From Wikki: *In internal combustion engines, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions reduction technique used in petrol/gasoline and diesel engines. EGR works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. This dilutes the O2 in the incoming air stream and provides gases inert to combustion to act as absorbents of combustion heat to reduce peak in-cylinder temperatures. NOx is produced in a narrow band of high cylinder temperatures and pressures. In a gasoline engine, this inert exhaust displaces the amount of combustible matter in the cylinder. In a diesel engine, the exhaust gas replaces some of the excess oxygen in the pre-combustion mixture.[1] Because NOx forms primarily when a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen is subjected to high temperature, the lower combustion chamber temperatures caused by EGR reduces the amount of NOx the combustion generates (though at some loss of engine efficiency).[2] Gasses re-introduced from EGR systems will also contain near equilibrium concentrations of NOx and CO; the small fraction initially within the combustion chamber inhibits the total net production of these and other pollutants when sampled on a time average. Most modern engines now require exhaust gas recirculation to meet emissions standards.*

To stop the exhaust gas recycling valve clogging. If you have a 10 gallon tank, fill it with 9 gallons of diesel and 1 gallon of petrol. This acts in the same way as putting a can of fuel additive into the tank.

lmao just got a brand new shinny EGR for my motor that probably doesn't give a shit anyway... And it cost a whopping $14.00 with free shipping from rock auto.. . Have yet to install it.. Because much like my engine, I don't give a shit.
@@maruko7321 probably US dollars because from what i've seen every other country in the world has the sense to just round up to 120 in their pricing lol
Once again your video was extremely helpful, informative and detailed. I don't understand why some people feel the need to make ignorant comments on it but notice that those same people are the ones watching instead of filming their own vids... Keep up the good work!
Excellent video. Only thing I would recommend different is NOT placing the EGR upside down and letting the cleaner sit. If it were good, and only need cleaning, doing so would allow carbon gunk and liquid to enter the diaphragm vacuum area. For best results, DRY clean with a pic or flat head first then use the cleaner. This didn't apply in this case because it wasn't clogged up and the diaphragm was already bad. Hope this helps.
So If I remove the EGR Valve, and it holds a vacuum, I should just clean out the carbon and use the same valve? If it doesn't hold a vacuum, then I should get a new one? Will cleaning it help it keep a vacuum? The mechanic said I needed a new EGR valve according to the computer, so I'm gonna try to clean/fix it myself. I'd rather clean it bc a new one is about $150!
Sam Sloan The EGR should hold vacuum until you release the vacuum. EGR valves can stick open a little. Carbon can hold it open. Try a gas tank carb. cleaner to keep it clean. It also cleans the cylinders. If it leaks down replace it! Check the passage below the EGR valve if it's clogged.
Also note if you're broke as a joke and have a rubber style diaphragm (like on older Honda's) and also have some plasti-dip laying around, you could get by with spraying dip on the diaphragm, I found they tear around the inside edge, sometimes just a pin hole can throw off your idle. Great thorough video though! Note: This works (sometimes) if you hear a hissing sound after you plug the vacuum hole.
Pie Eyed Performance too. The computer was trying to use the a/f ratio for the normal flow of the egr and that was not working so it had to retard timing.
Pie Eyed Maybe it's surprising but PCM's are generally designed to help an engine run better. So disable the EGR and expect slower lap times/poorer results on the Dyno.
Pie Eyed It's bad for performance for sure, just google "egr junk intake" and see for yourself. To avoid a/f ratio issues EGR should be "killed" in the ECU itself, ECU remapped and physically block the flow holes on the intake for the EGR valve. I've had it done on my car. Also when performing this it's good to take the intake off and clean the soot and carbon. Much better airflow
damn i love this guy videos he teaches so much and doesn't rush down anything he takes his time and explain everything i searched how an egr valve works and he explains it simple and even shows a diagram of it keep making videos bro nice job. im even buying tools now to practice what i learn on my car. thank you chrisfix.
You explain it to me like I have no idea what the hell im doing and I THANK YOU FOR THAT ! Finally get it after this vehicle, very informative keep it up man !
+Greg Gallop The EGR system re-inserts already burned gases into the intake system. Since those gases can not be burned again, it lowers the peak combustion temperature, therefore reducing the oxides of nitrogen level.
Viktor P Ford 6.0L Powerstrokes most definitely needs the egr delete and if you buy one ask if the egr delete has been done on it because it'll decrease performance
Kevin Tinajero Should be soon because it needs brakes and I told him it was very dangerous to drive lol. Gotta convince him to give it back to me somehow right ;)
I have a 3rd gen Toyota Prius. I used an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three Nuts in the back and good luck reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler. Used a Torx E8 socket to remove the two Bolts in the back of the EGR cooler. Good video!
Really a great video, well done. I can’t believe that I used to suffer through the “other guys”videos and the endless obnoxious schtick and they don’t even have any helpful information. This is how a video should be done, to all the other guys……… 👍✌
Nope. The EGR actually makes it run worse. It was added in effort to reduce emissions by injecting non combustible particles in the intake, using less fuel IN THEORY. However, EGRs make the engine less efficient and take away performance, while being harmful in the long run. That's why it's one of the most common modifications, especially on diesel trucks.
Great video Chris! My light was on , checked my codes, indicated egr( used paper clip method btw) car was running rough at idle, my egr failed so i replaced for less than $ 60 runs great and no light!!
Another great video Chris, gonna take off and check and clean the one fitted to my jeep grand Cherokee 2.7 litre diesel here in the UK. Due another service come spring, this time including the fuel filter. Did the fuel filter near 20000 miles ago when I purchased the jeep. Thanks Chris. 😊
Attila theHun It cools the combustion chamber and when the combustion chamber is cooler, NOX emissions are reduced. The hotter the combustion chamber the more nitrogen oxide emissions there are.
ChrisFix but hiw do exhaust gases cool the. Combustion chamber? They are supposed to be hot, they dont cool down in an expansion chamber or anything...so they are actually warmung up the combustiin gased that enter the combustion chamber...and as the carnott law states: the less ∆temp between motir and combustion gasrd the less energy is produced( this is why cars usully kick harder in autum/winter than in hit summer)
@@ramyswar296 egr has nothing to do with that.. lower emissions ye but the price is high, bad mpg and slower car in the lower rpm. i blanked mine, got it mapped off and the car is way more responsible after that.
Chris - a chief use for EGR is to cool the combustion chamber peak pressure and temperature thus preventing ping. This is done by the water vapor in the exhaust gas. Water has a very high specific heat and results in lower peak temperatures and pressures and evens up the power delivery all through the power stroke as all the gases expand. So many people do not know the EGR main functioning principle.
I was scrolling thru the comments looking for someone to say "its smog crap just take it off" or that it mucks up the intake. My favorite is the "i gained hp by blocking it off" thought process.
Don't clean it at all. Rip that junk off, throw it in the trash and replace the egr with a block off plate. The egr just hurts gas mileage and performance.
It does not hurt gas mileage or performance. It reduces the combustion temperature during part throttle operation to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The EGR valve is closed at full throttle.
It does reduce power at times, but sending air with very little burn-ready oxygen into the intake reduces the amount of fuel needed for a stoichiometric mix.
I've blocked my EGR off. It's complete junk. After a month of normal driving carbon buildup starts occur and you need to rev it like crazy to get it out. Only saves very small portion of fuel and causes more problems.
I'm 70 ex ENGine builder, back in 69 when I had a SUPERCUDA 440 everything was always spotless there were only 2 grades of gas reg and high test..The cause of all the buildup is EATHANOL IN THE GAS TODAY,it comes from CORN a sugar base !!
They are not that bad on modern gasoline engines... diesel is where you have to watch out. Diesels not only pull in more EGR gasses than gasoline, diesel exhaust gas is much dirtier (soot).
Rusu Traian Cristian Egr cools the engine by stopping combustion from happening so if there’s 80% clean air and 20% Egr the engine isn’t able to combust the 20% so that means your car is slower, less responsive, and shorter engine lifespan
Just did it! Grabbed a whole new valve, the truck is 23 years old. The big nut was sooo stuck we ended up torching her and was able to break it free. Then boom smooth sailing
Kevin It is not easy to do. You need to take it off which is going to be a real pain since it is stuck on there good. You need to clean the gasket surface without getting anything in the intake, you need to put the new one on and hope it seals. Not worth all of the effort when I know the original works.
Alpha Bravo From what I've been told the EGR is an emission thing and has absolutely nothing to do with cooling off cylinders. Hot exhaust gases are ALWAYS hotter than the air coming in the engine. Not sure why he claimed that was its purpose.
The exhaust gases displace oxygen during the combustion process. By routing them back into the cylinders, it decreases the amount of oxygen that is able to mix with fuel. Keep in mind that it is a very small amount that gets mixed in but it definitely prevents the cylinders from getting too hot and makes the exhaust cleaner. I'll also add that this system is not active during wide open throttle for maximum performance and minimum tree hugging so don't worry
It prevents overheating, after combustion process. Doesn't necessarily cool them off like he said, but does aid in the prevention of overheating, by stabilizing the air/fuel mixture.
Alpha Bravo The only thing I can think of is that by doing this and preventing some oxygen from getting in to the mix it prevents a potential lean condition which would cause the cylinders to burn hotter. But That should all be carefully regulated in a fuel injected car anyway so *shrugs*. I'm not an expert so I could be 100% wrong.
Extremely well explained, good video quality, great editing, great voice over and sadly my EGR on my Chevy P30 chassis (looks like a UPS truck made by Grumman) has extremely rusted nuts and studs. I am not even sure if I can see the threads anymore (PA vehicle and I am in NC). Anyways .. ordering a stud removal tool first and planning on having a second intake manifold in better shape handy. Great simple test for vacuum hold!

new EGR Valve p0400 (MADE IN CHINA) Why you install chinesse piece on MERCIAN car I 'm offended (troll)
To stop the exhaust gas recycling valve clogging. If you have a 10 gallon tank, fill it with 9 gallons of diesel and 1 gallon of petrol. This acts in the same way as putting a can of fuel additive into the tank.
You could almost eat off of that engine. How do you keep it so clean?
By cleaning it lol

You are an excellent teacher ! Please show an easy to understand ways to test an electronic EGR valve. Thanks
I will replace the vacuum hoes leading to the egr valve today, thank you for the help. very helpful video keep up the good work
+Miguel Leal You know how it is, the hoes need replacing every once in a while! Once they start leaking I'm on to the next, and just hope it's not contagious... Sorry, I had to xD
Iwish my car had hoes...im stuck with hose.😆
There’s plenty of hoes in my truck!

119 what?
lmao just got a brand new shinny EGR for my motor that probably doesn't give a shit anyway...
Correct. Cleaning will only help it slide open and closed. The vacuum is all about the condition of the diaphragm.
Fanks bro! I've been enlightened once more.
Every time he says it’s really simple my brain starts shaking 😂🤣🤣
🤣
Also note if you're broke as a joke and have a rubber style diaphragm (like on older Honda's) and also have some plasti-dip laying around, you could get by with spraying dip on the diaphragm, I found they tear around the inside edge, sometimes just a pin hole can throw off your idle. Great thorough video though!
Note: This works (sometimes) if you hear a hissing sound after you plug the vacuum hole.
+Yo Fizzle haha, that is a good fix to pass emissions if you dont have the money!
Man the corvette looks brand new sheesh. The exterior and interior are impeccable
I was sad to see a "made in China" part installed in it
By runs "better" I'm assuming you mean better for emissions, not performance?
Pie Eyed Performance too. The computer was trying to use the a/f ratio for the normal flow of the egr and that was not working so it had to retard timing.
Pie Eyed Maybe it's surprising but PCM's are generally designed to help an engine run better. So disable the EGR and expect slower lap times/poorer results on the Dyno.
I drive a Hemi and the EGR valve aint enough 'Merica...unicorns don't equal horsepower so I took it off. *spits in a bucket*
Pie Eyed
lol
Pie Eyed It's bad for performance for sure, just google "egr junk intake" and see for yourself. To avoid a/f ratio issues EGR should be "killed" in the ECU itself, ECU remapped and physically block the flow holes on the intake for the EGR valve. I've had it done on my car. Also when performing this it's good to take the intake off and clean the soot and carbon. Much better airflow
Omg Chris its like your read my mind that's what code came in my truck 😭
I'm in love with your 'vette.
ComandanteJ Thanks a lot! Such a fun car!
damn i love this guy videos he teaches so much and doesn't rush down anything he takes his time and explain everything i searched how an egr valve works and he explains it simple and even shows a diagram of it keep making videos bro nice job. im even buying tools now to practice what i learn on my car. thank you chrisfix.
I didn't know about EGR function until Chris just nailed it, thanks Chris!...👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
just a great explanation, thank you...

+iScott Thanks a lot! I try to make all of my videos this way!
You explain it to me like I have no idea what the hell im doing and I THANK YOU FOR THAT ! Finally get it after this vehicle, very informative keep it up man !
How does hot exhaust gas cool the engine?
The exhaust may be hot, but it's still colder than the engine.
So is outside air, why not bring in outside air - with oxygen in it.
+Greg Gallop They do, but it's not enough. Look through the comments, someone here said something fancy that explains it.
+Greg Gallop The EGR system re-inserts already burned gases into the intake system. Since those gases can not be burned again, it lowers the peak combustion temperature, therefore reducing the oxides of nitrogen level.
+Alan K well said ..
I deleted mine , truck works much better lol no more mess ,!
Viktor P Ford 6.0L Powerstrokes most definitely needs the egr delete and if you buy one ask if the egr delete has been done on it because it'll decrease performance
Increase or decrease?
Clutch The egr decreases power and limits the mileage to around 100,000 miles
I've just done a blank off on my car, much faster and less shit coming out the exhaust
Good call Absolute nightmare on diesels, too.
When are you getting the crown vic back?
Kevin Tinajero Should be soon because it needs brakes and I told him it was very dangerous to drive lol. Gotta convince him to give it back to me somehow right ;)
ChrisFix lol thats great cant wait :) !
Good video!
Hope I never have to do that!

An EGR really makes a diesel run worse
Really a great video, well done. I can’t believe that I used to suffer through the “other guys”videos and the endless obnoxious schtick and they don’t even have any helpful information. This is how a video should be done, to all the other guys……… 👍✌
Yours is the best video I've seen so far, from other videos, on how to clean, the EGR, GOOD TEACHING, now I can clean my.
nice corvette man!
9:44 Correction : These nutts.
Literally replaced my egr value four days ago 😬
Page Mart EGR valves are very bad for your engine it makes it run hotter and decrees engine preformance and gas mileage
"To cool the cylinders"...I thought the EGR reduces nitrogen oxide emission.
Attila theHun It cools the combustion chamber and when the combustion chamber is cooler, NOX emissions are reduced. The hotter the combustion chamber the more nitrogen oxide emissions there are.
ChrisFix but hiw do exhaust gases cool the. Combustion chamber? They are supposed to be hot, they dont cool down in an expansion chamber or anything...so they are actually warmung up the combustiin gased that enter the combustion chamber...and as the carnott law states: the less ∆temp between motir and combustion gasrd the less energy is produced( this is why cars usully kick harder in autum/winter than in hit summer)
don trump Learn English
@@rronaldreagan have you heard of nos making cars faster?
@@ramyswar296 egr has nothing to do with that.. lower emissions ye but the price is high, bad mpg and slower car in the lower rpm. i blanked mine, got it mapped off and the car is way more responsible after that.
4:39 look at this guys veins
Okay! Lol
Chris Fix is my go to channel if I have a problem 😁
Don't clean it at all. Rip that junk off, throw it in the trash and replace the egr with a block off plate. The egr just hurts gas mileage and performance.
It does not hurt gas mileage or performance. It reduces the combustion temperature during part throttle operation to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The EGR valve is closed at full throttle.
Frankie Bleddyn Not just the west cost, the have the clean air force in georgia. Almost the same thing.
It does reduce power at times, but sending air with very little burn-ready oxygen into the intake reduces the amount of fuel needed for a stoichiometric mix.
guys ist better to remove it
^ Well put!
@@rayoliver6807 I have a diesel engine
EGR is the devil on modern cars. I hate it
EGR SHOULD BE BANNED. YOUR A SMART GUY. ITS POLLUTING OUR ENGINES. CONGRES!!!
You are wrong! It cools the engine. Learn more auto-mechanics!
EGR top 3 things:
- cools the engine
- lowers fuel consumption
- lowers CO2 emissions
How is this evil, btw?
They are not that bad on modern gasoline engines... diesel is where you have to watch out. Diesels not only pull in more EGR gasses than gasoline, diesel exhaust gas is much dirtier (soot).
Rusu Traian Cristian Egr cools the engine by stopping combustion from happening so if there’s 80% clean air and 20% Egr the engine isn’t able to combust the 20% so that means your car is slower, less responsive, and shorter engine lifespan
I don't think I have this but I learned a lot from your videos keep the channel up ChrisFix you make our lives more easy 👌👍👍👍
Just did it! Grabbed a whole new valve, the truck is 23 years old. The big nut was sooo stuck we ended up torching her and was able to break it free. Then boom smooth sailing
why not replace with a new gasket if it is so easy to do so?
Kevin I was wondering the same thing. *Confused*
Kevin maybe an older gasket is more rubbery and molded so it would work better than a new one
It might not be. He'd have to peel it off or scrape it off if it's that bad lol.
Kevin Just like i tell my gf if its not broken don't fix it. She kept messing with everything under the hood and the car wouldn't turn on.
Kevin It is not easy to do. You need to take it off which is going to be a real pain since it is stuck on there good. You need to clean the gasket surface without getting anything in the intake, you need to put the new one on and hope it seals. Not worth all of the effort when I know the original works.
Very informative
Thanks!

can't we use brake cleaner to clean EGR valve

Amateur q. How does hot exhaust gas help cool the engine? Or did i misunderstand?
Alpha Bravo It also warms up the coolant, besides that only bad for the engine for sake of emmisions.
DAYHAM!! what a competent, knowledgable, and comprehesive video! THANKS!!
+Harry West Thanks a lot!
