost a decade later, and on the opposite side of the Globe. My daughter sings it to her kids today, and one of my older grandsons, who is 12, sang it at his school assembly in Victoria a couple of weeks ago. So, that's three generations so far singing this Brit, Graham Nash's song.
Amber, watching you actually made me tear up. I was around 18 when this album came out. The message of this tune is to learn from and help bridge the "generation" gap. I had my children at a very young age and yes they have taught me many things good and bad over the years. I now have a grandchild in San Diego and I live in New York, it goes fast and furious at times so remember to breathe and take as much of it in as you can. 3 generations later and this songs message still resonates.
Every time I hear this, I think if my children (all adults now with kids of their own). It never fails to make me tear up even though I've listened to it for decades. It's perfect.
I love y’all’s comments so much. You guys are on the right track. My son is now 34 and my daughter is 30. Yesterday, they were babies. Throughout their upbringing, most of the time, things were good. But we then went through a financial downturn. Yet even then, we did our best to keep the equilibrium. We are proud of them both. You know, in the blink of an eye, you’re kids will be adults. And most of your life with them will be when they’re adults. It’s so strange when you realize that!

This is such a beautiful song and I've been fortunate to be listening to it for many many years. The harmonies, the melodies, the lyrics and and the song as a whole, is a wonderful experience. Can't ever go wrong with CSNY. Another one you may want to try is "Carry On" off of the same album. Just too many great songs on that one. Happy Birthday to your oldest one.

I don't have children but I have a godson and when you say that having kids changes you...that little boy unlocked a part of my heart I never knew existed. I feel you 100% here and Amber, I WAS bawling by the first "and know they love you". I always do now, LOL!❤

Some additional context for this song. It was being written at a time when political, social, and values opinions differed so starkly between age cohorts that the term "Generation Gap" was coined to denote it. To get a feel for how fraught relations between the older and younger generations could be at the time, just watch one of the earlier episodes of "All in the Family", both because one of those episodes would be closer to contemporary with this song and because the show "jumped the shark" in later seasons. So this was a plea for inter-generational peace and tolerance at a time when this was in short supply.
A bit of trivia, that's Jerry Gracia of the Grateful Dead playing the steel guitar.
He did it in exchange for help improving his group's vocal harmonies.

CSNY are so good! Deja Vu is such a good album! My favorite song is “Carry On/Questions”. “Woodstock” is another good one! A sad song they wrote is called “Ohio” it talks about the national guard coming onto the Kent State University in 1970 to break up a protest and they left 4 students dead.
When I first heard this song I did not have children. Then I had three children and now I have 11 grandchildren and the song still makes me cry with happiness. You guys are awesome parents.
When I held my son in my arms for the first time I said to him that I wanted him to become a good man when he grows up. He is 18 now and he has become a very good boy and I hope It continues once I’m gone. This song is one of my favorites of all times, the lyrics, the harmonies and the singing technique used in it are amazing.

This beautiful song hits all stages. As a mom of 2 young adults, they don’t always follow the path you envision, but it’s precious to see them find their place in the world. My grown kids have taught me so much about compassion and acceptance of others, and they are great people with kind, loving hearts.

Yes! I swear I learned more from my daughters than I ever taught them. We were also very young...18.5 when I had our first daughter! Our first daughter was our "thinker" (she'll soon be 42), our second daughter was the "do-er" (she turns 40 on 12-24). To this day? They're still that way! Now, I'm learning from my grandson (20 yrs old) & my granddaughters (14 & 6 yrs old). I treasure being a younger Mimi and love all that each one teaches me!!! I'm so blessed and y'all will continue to be very blessed. Love you both and those beautiful kiddos of yours, too! 🧡
