Tool holds a special place in my heart. Like hearing this song and Stinkfist take me back to when I was like 15/16 hanging out with one of my best friends just having a great time doing all kinds of stuff. And because that friend died 7 years ago from a heroin overdose it means even more to remember those times. Hearing this song and some others immediately brings me back to those days, having a good time before things eventually took the turn from recreational fun to dangerous life altering shit.

In my mind they’ve carried the torch further than Pink Floyd. I’m not talking about album sales or how long they are on the charts. There’s just more people today than before. The kobe/shaq thing is 100% on point. Jordan and Rodman never liked each other but there was a common respect and communication on the floor that transcended what they thought of each other personally. 8/24 and 32 could have dominated like no other.

Great reaction bro!👍 you get it. I remember seeing an interview with Maynard and the band talking about this song. Maynard said that there was a point in between Ænima and Lateralus where they almost broke up. There was fighting amongst the members. Some felt they were dragging their feet with new material. Then at that time Maynard started A Perfect Circle which seemed like he was distancing himself and focusing on other projects. They admitted that they were close to quitting Tool all together but they stuck with it with open communication and out of the fighting and conflict comes a beautiful and poignant, personal album. “Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion” (such a good fucking line)
Are you sure you remember the interview correctly? I'm not trying to be an ass. It's just that every source I've ever seen has said that the issue at that time was because Tool was in a legal battle with its record label. Then after that, they were in a legal battle with their ex-manager. They weren't able to tour or produce a new CD during all the legal crap, which is why Maynard started A Perfect Circle, and Adam and Danny also started working on side projects. But it wasn't that there was fighting among the members (at least, according to any source I've ever seen).
This is one of those songs that rattles around in your brain forever after hearing it. That rhythm just becomes the new normal with which you hear things.

Like pretty much any tool song, it has multiple meanings, as evidenced by the line “between supposed lovers, between supposed brothers”... unless you’re suggesting the song is about an intimate relationship between siblings.

Hey man, this one of those times where the reaction was really, really on-point and added something to the song! For context, I'm someone who grew up listening to stuff like this on the radio and on mtv (Back when both were good) and would call myself a casual Tool fan, I guess. I've heard this song hundreds of times I would bet, but I've only really engaged with it on the sonic level: that bassline, that double kick ending, the guitar. I appreciate you taking the time to properly go on the journey that the band wants to take you on! Also, that observation about Maynard being frustrated at the end? Sharp.
This song just doesn't get old no matter how many times I hear it. That bass tone is such a constant. The album Lateralus is a masterpiece. Have you seen their videos or do they block them? I like to think the song is speaking about more than a clash between individuals, but more about human nature itself as a species. The two sides could be a war between countries. Tool has always been about the grand scale of things. The album art is by the artist Alex Grey (you should check out his art). His art usually depicts people without flesh, to show how people are alike inside and removing any visual prejudice one may have. Not only does he depict the muscles, veins, and skeletal structure, but the bigger workings of energy like the electrical structure that we resonate on and create from being alive. Deep stuff, which is why is art is synonymous with Tool most of the time. It's ideas they all share. For example the song Lateralus uses the Fibonacci Sequence to construct the song.

For me, it is a toss up between Aenima and Lateralus. I just can't choose which one is the better of the two, because they are both amazing in my opinion!
This has long been one of my favorite Tool songs. I enjoyed your take, and I get you on the Kobe/Shaq reference. I personally look at the world when I hear this song. The idea that the world might once have been better, and that humans were better at working together. But, who knows?

Being in a band is not unlike being in a marriage. There are always disagreements during a creative process, and those can also stall the process. But this song can be relatable to many different types of relationships. The ambiguity as to what kind of relationship about which they are speaking that makes this song so incredible.

This was the first song i fell for , sitting on my porch with a six pack and head phones. on a moon night, 10,000 was recommended by two children in there 30's then.. My son is now 40 and dying of cancer, we always traded 10,000 days with each other , it really is a good memory about every six months we one of us would call the other and ask for it back... xoxo
Exactly my reaction on the look on your face just before that breakdown on the bridge part. Its so easy to get focused and locked in on just about any Tool song. Each one is such a masterpiece I feel.
If you haven't already (and I'm a new viewer so I haven't been through everything you've done yet) you should really do Parabol/Parabola at some point, preferably the music video. Do them both back to back though, because although they are separate tracks and separate names, they are really two parts of the same song.
The Kobe / Shaq dynamic applies too. The lyrics are applicable to any relationship. He's lamenting the loss of communication where it once was. Though there's the thread of hope/optimism for a return: "I know the pieces fit". Never give up on open communication.

Tool is one of my favorite bands. To see them live was on my bucket list. I finally got to check that one off January 31 2020! My birthday!!! The best birthday ever! Words cannot describe the high of being at a Tool show. And I don't drink or do drugs. Music is my high!!!🤘

The timing in this song (and many Tool songs of couse) is insane, you can't just bob your head to it, it takes a while, you hear it more times and learn the different parts of the song. Just blows my mind how tightly it's played though.
I only just started listening to Tool and one of the many joys is finding the correct beat to tap my fingers to. By the time I had the 5/8 7/8 alternating pattern tapped out correctly, they started switching to different time signatures all together. And yet it all sounds so fluent and natural.

As one who is not too into the basketball scene, I can't relate really to the analogy you gave, but I do understand that it makes sense, based on what you've explained and what I've heard elsewhere. My thinking is this, he's referring to our society, human-kind, as a whole. I'm sure that the boys have had their share of problems internally, but they always work it out in the end, because they DO communicate. Failure to communicate leads to breakdowns in all forms of relationships, be it romantic, familial, neighbors, and countries. It's what's wrong with the world today. I stood outside a local record store, waiting for this album, Lateralus, to be released at midnight! I worked not far from the store, so I left work early that night, so I could be near the front of the line. There were so many people there already, waiting, also! There were several other albums being released at midnight, but the majority of us were there for Tool's album. As soon as I got my copy, I hopped in my car, popped the CD in my CD player, and jammed all the way home!

I always love an incredible honest perspective! They’re so pure and true!!! No one truly knows what Maynard meant. Many have speculations, myself included. Interpretation is the definition of art, whether it be visual, auditory, or kinesthetic, and that is beautiful man!
For me personally, this is my favorite Tool album, mostly because when it was released I spent most of my time running around the Atlanta, GA metro in my car picking up and delivering small packages, etc. It was awesome cranking this as high as my stereo could stand it, so much so that I put the CD in and didn't take it out for almost a month! Love it, especially the bass lines (cause I also play the bass)... Peace Out!

Then at that time Maynard started A Perfect Circle which seemed like he was distancing himself and focusing on other projects. Are you sure you remember the interview correctly? I'm not trying to be an ass. It's just that every source I've ever seen has said that the issue at that time was because Tool was in a legal battle with its record label. Then after that, they were in a legal battle with their ex-manager. They weren't able to tour or produce a new CD during all the legal crap, which is why Maynard started A Perfect Circle, and Adam and Danny also started working on side projects. But it wasn't that there was fighting among the members (at least, according to any source I've ever seen).
This is one of those songs that rattles around in your brain forever after hearing it. That rhythm just becomes the new normal with which you hear things.
Maynard didn't lie: he's done the math. He did so much, in fact that he based Lateralus on a numerical sequence.

Apparently it was initially an accident within the music (albeit a lucky one) and, after they reaslized, Maynard decided to include it in the lyrics as well.

Tool's latest album is the best album I've heard in 10+ years (and their first in 13 years because of legal issues, I guess). They haven't missed a beat. Hey man, this one of those times where the reaction was really, really on-point and added something to the song! For context, I'm someone who grew up listening to stuff like this on the radio and on mtv (Back when both were good) and would call myself a casual Tool fan, I guess. I've heard this song hundreds of times I would bet, but I've only really engaged with it on the sonic level: that bassline, that double kick ending, the guitar.
I appreciate you taking the time to properly go on the journey that the band wants to take you on! Also, that observation about Maynard being frustrated at the end? Sharp.
This song just doesn't get old no matter how many times I hear it. That bass tone is such a constant. The album Lateralus is a masterpiece. Have you seen their videos or do they block them? I like to think the song is speaking about more than a clash between individuals, but more about human nature itself as a species. The two sides could be a war between countries. Tool has always been about the grand scale of things. The album art is by the artist Alex Grey (you should check out his art). His art usually depicts people without flesh, to show how people are alike inside and removing any visual prejudice one may have. Not only does he depict the muscles, veins, and skeletal structure, but the bigger workings of energy like the electrical structure that we resonate on and create from being alive. Deep stuff, which is why is art is synonymous with Tool most of the time. It's ideas they all share. For example the song Lateralus uses the Fibonacci Sequence to construct the song.

This has long been one of my favorite Tool songs. I enjoyed your take, and I get you on the Kobe/Shaq reference. I personally look at the world when I hear this song. The idea that the world might once have been better, and that humans were better at working together. But, who knows?

Being in a band is not unlike being in a marriage. There are always disagreements during a creative process, and those can also stall the process. But this song can be relatable to many different types of relationships. The ambiguity as to what kind of relationship about which they are speaking that makes this song so incredible.

It took me years back in my teenage to understand the deepness of this song. It's amazing how quickly you understood it.
What I took away from this song was the he was talking about society in general and in with what you were saying if we all could communicate we would be stronger for it

Tool is one of my favorite bands. To see them live was on my bucket list. I finally got to check that one off January 31 2020! My birthday!!! The best birthday ever! Words cannot describe the high of being at a Tool show. And I don't drink or do drugs. Music is my high!!!🤘

The timing in this song (and many Tool songs of couse) is insane, you can't just bob your head to it, it takes a while, you hear it more times and learn the different parts of the song. Just blows my mind how tightly it's played though.
I only just started listening to Tool and one of the many joys is finding the correct beat to tap my fingers to. By the time I had the 5/8 7/8 alternating pattern tapped out correctly, they started switching to different time signatures all together. And yet it all sounds so fluent and natural.
Oh mano.. the opening gets me every time and I've been listening to this song for nearly 20 years >XD. It's really hard to pick a favorite Tool song, but this was my 1st and it always hits me like a damn train, that much I know.

I played this song over and over when my Dad got sick and going through his death. I know the overall meaning wasn’t about that, but it made since to me at the time.

As one who is not too into the basketball scene, I can't relate really to the analogy you gave, but I do understand that it makes sense, based on what you've explained and what I've heard elsewhere. My thinking is this, he's referring to our society, human-kind, as a whole. I'm sure that the boys have had their share of problems internally, but they always work it out in the end, because they DO communicate. Failure to communicate leads to breakdowns in all forms of relationships, be it romantic, familial, neighbors, and countries. It's what's wrong with the world today. I stood outside a local record store, waiting for this album, Lateralus, to be released at midnight! I worked not far from the store, so I left work early that night, so I could be near the front of the line. There were so many people there already, waiting, also! There were several other albums being released at midnight, but the majority of us were there for Tool's album. As soon as I got my copy, I hopped in my car, popped the CD in my CD player, and jammed all the way home!

Maynard is freaking lyrical genius, hands down , one of THE best writers of all time and a killer voice to accompany that genius brain of his. I always love an incredible honest perspective! They’re so pure and true!!! No one truly knows what Maynard meant. Many have speculations, myself included. Interpretation is the definition of art, whether it be visual, auditory, or kinesthetic, and that is beautiful man!
For me personally, this is my favorite Tool album, mostly because when it was released I spent most of my time running around the Atlanta, GA metro in my car picking up and delivering small packages, etc. It was awesome cranking this as high as my stereo could stand it, so much so that I put the CD in and didn't take it out for almost a month! Love it, especially the bass lines (cause I also play the bass)... Peace Out!
