- James Hetfield sat down with us at Guitar Center San Francisco and talked about becoming a musician, rising to fame with Metallica and even demoed his signature ESP LTD Signature Iron Cross guitar for us. All the while, customers continued to shop in the store, having no idea that the legendary guitarist was playing in the next room.
The ESP LTD James Hetfield Signature Iron Cross is available now at Guitar Center: www.guitarcenter.com/ESP/LTD-...

I met him too and I agree. Newstead at the time was a very humble nice guy!

Same here, met the one and only Geddy Lee of Rush at a book signing in late 2019, such a humble man
A friend of mine who worked as a roadie said he was an asshole!

i remember when this video came out, i’ll never forget it. i was going through my “metallica phase” and was just “enjoying playing covers” and i was getting really good; i thought i was just going to keep it a hobby, until i saw this. everything James says is so well thought out and comes straight from the heart, and it’s so inspirational and honest. THIS ALONE, made me want to be a professional guitar player. watching this as a 12 year old kid made me so excited and so inspired and so hopeful; i’d had never felt so inspired in my life by anybody before. i attended Berklee for a bit, and now i play lots of gigs, make money playing guitar, and get to do my own stuff on the side. james and GC can’t even fathom how many guitarists and musicians they’ve inspired with this. i had no friends growing up, music was all i had, and all i did growing up was sit in my room with my $50 yamaha junior size acoustic playing until my fingers were actually bleeding. this video alone did so much for me back then, and even still that holds true now. there will never be another band like metallica. and there will never be anyone like james.

This is the #1 man in metal. Granted, can't shred like Dime could, can't hit the notes Dio could, but he fucking put it out there like no other, and still is.
Ozzy? Bruce Dickinson? Rob Halford? Tom Araya? Philip Anselmo?

Idk, I think Lemmy, Mustaine, Araya, Dickinson, Ozzy, Dime, Anselmo, Osegueda, C. Billy, Blitz, Zetro, Schuldiner, and Schenker blow him out for just pure awesomeness and skill. But whatever. Just my opinion. I think he's the No. 1 most popular but way down there for skill IMO

@Lucas Holder oh I'm not saying he isn't great. When someone asks me who some great guitarists are I think, Eric Clapton , Hendrix, Eric Johnson, Van Halen .... never think Metallica lol. Even though they've given us some of the most hypnotizing melodies.

Michael
While it is nice to see, I do miss his wrath and "no fucks giving" attitude
+Michael and The Crimson Fucker you are BOTH correct. James has come full-circle. I love the way he is now, but I will never forget the first time I saw the "EET FUK" guitar in 1989 with James COMMANDING the crowd and stalking the microphone like a lion feasting on a fresh kill. James is now a refined musician. He has the guitar chops in him to play anything, and although his voice left him years ago and he is trying to find a "sweet spot" with it lately, he is still trying nonetheless. At the end of the day, most of us have envy for his talent and success.
Yes, and a softness to the MUSIC that wasn't there before either, sadly.
Is this softness and kindness obvious to the animals he blows away with his guns?
Miley Saint hunting deer, bear or other animals with a properly-sized gun is a humane way to kill game. James Hetfield told me how to play guitar 28 years ago through his music. When he is talking about playing guitar he talks right from my heart. When he riffs in this video even more. I watched this video for the 20th time now. I think you need to get older to understand who your inspirations in life was. For me at age 38 one of my biggest influences was him. I dont like everything he did in his career. But i can undestand it. Today i am playing everything from metal to jazz to blues and pop and more. But in my heart i will always play james hetfield rhythm guitar. I never understood soloing. When he says he always was into rhythm guitar i totally agreed and finally i understood. What a great video. I will watch it again and again. I know it
Playing drums on guitar. That’s basically how James sees it. The best rhythm players are very percussive. Soloing only makes sense to me in a short and subtle way, in certain parts of a song where adding a simple embellishment will add to the song and make it better. Too many soloists make it all about themselves instead of actually trying to make the song better. Yes, rhythm is where it’s at for me too.

Scott M I was never a huge fan of metallica but their personalities crack me up and their good story tellers at that.😂 now I'm slowly getting into them and figuring out their past etc. definitely cliff was a badass and it showed. their blessed to do what they do.
He looked more badass with mustache & long hair though. I didn't like when he cut his hair & adopted the 1950's greaser look (with glasses)
Despite their issues at times, they were always good guys. I went to a live concert shortly after he got burned. They had another guitarist but he was out in his compression bandages doing a show. At the beginning he said he would need a few breaks but we would get a full show. He took a few breaks backstage & a few breaks where he just sat down & told a story but we got a full, long show. That's where he got my respect as a human, you could tell he wasn't going to do just enough show to keep the tour going. He wanted to fans to get 100%.
he was my #1 hero all through school, and i was fortunate enough to meet him and others in '95. he was awesome naturally, but he was still drinking hard - because of cliff, i guess, and he was hard work to communicate with. seeing him now, some 20 plus years later, he seems so the man i wanted him to be back then.

Thanks for sharing your gift with us for all these years, your music has enriched mine and millions of other's lives more than you probably understand.
I come back to this video just to listen to that part, definitely song material.
Steal it lol. It's yours. I won't tell anyone.
No such thing as 7:40 ish it either is or isnt. besides at 7:40 hes talking
I heard that and was thinking what song is that? Sounds great.
@@danielhoward8354 It EiThEr iS oR iT IsNt, shut up dude no one likes that pretentious shit. Stop acting like your better than people everyone knows what he meant.
Imagine being those high school kids in “Obsession” and telling James Hetfield his original songs sucked lol.
James got the last laugh....🤣
I would be that headass fan
Well he probably did suck back then.
@@somefuckindude4236 He never sucked!
@@scottboomer5908 get off his jock dude. Some of their shit still sucks. Alot of its cool tho.
No matter how hard I try I can never play Battery like James
or blackened :(
I love both of these riffs more than anything. It's so awesome to think Jason Newsted wrote that fast riff. James heard it and said Man this is going to open our AJFA record. Thank you Jason.
cause u suck
Julian Merghart we all play differently, you can play as good as James but you can't be just like James. But I believe you can play similar to James :)
The matter is not to sound like Hetfield does, it's to sound the way you like it :)
I come back to this video periodically. James is a musical genius.
Mature grounded James Hetfield is by far the best version of James Hetfield. There's something very comforting and soothing about listening to him talk about his experiences; sort of like the way listening to a Morgan Freeman narration makes you feel all comfortable and safe.
Imagine going to Guitar Centre and seeing James Hetfield. That would be amazing

i wanna be able to sit down with guitar center one day and say "Metallica was the band that just totally lit me up"
Basically my dream
what i was thinking exactly
Me too.
I’ve come back to this again and again, and the riff/lick James works on thru this clip I really hope gets a release one day. The three variations from 3:30, 7:00 and 11:17 are amazing. Melancholic but so beautiful.
This riffs are perfect for power ballad. I hope they will use it on 72 seasons
Is the riff at 3:30 a song? Fell like I’ve heard it before
@@breadsticks6409 Tried Shazam’ing all the sections - nothing. Hopefully James will put it together into a song one day. The riff lends itself to both clean and overdriven tones so well. 🤘
@@breadsticks6409 it sounds like the one fleetwood mac song rhiannon i think. Not exactly the same though
I've got it tabbed out if anyone wants to play around with it.
Humble man. Nice to hear from him as an adult after listening to his songs as a young boy
as corny as it sounds but I'm thankful his mother bought that guitar for him can you imagine what metal would be like if she said no to him
+austin cutty The same as it is today !
Not even close
austin cutty I am not trying to insult the band your fan of, but there is obsolutely nothing Metallica revolutionized as far as sound goes apart from Cliff Burton's way of approaching the bass, the main thing is that they made thrash metal popular, seeing how many thrash metal bands were around in the eighties if they had not done it someone would have, the sixties and seventies were the real revolutionairy days.
+MrShadowofthewind I don't think dimebag would have the same sound he was pretty deep into metallica songs
+MrShadowofthewind fast downpicking a lot of clean riffs and the harmonies they played ..I know maiden harmonized a lot but not in the same way
Just Imagine the Hunger of James.
Started out a band at the age of 17, practising everyday, making Immortal songs at a very young age and still doing it today even when he's getting older.
fr 👏🏽👏🏽
Practicing**
The gift of music never dies.
I guess he did the point: it's just a need
You know it’s the most successful band when they’re still headlining festivals to sold out crowds and even twice for two nights
He's very nice and sincere. I appreciate it.
One of the best ftontmen of all time. Not negotiable. Amazing talent and very influential. Thanks James.
That Battery riff never ceases to kick my ass every time I hear it. How the fuck do you even play that?...
Mitch Farkas with practice
it's easy. you've just got to follow the beat correctly. most people think that the snare hit is on the one, but it's not. the snare is the off-beat. follow the kickdrum.... that's the key
i've seen 12 year old girls play that..note for note
tasteegold7772 The ones in your basement don't count.
Mitch Farkas
what are you babbling about kid?
02:10 "I wrote some songs, they didn't like them.. They just wanted to play covers"...
If their regret could only be measured...
oh the millions of dollars they threw away ......

@@fendertremolo9793 thanks man. Corrected.
It doesn't mean that they would necessarily become a huge metal band. The chemistry wouldn't have been there. Maybe they sucked at songwriting or didn't have ideas. James was destined to meet lars and kirk
They must kick themselves in the balls everyday
Been watching this video for years over and over when I need to feel inspired as well as when I need a pick me up. Just listening to Papa talk, is so relaxing.
I saw this video when it first came out and then i collected the magazine that had his quote about music being his way of speaking and i hung it on my wall for a very long time. I related alot to James as a kid and as an adult. He is a big inspiration to me to play the guitar
“But Eddie Van Halen’s got long hair...” For some reason I remembered that quote after I heard the news. RIP.
MICHAEL SCHENKER HAS LONG HAIR TOO!
Same man. It sucks that we lost Eddie, and I'm not even a huge VH fan but I'm mostly grateful for his existence because how many other great musicians wouldn't be here if he hadn't revived rock n roll.
idk if anyone here knows tomoyasu hotei, japanese guitarist, when he was a kid (japan really strict) he was expelled from school for his long hair and replied "Jesus had long hair!"
@@larrywexner4163 My brother said the same thing to our Asst. Principal in High School. The guy laughed his ass off.
It was cool to hear the guy I picture when I think of metal type of music (I'm into hard rock and classic rock and can't do the screaming type of metal) mention he wanted to be like EVH. I have loved VH since I was a kid (born in 1980), although my favorite musician is Sammy Hagar (He is still performing damn well for being 73 years old, unlike DLR, but I am a huge fan of the VH albums with Dave) who grew up where I did and still live. To me, it seemed more like VH and Metallica were both at the front of their game, and I assumed similar in age, but that they just were different styles. I didn't think of Metallica as the new guys, but then again I grew up listening to both without knowing much about the bands until the late 90's. They are all iconic guys and bands.
some say to this day james hetfield has never upstrummed a guitar.
If I had a penny for every time James upstrummed, I'd have no pennies
I mean, he upstrums as part of the gallops at 11:04, but that's part of the gallop, not a downbeat
Janusz Reguła it was all downstrokes. he’s that fast.
PrinceOfM4rs20 __ srsly?
He never "strums" period. Downpick
This is why Metallica is so awesome.
There’s no pretensions, just great riffs and great music.
What an absolutely awesome interview🤙Great story James🤘
What a genuinely nice guy.
