    So to repair it you just flow a high viscocity glue into every fret and clamp it down with a correct radius block, let it dry, remove excess glue, check if it needs to be leveled, if yes you level, crown it, polish the frets, clean up and oil the ebony board, check if the nut grooves need to be touched up (usually yes). That thing is loved and looks awesome, beat up black customs look so awesome!

    I love this! ... I've found the work time on thin CA glue to be really unpredictable. And those frets are so incredibly loose. I think I would have just re-fretted it. But you obviously made that work. always impressive.

    I also found your method of coating the fretboard with wax to prevent excess glue from getting into the wood grain to be a stroke of brilliance, as is the use of your guitar stand combined with the vise to position the guitar where you needed it.

    Hi what is the best way to take out the frets that have been glued into the slots? Without damaging the original slots or making them wider. I'm worried that heat can change the shape of the neck on old guitars and some will not change back to the original position... thank you.

    • @petrekguitars
      @petrekguitars  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for your question. The best way ist to get them out without using heat…. But if it’s necessary to hear them up because they are glued in I would prefer using a soldering iron and process very carefully especially if you have a Neck Binding. I see a lot of people out there glueing the new Frets into the Fingerboard. In my opinion this is not always necessary.. Best Regards Nik

    • @smollande
      @smollande 5 місяців тому

      @@petrekguitars thank you Nik! I agree completely. If the slot and the fret is a good fit and the fret is bent correctly to the radius, glue should not be used. Glue is like the last resort. I'll remember your advice on the soldering iron! Best regards, Cathy

    Very nice job. Have you considered removing the excess glue with a solvent like acetone? There is a risk that it dissolves the glue below the frets but if you use small amounts like on a cotton swab it may only dissolve the excess.

    • @petrekguitars
      @petrekguitars  4 місяці тому

    I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that the bridge pickup was swapped out at some point, seeing as it is 8 years older than the guitar, and there is no way they had 8 Y/O pickups laying around. It does sound good, like any great rock n roll machine should.

    • @petrekguitars
      @petrekguitars  9 місяців тому

      Thanks a lot for your Feedback. Yes you are correct ....In the 80´s Gibson used the Bill Lawrence Pickups you can point them because there were "waxed" or better fill with black epoxy. Like on the Neck Pickup. But if the Pickup was damaged there is no way to repair it. So I assume that this was the case and someone installed the 1979 Gibson Pickup in the Bridge position. Best Regards Nik

    • @petrekguitars
      @petrekguitars  8 місяців тому

      Hey Jim, this can have several reasons. The Fretslots were to sloppy and if so the repair guy didn’t glue the Frets in. Or what I assume is that frets were glued in and by polishing with a power tool the glue get soft and the frets get loose and cause this problem. Best Regards Nik

    Great looking and sounding guitar and good job on the repair. The piece of wood on the dab of CA glue to check whether or not it is dry is a nice trick, I'll use that one! Personally, I use a razor blade as a scraper to remove the CA glue squeeze out. Scrape in the direction of the wood grain and you'll be left with a nicer finish (and no risk of chips with the chisels). Just my two cents :)

    The frets look really not worn so yes, no need to refret (what you answered below..) - btw; on the bay you can find many shops for clinical supplies, who sell equipment which is past its BB Date - so essentially not steril any more.. - I use 0.4mm Syringe needles for these glue jobs...; they fit on most glue bottles and when used carefully, the glue basically runs into the spaces on its own.. - again wonderful work Nik - Greetings to you and my Hometown; Markus

    What causes this? Were the new frets made using a wrong radius?

    • @petrekguitars
      @petrekguitars  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for your question. This can have different causes. I assume that the fret slots were to wide or if the guy who made this glued them in an then by polishing the Frets with a power tool overheat the glue so that it gets loosen and don't hold the fret in there position. A not 100% prebend on the frets would not cause this issue... Best Regards Nik

    • @petrekguitars

      Thanks for your question. Yes you can wipe it of but if you clamp the Radius Jig down it will produce some squeeze out... And I have to remove this anyway... I apply the wax to provide too much glue sticking on the Fretboard. Best Regards Nik

  • @sinistar426
    @sinistar426 9 місяців тому +1

    If you have to re glue down basically every fret, why not just refret the whole board and do it right with a proper fretboard sand, refret, level, and polish? Its a vintage guitar, yet its been refretted already at least once because it has no binding nibs. Seems to me the amount of work being done in this video vs having a total refret done is a no brainer. The ebony board and inlays would be sanded, and you have new frets with plenty of life to them that were crowned, leveled and polished. There could very well be an issue with the last refret as well seeing how many of these frets have lifted. The slots could have been cut too wide hence the lifting, or poor choice of glue used "maybe no glue at all" during the last refret. But how does one know without removing the frets? Im not knocking the work being done, but just saying to avoid future issues, a full re-fret would seem to address any concerns about who did the last refret/why so many frets lifted.

    • @petrekguitars
      @petrekguitars  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for your feedback and for sharing your opinion. Yes you are totally correct. Normally I would do exactly what you recommend. But in this case the owner asked me to fix this issue with less amount of work because the Gutar was refreted 2 years ago and the frets are like new...but there were all loosen. So I decided to chose this way...Best Regards Nik
