Thank you very much!!! You really went to great lengths to show everything. I have a 2000 Solara with the 2.2L. At 20 years old now. She’s held up like brand new. Only 139k in her fully loaded. Runs perfect and smooth as silk. Though we all have new and newer vehicles. My wife and my kids still love her. And I refuse at this point to sell her. They just don’t make this kind of quality anymore. Thank you again.
Thanks for the video 👍 I was going crazy trying to figure out why there wasn’t vacuum in Port P. I removed the throttle body and found gunk jammed the pin hole size vacuum port. Cleaned it thoroughly and now getting vacuum and the dreadful P0401 code when away. Still need to drive the car long distance and make sure there’s no additional CEL. Next step is to get it Smogged/Emission test. Update: 97 Camry passed emission test successfully!
How did you clean out the gunk in the port? Where was the vacuum port located? I took a quick peek when I changed the air intake hose recently, and my throttle body looked really clean.
@@SeanCMonahan Use carburetor cleaner and shop air. The ports are located on the throttle body topside. Follow the vacuum modulator small hoses to the TB. They'll be marked P, Q, and R. Manually move the throttle body butterfly back so you can see the tiny pin hole size ports inside the TB that will need to be cleaned. Blow some shop air through the ports to remove any carbon deposit inside these ports. Once cleaned, use a vacuum gage to see if the ports are producing vacuum while accelerating to 1500 rpm or more. Hope this helps.
Great vidio James the best I ever viewed helped me solve my flow restriction problem which was not in the transducer itself but in the hose that goes off the bottom to the EGR pipe was clogged along with the pipe was clogged I cleaned it all out w/o removing the EGR valve which was a pain to get at the 4 bolts excellent vidio Thank-You
I have the exact same car 2000 Toyota Camry 4cyl. Replaced the VSV (EGR vacuum solenoid) and the check engine light went out after driving 50 miles. The computer tests P0401 by energizing the VSV during cruising speed and looks for a quick response from the Map sensor. Good luck to anyone trying to remove the VSV, it's buried on the back of engine. I unplugged the blue connector by reaching from the passenger side, wheel removed. Remounted a new VSV on the passenger side of the intake manifold. VSV bracket reversed so the connector could reach it. Just buy a new VSV, don't bother testing the VSV, it's a heat related, intermittent problem.
Michael Mirro i will have to give this a try as my EGR system passed all the vacuum/pressure tests mentioned in this video (and others) Logically i shouldn’t have a P0401 but if there could be an intermittent issue with the VSV as you say that would explain my senseless situation
"The ultimate quick n' dirty" haha awesome! Great explanation of the EGR system too. Interesting how the EGR controls are both vacuum-regulated and computer-monitored. Definitely don't see that much on newer vehicles...
The only thing I don't like about your channel is we don't get enough of u!!! Love every video!! U ain't into super fancy. But u get the job done and r sure we get the theory behind it. Thank u! Could your Solus command that solenoid to open?
Thanks for the compliment. I never checked to see if the scanner did any controls. Especially since the system is very simple and the computer energizes the solenoid pretty much every time you give it throttle. Even in park. So it was just as easy to bypass that transducer with a vacuum connector and see if egr valve opened briefly during that window its supposed to. Thanks again
Great break down, I've got one of those in right now., 401. One well un understood, thing that seems to go unchecked, is the engine light with the 401 wont re situate until engine off and restart. You can drive it forever with no engine light until engine off and restart. I hope your code and light stayed cleared. Thanks for all explained.
Sorry Jayne Sparks. A better instructor would 1. Have the "Mitchell" ready, 2. Know that the 'Q' is not a 'D', 3. Know what the "R" does... 4. Prepare a better diagram, not one that he admits is terrible. And I am only five minutes into a 15 minute video.
Need video for Toyota Prius 3rd gen?. Anyway, from much research.....to remove the EGR cooler/assemble...... use an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three Nuts in the back. I had a hard time reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler. Then, used a Torx E8 socket for the two Bolts ( in the back of EGR cooler) and I finally freed the EGR assembly. It's literally impossible to remove EGR valve only for DYI non professional therefore remove the whole EGR assembly. Good video J.D !!!
Mitchell's down? Try Danner OnDemand Analog Schematic Services! Get the job done, at a fraction of the cost(tm). Another great video, Danner! This system reminds me a lot of Ford's DPFE system. I feel like I remember something about "mind your Ps and Qs" regarding Toyotas from way back in my auto tech college days...
Should the EGR open when the engine is cold? When I rev it up with the engine cold the valve opens making the engine hesitate. When I unplug that solenoid underneath it does not do that. I wonder if the ECM is bad? I've replaced that solenoid and the vacuum modulator and I still get codes P0401 and P0402. Also, does the valve stay open when you keep the RPMs up? In the video you don't maintain RPMs: you just rev it up and down.
thank you for your time sir great video my A to B 01 camry work car just threw this code thursday ima factory certified ford technician but nuts and bolts are all the same fixed my car no problem with your video
With the whole EGR system working correctly how much vacuum is being applied to the EGR valve diaphragm? I have close to 20 inches of mercury all the way up till the hose leaving the vsv and entering the top of EGR valve. only getting around 5 inches I'm guesing before the valve open? is this correct? or should it be higher? any help is much appreciated
+Rudy Reyna I want to say the bad bpt I see have low vacuum like that too. But remember they are controlled by exhaust back pressure by name. Those hoses split and the little port coming off of the bottom of the egr valve that that hose is attached to clog up with carbon. If u don't have enough back pressure pushing on the transducer. It won't open the vacuum port enough either. Those are simple systems. When it's warm enough, the vacuum solenoid allows vacuum to the supply port of the bpt, and egr will open just revving in park. U can bypass the bpt and feel the egr lift with ur finger. Then maybe try a long vaccum hose to the bottom of the bpt and blow air with your mouth into it and see if it works that way( everything else hooked back up correctly ).
My EGR valve will only hold 5 inches of vacuum (vacuum guage T fitting in between vsv and egr). The vac hose from the VSV is 20 inches vacuum when above idle and warmed up. I also got the Dorman vacuum modulator (bpt) which seems to allow more vacuum at lower speeds. Just sent away for a new EGR valve, see if P0401 goes away. The old EGR valve vacuum diaphragm might be leaking. 2000 Toyota Camry 4cyl auto
Oh. Got it. Hard without a hand vacuum pump but same thing... Put a longer vacuum hose on egr valve and suck on it. U may not suck enough to open valve... Ha.. but if u put ur tongue on the hose, it should stick to it due to the vacuum if the egr diaphragm is good
Ok, replacing the EGR valve fixed it. The P0401 code went away as soon as the car warmed up. The bad EGR valve held just enough vacuum to almost work, but not at lower rpm. Buy Toyota parts if you can afford it. I bought Dorman for a cheap fix.
Just bought this very car. Light came on driving it home. Should have used code reader BEFORE buying not after. I will check these two parts and hopefully fix it.
Sweet video James and I love how f-ing dirty your hands are! Who “back probes “ anything anyway when you can butcher the wires or fumble around with wires and a meter with a bench test ! You are a very skilled guy someone my gramps used to call a “crackerjack” thank you for the vid!
I had a similar issue. Turned out the thermostat was stuck open not letting the engine run at normal operating temp at 198 deg. The ECU thinks your engine is cold and will not let the EGR system work properly, causing your CEL to come on. Just a suggestion, hope this helps...
Thanks so much for this video. I just got this code in my 96 V6 Camry that growls due to hold on exhaust somewhere. Any chance the growling made the code trip? It's been a growler for years.
Hello James. Will a broken intake hose throw a P0401 code. I have the same car did everything on this video and while Im spraying the two vacuum port on the throttle body I noticed a crack on the intake hose just after the clamp for the throttle body. Great video by the way. Very helpful. Thanks
If u mean the intake duct from air filter to throttle body, I don't think so. I have seen the egr ports clog on these. Especially the little backpressure pipe to the transducer. Pull the egr off and look close at that stuff. It's not too hard
Nice drawing, I think community college does drawing classes? (just kidding, my drawing skills are worse) Thanks for taking the time to share some egr testing without expensive gadgets! Keep em coming!
Hum- ha it's like a thumbs up but at my end it shows the Canadian Flag, hum I didn't know it showed up like that at your end, I better stop doing that , haha , I did your review today to go out next week and I'm laughing at myself laughing at Clark. LMAO
+TheWiseGuy do u have a vacuum pump? U can pull vacuum on valve and see if car stumbles or stalls to confirm valve operation. U need to check if vacuum is even making it to the transducer from the electric solenoid when u Rev the engine off idle. And if both of those are ok. The little metal line from the egr that ends up under the transducer can clog and u won't get enough back pressure to make the transducer operate and allow the vacuum from the solenoid to make it to the egr valve
James Danner That must be my problem! I replaced the egr, vsv, and transducer, and still no vacuum getting to egr so must have clogged back pressure pipe going to egr!
Dear, i am facing this issue since months, egr is functioning properly, tested. Modulator was jammed and replaced with new. VSV was bad and replaced with new. Still got CEL p0401. EGR passage had gunk, cleaned somehow, the hole attached to intake from egr had gunk too, cleaned well but unfortunately now i have 2 codes at a time. P0401 and P0402. Do you think is it related to carbon been messing up with my system, what should i clean next to open the flow ? Or is it something else ? Any help would be appreciated guys ? Please 🙏😞
If you already change the solenoid and egr valves along with the purge vacuum switch then is definitely going to be your charcoal canister which needs to be replaced
Hey James, would you have any ideas on why my 2003 Mazda Protege DX 2.0 Automatic sputters after refueling and also sometimes randomly idles rough, and also is lacks power from a stop while accelerating? Once I am up to speed the car is fine, it is only when the car is from a stop accelerating. It acts like it has no power until i get the rpm's above around 1500. No CEL's. I thought it would be the EGR, but I replaced that, so I tested the EVAP Purge Solenoid and it seems to function fine as well.
Ok.. my first thought was purge due to the fill up issue...tough if it's intermittent. But u could prove it while its happening by disconnecting the tank side of purge and checking for vacuum ( as long as its not being commanded/clicking. ) if so, disconnect the plug as well and see if vacuum exists. The other thought is those engines have a pcv system under the intake above the starter where there is a small curved pcv hose that splits and causes a pretty decent vacuum leak. It would be nice if u had a scanner to see fuel trim readings at idle. Or if u don't mind getting wet. while idling.. Spray a hose up under intake above starter(radiator side) and listen for the gurgling hiss of water being sucked in
I'm having a issue with my 98 camry. When i come to a stop or in park and the cars running the idol goes up and down and i think its going to die but never does. Once i start moving everything is fine car runs great. I replaced the egr modulating valve and that wasn't the problem. If anyone can help please do.
I was told last resort was to clean the EGR internal engine passage. If not fixed after exhausting all recommendation, is to replace e the ECM computer 🤔
Change my vsv don't bother taking the old one out just unplug it and take out the hose and relocate the new vsv on top by the intake!!!!! Fuck that 12mm bolt you'll be there all day trying get it out.

I understand
Freddie Cordova hey man do you a facebook
Oh my gosh this is like car surgery. I didn't go to school long enough to do this.
That was a great and informative video, James. I guess the management let you do your thing. LoL.
Yea. I just gotta find the right time. Gotta keep all the other stuff moving... I need a go pro... Ha

Great video. I sure don't miss EGR systems on Toyotas. Gotta love that VVT!
Yep. Just newer stuff to break..Ha
+James Danner yup! now it's cracked cam phasers.
Great video and description. Thanks.
I live in Florida but I don’t have emissions testing should I fix this or leave it? It doesn’t seem to affect my car too much at all.
Yes it can damage the engine over time.
esta bueno esto le ayuda mucho a todos gracias

Replaced my vsv valve still getting that code my EGR valve is brand new so imma try replace that modulator..
Real sharp testing there Danner, I like it. Great vid Thanks 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Thanks Steve. ....what's caca?

Awesome. I can't wait
@James Danner caca is 💩 . 🤣
Hey james, I changed the EGR Vacuum Valve, and erased the code.. A week later code came up again .. What do I do?
+TheWiseGuy do u have a vacuum pump?
U can pull vacuum on valve and see if car stumbles or stalls to confirm valve operation.
U need to check if vacuum is even making it to the transducer from the electric solenoid when u Rev the engine off idle. And if both of those are ok. James Danner That must be my problem! I replaced the egr, vsv, and transducer, and still no vacuum getting to egr so must have clogged back pressure pipe going to egr!
Really great video
DUDE!! THANKS BIG!!! TIME!! having abit of trouble with the autozone parts puschers
Great video and advice
theirs a vacuum diagram on the emissions label under the hood? correct?
You know....I never looked. U r probably right. I could have shown at least that in vid....thanks for participating
+James Danner either way... got it done rite!
LOVED THE MIRROR TEST
That baby picture with Santha brought me here 👍🏻
+Emmanuel Morales sweet
Dear, i am facing this issue since months, egr is functioning properly, tested. Modulator was jammed and replaced with new. VSV was bad and replaced with new.
Still got CEL p0401.
EGR passage had gunk, cleaned somehow, the hole attached to intake from egr had gunk too, cleaned well but unfortunately now i have 2 codes at a time. P0401 and P0402.

If you already change the solenoid and egr valves along with the purge vacuum switch then is definitely going to be your charcoal canister which needs to be replaced
Bro legit video thanks so much great info and easy to follow thanks again
nice diagnosis
My back pressure line keeps blowing off? I'm not sure what is wrong
What would happen if I would of take off the EGR valve? Will it still run
+Zachery Sonnier not good if it did. U would have a big intake vacuum leak and an exhaust leak at that mating surface
hey great video helped me out big time
I pushed underneath and it didn't stall or the rpms didn't drop at all
У меня Камри 25 401 показывает ошибку поменял оба клапана датчик шланги не чего не помогло не знаю что делать

greg parlier I have exactly the same problem here, don't know what to do, please someone help us, thanks
You have take the intake apart and clean it out. That's the problem. Check Scotty Kilmer.
vacuum leak?
I was told last resort was to clean the EGR internal engine passage. If not fixed after exhausting all recommendation, is to replace e the ECM computer 🤔
Coolant temp sensor
13:16 check your MAP sensor connections, as the P0401 is triggered by that! I have had fits getting rid of this code.
Wait so what was wrong
Great diag👍
Thank you!
Pittsburgh Dad? Is that you?
i need the number Phone this mecanic because my car have this problem
Thank you
Good fix
U clogged up my memory with that excessively long response......;)
thanks James
Always welcome

Change my vsv don't bother taking the old one out just unplug it and take out the hose and relocate the new vsv on top by the intake!!!!! Fuck that 12mm bolt you'll be there all day trying get it out.
tappets sure making too much noise too.
Thanks👍
