Steel & Redwood Hammock Stand

  • I picked up the steel at a local salvage yard and the redwood fence posts at the Home Depot. The majority of the time spent on this project was me screwing up the nerve to start welding.
I'm a fan of MIG love the sound and thoroughly enjoyed melting metal in the shop! I guarantee you will see more of this.
Mrs. Brown was huge in helping me finalize the joining method with the carpenter shims and the leveling feet. She was the voice of reason, to keep me from freaking out at the last mile.
As I know someone will ask. Evolution sent me a saw last year, and Hobart sent me a welder. No one paid me to make this video and I purchased the steel for the welding table, gas for the welder and the cart to set it all on. If either of them does sponsor an episode, I will disclose that in the video.

Mr. Brown, you should dip a fork in clear resin then shape it into the form of a spoon, then you can eat soup with a fork and blow people's minds!

You should make scissors out of some stone like granite, and use some micarta for the handle. Would it be rock, paper, or scissors?

Peter, could you try dipping some rust dust? Dunno what you could make out of it, maybe a door knob or something? But I think it would be interesting!

Yea! I really liked the way that the murder bowl turned out! definatly one of my favourite projects to date. I think that the red colour (yes colour, im from the UK don't judge me 😂😂) from the rust would give a really nice contrast!

Next time just as a suggestion try putting a bevel at the join you will need to use a little more welding wire but you will also end up with a stronger weld a good portion of ending up with a good weld (even with experience) is how you prep the material and joint area

Stick welders usually work a whole lot better for heavier weight material than mig welders, but you still did a great job. Props to my grandpa for teaching me these things, because I'm 11, and these days kids my age don't really learn these types of things, and I'm actually pretty mediocre at mig and stick welding, and I wouldn't have even learned any of this stuff if it weren't for him.

Peter, for your future welding endeavors you should bevel the edges of where your going to be welding whenever possible. This will allow the puddle to flow deeper and promote better penetration than a surface weld. By no means am I a professional welder but beveling has indeed saved my ass in many critical welds!
