  • We made a hammock stand from steel and treated pine. This hammock stand is sturdy, stable, and easy to make.
We followed Peter Brown's design for this build.
It can be found on his Shop Time video entitled Steel & Redwood Hammock Stand:

    The Process:
We started by getting two pieces of steel from our local welding shop. Both pieces were pre-cut to two feet in length. We cut each one into two four inch pieces and then measure seven inches from each end placing a sixty degree line between the measurements. We then cut all the pieces using a grinder and cutoff wheel. We tried using a reciprocating saw, and although it did work, it was hard to control and keep straight. Once the steel was cut, we cleaned all the pieces, again using the grinder, but this time with a flap sanding disk. We then used an arc welder to weld all the pieces making sure to tack one side first to prevent warping. We then cleaned up the metal and painted the brackets with primer, and then black paint. We drilled four half-inch holes, one for each arm. We then bought four by four treated lumber from our local hardware store. We purchase two eight foot long pieces, and two six foot long pieces. We cut two foot sections (four of them) out of one of the eight foot long pieces. We then stained all the pieces using dark wood stain. We should have used exterior grade stain, but we didn't want to make another trip to the store. We then assembled it all using bolts and washers. Finally, we enjoyed our hammock stand.

Solid! And you solved the “how do I store this?” problem. Thanks for showing the good and the bad when cutting or welding.
