      what i want to say with it is that german as the original language makes sense, more than beeing just another language that uses it

    Giving up the ghost comes from german. I never thought this expression could be translated word by word. Better would be giving up the spirit (ghost and spirit is the same word in german)

      It's been in English since Old English, so probably a parallel development instead of a borrowing from German en.wiktionary.org/wiki/give_up_the_ghost

    neat! nice to know you use programming in KSP too! i made a rocket that uses a preset program that goes to my moho base, lands on my pre-built pad, drops its payload on the crawler next to the pad, and then returns to kerbin, re-enters, and lands at the KSC. i have used it to establish a completely self sustainable, research capable, and giant, in a crater with an ore concentration of 12.7%

    I kinda wish that Kerbal Space Program came with in game AI parts, where you could tell me easily with numbers / sliders to do stuff like this. Like make a rover go from point A to point B on the moon. Make platforms / Rings fly like in the video. AI parts like this would suit the game imo.

    • @gajbooks
      @gajbooks 6 років тому +8

      Mech Jeb has most of that, but I don't like Mech Jeb much because it's too twitchy and behaves very strangely at times. A problem with stock AI is that the vanilla physics range doesn't really let other objects fly at a great distance from the selected vessel. Some mods get around this, but it's impossible for them to load terrain under distant vessels so anything too far away couldn't land or drive without falling through the world. Floating point errors also become a problem, but those aren't nearly as bad as the lack of solid ground. I would love a pitch-independent SAS though, for rovers and such.

    There should be a really easily destroyed monoprop tank or whatever in the middle and if you destroy it, the total monopropellant will drop to zero, then the while loop can test if monoprop is zero, and if it is, shut down the engine, so once you fly through the hoop, it falls out of the sky.

      It's actually from several places in Bible, so this phrase is (was) universal among most languages Bible was translated to. In Germany we have this expression "den Geist aufgeben" oder "Something hat den Geust aufgegeben". Which litterally translates it into "givin up the ghost". more correct would be "loosing the spirit" i gues. the meaning if this saying is, something gave up. lost structural integrity or just failed working, like a machine motor or sumthin.

      No, it is not. "is a literal translation of" implies that it was taken from the source language and then translated. But coincidence does not imply causality. So if you didn't mean to express that, then you shouldn't have worded it like that.

    12:45 To "give up the ghost" is Biblical, from the crucifixion in the King James version (Luke 23:46 - And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.) - more recent translations usually say something like "breathed his last" (breathing -> inspire/expire -> spirit -> ghost), which while more understandable is rather less likely to become a phrase for the ages.

    Google says "giving up the ghost" is a phrase capable of being traced back as far as the 1600s printing of the King James Bible. And if I had to guess its a bit older than that. Maybe 15-1400s somewhere in what would eventually be part of the holy Roman empire or possibly middle ages northern Europe. Thats the best I can deduce.
