That bug happened to me when I was returning samples from a Class E asteroid. I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the capsule careening towards a mountain.
Those flashes in the clouds are lightning. Just remove the EVE lightning cfg file. It looks terrible imo. Edit: You can tell it's lightning because it isn't Z fighting and it only happens in certain places, and not everywhere across the thick clouds.
Could we perhaps get a rundown of what graphics mods / tweaks you use, and actually work on KSP 1.3? Those rising through the atmosphere views look wonderful!
Interestingly, Bell's transonic research plane was also originally called the XS-1. It was redesignated as X-1 shorty after it was introduced, however.
I'm planning on going into rocket science in college at Purdue, but don't really know what exact field. I'm kinda interested in flight control but don't really know yet. Kerbal Space Program didn't start the love of rockets, but didn't hurt it
Scott your name is in KSP! If you go into the tracking facility just after starting a new career game you might see an icon labeled "Manley's hindsight"
Squad are not exactly game developers. That might have both helped and hindered, but I am optimistic. Also we will always have the current version, which is already almost perfect.
If you get into a flat-spin try pitching down and yawing in the opposite direction of the spin. I think it's taught in flight training (haven't attended it).
Speaking of launch vehicles, any plans to mimic the Stratolaunch twin fuselage delivery system that rolled off the factory today? I recall a previous build you did of a similar composite aircraft.
It doesn't need to use main engines to return. It can glide back, after a boostback burn. Thus, it will have enormous cross range capability, and so will be able to land back pretty much anywhere in the eastern continental US, regardless of where it was launched from.. depending on the launch profile in the first place (aka if it has a lighter load, it can boostback farther, since it will have more fuel leftover when the payload detaches). Or it could continue onwards. They may have plans to land them on carriers, for "heaviest" payloads. That's what I would do anyway! It would have been more expensive to develop for a new entrant (such as SpaceX) because of the design and development cost of doing Aero versus Rockets. However Boeing obviously has a lot of experience with this sort of thing, so that may cut their dev time by a big margin. Add to that their capability to manufacture large aircraft, and it will probably be a viable competitor. Well.. assuming they don't fall for the bloat common on government contracts. Which is exactly what we want :-) Also, As a refueling tug, to put fuel into orbit for a Mars transfer stage, it would be really good, at 5 million per trip.. that's only about $3700 US dollars per kilo of fuel+vehicle (so more likely about $5000 per kilo of just fuel) into LEO. I have to say... my money is on this design for LEO, until rocket design gets so good that the extra fuel doesn't matter, expensive materials are used less, and ground crew is minimal, so price drops into the basement. Then rockets will be cheaper. EDIT: It occurs to me... you could... put this thing into orbit using 100% solid (or hybrid) propellant, with a kickback stage that is comprised of multiple small engines to boostback. All you would need at that point is verniers and a small liquid fuel supply.. it could even be hypergolic. Hmm.... now that might be terribly cheap. Especially with advances to solids being made recently. AlICE might be able to do this for you, as would any number of hybrid technologies. I wish Blue Origin would get its "stuff" together on this.
Well, what if you put the wings on top of the spacecraft, but reenter inverted (wings down), then flip for stability once you're not in danger of burning up?
I'm pretty sure that those large tail fins are quite unstable in flight, idk why. When i was trying to use those as main wings for my stuntplane, the controls were a bit of a mess, so i guess those fins are the problem.
Scott question semi-related to the video. The music you used from ccmixter is that a resource available to Tubers in general as long as the attribute properly, ala Kevin MacCloud? Or do you have to be a contributer? I looked but in my toothache-addled mind I may have missed the information.
so wait... if escape velocity is required for thrust, then a REALLY big railgun accelerating stuff (lets say cake?) to 15km/s makes the planet move depending on the mass of the cake? and then is it mass or speed that makes more difference to the amount of thrust?
These graphics packs keep getting more and more beautiful but also harder and harder to run smoothly... (I'm looking at you scatterer, 100+ fps stock to 15-20fps modded in some cases) I hope my new 1080 when it arrives will make that a thing of the past
RSS (realistic solar system), add RSS-Textures (in 2K, 4K or 8K resolution), the distances will be too extreme, so either add real engines + cryogenic/real-fuel, or get a scaled down solar system mod (small solar system) to have a KSP game (scales 1:10) but with real planets/textures.
we were playing with bearings before it was cool. I'm just glad I managed to convince you're niece to repurpose the fidget spinner for a bit of engineering fun.
"Is the booster supposed to be tumbling like that? I thought it was supposed to land." "It is. It should stabilize in the last ten kilometers or so." "...And what if it doesn't?" "Well, you're the new guy, so you're on cleanup duty."
Oh a question that I've been meaning to ask, I'm sure this will make me sound like a noob but you use a mod to pump fuel between tanks right? If so what mod and if not then tell me how please also, Fly Safe!
Scott so good at getting to space and the Mun with the bare minimum, his budget can solely be funded by Girl Scout cookie sales.
He could win a 20 million award from google if that was true.
I'm absolutely amazed by the detaching terrain. that is some abstract sci-fi shit
The tiles even cast accurate shadows!
I agree. this bug needs to become a feature
trying to land on minmus when the entire moon is flying past you in square pieces is not fun.
Hahaha glad I am not the only one getting that weird glitch.
That bug happened to me when I was returning samples from a Class E asteroid. I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the capsule careening towards a mountain.

Best Kerbal Rocketeer out there
_Terrain_ _Terrain_ _Pull up_ _Pull up_
If you click the show activation toggles button on the engine, you can enable or disable yaw pitch and roll per engine, even works in flight!
Danny has entered kerbin's atmosphere. i repeat he has entered kerbin's atmosphere
@11:33 Scott: "We're going to rotate", XS-1: "around ALL THE AXES!" again at 13:00
16:02 "Even after that bad return, that flat spin" and that random acid trip lol
i love how scott actually gives a legit answer to the joke question of why not just push the earth away from the rockets
You gave me flashbacks to my dads Yes album collection there for a minute. That terrain looked pretty cool.
Amazing video! Could you share the list of mods used? Looks gorgeous!
You missed the best part, "this isn't working I'm just gonna...." *stream ends*
Beautiful the updated versione of Astronomer's Visual Pack. Those glitches are actually supposed to be lighting, they're intended in this way.
Great job again
I'm planning on going into rocket science in college at Purdue, but don't really know what exact field. I'm kinda interested in flight control but don't really know yet. Kerbal Space Program didn't start the love of rockets, but didn't hurt it
You are the only one who can make me watch games which I cannot play myself.
pretty good bro. impressed you managed to recover during the maiden voyage.
"Somebody great did the thing" best quote ever mr.manly thank you
One of the coolest series in KSP was the space plane series you did so long ago. =)
Great video @Scott Manley you should make a small orbital Space plane on top of your XS-1 booster!
if I'm ever on a plane and the pilots become suddenly incapacitated, I hope that Scott will be there to save us all.
That terrain bug brought me right back to scenery mods in FS98 😁
"Its not necessary or viable to go to antarctica but people do it because... its cool." Didn't even sound intentional, but props for that one!
it actually looks like lightening, looks effin awesome!
Great Scott! Now I know how to make my Shuttle autopilot-friendly. Disabling the roll on the Engines :)
Another Feature we need (or at least what would be really bloody awesome) - Gimballed RCS ports.
Scott your name is in KSP! If you go into the tracking facility just after starting a new career game you might see an icon labeled "Manley's hindsight"
i like how the antenna blocks the solar panel
also u can right click on an engine and click actuation toggle to disable roll
Scott, how do You feel about Take Two buying KSP?
Luca B they are part of Rockstar
Squad said they are still working on it, just with the help of Take Two. I hope that means good
sebaxxcraft123 i say it will give squad and ksp the economic structure it needs
sebaxxcraft123 NO they own rockstar
Squad are not exactly game developers. That might have both helped and hindered, but I am optimistic. Also we will always have the current version, which is already almost perfect.
If you get into a flat-spin try pitching down and yawing in the opposite direction of the spin. I think it's taught in flight training (haven't attended it).
Are you thinking of making a Parker Solar Probe KSP Video? :D
Speaking of launch vehicles, any plans to mimic the Stratolaunch twin fuselage delivery system that rolled off the factory today? I recall a previous build you did of a similar composite aircraft.
How is this better than a rocket that returns the same way?
If you're the contractor building it you get those defense dollars instead of SpaceX?
it has higher range. The wing add range.
Haha - love it.
It doesn't need to use main engines to return. It can glide back, after a boostback burn. Wow! Never seen R.U.D. on terrain in ksp before! That was cool!
Hey ,Scott, where is Galileo conquest?
Pretty sure you can turn off roll control on the engine by using the actuation toggle part of the menu
Cool. I've been building rockets like that for ages now. 'nice to be ahead of the curve.
Some say... Scott Manley got a "Check Staging" tattoo on his left wrist that day...
i just now realized that most of the experienced players in ksp even me say apoaps instead of apoapsis
I believe there is already a way to toggle Yaw/Roll/Pitch for gimbal. Maybe this can only be set in the VAB / Hangar. To be confirmed…
that terrain bug is cool as hell
I think that is actually lightning. I've had a visual pack with it.
Which graphics mods are those? looks great!
Scott question semi-related to the video. The music you used from ccmixter is that a resource available to Tubers in general as long as the attribute properly, ala Kevin MacCloud? Or do you have to be a contributer? I looked but in my toothache-addled mind I may have missed the information.

5:22 - Nope, we've just got all the hindsight.
You can control the Actuation Toggles, Scott
great job capitan!
Scott it actually IS lightning, not graphics glitches, read the description of the graphics pack, I have the same one
which pack is that.
Your videos are awesome, keep it up.
These graphics packs keep getting more and more beautiful but also harder and harder to run smoothly... (I'm looking at you scatterer, 100+ fps stock to 15-20fps modded in some cases)
I hope my new 1080 when it arrives will make that a thing of the past
Man, I want to be a rocket scientist!
omg whars the musi called at 2:00 ?
I'm gonna need to know what those graphics mods are
holy shit thats pretty
It's not a bug. It's a feature :D Old but Gold >
Anyone know what graphics mods Scott has? It looks really good!
What's the realistic solar system mod?
realism overhaul isnt it?
well sorry then, no clue
RSS (realistic solar system), add RSS-Textures (in 2K, 4K or 8K resolution), the distances will be too extreme, so either add real engines + cryogenic/real-fuel, or get a scaled down solar system mod (small solar system) to have a KSP game (scales 1:10) but with real planets/textures.
New idea for a Scott Manley t-shirt: "That wasn't so bad!" :)
What graphics mods is he using?
Astronomer's Visual Pack.
*Bug report:* When you click the launch button, a big red/yellow dialog box needs to pop up asking you to confirm, "Did you check yo' staging?"
That "graphics bug"
WAS Lightning
What are the graphics mods you are using Scott? Other than scatterer.. EVE?
David Tennant and Peter Capaldi frown upon your shenanigans
Visual mods? Also how did you got KSPRC working with 1.3? (ground textures)
What graphical mods do you use? Looks great!
Scott, checkout actuation toggles while in the Vehicle Assembly Building.
So this launch vehicle performs a space shuttle RTLS abort every mission?
Can you please put a link to the graphics packs you use in the description?
the lightning is on purpose I think. I just asked my friend that makes visual packs.
Which one are you using?
Anyone knows what Graphics Mod he uses? The Moon/Mun looks beautiful
kerbin looks beautiful, what graphic mods do u use?
we were playing with bearings before it was cool. I'm just glad I managed to convince you're niece to repurpose the fidget spinner for a bit of engineering fun.
Fraser Jean I would like to make a gyroscope out of fidget spinners. I don't know how to change the plastic parts to work.
"Is the booster supposed to be tumbling like that? I thought it was supposed to land."
"It is. It should stabilize in the last ten kilometers or so."
"...And what if it doesn't?"
"Well, you're the new guy, so you're on cleanup duty."
All the talk about F-14s in the chat and he goes into a couple flat spins. It was an interesting stream.
its lightning of course, its meant to be like that
Sylvester McCoy was actually last seen in the new Netflix series Sense 8
The detaching terrain is a bug in scatterer. Will have to wait for an update or enjoy the freakiness.
cool and informative as always :)
You can get autobrakes if you click the brake button _before_ landing, y'know.
Calling it "Excess" might have been a little too on-the-nose, doncha think?
Isn't XS-1 supposed to be HTOL? I thought it took off like plane
Is there a real solar system or an upscaled Kerbin mod that works with the current Steam version?
Thr terrsin bug exists probably because of the stitching of the terrain snd the flattening of the runway.
can someone tell me this graphics pack i have been looking for something like this for years.
Hi! Could you please do a video on how to install that graphics pack I've been trying it it but it keeps crashing my game! Thanks a lot
Or if someone could link me to A video
Kerbin: "I don't feel so good..."
Gear down! GEAR DOWN NOW!!! The terrain is coming up fast!!!
Oh a question that I've been meaning to ask, I'm sure this will make me sound like a noob but you use a mod to pump fuel between tanks right? If so what mod and if not then tell me how please also, Fly Safe!
who got the (possible) earthworm jim referance?
i didnt, but any mention of it is worthy of a +1
What graphics pack are you using?
Which graphics pack mod is this. Do you need a good GPU to run it?
KSP now partnered with Take Two Interactive... do you consider it a good or bad thing?
I hope it's good, but lack information on how the deal is structured to make any assessment.
The owners of Rock star, of Grand Theft Auto fame.
Luca B The publisher who owns rockstar and 2k. Who have made games such as GTA V, Read Dead Redemption, and Borderlands, respectively.
detaching terrain made me think of Langoliers
