2001: A Kerbal Odyssey - MunBus & Discovery One Missions

- For the last few weeks I've been working with ShadowZone on a mission pack to let players recreate the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. It requires the Making History DLC so that the mission builder can provide all the mission scripting. The full pack has 5 missions covering the Flights to Space Station V, Klavius Base, TMA-1 and a 2 part Discovery One mision.

Really weird that the game skipped the orbit requirement. Hmm. Need to look into that.
But it was a lot of fun doing all of this :)
You did a really cool ship btw
Thank you! I'm happy Scott let me in on the fun.
Don't forget to call him "HAL Kerman".
Actually the computer in part 2 of the Diskovery mission pack is called "VAL 9000" ;)
incredible work on the ship, congratz
I’m sorry Scott. i’m afraid I can’t do that.
Score: 2001
Nice
Looking brilliant. Kudos to ShadowZone. That Discovery looks sick.
Thanks :)
Agreed. What he designs with just the stock parts blows my mind.
It's so weird to see Scott Manley following in the footsteps of Manley Kerman from Nassault's "Manley - A KSP Movie" from 4 years ago.
"Like a boss!" More like, "Like a bus!" :)
Damn it, I was just about to make that joke and thought to check. Nice one, Necrobones!
"Open the pod bay doors,KAL"
"I'm sorry Jeb, i can't possibly do that."
The Discovery One is a thing of beauty.
I have an AP exam with a 52% passing rate tomorrow but I'm not missing a new Scott Manley video
That is some epic level mission building. Well done both, incredible.
but the sun didn't rise over the crater edge... Need to time it so that the radio activates when the sun hits the monolith!
The sun never hits this monolith sadly.
12:07 "the damage doesn't look so bad from out here" oh wait wrong movie.
cupofcoffey event horizon?
A Culture GSV would probably fling Minmus out of Kerbin's SOI with it's mass.
Gravitas Shortfall would be a great name for a Culture ship.
That was a close one... TERRAIN! TERRAIN!
Pitching up like at at 3:30 is gonna make everybody spill their coffee and drop their turkey-ish sandwiches.
Yes, I've seen that movie far too many times. Even in 70mm once, which was awesome. You could clearly read the instructions on the zero-G toilet on the Aries-1B. (I live in the HAL-9000's hometown -- we had a big birthday bash for him back in 1997.)
Open the pod bay door, Hal. I can't do that, Dave.....
That german accent was realy good... only that it was russian
JoKa I like your pfp
David Glover thx man, #GoBigOrGoHome
East German, a long way east.
This is great;
Wow, this mission pack looks really well made. Like it should be part of the stock game. I'm almost tempted to buy the expansion now :)
6:20 it should really be 'whose radio is that'. Great missions and video apart from that!
"Total Score: 2001" - _Perfect_!
Anyone ever noticed how all the Vin Diesel 'Riddick' films use Saitek controls in the spacecraft?
Come on the magic mun bus!
When the discovery leaves you could have played the departure music from TMP
I wonder if you could spin the hab section and jog around the perimeter...
Scott Manley: Voice Actor
5:54 "just like your mom"
Save the Expanse!
True beratna right here.
"Popped the fusebox." LOL
cmon why you didn't read the science experiment description
This pack you and ShadowZone made seems really cool, I might go and grab it :)
Out of fun: Isn't every "jump" you do on the moon technically a sub-orbital flight? :D
And because the was artificial gravity on the bus in the movie, 3:28 would make everyone slam into the back of the bus
my god it's full of stars
The thumbnail for this video appears to be the thumbnail intended for part 2
This is part II part one was a couple of weeks ago.
youtube doesnt want me to know that. they should fix their subscription feed. dont know how i missed that
(9:54) I think someone saw the RCS thrusters at work and thought it was a leak. ;) (I think they saw them at about the 9:33 mark.)
The Kerbal animation at 11:13
I like the New Making History Expansion.
Sadly my computer is a Potato :(
50th anniversary ! Hey Scott, are you going to see to 70mm re-release ?
I built my own Space 1999 Eagle and it few HORRIBLY at first. Took a lot of flying to get used to it.
Hey Scott! Will you make another series like the interstellar one in the near future?
Out to Kerbin. Get the passengers. Back to Mun. Out to Kerbin. Get the passengers. Back to Mun. Out to Kerbin. Get the passengers. Back to Mun. Out to Kerbin. Get the passengers. Stop at Monolith-
noice
Any chance of someone building an Alexei Leonov in KSP?
I always liked that ship design in 2010.
Babylon 5 liked it so much that they "borrowed" it.
I guess this needed to use stock parts, rather than the Joolian Discovery mod. :)
In the book, the Discovery had heat radiators. Any "realistic" model of the Discovery would need those, correct?
You need to fly north to get from Clavius crater to Tycho crater
But this is Klavius crater and Tykho crater.
I was stuck with a monolith that I couldn't move.
Successfully Succeeded.
was it a Dr Strangelove imitation? :D
hey scott ive had a thought and maybe you can tell me if im on point. with modern tech that i can buy for home use is there any reason why i shouldnt be able to build my own rocket given enough time and cash?
Each country have their own rules.
But they also usually have their own rocketry clubs.
so yes then if i follow the rules. sick.
2:30 more “like a bus”, eh? ; )
Poor Scott mixed up 2001 with Spaceballs....
How about an act one? I want to see some primitive Kerbals beating the crap out of each other.
Were is the first Part?
I'm early for once!
I'll start some Pink Floyd album and check if it will sync...
Put on some Pink Floyd and send your Kerbals on a trip!
How to I install this?
KHAAAN ZOOM
where’s the giant baby?
Is the Leonov in it?
Should I be ashamed that I've never seen the actual movie and had to piece together what happened in it by watching this?
yes you totally should be ;-)
Wait, someone other than me has read the Culture books?
They're my favorite sci fi.
yes, Elon Musk
where is part 1?
It was a livestream posted a couple of weeks ago.
Total score: 2001
Under 100 club assemble! Hi Sir Manley!
Kerbals are descendants of frogs? OOOHHh LOL
still have a soft spot for star cops
That is Star Trek the motion pt
Pictures l
think that you should refuel.
I don't know why people keep spreading the false rumor that there's a free Anaconda at Hutton Orbital. It's a 100 credit Anaconda, not free.
You didn't shut Hal down. Such inaccuracies. Tsk tsk
Early!!!
I still need to finish reading all those books, the culture, but I keep pondering if we are looking at 'slow genocide.' There is only one factoid that makes me think we might not, the ability for culture members to inter-breed with other 'humanoid' races. This wouldn't be a trait that would be allowed if the intent is to decrease the birth rate to a point just below stable. Such a slow decline it can take tends of hundreds of thousands of years before genetic drift, elimination of accidental birth rates and other factors bring on collapse.
Still... even if we are, I would still want to be part of the bloody culture!
I admire those bloody minds far to much, in all their Nth dimensional glory....
Gave this more and more thought and concluded a negative result.
In addition to interbreeding, they also have the ability to self-impregnate. With these two traits I wonder if they have managed to create a 'floor' as well, making it so the biological component would naturally repopulate to a minimal level if something managed to bring them below that number. As long as a single member of the Culture survive they will have the means to repopulate.
Justin Y. will not comment on my comment...
That's because you're not concentrating hard enough.
"just like your mom" :D
Your Kerman accent sounds more like Russian.
Also, please give yourself a german accent, because in reality von braun is german..
I didn't like 2001: A Space Odyssey, I respect it and it's culture status but I don't like it.. There I said it..
And you are not alone.
I'm in an equally awkward position of really liking the book but thinking the film was a bit naff (HAL excepted).
"Mostly not buggy".... like the rioters are "mostly peaceful"...
