A DIY Hammock Pipe Stand

- Plans for hiking and camping are well and truly scuppered in these weird times in which we currently live.
I decided to build a DIY Pipe Stand for hanging a camping hammock in the garden.
It's made with parts from www.themetalstore.co.uk and based on these plans theultimatehang.com/2012/07/0...
Parts used were 4 x 2m and 2 x 1.5m lengths of 42.4mm galvanised steel pipe and the following Interclamp connectors in the same size: 2 x 104, 2 x 125, 1 x 149 and 2 x 179.
The 2 x 179 parts (the metal rings I put on the uprights) are optional - just useful for making sure the hammock straps don't slide down the upright poles.
Total cost was around £85. It'll be less if you opt for a narrower pipe or a smaller size. I chose a 4m width as my hammock is 3.3.5m (11') in length.

JUNE 2020 update. Although I was 99% sure the stand was fine as I built it, there was a tiny bit of movement along the length of the stand when you settle in to it. I added a cross piece to the base of the uprights. I bought two 176 (3 way) joints to put on the bottom of the uprights and a couple of 1 metre lengths so I could have a short cross shaped formation at the bottom of the pipes. This works great and gives just a bit of an added feeling of security when using the stand.
Here in the States, places like Lowe’s or Hime Depot will cut a 10” pipe into multiple lengths, then thread the ends so the fittings can be screwed together. All for free. We made a staircase railing that way. It looks great and will outlive this 100 year-old-house I love into. Because it is a raining, we concreted the ends into the ground.
I would love to see a video of your new addition to the bottom with the cross piece and i would love to have you review it again and show some video of you in it from the side so we can se the stability and or movement. great video thank you!

Galvanised steel so no rust - just a little bit of very light moss on the base after 3 years (it'll power wash straight off).
OK OK, this is a really good video. Although I have to ask where did you get that watch from. It’s very nice.

I was thinking about going the same way with the pipes and connectors. I'm a little bit worried about the stability. How did it work for you?
Pretty good Lukas. There's a little bit of lateral movement (along the length of the stand) so I'm thinking of augmenting the base of the poles with another cross piece at right angles.
@@simonkemptravel2181 great video and timely fir myself. I was going to ask the same as sbove. I've seen the other style in the ultimate hang book with the bottom pole and wondered if that may be more structurally sound as I'm a larger frame.
@@IamJaymo Thanks for the comment Jon. I've actually been checking it out today and am going to add a stabilising bit to the base tomorrow. I'll update (with pictures if possible) when I've done that and had a test swing :)
@@simonkemptravel2181 im thinking adding 2 x 165 combination sockets or 2 x 158 4 way cross and 2 more 4 meter poles across the bottom should firm it up

Does it have to be 4.5 m high? Could it be cut shorter a bit to fit inside?
Don't see why not :) You won't need to allow for a tarp obviously.
Isn’t it 2m high and 4m long as you built it?
Can this plan work using pvc instead?
I wouldn't think so, the forces generated would be too much for PVC.

What's the weight limit
No idea Kevin, I'm about 90kg/200lb and it's fine. Unless you're exceptionally heavy it should be fine. Pipe thickness will be a factor here but the steel pipe used is very strong of course. If you have the stamina, you can wade through the maths! ua-cam.com/video/vPTWGN3tnlU/v-deo.html&
