Therapist reacts to Schism by Tool
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 бер 2024
- Therapist analyzes the lyrics of Schism by Tool to discuss the ways in which conflict can negatively impact a relationship. Tool describes how often during a conflict there is inherent disconnection and that can cause people to blame the other person and forget the end goal which is connection. Tool asks us to use the passion that ignited the relationship to create intense compassion while we go through moments of conflict.

The song is really about 2 guys that are trying to put together furniture from Ikea
Noooo 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Underrated comment!
This is true. They were both shrooming and couldn’t figure it out.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I KNOW THE PIECES FIT!
As a Tool fan, I’d advise you not to watch the videos on the first listen. It distracts you from the music, which drives the listener's emotions.
I’m starting to think reactors can’t win no matter what they do. If they do the official video, you all say they should have done the live video. If they do the live video, you all say they should have done the lyric video. If they do the lyric video, you all say they should have done the official video. No matter what they choose, SOMEONE will inevitably tell them they chose wrong. And it’s every video on every channel at this point.
@@ninja_tonyDon't think so. Most people advice to do a lyric or audio only.
@@ninja_tonyWell, yeah. Of course. Fans aren't one entity. They're many people with many opinions. It's not like we can all come together as a fanbase and come to one solid opinion on the matter. And people are gonna voice their opinions.
Absolutely
It doesnt matter. Its not about her analysis of the music its about the pychology of it
..."cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion between supposed lovers"...
...perfection...
Was hoping she wouldn’t cut it before the “between supposed lovers” but it got left out :(
"atrophy" I'm used to that word only in the context of muscles. but compassion is a mental muscle. so that fits.
What a lyric!! MJK is the Goat
welcome to Tool. have a great experience
@@karowolkenschaufler7659 As a kid, this song is how I learned the word...but my ears heard a-trophy lol
Lateralus is a timeless masterpiece. Hundreds of years from now people will still listen to this album in awe.
Beethoven. ... The wyld stallions
going back to asia feelings
Converge's Jane Doe is a masterpiece. Lateralus is just... pretty good.
@@murrothbro195 worst take of all time
@@Aftermost3590 Well when comparing albums that high school boys tend to be convinced are the best thing since the Sistine Chapel - Jane Doe comes out ahead. Tool (and their fans) take themselves far more seriously than they have any right to.
I guess I'm just trolling now but I do believe that.
If you're going down the Tool rabbit hole, I would like to suggest 46 & 2. The song is full of Jungian terminology, and is about personal growth. It's a song that has helped me profoundly over the years.
I completely agree! It has helped me so much over the years.
Such a good song!!!!
Its about the Jung's theory of human evolution, chromosomes!!.
The next step
not sure if it helped me, but damn i loved knowing more about Jung thanks to that song
perhaps a japanese joke of somekind perhaps?
You can literally see the moment she went from being uncomfortable, to understanding. Beautiful.
Yeah I wasn’t sure it was working for her then all of a sudden wham… her smile!
I cant tell you how much listening to Tool has bettered me as a person, in any relationship.
Couldn’t agree more.
Psychedelic mushrooms bettered me as a person.
Both 💯
You know Maynard thinks Butt jokes are funny??🤘😂

One of my favourite parts is the way that the song's arrangement reinforces the lyrics' message. The song starts in 5/4, then spends most of the remainder alternating between 5/8, 6/8 and 7/8, which are all "uneven"-sounding time signatures, reinforcing the messages of disconnection and disjointedness in the lyrics. And then, right at the end, it shifts back to the much more stable-sounding 8/8...while Maynard repeats "I know the pieces fit". Genius.
Very true, the whole damn band is full of musical, mental and emotional geniuses and i feel blessed and honored to have seen them numerous times in large and intimate venues. They are life shaking live.
They write the lyrics after the music in tool so no surprise they play with the lyrics to suit the time signatures at times in tool.
underrated comment.
Tool is a band that I feel genuinely has healed parts of myself that I didn't even know where injured.
I've been a Tool fan since the late 90's, but as a 39 year old married woman, you just gave this awesome song so much more context. My husband and I are til death do we part soulmates but of course difficulties arise throughout the marriage. No infidelity, drug use is in our past, but just trying to make our family and small business work has brought new stressors into our life. Thank you for giving me a new perspective on a song I always loved for as long as I've loved my husband.
Same here, every married couple have these problems in the long run. Keep your mind cool, be open minded and invest in each other in a positive way. We have 2 children, are married 8 years and 18 years together. We will get there, it doesnt suit us to give up.
"The Grudge" or "Right in Two" would make great reactions, both containing universal truths about the human condition.
plus one for right in two. lyrically absolutely amazing
Right in two is a masterpiece it takes you on a sonic journey you are profoundly changed at the end a great song
Not to mention the album as a whole relates directly to the tree of life in kabbalah
I never comment on videos. But Right in Two is my favorite song. I've listened to it most days since it came out. I'd love to see that video
@@jacobkrause Yeah, they say that your favorite Tool song is the one you're listening to, but Right in Two really connects for me :)
To make a therapist give credit and try to understand Maynard's poetic lyricism shows how great is Tool. Makes my heart tickle,
The drummer for tool is one of the best 5 ever
As a huge Tool fan, it brings me great happiness to watch a new Tool fan being born 🤗
It's not just about "a" relationship, it's humanity as a whole. We've separated from ourselves and thus each other. Humanity as forgotten we're all just here trying...and failing...and not stopping to talk and hear each other and pick the other up, whomever that other is. Passion has become violence in it's action...in the name of...fill in the blank. We don't share it freely, we preach it, and that's very different.
Tool is therapy
As an OG Tool fan from 93, I love watching reaction videos of people experiencing Tool for the first time. Living vicariously through them as they become, true Tool fans!! I love that you are sharing with us, your journey as you descend deeper into their discography. Nobody, in my own opinion, has broke the lyrics down, the way you do. Tool can be tricky with their lyrics, some people may think it means one thing, but yet can't seem to nail it, quite like you do. Keep the Tool reactions coming!!
I see what you did there we all like to live vicariously ;)
Sorry bro you're not OGT unless you go back to 92, from the first EP
missed it by a year…. shame. i’ve heard others go back a bit further
@@danielburr982 I heard of them in 92, but didn't become a fan till 93. So I can't say I'm an OG from 92.
@@chrisc.172 yeah but I didn't have vans a dope Beastie tee or nipple rings or a new tattoo, and it wasn't the first EP
I love how each verse ends with the word "communication"
We all need to rediscover communication a little bit better don’t we? Maynard was simply trying to reinforce and drive the thought process home.
I really love the line about "Finding beauty in the dissonance" even conflict can be beautiful when you have the tools to keep your compassion.
Is it me or does the music become less dissonant itself as the song progresses? I don’t think I’ve heard anyone mention it, yet.
Do you have any advice for keeping compassion?
@danielcarter94 I guess it depends on weather you mean the musical notes or the harmonious nature of the lyrics
@@bloodblitzowns11 A mindset of "winning" an argument is the antithesis of compassion. When I have a conflict with my partner the first thing I do is give up trying to convince them I am "right." Instead {if they are stable enough) I ask without any sarcasm to explain what they are feeling and thinking, then repeat it as best I can in my own words. Once they agree I understand often the conflict is over. When it is not they ASK me to explain my side - reciprocation. This will only work if both of you truly still care about each other. The are other techniques but being mindful of your own emotional state and learning listen to it in a way that allows you to calm down is at the heart of all of that.
@@XathexX this was actually beautiful, thank you
The Grudge by Tool, would be awesome if you analyzed it. That song literally broke me down to tears as I realized what I had been holding onto for years has been pulling me down into the depths of despair. Plus he lets out a scream for like 40 seconds.
agree the grudge would be a great reaction
Love the Grudge
Could not agree more
I think she would really appreciate The Grudge.
Absolutely should be reviewed next. What a song to EXPERIENCE!👍🤘🌀
As a therapist, you should absolutely go down the Aenima rabbit hole. Their most impressive album; I will stand by that.
Congratulations, you are now full immersed in the Tool experience
Just wait till she hears Parabol & Parabola 😏
She actually dissected the songs message so well, all of that on the first listen, great job!
I started this video rolling my eyes and finished it completely shifted. Thank you for this. Your take on all of this is so great. I feel in love with Tool as a kid and only saw/identified with the pain in the music then. Now, I see that it's a doorway to step through in the healing process. Wow. It only took like 30 years to figure out!
Love this
This song, along with other Tool songs, kinda wrecked me emotionally after my first break up. I didn't know anything about connecting with other people since I was 17, didn't realize I was autistic, and feeling things at levels I had never felt before. Tool simultaneously destroyed and saved me.
Sometimes the only way we can be saved is when our ego is destroyed. I'm glad you had tool to help guide you and this makes me smile at their name. We really can use their music as a tool to guide and teach us through tough times
That opening bass riff is one of the best in the history of the genre in my opinion. If you close your eyes and listen to it, it's just as much a math equation as it is music. Brilliance rarely emerges from a stable mind.
These guys are on another level and can't be touched 💯🔥
Spiral out
Keep going 💛
You should do the whole discography. They are all phenomenal
I usually don't like watching people react to Tool music videos because they are usually to distracted by the video to really hear the song but i really enjoyed your reaction and appreciate that you sent so much time on the lyrics. Tool has great lyrics to analyze. Just subscribed and hope to hear more Tool from you. Thank you.
Tool has been 1 of my favorite bands for 30 years now. Their music has been a comfort to me for so long!❤
The song is about a relationship being ruined beyond repair due to poor or no constructive communication, and attempts at it either go nowhere or make it worse. It's a song of desperation and despair
"What is this?"
The best thing your ears will ever receive.
Two of the greatest experiences in my life; discovering Tool, and finally going to rehab/therapy.
I am SO PUMPED for the rest of your Tool journey. “Wings for Marie” “Right in Two” and “Vicarious” would be my next picks!
14 years clean here, congratulations on your recovery. Stay the course my friend, it can be done ❤️
This is one of my favorite Tool songs. I usually do not analyze the words and the meaning of it, so you digging in deep to the meaning of the song is fascinating.
Thank you.
This piece is really SUPERIOR, musically, philosophically, lyrically...and visually, too❤✌ ...well, like many of them .. 😜
Crazy that this song is almost 20 years old.
This album has literally been a life changer for me. This might be the best reaction to this song that I’ve seen. Even though you watched the video on the first listen. It’s awesome seeing the lyrics being so appreciated.
Tool is way deeper than most folks realize. Truthfully a beautiful band in total.
Great reaction
Maynard will be proud 😀
Tool and a bon fire are a giant part of my therapy
It would be very interesting to hear your analysis of TOOL's songs Wings for Marie (Pt1) and 10,000 days (Wings Pt2).
Yes !!
This song has a deep place in my heart. The "cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion" line and "i know the pieces fit" always hit me really hard.
Amazing review video, and one of my favourite songs ever. This made me think more about the meaning, and I had goosebumps multiple times. You are doing some real higher power work here and I applaud it 🎉
Seeing your video pop up in my suggestions, I was initially skeptical. Admittedly, the thumbnail had me thinking you'd be dismissive of the subject matter. But after a few minutes in, I was absolutely stunned. You broke down an amzing song (that I've enjoyed for over a decade) in an exceptionally enlightening way, instead of a cold and clinical manner; in a way I'd never considered, but wished I always had. You've taught me so much in such a short span of time, and I cannot thank you enough. You have yourself a new subscriber. Cheers!
Therapist...you tell it like it is and a heartfelt reaction from you! Thanks for the show.
The song is absolutely about relationships and conflict but also about repairing and rebuilding off the existing foundations of those relationships. The song, if I recall correctly, was written about the conflict that existed within the band at that time that was preventing them from writing new music and touring.
yes, but also it's definitely about 2 guys trying to put together a furniture set from Ikea on the weekend
@@Requiem4aDr3Am lmfao! This is the best reply ever haha! That made my morning.

"we have a problem in our group relationship that keeps us from writing songs... let's write a song about that."
bloody brilliant.
Never knew I needed a Therapist’s breakdown of this. You confirm the poetic genius that I believed was there but was just beyond my understanding. Thank You. PLEASE do The Pot by Tool.
I love how people hear Tool for the first time and almost with certainty they proceed to be blown the F away. Tool isn’t just music, tool is an experience. Looks like she is going to be another soldier in the Tool army!
Your five best songs are fixing to be all TOOL songs, and you're gonna need a bigger number.
She was always a Tool fan she just didn't know it 🤙
Please do more TOOL!!! ALL of their songs are so good and such a good TOOL to use for any issues you’re going through!
Your doing such a great job, thanks for review all of those songs
I cannot love this type of content more! Thank you for what you are doing❤
Tool is the most incredible sonic and lyrical journey you'll ever experience!!
Adam Jones, the guitarist, does the videos. He has done special effects for movies like Jurassic Park and Terminator. Creepy, indeed, but creative af.
Wow this an amazing breakdown for new listen to Tool to take this much away so quickly! I love to hear your breakdown to their Song Pushit, live vision or studio. I think you are going to gain some wisdom from almost everyone of their songs.
Tool music has been some.of the best therapy I have received over the last 3 decades.
"We often hear with our pain" is such an important takeaway for me. My husband and I dont really "fight" (we aren't the type to yell or god forbid be physical), but we do often get fussy with eachother because one or both of us don't communicate what we need properly (like asking, "do you need to vent or do you need advice?"). We're working on it! I know the pieces fit 🖤
Tool is always like a therapy session!
The whole Lateralus album is an absolute journey. If I hit a point in life where my anxiety and stress levels push me to the brink, I listen to that album and it brings me down from the emotional ledge. I can't recommend the whole album enough. And then the art of Alex Grey (does the art/album covers for TOOL) is also fun for the mind.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was Adam Jones, the band's guitarist.
@@laurabuer4714 Alex Jones also does special effects and stop motion. I bet they collaborate on the album covers.
Thank you for your reaction
I love your insight ❤️ would be honored to witness you experience more tool
We fought every day with intense passion with my beloved wife....We couldn't stop....years later I now realize we fought so we could be closer - to connect even more deeply. I still love her so much. WE just couldn't find another way to touch each other.
Nice. I don't know a ton of Tool. This is a great song, though. The Bassline is iconic.
I was hoping you would do more tool. Nice.
Man, I love when folks listen to Schism and actually pick up on the (pretty obvious, it literally says it) setting and meaning. And the lyrics are some of IMO the best by Tool....so poetic but so hard-hitting and meaningful. Perfect song for a therapist to react to!
What i like about this song is that not only can it be in regards to relationships, but it can also encompass spirituality or just the sense of self.
Really enjoying these videos. Stinkfist is a great one for this style of analysis. Deals with our constant need for more stimulation.
I agree I have struggled with addiction for years, Stinkfist helped me recognize my triggers
Plus it’s also about fisting, because Maynard is a little bit clever that way.
❤ your analysis! Any song on the Lateralus album you're going to be blown away by the wisdom of the lyrics.
PS Yes Tool videos are too distracting lol
I love this song. I have watched many reaction videos but this one is probably the one I actually enjoyed. She is so in tune with recognizing the meaning of the lyrics. Great job.
So well said, I know I've said it in other ways before, but I just absolutely love you Taylor. Thank you so much for all that you've done for my taste in music.
Baked potatoes don't sprout. They're baked. Just saying.
Definitely
What a fantastic breakdown. Love your channel!
Yeeees girl! Speak truth! Everything you said were so relevant and well interpreted
This is why tool is top shelf maynard really be giving wisdom that can not only be seen thru different lenses but it resonates with individual situations of the listeners its a really special thing
A song from this album called The Patient helped me see a clearer picture of my depression and obsessive worrying and panic. The lyrics “I must keep reminding myself of this” was my anthem, it was my OCD telling me I needed/had to worry… but that line also stood for the coping work I had to practice relentlessly to break the cycle of thinking. It’s hard to explain. This album came out about a year after my symptoms really came on. And I honestly credit it with helping to save my life. Almost the entire album is like this. It’s been 24 years since my symptoms started. I’m stable, healthy, married with two astounding children. I give God credit for all good things. But these guys and they’re music have given my emotions a voice since I was 13 years old. ❤️
Tool is not just a music it is a message. Love it 💛🖐️
I love your words. And I love your analysis and interpretation of this. Thank you for your insight.
I cant believe you are reacting to Tool my favorite band of all time and Ren my favorite musican on earth right now. So its safe to say im really digging your content!!! Thank You..
Loved this review… I actually sent an ex the lyrics to this song about a decade ago because I felt it was what we were going through (she didn’t get it) but thanks for reinforcing that ideal about this song.. TOOL is usually open for all kinds of interpretations, and meant to be a TOOL for your own journey, take it how u will/no right or wrong interpretation, but you nailed it
Genuinely watching you enjoy this made me really happy in a weird way.
Im glad all it took was therapist to reread great lyrics for me to understand that the lyrics are amazing. Thank you for a therapists approval! Go America
Wow, what a great breakdown and walk through to this song. I've been listening to Tool for 20 years, and you described it beautifully. Bravo, and thank you. 👏 🤘 I would love to see your take on more metal videos.
Your insight is incredible, beautiful reaction and analysis! Subscribed!❤
There is no compassion in shame. Fear is the only reminder, and love seems to be a disillusion.
First time viewer. tbh i have never focused on the lyrics in the hundred + times ive heard this, you really opened my eyes there. Thankyou
I have been diving down this tool rabbit hole with you since last night and I love it!!!! This has been fun and so thought provoking.
Yea he writes some good lyrics. They're one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Total perfection on stage.
Well, it will be interesting to see how far down the rabbit hole you go with this. Plenty of material that makes a message in a musical format that some people immediately dismiss. Tool fans love watching people break things down and understand what we have listened to for decades.
Wonderful reaction and analysis, keep 'am coming
Thanx TOOL
In our journey together, I've come to see our communication as a graceful pendulum swing, embodying reciprocity, empathy, and balance. Your active listening and self-awareness foster mutual understanding, respect, and profound growth between music & those who listen
I love blasting tool songs LOUD as possible. Even while driving. Sorry not sorry lol. Everyone needs to listen to TOOL!
This will be a long one, so y'all have been warned! 'Schism' was the first Tool song I ever heard, it got me hooked, and I've been listening to them for 23 years. They are my favorite band, and true to the song, there have been two events in my life where there was a schism, but the pieces have since been brought back together. All long-lasting relationships are hard at times, and figuring out how to maintain them can also be difficult.
@heartsupport, you should also know you are the first ever UA-cam channel I've subscribed to! Haha, yes I am very old school, but I'm finally jumping on the UA-cam band wagon.
I absolutely LOVE what you're doing. So far I've watched your Tool and Nothing More reaction videos, and they are both bands who's music has helped me immensely getting through some of the hardest times in my life. Please do more from those two bands!
In addition: SHINEDOWN. Their entire platform is mental health, and they are just fantastic! There's a reason they hold the record for the most #1 hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart. Also, Three Days Grace (more so 'Explosions'; there's definitely a thread of grief going through that album). I will be watching more when I have time!
I really appreciate, and enjoy, your analysis of songs. Very moving
ive listened to this song probably hundreds of times and never had any idea what it meant until now. Wow you really put the pieces together for me.
This is the most amazing interpretation of this song. All I wanted was for my ex wife to listen to this song to help her understand my perspective on our relationship and lack of communication. She just thought TOOL was demonic and wouldn't let me listen to them for or 12 year relationship. This song is so profound and beautifully written. I just wish she could have heard it and listened with an open heart and mind. Thank you for recognizing this song for all its beauty and power
I love Tool with all my heart . Thank you for react ! You made my day and OPENED MY EYES for lyrics . I hope you are going to do more Tool reactions because they’re lyrics are powerful with lot of meanings . I can recommend you Parabola , Pneuma , Invincible and more … :))
THE GRUDGE is AMAZING and you will LOVE IT!
I think we have a new TOOL fan! Welcome.
This is amazing. You are amazing
Very good you can bring the connection of Tool expression to those that feel their pain, as most will experience in a lifetime.
Thank you for having the skill and knowledge to connect the writing to our behavior.
Great Band and reaction. You are bringing the education to those who are struggling. It can be hard and people are desperate when down.
Always reach out, someone will care, and help.
Thank you from the depths of my soul for the interpretation of a true masterpiece and soundtrack to my marriage and relationship that somehow has been intense since 1992!
Thanks going through Tool’s music Psychology… hope you keep it up and don’t stop! Remember to have always the Lyrics with you…
