Just wanted to say that following your video I managed to diagnose the exact same issue on my 2002 Montana. It looks to have pretty much the same or similar engine. P0401 error and gunked up gas port, exactly the same in in your video. Cleaned it out, code gone! Thank you so much for this video!
Did yours have the exhaust hose bolted to the back like my 2000 Montana? All the Venture/Silhouette/Montana EGR videos skip over that because they have a different EGR valve (49-state?) and it has turned this job into a nightmare!
how did u know it was the egr valve i have a 1999 chevy venture 3.4 and i got the same code po0401 and i replaced the egr valve and the code came back so what am i misssing thanks alot
Awesome video, I've got a 93 F150 and have been watching video after video on how to go about fixing the main problem and not just a bandaid with a new egr valve, and I'll be driving into mine tomorrow like u did, thanks for all the insight and time, definitely got a new fan.
I got this code on my 98 Accord.. From prior experience I figured that the EGR valve was not bad. I just cleaned it with carb cleaner spray and also bought a variety pack of bottle brushes at Harbor Freight.. also large pipe cleaners usually found at hobby stores or maybe Walmart are helpful cleaning out those passages (I don't have an air copressor). Took about and hour. Code hasn't come back. : )
Great video I'm having the same issues with my 98 Pontiac transport as we speak I'm bout to try what you show me and hopefully it works okay great job on the demonstration.
Need video for Toyota Prius 3rd gen. Anyway, from much research.....to remove the EGR cooler/assemble...... use an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three Nuts in the back. I had a hard time reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler. Then, used a Torx E8 socket for the two Bolts ( in the back of EGR cooler) and I finally freed the EGR assembly. It's literally impossible to remove EGR valve only for DYI non professional therefore remove the whole EGR assembly. Good Video mec a !!!
I have a 04 impala with the same 3.4, replaced the egr valve then just cleaned it yesterday when I replaced the egr valve it ran good for the night then the next day it was acting funny again, I cleaned everything out the other day how you did in the video n the code came back n it sounds clogged again what should my next step be?
So, I did all this,my passage after the throttle body was not clogged.Any suggestions? My EGR was fine also, spring on it worked and was not very dirty.I did notice the last time I cleaned the throttle body, that when I took it off when checking the EGR that the throttle body gasket was a little smashed in one side, whereas it is a rounded gasket
My Ford Taurus 2006 had this issue had a diagnostics check in this is what popped up with this code that I needed something my check my check engine light came on and also low oil pressure
Getting this code too, seems my egr was unplugged? Just got it back from a garage who have done extensive work on my vehicle and when they put it all back I'm now getting eml . Fortunately I have my own scanner so decided to investigate and I'm getting the same code as in the title. Egr valve on my vehicle extremely difficult to get to, did manage to see that it was unplugged managed to get my hand in there just about. Cleared code nothing for few hours and on again. Cleared code again and nothing again so far after a few hours. Hopefully this will be enough or its engine out again as no other way to get to it
My 1997 Rodeo 4 cyl infrequently has PO401 code - insufficient flow - have cleaned EGR passageway and replaced EGR valve. There is no blockage/restriction - this vehicle doesn't have flow monitoring sensors (like Fords do) - how does computer monitor EGR flow?
Hi mate please I've got in my car mk5 golf gti dsg diesel 2.0 Emissions workshop And i put the car through code reader And the code is Egr system insufficient flow p0401 Do you think should i change the EGR valve?
I replaced the EGR Valve (and gasket of course), but didn't know that the EGR Valve ports (passages) should be cleaned, so I need to do it now. Throttle Body I removed and cleaned before. The car idles high on start and gave code P0401. I want to use large brushes for ports and carb Cleaner to spray inside of the ports, but can it be any Carb Cleaner? I have CRC Throttle Body & Air-Intake Cleaner, WD-40 Carb/Throttle Body & parts Cleaner, and and Gumout Carb/Choke & parts Cleaner (on Gumout is says: "not recommended for fuel injected vehicles"). Not sure which one to use. The car is 2001 Saturn SL2, it has fuel injectors of course. But if you have Carburator it is not fuel injected vehicle (I believe those mostly motorcycles, aircrafts, and some diesel cars). Did you disconnect the battery to do this work? Is it recommended? I think it takes longer if you disconnect the battery than you erase the codes to reset the tests, right? Thank you for the very informative film, as always.
The valve(and flow sensor) were probably fine, save for cleaning. On these engines, it’s the passage on the manifold that clogs up mostly, and it’s a good idea to try to soften up the gunk in it with a penetrant lube (I like seafoam’s deep creep) before resorting to carb cleaner, a brush and air to blow things out. (The ones they make for steel straws work well on the manifold passage, and just about any bottle brush for the line off the exhaust manifold is good too. A healthy spray of carb cleaner for the latter is fine) The penetrant is key, to lube up the pintle of the valve itself - let it soak in, soften things up and displace whatever might be preventing the valve to open fully or close properly or move at all before carb cleaning it.
@@olenaerhardt7725 intake manifold particularly. The engine doesn’t run correctly without EGR, usually leading to over fuelling, causing carboning of the exhaust. A vicious little cycle.
@@paulkazjack yes I believe the computer is looking for a change from the oxygen sensor once the egr is opened. Much how some cars look for a change from the fuel tank pressure sensor once a purge valve opens to determine if there's a problem.
It can tell if gas is flowing or not using one of several different methods: 1) Temperature sensor after the EGR valve plunger used by the ECU to measure a rise in temperature when exhaust flows through it 2) Differential pressure sensor measures the difference in pressure before and after the EGR valve so the ECU knows whether gas is flowing 3) MAP sensor measures rise in pressure from the flow of exhaust gas and informs the ECU.
Is this gonna cause a lose oh HP or anything? Or is this something that you shouldn't worry too much about? I haven't been able to clear my code. Idk if I can do all this. Scared to break or screw up my car.
I dont think itll cause loss of hp, if the egr system is clogged or not working and imagine it'll just cause a check engine light. Unless the egr is stuck open, then it can cause long cranks or crank and stall situation. Also lean codes and driveability issues
I got are 1hz 79series engine lights on guess it's the egr, use to much fuel lost power & bad idle, any idea on what I should do without taking it to workshop?
My EGR valve came w/ a metal gasket, it has holes in it and those holes are surrounded by circles. Does someone know if that gasket goes w/circles curved up or down? Does it matter at all? I would appreciate any opinion on this.
@@themechanic6117 Thank you. On the picture Amazon it shows curve down, but the gasket is shown separately. When I opened a new valve I thought I'll remember how it was (I installed it like 5-6 months ago). I'm still looking for a solution to remove P0446, so decided to clean passages for that new EGR, here this question came, if it is the right position for the gasket (it was curves down). Now I installed it curves up, since the base on which that EGR is sitting is smooth, so it looked more logical for me. That is not big deal, I'll reinstall (I think it was initially installed better). I believe the original part had a paper gasket. In general probably that car has more fundamental problem, like I need to remove and clean Intake and Exhaust Manifolds. I can imagine somehow Exhaust, but the Intake a complete nightmare for me, though on that mileage (~130K) it should be done anyway. Need to read more how to do it. Thank you again for the great films you make.
P0446 has to do with the vent valve in the evap system.... that has nothing to do with the EGR system. If you look up the two parts you'll see the vent valve is completely different from the egr. You may have a bad vent valve causing your code
@@themechanic6117 That Vent Valve (Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid) I replaced also like 4 month ago, I hoped it will help. It is close to the fill cup, above the rear wheel on passenger side, I found it and replaced it. Nothing. It could be also Charcoal Canister, which is sitting atop of Fuel Tank and you need to drop the tank in Saturns. I've heard it is not so bad, but I don't know many things about it. There also is a Fuel Pump sensor in that area as well. Anyway I know those 3 projects should be done anyway on 130K (2 manifolds and the Canister), Saturn is very good car, if to do all those projects, it would run like new. How does the ECU know there's a fault with the Egr ? In other words how does it know there's a blockage?
It can use the oxygen sensors to detect if theres egr flow
