Agreed. It speaks volumes to their discussion about insecurity when communication is occurring. But when it is not, that is even worse: the lack of compassion.

Also "The circling is worth it, finding beauty in the dissonance" to which I plan on getting the Aenima eye tattooed on my inner forearm with "beauty in the dissonance" quoted with it. Not certain though I'm a puss puss when it comes to pain 😅

My God, I've been hearing this song for twenty years but never really paid that close attention to the lyrics as a whole body. It perfectly sums up the current state of my marriage but gives me...hope. There is so much wisdom in the entire Lateralus album.

The sound in mantra is the sound that Maynard's Siamese cat made while he was squeezing it. He recorded the sound and slowed it down. He said this in an interview with a Japanese journalist. He said that was a special Easter egg just for the Japanese fans.

imo Tool does not have one bad song. Maynard not only reaches so many levels with his lyrics and voice, perfectly complimenting the music touching so well those infinite inner folds of consciousness.

Tool's music is a teacher, a leader, a guide and so much more. They can put you to sleep and wake you up 12 times in 1 song, I'd imagine. Props to the band, cos all the instrumental tracks are done before Maynard hears or adds vocals.

The act of communication is a process of constant learning and growing... the more we try to do it the more we learn from each other about each other and we become closer as a unit... either as a couple, a group or a village, it’s the foundation of all relationships. The less we try the further we fall from the stability of truth and happiness. Much love!!

Great talk on communication. Besides that i want to mention how impressed i am with how hard the two of you work. I dont know where yall get the time or energy. Ive been in such a funk for so long and can barely accomplish the simplest tasks or even leave the house at times. I have to say that recently just seeing your motivation has pushed me to get up off my ass and start dealing with the things ive neglected for so long. I dont even know what provoked me to click on the first vid i watched because normally i have avoided anything to do with religion. Anyway, totally diggin the Lateralus project, cant wait for the Floyd project.

I think this song is more spiritual than that, like talking about the "lost" divine spark within ourselves, a lack of communication between the higher and lower Self.
Only by squaring the circle (common expression in esoteric lore) we can reestablish that lost divine communication.
You guys should watch its official video though, people think it is just a bunch of aleatory weird things but it really shows in a surrealistic way the paralyzation and the uniting of the micro with macrocosm.

This is why you seem to have such a great relationship. Your synergy is off the charts. You both live to communicate, and to you share common goals. It's rare. I deal with broken communication with constant judgement as to what the sender's negative bias is toward me. Therefore, operate on a level of defensive response and quick quips to avoid conflict. The exacting opposite of edifying communication. Rarely do people take criticism without resentment. I know the pieces fit! But time has clouded the path to understanding each other. Clarity is fleeting, a misnomer and effect of brokenness. Reaching for the brass ring that does not want to be found.

  • @kosmosyche
    @kosmosyche 6 років тому +6

Actually... Schism is originally from Ancient Greek σχίσμα (skhisma), so "skism" is the preferred pronounciation, even if both pronounciations are allowed in English (due to the word coming to English through Old French butchered "cisme").

Another superb review. And man do you guys get it. So refreshing to hear fellow humans understand that without conflict, then COMMUNICATION, there is no growth. One of my fav quotes from Maynard:
In general art is that release caused by the friction of life. That is the way I approach music. I look around and see how things are in harmony and look to the things that are out of balance and try to tell that story.
I am drawn to the friction.
A violin is a piece of wood that has been manipulated out of its natural shape and twisted and bent and dried and you take the strings and stretch them across
    very tense
    very stressful
and then you take a bow
that is very straight and tight and you drag it across with the friction and the resulting sound
    that release is the art
    that is the story.

I think pure intention juxtapose is sometimes a scenario where neither person is necessarily wrong, and it's up to both people involved to communicate, and collaborate by trying to see the other's point of view in a way that maybe makes sense for that particular person, and agree to disagree, but understand that everybody is different, and you can work towards a productive understanding rather than shutting each other out and end up making no positive progress.
Whoa, I started out with a simple idea and meant to make it sound much more straightforward!

Healthy communication is such a cliche aspect of healthy relationships, but it is 100% part of the foundation of every relationship. For me communication and trust are two sides of the same coin for any intimate relationship and thankfully they help each other. Good communication builds trust, and trust builds security in having those tough conversations that in turn build even better communication etc. etc. but that is just what I have noticed I may be wrong. I like that you both really pointed out the complexity of for lack of a better term real or true communication, because in my experiences most people have no clue what communication is. They know the word, maybe what the definition is, or how to use it in a sentence but don't know how to actually perform the act of communicating with another person.
Ego, pride, lack of self awareness, ignorance, these all hinder our communication and sadly I think the majority of people in the world would rather sweep all of those things under the rug than address them. I think to have true honest and open communication you have to understand yourself first, both the good and the bad. You have to acknowledge your own short comings and biases or at least recognize that they exist before you can really listen to someone else and hear them out. That is difficult though and absolutely terrifying to a lot of people so they don't go there and when deep conversation and meaningful communication arrives they end up just waiting for their turn to speak. I can count the number of people I would say I love on both hands but the number of people I have met so far in my life that I can truly communicate with that wouldn't fill one. So yeah strong and healthy communication is rare from what I have experienced.
I don't know maybe I have it all wrong but I welcome those tough talks with the people I care about, I want to go there with them because I want to know them, and I really mean them, and I want them to know me. If that means we have to disagree and hash out our differences fine, and if that means I have to hear about my flaws from someone I care about and risk the pain that might cause me then so be it because that is the only way I will learn and grow as a person so that I can treat them the way they deserve and vice versa. Nobody is perfect and the first step to fixing anything is finding the problem, so if I never get told of the damage I may be causing through my actions it could break things beyond repair and that scares me a hell of a lot more than having my ego or pride hurt does. Unfortunately that seems to be a very unpopular and misunderstood mindset.
Sorry for the super long comment but I felt like sharing, Tool has been my favorite band since I was 9 years old and first heard Sober and this is why. Great inspiring music with wisdom and meaning that can spark some of the most interesting conversations imaginable, and got me through the toughest of times as well. Great video and thank you if you read this far lol.

A juxtaposition is a combination/overlay. So the line "pure intentions juxtaposed..." refers to the beginning of a relationship. The two partners have pure intentions in going forward with their relationship but as the relationship progresses, it begins to "disintergrate" as communication starts to break down.

Musically this is one of my favorite if not favorite songs on the album and aside from 46 and 2 probably my favorite Tool song period.
The way this song builds upon itself mirrors the idea of building communication. But at the very end of the song it all starts to crumble and Maynard's frustration comes out "I KNOW the pieces fit!". Its a masterpiece of songwriting. No one ends songs like Tool does, and this is one of the best examples. Also the constant time signature shifts and overall strange time signatures is a really unique thing. I've heard that its tied to the Sequence but I'm not certain if thats the case.
Lyrically you guys brought up so much interesting stuff. But I'll try to keep this from getting to long. I think right now we have almost reached a point of informational civil war. You look online and see the absolute relenteless vitriol being spewed between the left and right wing. Its not a civil war in the sense of what we have in our past but its just as damaging to this country and this war is being fought on news media comment sections and vlogs all around the internet and Vin is right, it is really really bad the state we find ourselves in right now.
I think its absolutely possible to have a deep online relationship. I know people who have it. But its also very unlikely and thats because its rare for people to be who they really are online. .There is always a...schism... between reality and online. It is true that seeing someone in person helps, better still if they are right next to you. But that is because humans process body language on a level that is beyond what most people can even comprehend. I've been in sales for a good bit of my adult life and one of the most profound things I learned is that people pick up more from your body language than sometimes even the words you say. Its that important. At the end of the day we (as a world) would be in a far better state if we could just communicate with each other. Its not gong to solve every problem, but it certainly would solve some of them. How do I know? Because I know the pieces fit....

Seen Tool at a music festival one year and the crowd set fires on the lawn. Three big ones were set, people were burning anything they could find and dancing around them. The biggest one Security couldn't get to, do to the circle pit..🐜

"Juxtaposition" has no good or bad inference. It is a condition where two lines (parallel or not) cross at one point or several (as in a wave) Yes. Lines running parallel can cross. Also, obviously, two opposing parabolas can find themselves meeting at an aperture. "Lateralus" is quite the dive into the mathematical thinking behind human interaction.

You’ve done well to to dissect the lyrics. But I want to add that lateralus can be assumed to be the plural of lateral (which is the opposite of linear) embrace that fact. embrace the abstract, the unknown is the largest thing in the universe.

Yes It's Me Again! Still waiting for THIRD EYE! HOWEVER!! This message specifically for VIN! YOU ARE AWESOME. Your knowledge of the world AND your philosophical perspective blows me away! Don't always agree with you BUT that's OK! Your intellectual and spiritual perspective is something that most folks in today's society lacks!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!

As a bass player, this track makes me very happy. I have to be honest, I listened to Tool for years and rarely went into depth with the lyrics, because the rhythm section is so great. It's been interesting to actually hearken to what Maynard is talking about. Often, it isn't what I thought it was.

Mantra, where Maynard plays his cat.
Actually there are three accepted pronunciations: Skizz-m, sizz-m, or shizz-m (rare). However the Oxford English Dictionary lists the pronunciation skizz-m first, so it's the more commonly accepted one.
This is interesting, since the OED often advocates sch- to be pronounced sh- (see British pron. of 'schedule'), but in this case, the sk sound pronunciation is considered the more common usage.

Hey Vin and Sori, y'all need to react to some Sabaton. I think y'all will like them. They are power metal, which is an amazing genre of music. A great first song by them would be The Final Solution, Panzerkampf, or The Last Stand (which is about the Swiss Guard that allowed to Pope to escape when mercenaries attacked the Vaticanin 1527, the mercenaries are numbered to be about 20000 strong against some militia and 189 Swiss Guardsmen, they held and died on the steps of the Vatican). Their songs are based on historical battles and people, mainly from World War II.

What's awesome is that Maynard wrote these lyrics in regards to the bank try to write this album due to the legal battles with thier label, and all the time it took. Maynard also started A Perfect Circle while waiting for the legal battles to end due to his inability to wait. He had so much creativity he couldn't sit by and wait to let it out. I love y'all's videos, you two do great together!! Thank you for all your videos 😀

    Hey Vin
i'm at 21 minutes of reaction. I just wanted to say before I forgot it.
    Schism with a k
    schism
    ˈs(k)izəm/
    noun
a split or division between strongly opposed sections or parties, caused by differences in opinion or belief.
synonyms:division, split, rift, breach, rupture, break, separation, severance; More
the formal separation of a church into two churches or the secession of a group owing to doctrinal and other differences.
you may remember the conversation me and a guy had on the Facebook page.
we had a back-and-forth discussion of our differences in our opinions and he suddenly start using his image I'm a soldier an
this happened. he immediately called the person and islamist extremist.
I found it odd to call someone defending their Homeland from an Invader an extremist. there I found the impure nature of his heart felt self-proclaimed patriotism. then he said what i was saying was mindless.
needless to say we reached the fork in the road(schism) after 3 or 4 comments each.
    going to finish watching reaction

So based on how this vid is being reviewed, I can't help but question the percieved intent or tone of the conversation you mentioned. Not to kick a dead horse, I would like to say that I have a way of being condescending that usually has to be pointed out before I know I'm doing it. So I appologize for coming off as attacking, if that in case is how it was percieved. I wanted to point out a different perspective from a person who was there and didn't simply recieve the reality from a news anchor's slanted account. There are many misconceptions and inaccuracies I would like to clarify, surrounding the entirety of the decade plus we (the United States) spent in the middle east. Anyway I was defensive and I appologize again for any offense intended or percieved.

Schism is about the relation between the spirit and body (or rational mind). The communication between mind and spirit or soul it's broken when you don't listen beyond the ears, you know what I mean. The materialism rules our lives, that's why we don't communicate with our spirit.
    (Sorry for my poor english)
