Launch, Rendezvous & Docking From Cockpit Challenge
Вставка

- From a live stream - attempting to launch, rendezvous and dock with a target without leaving the cockpit view or using the map. I do have some advantages in the form of onboard instrumentation and displays which provide more information than the stock displays.

It's not boring Scott, We're watching the instruments with you buddy :D
I scrolled down the comments looking for this one. Just so I could agree.
That screen that reads NO SIGNAL is the docking port camera - very handy. You have to select your craft's docking port as the active part from the target menu. There's also a docking port alignment indicator available. Kind of bummed you didn't get to them since they are obviously very useful (and fun) for IVA docking.
soopahsoopah so that camera will actually work? What is the name of this mod? I don't have kerbal installed but I may have to get it again to try this!
Base mod is Rasterprop Monitor, but it works nicely with the Aset props / iva mods
What he said, Rasterprop Monitor. And yeah it works you just have to choose 'control from here' when selecting the docking port. Very useful
There's also an external camera part that you can stick to your pod if you're fed up with the tiny windows. It comes with the RPM mod.
Too bad there isn’t a way to “replay” the flight with a different camera position. It’d be neat to see what blew up.
OtherTheDave it was probaly the boosters
Surely the mission end screen would show what happened?
Scnottaken Yeah, that’s not as cinematic though :-)
Yay! I've done this in the Alcor capsule before - which has all he buttons and MFDs you could want - Its an incredible feeling when you've managed it without turning the UI back on even once,
I have always found the ALCOR to be too crowded with buttons and controls to be useful -- the designers took a lot of effort to put every single possible control in there that you may want to use, but they lost track of the human-machine (or Kerbal-machine) interface part of the design in the process.
If that were a real pod, the buttons wouldn't be sensibly arranged and the displays would be too small to read.
Surprisingly, that was one of the most riveting missions I've watched. It adds a whole other level not being able to see from outside or look at the map screen. Makes you appreciate the hard reality of spaceflight. The tension was palpable! Shame you missed the moment of docking.
Absolutely fascinating! I would have never guessed this was even feasibly possible save a metric ton of mods. Nice job!
UA-cam has been supressing your vids so much for me, i havent seen you in suggested since last year, forgot how awesome your vids are. Found you in subcriptions tab if curious. still works for me, chronological order and all
"This stream is gonna be so boring; it's just me looking at instruments the whole time!" (Or something roughly like that)
No, I found it really interesting and impressive to watch! This actually scratched an itch that's been around for a while - being able to watch someone navigate in space from a realistic cockpit with all the buttons and switches. It didn't actually click for me that one could even do this in KSP! Thanks for putting up this clip from the stream!
"Just like a pro." YOU ARE THE PRO!
Scott, that might have been your best mission ever.
if you still have vr you should try the kerbalvr mod
oh yes, please :D
I'm gonna try this, this was awesome 👍🏻
Replaying game , your vids saved me the learning curve , and I can barely dock with all the views.. nice job
Talking about how someone used a paper clip to save an airplane, as he docks and doesn’t even realize he docked. What a guy.
that was awesome and even a little exciting
As a veteran of the orbiter series of simulators, this was the only way to fly. KSP made the visualisation of orbits and intersections a thing of dreams.
Mr Manley, A Legend
that may have seem boring to some, but that was really cool for me. i also liked learning a few new terms for space things and seeing how the astronauts back in the day got to the moon
I would like this twice. Cuz I was really excited too!
I don' t know how I failed to notice the Sandia Thunderchicken shirt until most of the way through this video.... Very cool Scott!!!
Well done! From an instrument pilot in training to a Kerbal Instrument Space Pilot in training.
Very impressive!
13:00 "Just like a pro" you are THE KSP pro Scott!
WOW. That was awesome
you sir, are a god!
Somebody show this to Buzz Aldrin, he would be so proud
"Docking just like a pro" - telling spaceflight tales and totally missing that you actually docked :)
Thank you for doing my challenge
Been watching your videos for years, just now realized I was not subscribed.
Fixed that.
I Love the A.S.E.T!!!
I haven't played KSP in about 2 years. Now I want to go back to it.
You. Are. A. Beast.
Now you finally know how hard it is to be a real astronaut.
Love RPM a must have mod I award use it, though it can be a little temperamental
OPT spaceplane cockpits are great for that, all usefull informations are displayed.
A KSP challenge to make anyone lose their sanity: Going to the Mun and back without time warp
How does the effective orbits change when two spacecrafts with different orbits rendezvou in space?
Yes they do. They are highly sensitive to initial conditions.
I'm no physicist but i imagine the orbit would change to a orbit which is an average between the two crafts original orbits while also accounting for differences in mass and velocity
so the orbit would be closer to the the orbit of the craft with the higher momentum (Momentum=Mass*Velocity) but it would still be changed relative to the difference between the two
rocky2694 I guess that makes sense
Scott that is fucking impressive. Good job.
Great, after this try apollo 11 mission with internal view. Also u can install external cameras and this "no signal" will be camera view
ALCOR has been one of my favorite vehicles for a long time. Gorgeous IVA! I'm glad that the developer is back to making enhancements on it again! It was a dead project for way too long.
would that not be a comatosed project :-)
@ScottManley how did you solve the issue of RasterPropManager showing the MFD displays backwards? It’s a huge unsolved issue.
Yep, deffo boring, but respect to ya for your high level of nerdiness. I tip my hat to you, Sir ;)
not boring but impressive and immersive :)
You should play some DCS World aircrafts! I would love to hear your opinion of the aircrafts as you are flying them.
Hey Scott, if you select your docking port as your reference part you can get a docking camera on your screen that says No Signal
You sir...are a god😂
"Kerbalvr isn't suitable for drinking wine"
Stay classy Scott Manley...
And more RO!
Would be cool to see a whole series of you playing the game from cockpit, preferably in VR. To make it more watchable for casuals you might need to add map and external overlay for viewers.
Scott Manley only does efficent launch trajectories. Thats what he told me.
Now I wanna see life of Boris try XD
In VR!
Orbiter Players: my goals are beyond your understanding
"for those people that still speaks in metric"...Did you mean the whole planet? (except US and Myanmar, etc.)?
mrjay42 That's the joke.
And he made my day ^_^ Too bad I was drinking coffee. Had to clean the mess he caused...
Don't worry, you'll be conquered soon enough ;P
Myanmar? Hm, I wouldn't have thought of that country as one that has their shit together.
Exactly.
For me map mode was not cheating
great video scott
I would love to see you do a
I have long wanted to see you do this type of challange. I tried landing on the mun, IVA only. but since I dont have an audience I cheated xD
Isn't there a camera option for RasterPropMonitor? Where you place a small camera pod on the outside of the craft that you can align in a direction you want - such as forward prograde for docking. And you can use the data screens inside the cockpit and select one to use the camera feed.
Hullcam VDS Continued - it also adds cameras directly to all docking ports, so you don't actually need any external camera for docking - you select your docking port as a reference part and you will have nice video feed right where it says "no signal".
RasterPropMonitor in fact comes with its own camera part! You just need to remember to stick them on your craft ;-)
I could tell you were rather pleased with the success, not even a Fly Safe...docking complete, challenge complete, mic drop
If you install Docking port alignment indicator it also gets available as a Rasterprop monitor widget
I did a mun landing like this before, Launch, Landing, Return all in IVA using Raster Prop Mod.
Scott, can you explain why does the fat earth theory says that the precession increases towards more equatorial orbits?
Shouldn't there be some "maximum precession" inclination and drop down towards both equatorial and polar orbits?
NoName yes the FAT earth Theroy
The precession is measured by the change in the longitude of the ascending node which is proportional to cos(i) however the angular distance between orbital planes is proportional to cos(i)*sin(i)
Hello there! Would ksp run smoothly on a workstation pc? The ones with 10+ cores? Or is it some other limitations for the physics of 200+ parts?
Hello Scott,
which Mod do you use for the flight instruments?
Wow!
you have a great mod that add avionics from aset to stock command pods/cockpits, try it, it's KSA IVA upgrade :)
Nice, Damn Nice
I still can't rendezvous with the map screen...
The pod is using at the very beginning of the video its called ALCOR pod made by Alexustas 22 too
Looks like me flight simming, I fly IFR so it's all instruments and checking waypoint interception
Except for takeoff and landing
So are you going to get back to Kerban in cockput mode now?
Scott, why did you call it Saratoga?
I did a reentry by instrumentation once.
I kept itching to switch to map view, but it was fun.... just, trust the instruments, I mean, they're all Jeb's Junkyard, what could possibly go wrong?
You should try to acheive this using Orbiter 2016 to dock to the ISS. It´s closer to the real thing and it takes a lot more time because approach must be very slow while controlling your ship horizontal displacement, rotation and distance to the ISS all of this simultaneously and using your docking MFD. There is also a "side up" of the ISS docking port that must be aligned with the corresponding one of your spacecraft´s docking port. All previous steps as aligning orbits and waiting in a lower or higher orbit in order to catch up with the ISS must also be done. And for a higher challenge try to do this with Atlantis Spache Shuttle (The docking port is over your head, not in front of you, but you can use a camera view from your docking port along with your docking MFD if you wish, but the docking MFD is good enough to achieve a successful docking).
This way is very close as NASA astronauts dock in real life. WARNING! The learning curve of Orbiter 2016 is steeper that the one of Kerbal Space Program, at least in order to do this task.
The way you did it in Kerbal Space Program is more or less like doing it as in an Star Wars or other SciFi movie compared the way it is done in Orbiter 2016....Well, no so quick and easy as in the movies provided that some of the required steps were done in your simulation, but in a lot more simplified way.
Orbiter website:
orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk
Google for orbiter docking iss for instructions on how to dock to the ISS. Enjoy! :-)
Have you seen my orbiter video where I take a stab at the space shuttle RTLS in orbiter without anything more than a magazine article as a reference?
ua-cam.com/video/Iwn3kk-q1YU/v-deo.html
I haven´t seen it before my reply post. I´ve just watched it. You managed to return alive (Even you didn´t use the braking parachutes the shuttle uses in normal landings). Of course, you have plenty of flying hours in space simulators and this pays off. :-)
Is JSI availible for the nee KSP?
It seems that you are using raster prop monitor. And you are using the Mk.1 command pod. I just installed RPM and iva for command pod is missing. However, the cockpit for airplanes and cupola has iva. Do I have to install another mod to use iva for command pod?
I miss Galileo Conquest...
wow! very nice.. 8)
Nice Sandia National Lab Shirt
Why would someone dislike this? Absurd.
You should definitely do kerbal vr.
I'll watch video in a moment. Expedition 56-57 launch happening!
My career save has failed to load properly for the past couple months; I miss this game.
Scott, you said in your video that as you are 7 km below your target you are roughly gaining 49 km every orbit. I cannot figure out what your reasoning is and would like to because it seems like a quick calculation. The approximation I get using trigonometry and granted that the two orbit are relatively similar would be 65 km per orbit in this case. Cheers !
Scott u could be a astronaut
What mod allows for in cabin controls?
Raster Prop Monitor
The pod is ALCOR
Like a pro
What mod did you use for the cockpit?
What mod is this
Can you do one about the new ELUA ?
I thought you did this once in vr, I guess I'm thinking of someone else
This needs VR
The trailer for First Man played before this video which makes me think your next IVA mission should be to the Mun... Then after that how about to the Moon in RSS/RO. Also makes me think a 1st person EVA view is needed.
Scott can you tell me what is this mod please?
I don't even want to think about using VR and alcohol at the same time. I let a drunk friend use my Rift and he punched my TV because he thought it was a T-Rex.
Not Boring !!!!!! What Mod??
The instrument panels, I'm 99% sure, are from Raster Prop Monitor. That mod is almost as old as KSP itself.
Doesn't it come with B9?
yes
And now with the stock cockpit :)
We need a new difficulty level in video games just next to the very hard. We'll call it "Difficulty level: Scott Manley"
Now to beat the docking record to the ISS in Orbiter!
Standing record is 9:50 seconds?
What mod are those screens from?
RasterPropMonitor
Does anyone know what mod this is from? I would like to try this myself.
RasterPropMonitor
Try ir with the Alcor lander capsule + RPM - adds lots of capsule controls for lights, staging, SAS setting, etc you can turn the game ui off entirely..
Thank you both. I will check them out.
Why is this not part of the main game?
can anyone tell me how that junk system display is activated? is there a mod ?
Which mod is this ?????
