Teen: 'old people are lame' Danny: 'hold my beer..' 58 yrs young and still the top dog.. age ain't even a number when it comes to the godlike genius that is Danny Carey
Hell, Louis Bellson and Joe Morello in their 80s could play circles around .most drummers in their 20s. I hope ol' Danny sticks around long enough to do the same.
A legendary skilled musician like Danny Carey is the result of a kid, gifted beeing born with natural talent, started to play the drums and kept on practicing with inhuman discipline and never stopped mastering new things and searching for the next level.... for around 40 years straight... haha, you will get depressive trying to reach his level because it might be impossible. You have talent? Danny aswell and you can't compensate 40 years of practice and expirience.
He's on the Mt Rushmore of drummers. We can argue the other 3 but there isn't an argument that he shouldn't be up there in my opinion. One of the greatest ever
Something about Danny Carey's drumming that really sets it apart is his mastery of dynamics. A lot of drummers will be like, "Well, I'm in a metal band, so I'm just going to hammer away at my set as hard as I can the whole time," but Danny Carey plays soft, hard, and everywhere in between. A lot of people focus on how he can play different time signatures with each limb--which is really cool, to be sure--but they miss his dynamics and how he also can do that with each limb, independently. He'll be playing a soft rhythm on the hi-hat with his left foot, pounding a bass drum with his right foot, smashing away at cymbals and toms with his right hand, and playing a rhythm that varies from gentle to heavy with his left hand. That is VERY hard. You are not going to find a lot of drummers who can consistently play hard with one limb and soft with another at the exact same time, much less while playing material as complicated as Tool's.
I couldn't agree more! Also note how he turns his stick around for playing rimshots during the interlude. It's all those small nuances and dynamic changes that make him the best imo.
He listens to Indian and African drummers man. That's what sets him apart from the others. That tribal percussion comes from deep tribal rythyms, Cuban, African and Indian, you recognise them instantly if you know these sounds... That's not to say that he isn't in a league of his own, but you can tell he appreciates those deep trance like rythyms that don't obey your regular western time signarures. Igor Cavalera incorporated Brazilian rythyms into sepulturas sound and it did a similar thing in setting them apart from other bands at the time. I'm still in awe, as we all are, of how he manages to bring it all together 🥴.
There are other drummers out there who can do these intricate triple polyrhythms, but Danny is the only one with this ability thats writing platinum records.
He literally has a phd in percussion. He also studies sacred geometry. So, he understands that a 21/4 time signature can be played over a 6/8 if done just right.

I love where you can see Maynard to the side watching Danny go off. Must be similar to being a teammate of Jordan back in the day. Such a treat. Hoping they (Vic Firth) release more of these in the future.
I've always loved that Maynard doesnt, and never has hogged the spotlight, he sings off in the rear in shadow usually on stage and lets the band get the spotlights for the music. They are a band that has always stayed away from celebritard nonsense. They stand on the quality of the work. Gotta respect that.

Wow! I get easily bored with over-indulgent drum solos. This was fascinating to watch! He plays with such intelligence (not to mention insane skill) but so tasteful and precise. Really a wonderful thing to watch.
If you have seen Buddy Rich's Impossible Solo you would know that isn't true. There's a reason all drummers, including Peart and Carey, look up to him. ua-cam.com/video/9esWG6A6g-k/v-deo.html But Danny is among the greatest to have ever played, no question.

I love playing this song. It is a hard song to play. Surprisingly, the solo you hear, and many other elements of Danny's part in Tools music, uses somewhat common polyrhythms as a baseline for the "drive" in the track. The hands are really the easy part in the solo, it is the kicks in the beginning that make it weird. They're very soft but they're there. In drumline, we would play an exercise that was called "double-triple", and it would excercise your wrist and finger control, it is essentially a swiss army triplet, but take one hand away, and there you go, you'll have the baseline for Pneuma, many sections of 7empest, Rosetta Stoned, and much more. By doing this, as long as he can maintain that ONE baseline rudiment, he can really do whatever he wants while he solos. You see this as well in Rosetta Stoned, about 6 minutes in, he actually starts playing swiss army triplets, but the left hand is ghosted. Check out Johnkew's Rosetta Stoned isolated track for reference to this, because it's hard to hear in the music itself. My point here, is that Danny's a genius for using swiss army triplets as a baseline for the polyrythyms. Its 6/8, but you can easily turn this into 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, it's pretty much math at that point. He uses simple principles but using it on different appendages is hard. I always say its one thing to practice drumming, but it's entirely different to perform it. I've practiced songs for months only to go to a recording and get absolute anxiety just from the pressure of a camera or a microphone. It's a different pressure going in front of a crowd. This is why building a song that functions is really important here. Also one more thing, notice how near the end of the solo, danny holds back a little bit. This is because back in the day he used to get a bit emotional during a solo (a lot of drummers do it, myself included, and get too carried away with a part of a song or a solo), you can see this in old videos of him playing Rosetta stoned, where he would sometimes add extra notes into the end of the solo, which would culminate into him missing an important hit. He would usually notice this after he would do it, but in the live track here, he pulls back before it happens. If you wonder why I have referenced Rosetta stoned so much, it took me about 2 years to learn the track, I used old festival videos, drum interviews, head cams, and johnkews drum videos helped me a lot. I wanted to learn the song because it's difficult. I've been learning 7empest now. Danny is my favorite drummer, he is the mitochondria of the band lol
Totally worth noting that Danny Carey is the oldest member of Tool at 58yrs old. This man is truly an all-time great 🔥

Danny is my favorite drummer by far ....he is the man !!!!
Danny has set a new standard for drummer's all over the world. INCREDIBLE.
Read the comments on that video 😆.
This is such a good quality recording for a live performance.
