Given the accuracy and repeatability possible with decent CNC equipment, I'm amazed that Gibson have people manually adjusting the fit of necks (with the subsequent need to rout for pickups etc. _after_ the neck's been fitted, to make sure these line up with the imperfect neck). No wonder they're a) so expensive and b) so inconsistent. Any production engineer worth his salt should be able to set up the CNC to make consistent neck pockets and matching tenons, possibly with some self-locating features to help the components align properly.
I have no experience in wood working but know enough to understand what you are saying and i agree. I am not real pleased that Gibson is doing this way and do not understand why the tenon has a trapezoid shape while the mortis is not that shape at all? I would think for the best fit the necks tenon would fit the mortis like a puzzle piece? can you tell me if this is wrong? and lastly i actually prefer the Long tenon Gibson used in the 50's to this modern method.

I bought a Gibson 335 in 2017, à 2016 I believe. never use it a lot, not happy with pickups etc. so I bought some new pickups two-month ago, and a LESTREM by Duesenberg. when I decide with my luthier to instal everything we discovered that the truss-rod was fully blocked inside and probably from the factory because we never open it from the first day I bought it. it's like this guitar is new played 10 times at home. So I was one more time disappointed by Gibson, but my luthier show me something worst. My 335 is a normal one, nothing custom. But I was in front of a guitar made only at 100 units. the 3 made for my country weren't in good condition. but they where new !!! limited edition. vibrola wasn't working on pickup wasn't connected, the varitone wasn't working well. and this was, they said, a limited run. so in one day a discovered that my Gibsons are worst than any of my Epiphone. DO YOU THINK this normal. we are talking about guitars that cost 5K !!!!!!!! you can make all the videos you want, you are not telling the truth. you sell guitars they don't work. if every time we buy a Gibson we need to go to the luthier to be sure that this guitar is working, this not good. So I can't sold my guitar, and really can't enjoy it because we can't fix it right. Want to say thank you to Gibson for that. I lost so much money.
I will keep enjoying my 70’s Suzuki black beauty. Paid $85 at a pawnshop because the bridge pickup was toast. I wanted a custom but couldn’t afford one and stumbled across the Suzuki one day looking for used tools. It had the looks and a set neck. Before I even found out about the pickup I already had plans to completely revamp the electronics worked out in my head. The guy wanted $200 and I got him down to $85 with it being broken. Now I have a damn close replica of a custom that I don’t have to be crazy cautious with because it didn’t cost me $4000
Chris Ullery they may be expensive but you must not know much about guitar construction to directly compare cost of Gibson to fender. I love both companies. Own both. But dude, it’s quite simple to google the construction methods of each and realize why one cost more than the other. I also prefer Fender at the end of the day. But there are many legitimate reasons why the costs are substantially higher to build a Gibson guitar.
I still they are over priced now days for the quality, but what a dream job. It's pretty cool that you can pick out any guitar and even pick out the wood and stuff for your 20 year anniversary.
I don't understand why people who don't like Gibsons feel they have to talk shit in the comments. If you don't dig them don't watch the videos. I have a 2013 L.P. Traditional and I love it, it is far and away the best guitar I have ever owned. I have U.S. made Strats and have had Ibanez and Yamaha guitars. My Paul blows them away. I look forward to getting a ES 335 one day.
I’m blown away by how inconsistent their quality control is, even to this day. I love a good Gibson and have owned/own many, but I’ve played and examined so many that were flat out bad. Since the 70s, there has not been enough proper oversight: craftsman checking each other’s work. Sorry, but anybody in the know is aware of that fact.

Buy a tokai, they’re fucking excellent 👍
Would love to have another Les Paul, this time I want a chambered, lightweight guitar. Not thrilled having a 8lb+ boat anchor around my neck.
When are we getting the Icon: Jerry Cantrell video?!?!?!?!
Now I have a damn close replica of a custom that I don’t have to be crazy cautious with because it didn’t cost me $4000
For me it seems like every Gibson neck has it’s own profile and angle. Usually the fretboards have a hump at the joint area.
Very, very cool that Gibson rewards long-term employees with custom made guitars. I dig that.
Is that a traditional with split coil?
What do you do for a living?
- I am a neck fitter 😁
Or "I carve bodies"
I liked the part where they sue everyone.
Yep, no Gibson is worth what Gibson sells them for. Fender for me.
Companies that directly copy a product should be sued.
I see a Les Paul with a scalloped neck, anyone know what model that is?
I really want one of these shirts.....❤
Please explain the headstock pitch someday
I wanna work there
I still they are over priced now days for the quality, but what a dream job. It's pretty cool that you can pick out any guitar and even pick out the wood and stuff for your 20 year anniversary.
And then I realized - I want a flame top Supreme!
Nice. Time to get the 60th anniversary 59 out and give it a spank.
I have a SG
Bajen los precios y suban su calidad!!!
My Gibson ES-335 (2010) is garbage: dysfunctional truss rod, inaccurate frets, faulty nut.
My My 1966 ES 335TD is absolutely magnificent.
Then you should have returned it...Obviously
Urbin if you’re the original owner Gibson will do the warranty work no charge. If not, a qualified luthier can make it perfect.
Bean counter mentality..
@ipmala not entirely true although it used to be.
As I know, the (correct) neck fitting is crucial phase in the entire process.
