    • @Hoshimaru57

      Northern Snowbird very good, people tend to get that wrong. Just like everyone screws up what the 7 deadly sins are, and claim that Jesus said God hates gays. He doesn’t. One of the disciples says it’s a sin along with about 30 other things, half of which most of us do every day.
      And the actual passage that coins the term is Proverbs 6:16-19 “The are six things God hates, seven which are an abomination to Him: A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that she’d innocent blood, a heart that creates wicked schemes, feet swift to create mischief, false witness, and those who sow discord among brothers.”
      But none of this is gonna matter because UA-cam is probably gonna remove this comment even though it’s educational because it’s controversial.

    If you had been alive when the Genesis version was created I'm sure you would see things differently. The puppets in the Genesis version showed all the players in the crazy world we had just before the end of the cold war. Old or not, the Genesis version gets the point across very well for those of us alive at the time.

    With the Genesis version, it was a time where we were constantly on the brink of nuclear annihilation, so the humor was applied to make it palatable at the time.
    Disturbed being a metal band had to come at it with a harder edge just on G.P. Plus it had to bring the song forward by 20 + years so the audience would appreciate it.
    Sonically speaking both versions stand upon their own merit, regardless of which version the listener prefers. The bottom line is that it's a great song with a timeless message, as it can be applied in many different ways. For, me there is no "better version", the version that I would prefer to listen to depends solely upon my mood at the time.
    P.S. Massive props for anticipating the want of reaction to both versions!

    • @hildajensen6263
      @hildajensen6263 4 роки тому +8

      Well said. I'm old enough to remember that fear of the nuclear annihilation. And when people talked about it, they never used the word IF, but always WHEN.
      So Genesis when headlong into the subject, but also wanted to relieve some of the stress though humour. - There were already plenty of young people fighting in the streets, robbing and vandalizing banks in protests against capitalism in those years. They didn't exactly make the world a better place to live in.
      Disturbed goes the other way, and want to awaken defiance in their audience. Which also has its time and place.

      Indeed. The threat of nuclear annihilation may be bit further away but different threats have arrived. In countries like Libya, Somalia, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan they have largely materialised, people and things blasted up ruthlessly to seize in power and natural resources, masked to the veil of religion and "freedom".

    “The LOVE of money is the root of all evil” , is the actual quote. Many people get this wrong.

    • @John_Whitworth
      @John_Whitworth 4 роки тому +4

      Close but actually it is 1 Timothy 6:10 and says, "For the love of money is A root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs (NASB)". It's an often misquoted scripture that affects the message.

    • @LongandWeirdName
      @LongandWeirdName 4 роки тому +2

      @@John_Whitworth ῥίζα γὰρ πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἐστὶν ἡ φιλαργυρία. Note that the ῥίζα has no defining article. That being the case, it isn't a root. It is THE root. The source. Not one of the sources. Also... πάντων τῶν κακῶν. There is argument among scholars of Greek if that phrase is meant to be all different kids of or every kind of, without exception. As this is in conversation between Paul and Timothy and as proverbs are supposed to be exaggerated and simplified/overgeneralized, I'd go with the second version.
      Thus, "The love of money is The root of All evil" is actually a better translation. At least in my eyes.

    I didn't comment on your Genesis reaction because i wanted to see your reaction. However, i'm an Army vet. The song that convinced me to join was the original Genesis Land of Confusion. This version is much more militant. What really got me were the lyrics, "These are the hands we're given. Use them and let's start trying. To make this a place worth living in." So I joined the military, after my training and on the way to my first duty station, I met my wife. This was in 2007. Here we are in 2020, I'm still married to my wife, we have 3 kids. I used my hands to help build a world in a place worth living in. I'm no longer in the military, now I work in tech. I help the world in this trying time to be able to work from home.

    The Genesis version was definitely a product of the times - the Cold War and threat of Nuclear annihilation were often dealt with using a dark humor. There were so many topical references in the Genesis video, it's hard for someone not from the time to get them. That said. LOVED the way Disturbed took the message and updated it. It shows the strength of Mike Rutherford's lyrics that it remains completely relevant. These are times we live in.

    The Genesis video was made during the cold war where there was the very real possibility of the world being annihilated in a nuclear war. The people who made it were a group who did a series called "Spitting image" which was political satire. If you know how Spitting image stylises the puppets you would be able to recognise a lot of the characters in that video were world leaders and dictators from that era.
    The Disturbed one makes it more about fighting against the big powers that oppress people in general rather than the risk of nuclear annihilation.

    I am surprised that people haven't pointed out the all important change in the lyrics. It's in the "I remember, long ago" section. The lyrics "and the sound of your laughter" become "in the wake of this madness". The innocence of laughing becomes the ruins of the aftermath. Holding someone smiling and laughing versus holding someone, consoling them in the destroyed rubble. Such a small difference, but a powerful image shift.

    Did you know that every single puppet from the original Genesis video was based on real people alive at that time (politicians, world leaders, celebrities and the band themselves - including Phil Collins). I agree the harder edge and professional illustration/ animation of Disturbed's video makes the song alittle more entertaining and have more punch . New reaction request: Lenny Kravitz - "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over", "Let Love Rule", "Believe", "Fly Away", "Always On the Run" and "Rock and Roll Is Dead". I think you'll dig him.
